I totally bought these a while ago for the tin, since watercolor tins are surprisingly expensive, and ended up liking the watercolors, too. (I'm a Daniel Smith girl, but occasionally cheat on him with other brands. :D)
Quick note about the shifting: If you bend in the metal bits before you put the pans in, you can get a much tighter seal. Just put the front edge in first (against the side with the fixed metal edge instead of the bendable one), then click it down on the other side (bendable side), the rolled bendable metal tab will stay tight against the pan. If you try to put the pan in and then bend the tab, you can't get enough space to bend it well enough, and things shift all over the place. Hope that helps some!
I would love to see the finished page of those florals from the coloring book when it's done!
+ordinaryowls yes, please! It must look really lovely.
yes?
+Aadhira Arun Yes!
I just love the way you use water colors and no matter what brand you use it turns out amaaaaazing
Those watercolors look so vibrant! And fun to use:) I just want to add that those roses you were painting look 3D and they look like they will just pop out of the paper. Just lovely!!
Absolutely stunning lettering! Gorgeous!
Hi Kristina, you could use watercolor pencils in the small areas and letters, that might look cool.
Thanks for the review on these. Based on the price they must have a high dye content. They look perfectly suited for their coloring books and, more to my genre, maybe even some plein air watercolor journaling where lightfastness is less an issue.
I love your videos !😊☺
Me too!
Dye? Like chemical synthetic color? I don’t think they have anything but pigment and binder in them. The reason they’re so cheap is it’s what’s known as a “extruded cake” pan. They squeeze the color out in a long log and cut it to size for the pans. It makes manufacturing a lot simpler and they pass the savings on to us consumers.
Whenever you get a pan that has lots of bubbles in it, it’s almost always extruded. Almost all “budget” half pans are made in this manner
I LOVE your handwriting! It is awesome... sure wish mine was that good !! Thanks for the tips!
+Nyoka Smith Same here. Her painting handwriting is gorgeous and better than most people's regular writing.
Absolutely gorgeous watercolor flowers
I love these for things that won’t be hanging on a wall. I bought every single set.
Definitely going to check out the Decadent Pies set for architecture paintings, the colors look perfect.
Thank you for reviewing these Kristina. I just finished created the first swatches for Kuratake Gansai Watercolors 36. This set reminded me of it when you got the metallic colors. I love how your flowers are turning out - sumptuous!!!!
Your colouring on the flowers is amazing.
Kristine would you mind making a video about you water coloring in that water coloring book? it would be very fun to see how you choose to color the designs. please consider
Great review. I like that you tell us the pros and cons in your opinion. I like the pan size and the flat water brushes. May have to try those. TFS
Kristina, you may know this by now because I’m a little late to the party! I just ordered the Prima confections and surprise the tin is labeled and the little pans are numbered!!! Of course I measured and made my swatches (ready for paint) and included in the tin is a swatch, numbered and name of color ready for paint! I love your videos!
I kept thinking I wish I was taking a watercolor class from you. I enjoyed this video a lot. Thank you for the review.
I recently got one of these Prima Marketing watercolor coloring books (Volume 4) along with another gorgeous watercolor coloring book, Flowers and Butterflies by Victoria Chukalina, and I was so saddened when none of my watercolor brush pens/markers worked direct to page (Colorit and Tombow's for example). So I'd have to color the markers on a non porous surface on the side, then pick up the color with my brush and color that way (which I personally despise having to do). I finally do have an actual watercolor palette (Meiling 48 set) that I have yet to try in the books. I'm not used to using a watercolor palettes as opposed to the watercolor pens/markers, and have been struggling greatly, even after watching soooo many tutorials! But I'm happy to hear what you said about the Prima watercolor paper and how fast watercolor dries on it! I thought I was going crazy!
Thank you so much for this video. I learned so much, and not just about Prima products. I just bought a different company's watercolors (they haven't arrived yet), and have no idea how to watercolor. So this gave me some tips. I LOVE how you colored the flowers. Mine will never, ever look that good, but I will try, and will try to be happy with the results. I'm going to see if you have other watercolor videos so I can learn more. Thanks again.
A quick tip (idk if anyone have commented about this before)
If you don't want to glue the pans down, but don't want the pans to shift a lot as well, you could put a little bit of kneaded eraser underneath them so they wont shift a lot and you could pull the pans out when you want :)
Hello Miss Kris(tina),
I just wanted to say I'm a big fan of your art especially your watercolours as that is my area of specialty and when I saw this newest video I was immediately *YES YES PLEASE*
I've been looking for some new watercolours and unfortunately I'm been getting a little discouraged, however as soon as I saw you unwrap the Prima "The Classics" watercolours and made a swatch for them I saw the EXACT colours I was looking for it was a godsend.
I just ordered mine a few hours ago off the Amazon link and I just can't wait for them to get here to try them out!
Thank you for the review and have a good Weekend!
Great review Kristina! Btw, I could watch you water color all day!
Lots of talent going on right here. Ty for sharing.
thoroughly enjoyed watcing you paint those flowers lol
Love watching you paint and write you are so3 talented
I just got this book yesterday & can't wait to try it out! I really like the prints - in fact enough that I want to plan what I'm going to do so I don't mess up.
Flower, upon listening to you opening and putting in to the tin all your paints, to stop them moving around temporarily you could use glue dots which would allow you to keep them still but also allow you to remove them when wanting to change them., hope this helps. x
I am so very envious of your beautiful lettering. Beautiful!
I bought all three sets , I'm just that way 😊.
Beautiful work. I've been considering trying out water coloring and your video really inspired me. I have been using different types of media in my coloring books - gel pens, Prisma pencils and markers, and enjoy doing that very much but now I'm at the point where I want to be creative and try out the water coloring. I am going to try out the tropical colors in this set. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to create and share your video. I will let you know the outcome of my experience. I have a lot of down time because I am home bound for the most part as I have multiple sclerosis and that it's very important for me to use my motor and cognitive skills. Thank you for the inspiration!!
Another great review Kristina, very thorough. I'm fairly new to watercouring but watch your videos for inspiration. I would love to see that painting finished! As always, beautiful work!
Your lettering is so beautiful, I'm amazed everytime I see you do it. Love your art!
I've invested in several watercolor pallets (Way To Many 🤗) and the travel tin case alone could sell for three times as much. I purchased all three for the travel tin alone! Even if the pigment is not what I desire , I can reuse the the empty pans and refill with my Windsor and Newton artist grade paints. Also really want to try out there watercolor coloring book too !
It's almost 1am here in Singapore and I was about to head for my sleep but when I saw this, I knew I couldn't miss this. Great video as always :) Loving these first impressions on products.
So soothing watching you letter and colour 😍
Great review...I want to try out the watercolors because they are compact and so cute!
There are a few videos out there showing how to close the tabs to stop them from moving, and still be able to take them out. Great tips. TFS
Knowing (and observing) how creamy these are sealed the deal for me! I also love the color themes these sets show. This was among the recommendations in my Amazon queue, but I didn't really buy them just yet, waiting for a good review. I always have my sketchbook with me, and carry a couple of watercolor pans and waterbrushes just for this!
If only buying nice paints will make me an artist like you. I love this style of writing.
I love these sets because I tend to love opaque and vibrant colors. I have two sets of these and some Winsor ones too.
Such a great and honest review - it's nice to hear the negatives called out in a positive kind way. I think this gives us a really great idea of what we would be getting if we bought this rather that someone blindly recommending something because it was sent for review or is available via an affiliate link. Appreciate the honesty and I think I'll be adding the paints and book to my wish list 😀
I've been looking for a small tin watercolor palette to pour in my own paints and this seems perfect! Most of the empty ones I've found are $20, so buying one that already has some paints is great. I can give the pans away if I don't like them.
Please show us the finished page with the florals. Would love to see how it turns out. Thanks.
Very cool...I missed a ton of your videos (I was away on vacation) and had NO idea that Prima even had this type of product...very cool..thanks for your honest review, I value you for sharing all this wonderful info! Hugs to you and the kitties...they are soooo sweet!!
You can bend down the big metal part in the watercolor palette, and then pop your pans in to keep them in place. Just bend the long part towards the middle and then put your pans in and push them until the pop into place. That will stop them from sliding around.
I LOVE my watercolors! I bought these when I first started and it is my favorite art supplies. Great investment!
Your writing is so gorgeous, wish I could write even half as beautiful as you. Great review :)
I got this book before I knew about 100% cotton paper so understand about the paper as it’s cellulose & drys so fast. As not great at drawing you can trace some flowers onto paper you like!
A good review. I like you share what you really feel about the products. I may have to try a set of these and the water color flat brushes. TFSu
Thank you for your honest review. They look like lots of fun.
Beautiful painting
These are so beautiful! Wish they came in bigger sets
Thank you for the watercolor book review. I was concerned about the small elements in the designs so hearing you address this made me feel better - validated I guess? I’ve noticed that I get a bit shaky so precision is hard and I don’t need to inflict that onto myself.
If you ever find a watercoloring book that has larger (but not cutesy) design elements I would love to watch a review.
another bonus that comes with this palette is that you can add up to 21 pans in the tin. the original 12 are very loose after taking it out of the plastics. you can put one extra pan on the top and the bottom, if you own pans that are the same as the winsor and newton half pans, you can put them into middle making a super small compact set. ^^
I use bluetac to keep my pans sliding around!!! Love these!!!
Love the watercolor coloring book!
your thumbnails are goals
Love the colouring book, hope it comes to the UK soon. love your videos thank you for your honestly xxx
Thank you Kristina, I've been dying to know about these and I think I'm gonna order. They look really fun.
Beautiful colors and you do them justice. Too many things on my "I want" list. I'll have to wait.
This video is lovely. I found your channel a couple of days ago and I am really excited to watch more of your videos.
Great review, Kristina! Thanks!
I really like that Prima has come out with the water brushes in the wider tips. I love watching you color, I can only dream about doing that well. I would really like to try watercoloring on some hot pressed paper to see the difference but it is very difficult to find in craft stores and it also seems to be very pricey. I'd love to know how you feel about the difference between the two. Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm using peerless water colors right now and thinking of adding the full line to my set. These look really great for travel though, I love the little pans.
+Elizabeth Bailey Hi Elizabeth! I did a comparison video not to long ago on hot press vs. cold press watercolor papers: ua-cam.com/video/8w2cS22o6Jc/v-deo.html
I would love to see that flower page when it is finished. It is going to be awesome.
very interesting products and great in-depth review!
one thing though (sorry if it was already mentioned in some comment): you don't have to glue the pans to the palette to prevent them from shifting, the metal 'hooks' are meant to hold them in place, you just have to bend them - that way the pans remain interchangeable.
+Talya Stark Unfortunately, the metal clips aren't holding them in place. I've bent them as far as they will go. However, I did get another tip from someone that said to put a bit of removable wall putty (or poster putty) underneath the pans. They will hold them in place but allow for removal later.
+K Werner Design This stuff is awesome... www.containerstore.com/s/need-it/problem-solvers/clear-museum-gel/12d?productId=10007846
Gorgeous colours ✏😊🎨
Thanks for the review. I have prima water color pens and have not been impress with them, but these new color palets looks like they are a better quality.
You could try leaving the type white and coloring in the negative space with a darker color so the lines won't be glaringly obvious? Probably a tricky thing to pull off, but I imagine it to be really beautiful with the right colors
nice review, looking forward to buying a set.
This was a very detailed, thorough review. well done!
It's funny to see that tin, I just got one off of amazon the other day to fill with my own pans - I really like the tin! Thanks for the review, I'm super interested in the paints :)
Love these! Your coloring is AWESOME and your brush writing is BEAUTIFUL! tfs
Thanks for your honesty.
the packaging is really cute
Hi there. Nice review :) I like that you showed the paints alot. 2 things I would like to point out though: It looks like, even though you only did swatching and hallf a watercolour-book page, you made quite a dimple in the colours. They dont look like they will last that long. The other thing you didnt mention is that the paper in the book was pilling. You were being gentle with it, and it still looked like the texture of the paper was lumping up (if thats even a word ;) ) Like with most Prima products the presentation of them is beautiful but the contents don't live up to the packaging.
Very informative, I was on the fence about these due to the fact....do I really need 'more' water colors?! Now I think I do.....Darn you Kristinia ;) Thanks again!!!! Plus they're so darn cute!!!
Thanks for an excellent and knowledgeable test review
I have these water color set and I love it.
I haven't seen coloring books that I would actually use the images. I would prefer to stamp, trace or sketch images onto the size and type of paper I want to use for wall art, cards, tags, journals, etc. I would hate to spend a lot of time coloring in images that aren't in a usable size or to my taste and then have nothing to do with them. Nice demo, enjoy your channel!

I saw a video where someone used watercolor grounds (I bought the Daniel Smith brand) and clear gesso to use on watercoloring books that have thin paper for watercoloring on.
Hello! Just finished watching your review.I love how you are so organized with your watercolors, and that's one of the reasons why Im suscribing to your channel!:)
Hi Kristina, I've just discovered you on YT (you were born to do this!); so I'm commenting on an old video, but I wanted to comment anyway. You said that you wished the Prima colors were a little more transparent. And for the way you like to paint with watercolors I see your point. But there are other brands out there more appropriate for your style. I love how relatively opaque Prima is, and what convinced me was your lettered quote at the very end. The colors are really vibrant, and the relative opacity is probably perfect for how most people use coloring books. I see the Prima pans almost as a more flexible form of marker.
Long ago someone asked me if I preferred my pancakes thin and crepe-y or thick and doughy. I said i liked them both because i saw them as two different foods. I use that analogy for how I view different media. Since I'm only getting started on your dozens of videos, I don't know if you have differentiated in another video how you use Prima pans on your cards to create a style different from your cards where you do blends and ombres. I don't see such a video in the list, but if you have such a video, I'd love to see it.
btw, I work at Michaels and we sell both the Canson watercolor paper and the Arches.
ha! i am happy to see someone else that thinks of the opaque watercolor can take place of marker shading since it is more flexible in that aspect.... i use the kuretake gansai tambi in the way because in has very little transparency.
You could put some blue tack or picture mounting tack to keep them in place without permanently damaging the tin or pans.
I really appreciate your unbiased reviews. I can trust & be confident in purchasing my supplies...which btw you have influenced :) Blessings Deb
Very nice review. Those boxes look so appealing.
Btw, if you want to hold the pans securely in place, take them out of the box and push down the metal holders a little bit. You will be able to snap the pans back and they won't budge anymore. (No need for glue or blue tack to hold them in place.) :D
I need this book and colours!!! Ah!!
great review ! and great colouring too :) would love to see the finished colouring :)
You have beautiful your handwriting/lettering is. I am now planning to give little sets like this for gifts.
I'm a little late to the party, but, I really appreciated your review, Kristina. First, I am more interested in the watercolors themselves. I am not interested in the coloring book. Your review gave me a good look at the colors and I'm glad because I am going to change my order and add the classic pan. I found them on Amazon at a better price point. I liked how little water it took to wet the color. It was excellent review and I am going forward with my order.
Nice colors. Much pigments
hi Kristina, would you be able to do a video reviewing different watercolour sets? I'm especially interested in finding a good compact watercolour pan set.
I really appreciate your honesty
Found these paints at Amazon last night, would like to try these !
your handwriting is AMAZING
I can imagine this paper has nothing on Arches, but still it's pretty interesting to know about a coloring book printed on watercolor paper. A friend of mine does a lot of coloring with watercolor markers and she complains often about how little choice there is on the market especially when you're picky with what you want to color.
Could you maybe use these paints for a background in one of your cards when you have inspiration? I would really like to see how these mix wet on wet and hear your thoughts about it.
I really like the packaging of these watercolors! They are so colorful, inspiring and... tasty looking, haha! Also I love your video and how thoroughly you are! It is really helpful. Thank you for sharing! :)
Thanks for reviewing. I did not know of this company.
Thanks for reviewing the book!! I preordered a while back ago Kristy Rice's "painterly days" watercolor coloring books (3 books) and really looking forward to those for the real watercolor paper for the pages and the overall though put in to the books. I'm going to pick the Prima one up to and give it a go and maybe compare to see the best overall.
+Erin S. Hope you're loving Painterly Days!
+Kristy Rice I am!! So much in fact my daughter thought it would be super fun idea to use her markers over an almost finished page!!!! So I've started a new one that will be monochromatic with a hint pearlescent shimmer....who am I kidding its gonna gleam! Daniel smiths neutral time and their pearlescent shimmer paints are amazing!!!
Oh boy!! Well I'm glad you're both enjoying the book! Would love to see some of your progress posted on our Facebook page! XO
love all your videos
These are between $15 and 20 in Amazon!
