Just started the process of uploading to Pond 5 and this video was really helpful. Thanks David! You are always helpful with information whether that's email or through UA-cam and you've made learning so much easier. I wish you lots of success.
Thanks for the very detailed tutorial. I've been obsessed with recording nature audio since 2009 and I've been waiting for my work schedule to subside a bit and start selling my sounds. This video is a great " get off the ground and get stared " video. Thanks again. Kevin

Hey man I’m an audio engineer/sound designer based in Toronto area, thank you so much for the fantastic info I’ve already started to setup my account on pond5. Keep killing it! Are you based on the west coast? Cheers man
Thanks David, very helpful stuff here! I hadn't considered selling SFX individually before but this video highlighted that it was worth a go. And thanks for pointing out that batch edit feature, which seems weirdly difficult to find on the website! 😃
You’re welcome. Give it a go. You need a decent size library to start seeing income come in (in my experience), but once you do, it’s nice to get sales every month.
thanks man, you dont talk too fast, people's brains are too slow ;) ill try to go for it with some raw sounds, see how it goes on the site, im very curious. your other clips are also great, keep uploading, think youll get more followers eventually, great presentation skills.
How do you avoid any copyright problems and situations when you're creating your own sounds? So for example if I was creating a drone what could I do and could not do just trying to understand
Don’t use other people’s sounds in your sfx. If you create drones from scratch using your own sounds, you’ll be fine. Basically, avoid 3rd party libraries as most do not allow you to design a sound effect and then sell it as your own.
Sorry to question this but would. u be able to ball park what usually you can earn monthly, taking all your venues of revenue, can you give an estimate? I´m really curious, thanks!
It's fine they are a well known company, The vetting process is purposely not so simple so that they make sure that the artists they are working with are also legit, they don't want to deal with people who are not serious in what they do. You will most likely need to show them what you have done as well, they may ask for other sites as proof that you have been designing and recording your own SFX. You may or may not be accepted based on how much you have done. I had to show proof of other sites I was accepted to just to be completely verified, this was years ago not sure if they are still making you jump through a bunch of hoops or not but they may.
@@vidworxsfx YEP they make you jump through ever single hoop. I demanded they just remove me and Ill take my efforts elsewhere. They take a big ole cut anyways.
Yea, technically people could. That is illegal though. To combat that, Pond5 has an audio preview that plays at the same time as your sound effects, so it’s kind of challenging to do.
It depends where those audio sources are from. Most companies have a EULA (End User License Agreement) stating that you cannot sell your sound effect if you layer their sounds. Make sure you read the EULA. It is always safest if you sell sound effects that you created from scratch and recorded yourself.
I'm wondering if one would earn more from Adsense and affiliate marketing if they gave the sound effects for free on UA-cam because the channel would be more active, or by copyrighting and selling them in libraries as you show here. Of course it depends on a variety of factors, though I'd be interested in people's thoughts about this.
Can be any length. Depends what you are creating. If it’s an ambience, it can be over 1 minute long. If it’s a short UI sound, it could be less than 1 second long.
Yea, you should. Depends on the other platforms though. Some platforms are exclusive while others aren't. Some give you the choice to be exclusive or not, so depends.
They keep rejecting my sounds over and over despite giving all the information required, the sounds are good quality mostly focusing around military but they just keep rejecting it with the usual response they send every one. So I don't understand why that is the case.
@@daviddumaisaudio It appears to be the generic one they sent out. However any thing I submit is turned away, the response did say they getting stricter so I suppose someone who is a lone sound guy can't really make it on with background ?
@@daviddumaisaudio Then I don't know why I am always being rejected. are they looking for more background information. Cause I don't have any just a could of mods I worked on for games.
@Kh0rnz Are you fully verified by P5, if so did you make sure that your sounds are created correctly, for one they do not seem to accept any mono sound FX when I had submitted one that was not stereo it was rejected so make sure your stuff is all up to their standards.
I am new at this I just create a Drone sound that is changing notes very slowly that I want to sell any tips of creating great sound cinematic drone sounds thanks
Depends on what kind of cinematic drones you’re creating. I don’t have that much experience creating drones, but for soundscapes, I like to have textures and sounds come in and out over time. Also having a sense of depth is great for soundscapes. Having sounds that sound near and some that sound far is important. If you can have it loop, that would also make it valuable. Hope that helps.
@@daviddumaisaudio but you only set the password. You did not actually use FTP for uploading I believe. It tells you to set your password there, not to type the existing one.
@@robby102938 Yea, you’re right. You need to go to ftp.pond5.com to upload using FTP. When I made the video, I think I was thinking that I had to put in my password to upload the file. Thanks for clarifying.

Hi. Enjoyed the video. In my opinion you speak a little too fast in the beginning, it get's a bit stressful to listen to. Also I think the gain on your microphone is tuned a tiny bit too high, the s's and "mouth sounds" are a bit high. Other than that great video, thank you for the tutorial :)

Thank you man, that video is the greatest help, I'm from Brazil and I will sell my work in pound5 too.

Agreed. Nice pre’s but also the id4 is very functional with its mute button and 1/4inch and 1/8inch jacks for headphones.

Hey friends, what if people take my audio after uploading it on P5 using IDM? I'm from Indonesia. ???
I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. Do you mean what if people steal your audio?
@@daviddumaisaudio Yes Bro. . The audio can be downloaded using IDM ... Will there be a demo audio in certain parts when downloading?

How do I know what dB to normalize my clips to before exporting from Audition?
I don't think Pond5 has a requirement for db levels. Usually, mine are between -22 and -12lufs. Hope that helps.
how long should the sound effects be?
Can be any length. Depends what you are creating. If it’s an ambience, it can be over 1 minute long. If it’s a short UI sound, it could be less than 1 second long.

Personally, I have sold more sound effects than music, but I don’t know if one generally sells better than the other.
