@@mattm5672 Well, in this film the music and sound design are heavily interlinked. In the section of Paul's first encounter with spice, for example, the music and sound design are indistinguishable, and that's true for a lot of the film
@@isaacdalziel5772 Oh yeah definitely. And the composer and sound designers purposefully had a lot of crossover. But I think it's also important to recognize each teams respective contributions to the film.
This was my first time I watched a documentary about designing sounds for a movie. I really like Denis idea that the sound should not be the last thing at the end of making a movie and instead should be a first class citizen! Sound can convey so many different emotions and feelings and thus its as important as everything else. Its really great that there was time for the team to experiment and design something new and at the same time relatable. I did't know the thought process behind sound can be so interesting! thanx so much!
I've worked on and been around some local films in my area and one thing I heard a sound mix engineer say that stuck with me is that sound can make or break a movie, even if its visuals are gorgeous. I've seen a bunch of local short films at festivals and there's been a few with killer visuals, costumes, acting, etc. but pretty badly mixed and lazily edited sound design, and it honestly ruined the immersion because the dialogue was hard to hear and the sounds were cheesy.
I loved the combination of invented languages, music, sign languages, chants . . . I could watch this movie a million times and still get more each time. Masterpiece!
Knowing Dune and having read the books multiple times from age 15 and also believing firmly that perfection is an illusion...This adaptation is the best an adaptation can ever be....Excellence all around....It couldn't have been better especially when u consider how dense and complex the books are
Actors play their part but to have a crew like this. The back bone, the FOUNDATION of making it believable is priceless. Thank you so much and I wish you more great projects now moving forward.
The level of competency in every detail is so inspiring i started to attempt some perfection on anything i did after watching it, its not just about filmmaking its the attitude behind this level of craftsmanship, its something we all should strive for regardless of our job and pay. Its not for the sake of competition with others but with your own standards.
That philosophy about making an Arrakis documentary soundtrack explains why Hans Zimmer didn’t go for some big bombastic score. It’s more akin to his work for Planet Earth, which I loved too.
It blows my mind that sound design isn't conventionally an early part of the pre-production process in film. Concept art informs the look and feel of films at these early stages, I'd have thought sound would be too - particularly in cinema, sound is just as important as visuals to create an immersive experience.
Especially when you consider the fact that during early cinema, all movies were silent. Talented musicians played live during the movies to make an immersive atmosphere, that also conveyed a narrative. It's literally in the roots
To get a sense of what they are talking about, one needs to have watched it in a big theatre, preferably IMAX or Atmos…because it is out of this world. No premium home entertainment sound system is going to do any justice..simply because home video formats-streaming or blurays don’t have the sonic dynamic range that you’d get in a theatre..!! Can’t wait for Part 2
A personalized home theatre using high grade gear most certainly could give an amazing experience but not a cinema theater grade because of the space and shear size of the speakers.
I’ve read the books so I was extremely excited to see it visualized cinematically. Such a stunning movie to put it mildly. But wow, the sound team outdone themselves too. When I heard ‘the voice’ for the first time it made me physically flinch. Really gritty, insidious and powerful- perfectly portrays the ability of the voice and the Bene Gesserit. Hearing the team explain their decisions of sound design really shows the amount of effort and thought put into every scene.
Dune is a total Masterpiece! Everyone who expects perfection has to watch this movie (the Trilogie) and will be not disappointed! The music is epic.. fits the pictures and storyline!!! Only the sound of Shai Hallut, the big one coming up to Paul... is nothing less than impressive, I thought a big Jet motor married with a Hurricane and a T Rex scream is coming at us... Stunning! Everything is huge in Dune... the sounds are so cool! It really is a psychedelic trip that is for sure... Denis has his mission accomplished, that I can say as a Viewer! My favorite movie from the last 15 years that is for sure!
