  • We're back at the request of our viewers with another big old boat tour! This time we tour a 1985 Cheoy Lee 43, a sailboat that Randi and I have been wanting to tour for some time now. We really like the design of this yacht and believe it to have a lot of potential as a full-time live aboard cruiser for a couple or a small family. This particular boat is the single-masted cutter-rigged model, as opposed to the more common ketch rig.
Please let us know in the comments below if you'd like to see more interesting old boats!

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

Yup, she’s an old movie star that has been all over the world for sure. Just like old movie stars it takes a lot of money and love to get them ready preform.
I’ll bet $200K would barely scratch the surface towards getting her back to her glory days. I saw pealing paint on the headliner in several places. Deck is likely mushy in a few spots. And who knows what’s going on with the hull.

Hey guys! We LIVE ON a Cheoy Lee 41 and will be sailing around the world soon. If you want more information on Cheoy Lee Yacht's feel free to reach out, as there is a lot of history behind them. Did you know that when the boats were being built, there was one craftsman per boat that would build the interior while living aboard with his family? We are still in contact with the old yards and will be making a video on the history soon. Cheers ~

I have owned a Boatyard/ Marina for years and am very in tune as to the amount of work this boat will need. I am astounded by the price tag on this boat. I guess the owner doesn’t want to sell.
I would place a value on this vessel at approximately 20 K. And god bless the person who purchases her. They better know what they are in for.

I think the seller will need to accept $10k or less ... it needs a complete rebuild ... many of the ports and hatches are leaking and all the mechanicals, and cosmetically its a mess ... sad state of disrepair ... im not familiar with how this Cheoy Lee hull is constructed however based on the neglect above the water I can imagine below the waterline is a soggy mess

Last week I thoroughly examined a 1980 Cheoy Lee 48 designed by Robert Perry. Beautiful sheer line and wonderful interior - but the build quality was awful! The hull was constructed of just matt, no woven roving, so it is not nearly as strong as it should be. The hull thickness just above the turn of the keel was 5/8" - on the light side - especially considering there was no woven roving in the layup. The bulkheads were lightly tabbed to the hull with one layer of six inch wide roving (not enough) and the deck was attached solely at the hull/deck flange - was not tabbed to the bulkheads - a serious oversight. The deck sole and cabin sides were 1/4" thick layup of matt; again, no woven roving for strength. The forward deck was glassed to 1/2' plywood strips with one layer of 2 ounce matt glassed on the bottom for a sandwich; again, inadequate! The aft part of the deck and cabin top/sides had no matt on the bottom at all, just bare plywood, so there was no sandwich at all. Wiring and plumbing was chaotic. All in all, a very poorly built boat that depended on the headliner to hide the defects. I understand the early Cheoy Lee Pedrick designed boats in 1981 also were made of pure matt with no woven roving. It seems prudent to me to avoid Cheoy Lee boats made in the early eighties and make sure your surveyor closely examines a thru-hull hole to check the layup. And definitely some of the headliner needs to come down to see if the deck is properly cored and glassed both sides.

Interesting boat. An excellent fixer-upper for someone with a vision. I don't see the cutter in it though, the mast is still too far forward like a sloop. A cutter rig has the mast more amidship. This allows for more foresails. Anyhow, the Ford Leiman engines are outstanding, reliable, and easy to get parts for almost anywhere in the world. It's definitely the engine I have in mind for my diesel-electric hybrid, plenty of reserve power for auxiliary attachments too. There's plenty of room in the engine bay for a generator and anything else one might need. That's the second boat tour, that I've seen, where the hatchway is offset to one side, and I have to say I like it.

Interesting boat. If you guys want a boat that will really be worth something when you are done you have to go high quality to start with. The perfect boat for you is the Bristol 43.5. The Bristol decimal series was built thru the 80's to early 90's. They are New England built simular to Hinckley and Little Harbor. The glass work is perfect , the interior woodwork is built in place. They have no inner glass liner. Looking about the interior even the bilges are gelcoat smooth. The 43.5 is a great layout check it out, very livable. I would not mess with an electric conversion just me this is a big boat and good dependable power is really a safety issue. They usually sell well north of 100k. But Martin Bird Associates in Annapolis has one listed asking 59k. This is a worthwhile project. Hope some lucky U tuber takes advantage of it so I can watch this fine yacht cruise again.

    • @LearningtheLines
      @LearningtheLines  5 років тому +4

Exactly. Even in Florida the coldest I've ever been is in the middle of a windy night out in the cockpit on watch. Also, no chance of falling overboard while at the helm is a huge plus.

Of course the bigger boat really drives up the cost of maintenance and operation. Do you want to spend your time sailing or earning money to support your sailing? There is a lot to be said for going small and getting out there.

A decent motor-sailor,and with out the extra ketch rig complication, all the usual issues with an old boat but lots of room and a nice compromise with a good engine that would get used a lot as do 95% of all sailboats. May as well do it in comfort but still look a little salty.who cares if its a 'Blue water' boat or not .it would make a great boat for the Bahamas and US east coast. not as classy as some similar boats like a Naticat range , Victory 40, or the old Fisher range but at a better price and about $50k she could come to life and make a decent cruiser. But difficult to get your money back if not one of the big names. This has been sitting a while so getting a boat that is currently being actively used would make it worth a lot more. A pilothouse motor-sailor is a great way to go compared to a cramped old sailboats. in good condition I would look at something like that for retirement. thanks for posting, cheers warren

Thanks for this tour and chat. I was not aware you kids were contemplating a change since you have worked so hard in refitting you current boat and have it almost done. This boat was certainly large enough for gusts or charters but it will need quite a bit of cosmetic work especially the interior. Love all of that beautiful wood! That Ford Lehman should be a good reliable power plant but what about a generator? I didn’t see any solar either. You must be on school break and it is nice to see you dear.

The thing with all these taiwan boats, is you have to dig into the guts of the boat, and ignore the pretty furniture... many early choey lee glass boats had serious blister problems... you have to look at how the bulk heads are tabbed to the hull , how the systems were built, at the through hulls, the piping and wiring... especially at the decks and house construction. wood decks and poorly encapsulated cores in "glass:" decks can be rotten. What looks like solid glass often isn't...so every top side fitting is a potential source of leaks, and soggy cores. Plus.. the Costs Increase with the Square or the Cube of the Boat Size... so unless you can afford to keep a good 42 footer... you surely cant afford to keep and upgrade a bad one. One the other hand.,... IF you know what the fuck you are doing, (which essentially means you could survey the thing yourself and not get any big surprises) and have cash resources and time.. there are many neglected boats to be had at a fraction of the market price for a good one. Question is how many years and how many skills do you have to put to the test ? If you are being led around by the nose by rosy cheeks and perky tits.. you are doomed.

Once refurbished (and you paid maybe $75,000) this would be a perfect motorsailer for the North West, our summers are relatively wind free >80% of the time, mornings of glass like seas and moderate breezes in the afternoon. If you take a trip through the inside passage from Vancouver to say Prince Rupert in July, with the odd exception you’ll be motoring 90% of the time. If you only sail you might arrive before summer’s done? 😂

I'm a sucker for these boats with a wheel house but this one doesn't rate the price tag. Additionally, I would be over every inch of this one with a moisture meter. It would probably make a decent live aboard but it would require too much work and money for blue water cruising.

Cheoy Lees usually are built in fantastic quality and with top notch materials .... one of the reasons why Cheoy Lees often still live after years or even decades of mistreatment and neglect. 119 k still is way too much for a boat in this condition , and a mere motorsailer at best, not a sailboat. The interior is more of a shoreline/daytrip cruiser layout, but a lotta people don't plan long crossings anyway.

We didnt even know we hit it until it popped up on the side of the boat. We thought we ran aground. It bend the pulpit, broke the dolphin striker and put a scratch on the side of the boat. That was it. Other boats we might have sank. It made a huge believer in me as to the strength of a Choy Lee. What a great boat !!

Needs a lot of custom work, priced way way to high. Maybe $55,000 for boat. Then your going to need 75k-100k for upgrades unless you do all work yourself maybe can be done for 40k..it’s a old rusty rotten boat that the owner is still attached to the boat trying to get that price. He must realize tons of other boats on the market. 55k would be a price to sell

And wouldn't it be sweet to see her in Bristol condition? She just needs a taller mast and a mizzen mast to give her some more sail area and she'd be ready to go... Lol keep up the boat tours guys! Like the old boat tour, but without listing the asking price for anyone even remotely considering this makes it a bit pointless.
Perry design so off to a good start. Nice first impression walking up to it, and while a Pilot House has lots to love, implies it is likely a motor sailor (which it is) and a negative personally. I really do love the design layout interior, yea I can see how all those steps will be a con but tbh one would not likely walk from the rear up and back down and down again to the front much. Majority of the time would likely just be going from one living space to adjacent one. EXCEPT anyone staying at one of the rear berths, as they are more likely to need to go from lounge/kitchen back and forth more often. Anyone it is nice boat that yes does need some TLC, bit of cost and time on repairs but not like a complete rebuild or anything excessive. That big engine and being a motor sailor is its big killing point for me personally. Would love to know how it sails in light winds, but have my doubts considering that was not what was designed for.

  • @daniellawson9302

I really enjoyed this tour. Many things about this boat would make for a grand sail. I liked that it was roomy and the prisms that brought in natural light is a big plus for me. The large main cabin is like a dream come true, as well as the two quarter berths and the two wet heads. The pilothouse would be awesome for sailing on those rainy and windy days at sea. The powerful engine would make sailing those calm days a breeze.
Well, those were the pros. The cons list is just as long, starting with the asking price at $119K. Let's just say that seems rather steep for the amount of work that this boat needs. New sails would set you back quite a few dollars for quality sails. But it's the multitude of little things that will drag you down here.
All in all, I loved this boat and the tour and would love to see more of the same. See both of you on the next tour, and thanks for bringing us along.

I love your show. I liked the enclosed cabin, like you said 360 degree enclosed view in case of bad weather. The boat seems rough, too much needed work for me. I do love ya’ll demoing these boats, I think it is so cool. I would love to own a boat and do not know hardly anything about sailing. I owned 3 fresh water boats before my accident in which the Postal truck I was stopped in got rear ended by a guy going 60-65 mph and knocked the truck over a 1/10 of a mile from the point of impact. It has been years and I have a bad instability all through my neck and had to sell my boats years ago but I sure would like to try going out on a boat again in order to see if I could own one again. I learn more about some of the functions and a lot about the lay out from watching ya’lls channel. Thank you so very much.

I noticed a couple of things while looking at the listing page. The first is that according to the diagram of the original layout this was originally built as a ketch. The aft mast was removed possibly for the huge cockpit awning? This would be a “No” from me.
