- This boat was built in 1972 by Camper & Nicholsons, and she's crossed the Atlantic three times since then. She needs some work, as all old boats do, but she's got great bones and is looking for her new owner to bring her back to her glory days
We really like her design, with the protected helm in the center cockpit, good engine location and access, and a sensible layout down below. At the current dirt cheap (in our opinion) asking price, we think she's a worthwhile project for someone looking for an old boat.

I have watched your sailing adventure since you first bought Somnium, (an O'Day 272 happens to be one of the many boats I have owned in my life as well). Sew sails, install roller furlers, rip out nasty carpet install galley, motor, lithium-ion electric, etc. Looking forward to your future life and adventures, Freebe or otherwise.

A well built 48 foot boat with the interior of a 38 footer. Narrow, only a 34' waterline mean a small interior. Given it's dated design from the 1960s, and the amount of money required to update the boat, there are simply better options. That's why this boat has been on the market for at least two years without selling.

Great to have Y'all back! This was one of the better boats, I'd have liked to see more of her, but I understand time constraints. It was the layout I liked, efficient, and unlike the standard rent-A-cruse boat designs with staterooms to dazzle, this one is set up for the salty old sea dogs like me; she's a bluewater cruising vessel, and not a weekend island hopper for mon, dad, and the kids. One of the many advantages of a ketch-rigged boat is the ability to carry a lot of sail, but the square footage beginning divided between the main and mizzen. You're not trying to handle one big sail, a lot of work, but two smaller sails, and as Jordan mentioned, you have much better reefing options. One thing better than a ketch rig is a cutter ketch. I noticed she is masthead rigged. By adding a 4 to 6-foot bowsprit, one could move the foresail/jib forward, allowing room for a fractional inner staysail, effectively turning her into a very practical cutter-ketch, which is my most favored rig.
The interior is just right, very few things I'd change, but the first thing would be the heater, a diesel heater is the way to go; propane units use too much fuel, save the propane for your stove, you're going to need it. As to berths, there okay if your living aboard or at anchorage, but under sail, especially heeled, a bunk is not that cool, and think about two people trying to sleep in a double berth at a 25-degree angle. Get the picture? When you're crossing the Atlantic, or out in the Pacific, you're not stopping for the night, there are no anchorages, and that's where the good old hammock comes in. For the money she's a good buy, I'd offer $45k, cash if in the market for a boat that big.
In closing, I want to take a moment to tell you why your boat tours are so unique, there are others, I'm sure you know, that do the same. Still, they always do expensive eye-dazzling new, or already fixed up boats, and way out of the everyday sailer's budget. Y'all show non-standard designs, unique, fixer-upper boats with interesting stories behind them that, in most cases, are affordable to many of your viewers. You both have an eye for the interesting and unique, I like that, and it's what makes you such an interesting and compatible couple. Keep up the excellent work!

I like the cutter ketch idea, that'd be my first move with this boat. I really liked it. There's a few fun modifications that could be done.

I really like this boat. I know it's small and narrow and would love to see it wider and more Berthing. But it's small and compact and I might be able to afford it. My search is for something with more space and I am looking for a gem of a deal otherwise I will not play with a sellers time. Thank you so much for these tours. A Navy man like my father and my Grandfather was a Longshoreman off the Brooklyn Docks. I want to retire in Puerto Rico with my mother and have a good boat to sail. Great to see a new video from you guys. This is a classic, Camper and Nicholson made some very famous yachts and made quality yachts. I visited their yard in Gosport UK many times and whilst the design is a bit dated below she has a great hull shape. Funnily enough there was a Nic 48 ketch for sale in the UK only a few weeks back and similar condition for £20k UK pounds. Yes it is small below compared to a modern boat but it will sail really well and keep you safe which is not always the case with modern production boats. Needs lots of tlc and some minor rethinks but would make a great liveaboard and a sturdy and safe passage maker. Pretty sure the holes are for ventilation but I could be wrong. Hope you guys can get back on the water more full time in a boat for the longer term but I love these videos as I am always curious to see inside yachts and you don’t just look around nice shiny and expensive, way over budget yachts. Keep at it and hope you get out on Freebee a bit more this year. Andy UK
Boy-O-Boy it's been a while since your last episode (with the reasons being explained here). I like this boat too. It looked to be in pretty good shape, but I also wondered about there not being a nice large sleeping area, fore or aft. Built in Dec. of 1972, my 20' boat even has a nice V-berth with no "chain tube" to get in the way in the middle. Oh, and I'm happy you got to sail FreeBee, at least briefly. UA-cam probably hasn't told you, but I wonder what they did with the person who made that false report. Glad to see that you're back! Scott W

True, but at what cost? We have at least one viewer here that seemingly had his sense of decorum and ultimately his whole world turned upside down. Expected to be able to remember the name of the channel and thereby being able to avoid exposure to the whole sordid enterprize and it's objectives. It's hardly a task one man should have to bare alone.!

It's great to see you guys again. The UA-cam copyright strike system is a joke and it's hit us on our channel too. Fortunately they are making changes for the better but it's still not great. I hope this was a one and done for your guys but you never know. Next time don't hesitate to upload a Patreon video just saying that you guy are okay. =)

Glad to see you back. Think you did a good evaluation of this boat. Totally agree with you that it seems narrow for it's length. Maybe it sails really fast because of that. No way to know really. The berthing situation almost looked right. The bunks aft of the cockpit would be perfect for a couple crossing oceans and need to be able to get help in a hurry. The forward berth does seem strange in it's inability to sleep a couple comfortably. Not what you'd expect from a boat of this length.
The older a boat is the more charm they have.

Ketch rigs are also great because that mizzen can be used to balance your sail plan and load on your steering (which would also ease the load that autopilot will have to deal with). I have sailed Ketch rigs in heavy winds nearly hands free, and, after you get used to the way the boat rides, literally feel the shifts in the wind just in the way she feels.

This would be well worth my time and money, to bring her back to pristine condition. I loved this presentation. However, I must say all of your presentation's are top notch to me ! Very well worth every minute. I am looking seriously for a great older yacht, I can invest my time and money into. This brings back old happy memories, of a yacht I lived and sailed bluewater in years ago . Great memories! I was first mate, and loved sleeping on the starboard long bench, in the protected inside wheel house. Great yacht find you guy's, thank you ! Mark. P.S. Very nice boat ! I also like the large, deep center cockpit. The 2 cabins and the walk through "tunnel" are great. About the only negative is the tube for the anchor chain. Not a fan of ketch rigging. A lot of $$$ in sails and standing and running rigging for how much more speed ?

A drippless shaft seal is the best way. graphite works. at least for my wake boat, I have had no leaks this year so far and the PPS seal really works.

I would have thought that the narrow beam would let it cut through the water more efficiently, saving diesel, and increase speed. Be less choppy too. Like the enclosed cabin very much. Best of the bunch you've looked at lately.
You know? That's what i wonder too. It seems like there must be some perfect beam for a particular length of boat and deviate outside that parameter and here come the critical commenters widen it out and they will say it sails like a pig and it's more akin to a floating condo. Of course i understand that there is truth to that. Having stumbled across a few that stun you dock side with dimensions that surely would resign a boat to eternal sailing purgatory. I didn't think this one would be on the narrow side given the sailing advantages as such which come with the narrow beam i thought there might be more praise for a boat built for the swift passage.
Yes, many attributes to a center cockpit designed hull. Event the shorter ones like the Hunter 32' are totally cool weekenders for a crew. Protected helm stations are always a great attribute, problem is they are rarely found in anything but motorsailers in shorter hulls. Those cabinets would be out of the tunnel and a work bench put in. BUT, 49K and a few years work it will be far better. I don't blame you for going back to a drip packing tube. There is nothing with one of those you should not be able to easily fix underway. Can't say that for the dripless. Waiting for you guys to check out a Morgan 41. Plenty of em out there! Problem I have personally with 48' is that I do not want the boat to own me. Just me, no need for all that much boat. I'd be chained to the thing through my time and my wallet. But for younger people looking at families and what not, yup I'd be into something that large.

Not a bad boat layout and the protected cockpit, great. Would offer 40-35k for it. If its a fin keel, then 30k.

So out of all the big old boats you've shown, have ANY sold? In 90 days or less?
On the topic of seaworthiness, that giant deep cockpit will hold water if you're unfortunate enough to take a wave in there. Companionway doors should have the swing reversed and be sure the scuppers are adequate to drain the cockpit quickly enough.
