Fix your Dewalt 20V MAX Li tools!! Easy fix for intermittent problem.

  • I show you a common problem on the Dewalt 20V lithium tools and how it can be fixed.
In this video after opening the tool I found the tool was still OK and the battery was the culprit, but I show you the trouble area to look for.
The symptoms are: tool cuts out intermittently, functions better in one position and not another, and the LED worklight will flash.

As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.

You just saved me 250 bucks! I took my impact apart expecting a cold solder or something and couldn't find anything wrong... But then I found your video and indeed the wire was broken exactly where you said it would be! I'm eternally grateful. So are my neighbors because I can go back to using the electric impact instead of the air gun. 😁

Thanks for your posting! My issue turned out to be the yellow wire from the battery connection had been pinched between the two halves of the case after we replaced the brushes. Your video gave me a hint of another avenue to explore!

Thanks very much indeed. Following your advice, just ust repaired my DCD 785. You have saved me about £100.00 (Don't know what the equivalent is in US $!) I have resurrected mains powered (corded) power tools in the past. Seems to me that the boxes that mains powered tools are supplied in are so tight that the flex is forced to bend in order to get them back into their boxes. Metal fatigue causes the L, N and earth to break. Simplest thing is to dismantle strp down and re-wire. Thanks again.

    • @CrawfordMethod

Tristan I believe that Porter Cable, Black and Decker, and Dewalt are all under the same corporate umbrella. Please report back on your results!
The “pull trigger, light flashes once” failure mode seems to indicate that the “3rd wire” is not making a good circuit from the circuit board in the battery to the trigger module in the tool. In my experience the #1 cause is a broken wire at the connection from the tool battery baseplate. This connection is usually soldered, and I think the solder makes the wire solid, and then the wire breaks at the transition from where the solder ends to the unsoldered stranded wire. Sometimes it is obvious, and sometimes this break is up inside the insulation a little bit! I always tug on the wire, or use a razor knife to cut the insulation back a bit to inspect.
      Good luck!

So I am hoping your fix works on my hammer drill because that sucker costs a lot. Going to start with the cheap drill before going into the hammer drill. I did not buy today because I noticed some are made in USA. So I will research that like a mission to Mars. Thanks for the starting point. Before I spend $200 bucs. 😄

Great video. Took my impact driver apart for same symptoms. Turns out one of my smaller wires were loose at the circuit board. Ripped the plastic connector off and soldered straight to the board.
BTW the extra two wires read 7volts across them, Im assuming these connect between cells to provide a lower voltage to power the computer circuit on the tool.

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 4 роки тому +1

That's not what they're for, and in general, drawing from anything less than all the cells in a pack is a recipe for a dead pack.

Are any of these model DCD985? I have owned my DCD985 since brand new in mid-2012. Only used as a homeowner, not a contractor. For awhile now, maybe a couple of years (I don't use it everyday) it seemed as though the drill was not getting full-power. I attributed this to failing batteries as the original Dewalt batteries weren't holding charge for very long as of last year when I stopped using them they were about 9 years old. So I purchased brand new batteries which are very strong but the problem persists. I noticed that if I manipulate the trigger switch or squeeze really hard that I will once again get full power. So it seems like the switch is at fault or dirty. I understand I can purchase a replacement but most folks who replace them have NO operation of the drill at all. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile investigating or cleaning the switch if that is even possible? Or do you believe it to be simply worn out?

Hey Carl I bought a DCD999 TY1 about a year back and I've noticed the torque only works intermittently. I returned the first one I bought for another and it seems to be a design problem - just wondering if this issue is common or if mine are just from a bad batch.
Let's say torque is set to 1. Minimal resistance should cause the drill to slip. If I set it to 1 and hold the chuck with my hand, it will slip on the first press of the trigger. If I press the trigger again it will turn with full force and not slip. I've learned the hard way a couple times for more delicate work, where I set a low torque setting and turned a screw way too tight when the it refused to slip.

Presently, whenever I take my finger off the trigger it slows down making a grinding kind of sound that would make one think it needs lubrication. Thanks for posting, I was hoping this was going to be the fix for me, sadly it was not. My symptom: install battery, pull trigger, works until trigger is released then dead, pull battery and start again. Turned out my problem was bad clamping diode at bottom of switch, shorted in both directions.

Steve, I believe I may have the same problem as you've described. Can you elaborate on how you fix yours?
