The reason they included so many creatures with Reach in this set in particular is assuredly because there are two whole archetypes centered around flying creatures-UW Birds and BW Bats. Otherwise, they could easily be too oppressive in certain matchups.
Wear Down flavortext: The birdfold guards flitted angrily, "Seriously, Timbles? Again?!" Timbles the beaver's Reparations: "Sorry I gnawed down your nests. Here's a card."
Thank you so much for recording after you've had a chance to play with the cards. Love that this is almost four hours. You guys have some hefty lifting to do with Haumph out of the picture(wishing him and his family the best) but you guys sure give him a run for his money
God fucking shit, how is every opponent drawing like they have sacrificed at least their first 5 children to some unspeakable eldritch god? So much fun to be basically dead on board by turn 5 every game while every relevant creature get's killed on sight
I really like Luis’s point about how the cards that look like mice work with mice, etc. I know it’s hand holding but it’s also super simple for new players and it just makes sense from a set perspective. cards like raccoon rallier are a bit weird tho, as they seem to actually be better in an archetype that’s not thier creature type
Just realized how much reach in the set it's definitely there to fight the bats and bird flying decks. Hopefully it doesn't hurt those decks to much but definitely need to watch out for that sneaky reach. It also kinda reminds me of murders were lots of kill spell had can't be counted to fight the ward of disguise making it much worse.
Ruthless Negotiation seems pretty cool. The initial "exile the worst card from your hand" cast seems like the worst 'mode' of the card. It really wants to hit for 5, snatch the top end off your opponent's hand while also netting you a card. The initial cast from your hand almost feels like more of a safety net just so you can put it in the graveyard yourself without actually going down on cards. Any payoff at all for having cast a spell seems good, plus with all the surveil in the set this card basically "draws" itself when surveiled. Or if you're looking for Threshold, the first cast does start your graveyard filling early. Either it's the "bad card I'm overexcited about" of the set or the sleeper.
LSV, I've been losing more drafts than I ever have and it has been frustrating. Thank you for sharing your recent losses in Cub. It happens, its sucks, but at least I know it happens to the best. I'll take a short break, refocus, and get back in there with a clear head. Thank you both for the reviews!
1:02:05 So LSV mispeaks here a bit; Dire Downdraft can only hit attacking or tapped creatures, so unless they block with a creature which is then tapped by an effect you're not able to do that.
Feather of Flight, why does it have flash? If something has been assigned to block your creature it still blocks if you flash it in right? Is it just to surprise your opponent to block a flyer or setup your next turn?
another reason that Racoon Rallier is limited to sorcery speed is to make it play better on Arena. No need to give me priority 3-4 times on my opponent's turn when I'm tapped out.
My hot take of the set is starforged sword. Everything has reach anyways so the lose flying is whatever, with the red class enchantment you dont even have to gift the fish as well. This thing can be a real beating in RW or RG.
I think they're off-base on Heirloom Epic too, it's put some real work in for me. It's so cheap to put into play that I don't find it's slowing me down at all; (4) sounds expensive to activate, but with various token decks, random Fish you might be given, and particularly Offspring you probably don't want to attack or chump with I find I can often get that down. Curves are also pretty low in this set it seems, emptying my hand has been a real thing and just digging a second card each turn has been real. I guess it could be argued that another creature would serve me better, but so far I've had good luck with it.
I think we are very used to drafting colors and have the synergies bake in into it, but I have a feeling the secret of this set is that we are drafting tribes not colors, picking a solid card outside of your tribe might be worst than picking a mediocre card in your tribe that gives you critical mass to trigger your synergies. During the early access I saw a bunch of decks with decent cards that did nothing because they had no other support, and a bunch of commons in tribe doing amazingly well.
I'm thinking that some of the aggro archetypes are probably going to be the winners of the set. Love the aesthetic of the set but I think we might have another MKM-like set on our hands where Wx aggro just bulldozes the hell out of everyone. Frogs doing bounce-to-hand shenanigans sounds cute until you realize you've got 1 thing on board and they swing for 15+ damage.
@@51gunner Maybe. blue has a bunch of big defense vigilant creatures, bats have lots of life gain and bunnies have tons and tons of blockers so aggro might not be as oppressive, but we will see
@@thanatos022 Good points. I'm skeptical of lifegain as a general strategy but it could blunt aggro enough just to let BW bats swing back and win the race. I'm more interested in it as a Standard build of some kind though - I think the LCI bats (inc. Aclazotz) add a lot. Two of those archetypes (bats, bunnies) are also white though. Blue vigilant creatures could be a solid point though - pressure while not letting defenses down at all?
@@51gunner there is also food for squirrels that might keep them alive long enough to stabilize. Yes those are white too but like I said, I suspect that drafting tribes is going to be so much better than drafting good stuff in your color, mice and bunnies might be able to play well together but bats play very differently, which means even if aggro is good not every deck should feel the same
2:00:32 This is a functional reprint of Cartouche of Zeal from Amonkhet, which LSV hints at when he says "we've seen this card before." I remember that cartouche overperforming, so I'm keeping my eye on this.
2:00:00 I played R/G in prerelease and Might of the Meek was good for me. It pushed damage with trample on some of the creatures that got big but didn’t have trample (like the gold mana dork) and it also helped get to expend if you have a 3 drop on 4 - draws a card to have more to play the next turn. Just felt good!
On the Reach topic: I really hate that new Reach animation in arena. Part of the fun in limited is surprising with the sneaky reach when your opp alpha strikes with their flyers. Why isn't there a first strike animation on the cards then?
2:21:01 Wildfire Howl is great in R/G - all your creatures surviving is great. I think it’s tricky in U/R because it kills most of your creatures too a lot of the time!
I will say… Wax-Wane Witness did some WORK against me. That incidental lifegain in the bat deck lets this thing swing for 4, 5, or 6 almost every turn. Plus most of your other enablers in that deck are in the 2, 3, and 5 drop slot so it being at 4 actually helps you be on curve.
Excellent breakdown! Thanks a lot. Three tree scribe is definitely not a D in non-frog decks though, its much higher. Dont think they remembered that exiling creatures will trigger it. And C- for Treeguard Duo?! Wow did they miss on that one. I dont know many draft games ended because of this card. Its a B in my book any day of the week.
@1:56:38 - It's absolutely possible - that's a big part of how Nadu is currently wrecking Modern. There's not usually any reason to pay the mana to activate an equip ability like this, but it's still totally possible.
@LimitedResourcesPodcast Thank you, Luis and Marshall, for the set review. I couldn't determine what grade you gave Druid of the Spade (2:48:39). Luis, you said that "it's good in green-white, playable in green-black, and I don't think particularly good in red-green or uh blue-green." Did you mean it's a "B" in green-white? If so, is that "B+", "B" or "B-"? Likewise, should we consider it a "C+", "C", or "C-" in green-black, and a "D+", "D", or "D-" in red-green or blue-green?
It's probably like a C- outside of the decks that regularly make tokens and C+ in the ones that do. Flat D if you have just no ways at all to make tokens. The floor is a vanilla 2/3 for three mana. Not horrible but if you really have no way to make it better than a 2/3 you should probably replace it in the deck, and if you have no better creatures and are just playing it to fill a spot on your curve... classic D. If you have a couple ways to get a token then it's probably trending to C-, just this 2/3 that sometimes performs better. If you have a bunch of ways to make tokens (I.E. you're the rabbit deck) then this is an okay payoff. You probably want better payoffs than this for your deck but it's definitely nice to include a slightly overstatted trampler in the wall o' rabbits you want to hit your opponent with. It scales up even nicer with the stuff like Warren Elder where it might just get bigger. I don't think it gets up to the B range at all but C+ feels right.
what are people's thoughts of coruscation mage in RG as a way to expend 4 while not loading up on 4+ drops? You can drop it early as just a 2/2 then spend 4 later
Do you remember tolarian terror? It often cost only 1-3 mana in limited. Don't see why it shouldn't be possible to get this crab down to 2-4 in izzet spells on the regular.
Tbh, I'm looking forward to identifying cards by animal color combo moving forward rather than Ravnica guild association. "Hey, you brought you izzet deck?" "Nah, I brought my otter deck." (Even though there aren't otters in the deck) 🤣
@limitedresources I thought this would be a good place to ask you guys. When you've won prizes for the arena open did you use Ewallet? I just won an arena direct and it's asking for ssn so I just wanted to see if that was legit
for all the criticism Luis gets for picking his nose and drafting off screen, Marshal should probably pay better attention to him when he does speak - 1:17:15 he asks what cost is good for the crab, when LSV said so a minute earlier.

Phew, just in time. I thought I’d have to use my own brain to figure out the prerelease.
Same. We have a couple of pre pres today and I’m gonna just go in blind.
Limited Level Ups is also good brain training wheels
I can help you out here. You should just drop and go home if you don't open a viable RW pool.

maro has said exactly that, I am worried that they overcorrected in that regard
Yep, and I like that the G removal spell for Enchant/Flyers also has a stable Draw+Food Mode attached so it's more viable in Bo1.
Every time Marshall takes a drink there’s a split second where I think he’s drinking a super hazy IPA.
"Persistent Marshtalker, that's when there's a fan who won't leave you alone" Luis has been waiting for DAYS
