Supplementary: The shadows in the crane sequence change because on a 2D screen, depth perception is... putting it diplomatically, tricky. By placing the shadow immediately underneath the object, the player can tell exactly where it will land if dropped down.
I played through the leaknet beta and it sure was more annoying without the shadow
It'd be hard in VR, too, depth perception isn't that powerful that far away

oh wow! that invisible wall at 1:58 must be left over from when d2_coast_04 was part of the wasteland (I think as e3_seafloor?) and had the railway bridge going through it. you can see it in old screenshots on the overwiki and elsewhere. guess someone forgot to remove a collision box!

I assume its well-known that in EP2’s intro, a lot of the train cars you moved through after waking up just get deleted before the setpiece starts (when passing through the 2 closed doors in the one cart that you opened with the gravgun) ?
No I didn’t know that. I got curious and tried to exploit my way back to see what it looked like.
@@haroldgage7347 Its not really visible unless you use mat_wireframe. I presume this is done because Gray Horsfield's destruction animation (the setpiece) was designed after the carts were positioned in place like they were in the intro, as indicated by the developer commentary. The fragments from the setpiece would have probably phased through the carts otherwise.

I imagine the author just likes discovering secrets in games. And Half-Life didn't offer him enough of those :)
I like looking for secrets in games too. This came back from my childhood, when my father played Doom and Quake, and I watched, sometimes - played. He doesn't like too much challenge in FPS games, because he values other aspects - like exploration. Often Doom and such were called 'Roam games' in my mother tongue (literal translation of rus. 'Бродилка') - for the same reason, I think.

Fact you might be able to use in a coming video:
During the chapter "Sandtraps" In half life 2, in the area just before the lighthouse, where the car battery puzzle happens, two dropships will appear, one of which carrying a pod with combine soldiers. If you destroy the carried pod before any combine can get out, meaning 3 rockets and 1 grenade on hard difficulty, one of the gunships will get weirdly stuck in place in the sky, above the tunnel, as the other one flies away.

Probably just tied it to the door opening and either forgot to set it to trigger once or just figured that nobody would open the door more than once

I'm now encouraged to do videos concerning reality shifts pertaining to HL2. I played it first in November of 2004 so I do remember what that version was like. Recently I downloaded that old version and oh boy did it change! Completely not how I remember it back in 2004, all the new stuff, props and NPCs were added

did you also know that in the sandtraps level where you are supposed to stay off the sand, there is a cliff edge where if you punt the antlions off of it without killing them, you can walk on the sand without any antlions ambushing you? Note: if you are doing the achievement where you don’t trigger a single antlion attack, you may want to ignore this little trick. Otherwise, it will make your journey towards Nova Prospect a LOT easier
The antlions start fearing you when they see your cliff-pushing powers.
Is it because they're still alive down there so the game thinks there's enough of them and doesn't spawn more?
@@thebiggestcauldron The game only spawns a certain number of antlions at a time. By punting them off the cliff, they are still alive, but can't fly high enough to get over the cliff (and since its technically out of bounds, they just sit there and do nothing). There is only one other antlion that you encounter after punting the main 5 or 6 off the cliff, and seeing as that antlion wasn't spawned, instead having already been there regardless of whether or not you stepped on the sand--you can kill that one without consequence. The ground will still rumble, but no antlions will spawn.
Further disclaimer though: this is a good hack if you just want to get through the level. If you are trying to do the achievement where you never touch the sand at all, you should instead traverse the level the normal way.
