Too bad you didn't include the clip of me dying on a single segment run right as I was trying to enter the last pod ride of the game as intended, no speedrun strats nothing, and the game just saying no and yeeting me off into death.
Never been a better time, in fact, now that the HL2 saga got updated for Steam Deck which brought *a lot* of fixes and improvements along with it, many of them ancient too.
Hey, pretty cool to see my trilogy all achievements run (as I called it at the time) featured. I need to redo that run since ep2 had a new chievo added last year or so. I might have to do some more serious planning for a route beforehand.
@@thedigs8563 Valve added another achievement about Gnome Chompski to Half Life 2 Ep 2 because Gabe had a replica Gnome Chompski put on a New Zealand rocket that was actually successfully sent into space.
thanks for linking everything in the description. i had no idea about some of these categories so having the direct links to the runs shown is really appreciated. gonna be watching some of these for sure!
The last required non-movement input for ep2 is +use on a button this button is only enabled when the relevant npc scripts are completed, the condition for these scripts to start is enabled by map logic that tracks the destruction of striders.
I never noticed how rare it is for half life to demand killing enemies. In fact, every time it does are my least favorite parts of the game. Except for episode 2 fights, all of those are amazing somehow lol
Tecnichally, You aren't directly harming the striders at the fight near the end of episode 2 since it's more like you're blowing up an explosive next to them,
It's slightly difficult, but if you aim the Magnussons properly and kill the hunters using rockets it's easy. What truly is annoyingly difficult is the achievement that requires that the striders destroy no buildings...
Not for me, but I can see why one would hate it, mainly because of its high difficulty, and some aspects of it remain difficult even on Easy. But I think it's a perfect finale for the game, before throwing a huge French key in the Combine's machinery. I found it obnoxious only if going for the outposts achievement, since that one requires the Sawmill et al to survive the assault, which essentially forces the player to play as fast and careful as possible, making them very prone to making mistakes due to the added stress.
"real time" in speedruns just means the time with loading screens. the regular run time has a ~20 minute difference between real time and in game time (without loads) because of save-related bugs
13:37 damn, last year i played the game while trying to kill as few enemies as possible without glitches and managed to get my kill count as low as 6 (and i could probably have avoided 2 of those in retrospect) i didnt even think about trying it as a speedrun
"glitches are not part of the game" what are they a part of then? glitches come from the game's rules being followed exactly. If you can only see it as cheating, then you must have a perfect knowledge of what is intended behavior by game developers. Some things that look like glitches are actually hard-coded and intended by the developers to prevent bugs, like NPC's teleporting if you block their way with props.
It’s actually pretty easy to softlock in half life by grenade jumping to a point you can’t get down from, whether that be because of fall damage or because you literally can’t get out of a pit you end up in. Oh, also you can just quicksave right before you die, or maybe after you die idk

yea, that doesnt change the fact this video sounds more like an uncreative creepy pasta than a half life vider

Well... It could also be that people played through the game before the achievements even existed.
lol true, i totally blanked out on the fact they were added later

another possibility is that they played is offline.

Pretty cool run, considering watching it in future for something to put in the background!
what was the achievement?
Good luck my man , good luck and hope you're successful

"Is that everything?" "No!" Heh.
I love the idea of the backwards speedrun, "Man stuck in the middle of a singularity event has to go through a war torn wasteland to catch a train"
aka half life 2 episode 1
Fun Fact: A lot of the lambda caches were not added until the orange box release, when achievements were added to hl2 and ep1.
Alright so I wasn't as blind in my first run as I thought when I had to go back through years later for the achievement...

Other games have already shown that "mandatory" kills might not be that mandatory if people search hard enough.
There's no way to progress in ep2 without killing all of the striders in the strider fight. believe me we have tried
