Let’s be honest. The person buying the Platinum Tremor isn’t actually using it for a work truck. It might tow a camper or a boat now and then. But the guy buying the XL is probably going to have a toolbox or fuel tank in the bed and a plow on the front, or be pulling an equipment trailer. And that guy will still be $35k less into his rig.
Coming from someone who only drives work trucks… it’s a little pathetic how shocked they are about the lack of features. That work truck would be so much for useful and wouldn’t worry about getting it dirty.
All terrain tires, bed liner, upgraded exhaust, and maybe running boards on the xl and it would be perfect. I look at that diesel engine and there's no way I could work on that.
If you really need a truck for real work, the XL or STX with gas V8 is the way to go. I agree the money saved would be better used to buy another loaded vehicle that is smaller and more efficient.

Not sure who the greenhorn is, but a bit more impromptu fact checking from Andre was needed here imo. 1) 3500 lbs isn’t a ton, it’s close to two tons 2) The 700 lbs payload difference isn’t a “couple hundred” 3) Optioning out a 7.3 over a 6.8 doesn’t put you anywhere near diesel territory for cost.
1) Didn't say it was a ton, as in one ton. He said it was a ton, as in a lot. Basic grade school English that's pretty easy to understand. 2) "definitely a couple hundred pounds" - This is called verbal irony, or sarcasm. It can be considered more advanced than basic grade school English, or a child's definition of "a ton", but it's still pretty easy to understand. 3) On the XL, It's a 3k (5%) difference. 24 F250 XL with 7.3 - $60k 24 F250 XL with 6.8 - $63k That puts the 7.3 all up in the 6.8's territory for cost. TFL always forgets to mention that Ford and GM offer a much safer 3 point seatbelt with their middle bench seat vs Ram which still uses a manual tightened lap belt and non locking seat back. That isn't a safe design considering there is no airbag for that passenger.
How many guys purchasing truck care? I’d argue very few. Even if the purchaser does care, how much do they care? Is it enough to be a deciding factor on which truck they pick? I seriously doubt it.
Well I guess enough people care that Ford and GM took the time and money to upgrade the seat. If no one cares as you say, they would have left it alone.
@@fasttoyo maybe they thought govt regulations were coming and it wasn’t based on demand, or it was parts bin related. What percentage of people even use the middle seat to begin with? I’d argue only a small minority, particularly with most trucks sold today being crew cabs.
Even with the demand being very low, there are still people that use that seat. So even if it saves one life, it's worth the money GM and Ford invested in putting them in. So my point still stands, even if you don't agree with it.
I would absolutely opt for vinyl floors in every truck; you can always toss a rug on the vinyl, but all weather mats never completely protect carpet floors.
The most underrated part of my dad’s 250 is the amount of cup holders! Even if it’s just two of us on a road trip having 6 cup holders easily accessible from the front seat is huge. Love that feature
$10,000-$12000 over the price of a gasser plus def plus higher maintenance costs? $10,000 buys A LOT of gasoline (which is often much cheaper than diesel in my area). I think this notion that going diesel if you tow regularly is going to save you money has been a moot point for a while. I think you'd have to be towing a very heavy load all day, every day for ~100,000 miles before you start to see a benefit. Very few people do that. You're buying the diesel because it gives you power, not to save money (and there is nothing wrong with that)
I think breakeven is like 20k+ miles. Agreed though, towing heavy all the time, for sure diesel; everything else, gasser all the way unless you got cash to burn.
@@microbiologycory10 Yeah, the more I run the numbers of different scenarios of fuel prices vs expect mpg, it never seems to make financial sense below ~100k miles unless diesel is below about .50/gallon more
Diesel was cheaper here in Canada in spring and summer. It fluctuates. Now it's 20 cents more per litre than regular gas. Still even if you tow a few days/week at the end the difference in gas money is not much really. DEF is like once a month or more unless you tow heavy daily. Also you're forgetting that the diesel model will hold its value much better than the gas option. Funny how people forget that cause the difference usually is around 10K between used diesel and gas models from what I've seen around me. I own both for my business. One for the heavy/med. towing and gas for maintenance work (barely sees a trailer).
50,000 price difference. That is insane. I’d take the 6.8 all day. It will do the job of the 6.7ho all day just slower. Maintenance is cheaper, engine parts are cheaper, all the hard parts other than the engine are the same. Overload springs are cheap and very easy to install if needed. 90% of the folks driving HD trucks don’t need them anyway.
It's crazy that Ford is adding the 120v rear seat AC power outlet at a full 20A rating - that basically means you can run 2400watts off it - that's nuts for a vehicle interior power outlet rating!
Re: headlights. My truck has halogen headlights. My wife's SUV has LED headlights. I prefer the halogens. The halogen lights give off enough light and they eventually fade out the farther out in front. So there's a more gradual difference between the lighted area and darkness. OTOH, the LEDs have a sharp cutoff between the lighted area and darkness. Not to mention blinding all of the oncoming traffic.
I love both trucks! BUT I would have to go with the XL,no way i could afford the $102,000, plus tax, plus insurance is skyrocketing now. You would have to work 30 years to pay for the truck, unless you worked for Ford.

While the platinum super duty is a really nice truck with a lot of features, I would go for the XL with a couple of added options. I would go with a color other than white, add some running boards just because the step up into the cap is so high and probably go with a slightly upgraded interior. And I would pop in a Chrome grill insert. I would like the 7.3 Godzilla motor, but I am not going to pay a bunch more money for it. And I would probably go for a regular cab long box. Because pickup stuff. Too bad you cannot get a regular cab short box in the heavy duty with locking front and rear axles to go with the 4x4. Then you would have an awesome, stout off road pickup with great clearance and maneuverability.
Yep. There are aftermarket 360 degree cameras out there that you can add to any head unit. That and a set of Morimoto LED headlamp assemblies and you've upgraded that XL to a much nicer truck with enough money left over for a side x side and a toy hauler.
Avg salary is around $62k year. Paying rent and more than a mortgage payment on truck, with probably >$30k in CC debt. But hey they look cool 😎 living the lifestyle. One day I can only dream.
500HP in a pickup truck is just a fashion accessory. I'll take the work truck with a gas engine, but will wait a couple of years and get a used one. I'm not even sure I would get the 7.3. The 6.8 has plenty of power.
You talked about putting a beefier tire on that, but I would like to see you test the fuel mileage of the stock tires compared to a larger tire with a more rugged tread to see actual numbers.

Great review and very informative, but these two trucks remind me why I dislike modern trucks so much. If it's got heat, 4wd, and a tow hitch, that's all I need. I had a fully loaded out tahoe and after a few years only 2 out of the 5 windows opened (the front passenger door and the sunroof)the auto door locks didn't work. had to have the remote start dissabled cause it would start randomly and it was just cheaper to have it disabled than it was to fix it among other things. My moddo is all this gimmicky tech stuff is great, but when it breaks, it's a living nightmare.
Yeah I would take the Gas Engine. I would add a aftermarket stereo, rims and tires and remote start with bed liner and have a pretty sweet truck for around $62,000. Gas is cheaper, maintenance is cheaper and it can still haul a lot.
Throw a turbo or supercharger on the gasser, upgrade the wheels and seats and one probably would have fast as hell and really nice rig for another $10k. A lot of your average buyers will likely keep their trucks for 15 plus years. I don’t like knowing all the electronics such as the digital dash will likely go out.
XL for sure. I would never buy a new diesel truck. If that xl was up for $40K I would actually consider purchasing it but not at over $50K for a work truck.

I have the white 2023 F150 version of the base F250 and it's awesome! Keyed ignition, basic electronics, small screen and who cares if my dog sits in the front seat? No one. I did change out the tires to Toyo Open Country ATs. It's my work truck and I bought it to abuse it. Way easier to abuse this than the F350 Lariat I had previously. Considered the F250, but the gas mileage is way better with the 3.5EB that can tow nearly as much. Dog loves it, wife is not a fan.
Andrea the diesel is more efficient as yourself and Nathan proved, but it really isn't cheaper with the cost difference between gas & diesel, not counting the DEF fluid.
I'm just glad I got mine before the auto industry lost their minds on price. My 2019 XLT premium 6.7 new was 48 grand. The same truck is around 80 now. I don't know at 47 I'll buy another truck. I've still got less than 50 thousand miles on mine. Before I traded every 3-4 years. I feel they have shot their self in the foot. They are going back to where only rich people can afford vehicles.
As someone who had the black capri leather seats (non-perforated) in a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4, I’m not even a sweaty person, but in summer, the pool of sweat and burning the back of my legs was miserable enough where I sat on a towel when temps were above 65 degrees 😅 I’d much rather have cloth seats in the XL. The vinyl looks like cheap seat covers
The lack of cameras isn't anything to worry about..I have a '12 F250 with no cameras and can hook up trailers old school without issue. Just wish we could go back to basics.
Personally I don't think efficiency for the diesel should be a talking point... when diesel was priced at or lower than gas it made sense in the discussion; and its been a few years since that was the case. Now, it is almost (nationally) somewhere between 20% to 40% more expensive than gas. So, at best, you may break even on fuel cost which means you have to eat the extra cost of the diesel engine option, DEF, and extra maintenance. A case could be made for power, resale value, longevity, transmission, etc. But efficiency only really matters as it applies to cost and its a wash right now if not worse for the diesel option (with exceptions for lots of towing/hauling). The more frustrating thing is watching review after review trying to justify the enormous cost of even a basic work truck... just a few years ago, that same standard work truck was in the high 30s and you could expect to find deals with significant price reductions on nearly everything but things like the Raptor. It's ridiculous that there are now $100K+ options... the Big 3 are either going to have to get used to the new reality of less production for higher cost trucks, or they'll need to start putting some big discounts and pause pumping up MSRPs on these vehicles. Slowing sales and increasing defaults from buyers with even stellar credit is not a good sign for them.
The work truck is SOOO much more my speed. I don't need all the electronic junk like remote start, push button, power seats, camera mirror, power tailgate, etc. I like my vehicle to just FUNCTION, and not have a bunch of unnecessary expensive stuff. And it still has those aux switches, which are a nice feature.
Andrey...all the things you want to do to the XL work truck can easily be done aftermarket. Not that you suggested it, but you surely don't need to add factory option packages, or buy a higher trim level to get done what you want with this truck.
If we were playing the drinking game with the word diesel we'd all be dead with alcohol poisoning. Probably 95% of people that own a truck and have a diesel don't need a diesel get over it.
I have the 6 7 and drive 30k-40k miles per year. Absolutely love the diesel. Incredible engine. Super efficient Going on the hwy I see the same 18-21mpg. Incredible for the F350 limited When driving pure hwy, almost 600 miles to 1 tank
You don't have to go Platinum to get LED lights. IMO, the XLT with some options is the sweet spot price/capability wise. Balance fuel savings on diesel with the added cost of diesel versus regular gas. In my area, diesel is an extra $1/gallon, which is 33% more.
If that were the choice, it would definitely be a step up from the XL. I could live with it for sure. But i shopped for 7 months, looking for a v8, 6.5' bed, heated seating and stering, with adaptive cruise. Everything i found new was over $68k. Even used in an F250, the price was stupid. I'll settle for what i found, a 2020 F150 Lariat 5.0 with under 13k for $44 OTD. As long as it holds up for the next 5 years, im 😊 happy. I just didn't want the $1100 payment.
Big plus is plan old analog tailgate! Just rebuilt & repaired wiring for my 2008 truck tailgate. 😮 Also, rear leather seats were put together poorly. I just replaced my driver side leather & is perfect.
The B&O system was the first thing to get changed out of my explorer. If I had taken more time to listen toe the radio while driving the car instead of letting the sales guy ramble on about the features then I could have saved myself about 5k on a trim level change
Get the XLT with ordered radio upgrade, 6.7 regular setup, still save 35k and have all the capacity of the 6.7 engine. The reason it's a 10k upgrade is because you need the other transmission to go with it.
Good thing FORD has a option of four engines to choose from since these bodies are aluminum and the vehicle is fuel efficient and can haul/tow excessive amount of weight. GM (big fan of) can learn a learn a thing or "two" maybe more from ford about engine options.
Agreed, and I have the GMC. I bought the Duramax, but would have liked a gas big block with the Allison transmission option. Bring back the 8.1L , and it would sell like hotcakes...
@@richfarfugnuven6308the 6.6 gas seems like a solid engine but it's absolutely in the :"just barely good enough" category, which is not what people find acceptable for these prices.
For $50k you could buy an older 3500 dually frame/chassis, a brand new or refurb drivetrain of your choice without the need for DEF and add whatever seating/accessories you want.
The LED lights are great for the driver but are a nightmare for oncoming traffic, they are way too bright and blinding especially at the elevation of a truck.
I'm happy to see you guys talking about the GVWR on these trucks as well. Looks like you have an F250 and an F350 with the wrong badges. The whole point of 250/2500 trucks is the 10,000 pound GVWR for registration purposes. I hope you show more of this because it's very misleading to consumers. They will buy the 250/2500 diesel and register it at 10,000 pounds, and think they still have the full (in this case) 2800 pound payload capacity. That is until the DOT weighs them and slaps them with a fine for being over weight (based on registration) even though they're within the manufacturers ratings
$50k is a lot of scratch for some bling and a diesel. The camera differences are big to me as well. I went from an Escalade with several cameras to a Silverado LTZ 1500 with good cameras but mine does not have the overhead view. I miss that. I don't need an HD or a diesel to tow my 7,000 lb. travel trailer, but they are cool.
Believe it or not some of us like the less is more. I don't want to be working for my truck first of all. And the helper thing on the tailgate is slow I can do it myself better faster easier. I have work Arms and Legs to go with so no problem. The Platinum is luxury hauler not for work so the tailgate thing is ok I guess. Nice ride for hauling an Airstream if you got that kind of cake. Style wise I always prefer plain jane vehicles for some reason. I don't know why that is.
It’s also also good at loosing you money from being in the shop for weeks on end because the emissions crap breaks. Give me a 7.3 PowerStroke, 24v 5.9 Cummins (with mechanical fuel pump conversion), LBZ or LML Duramax any day of the week over any new diesel, be it Ford, Gm or Ram.

I think TFL should do a comparison video of the cheapest 6.7 Turbo Diesel and the most expensive. That would be a more apples to apples comparison.
Yes! Also the middle. For instance my 6.7 is a 22 Lariat with plenty of options. Came out to 77k

That's a REALLY good point! And I'm a diesel fan, but, man... it's hard to argue that $50,000 price spread.
Personally, I'd go diesel and run that thing until the wheels fell off. Hopefully it would be good to me for at least 10 years, preferably 15 to 20 years, for that price point.

Not sure who the greenhorn is, but a bit more impromptu fact checking from Andre was needed here imo.
1) 3500 lbs isn’t a ton, it’s close to two tons
2) The 700 lbs payload difference isn’t a “couple hundred”
3) Optioning out a 7.3 over a 6.8 doesn’t put you anywhere near diesel territory for cost.
24 F250 XL with 7.3 - $60k
24 F250 XL with 6.8 - $63k
That puts the 7.3 all up in the 6.8's territory for cost. I know Math is usually considered harder than English, but come on...at least try.
@@aaronw8606he compared the 7.3 to the diesel not the 6.8. Learn to read before making an attempt to sound smart. And no. It wasn’t sarcasm.
@@jabroni6199 The 6.8 was the "standard" engine on the configurator and I mistyped that instead of 6.7 in my response, that's my bad. But, it's whatever, the prices I showed are still between the 7.3 and the diesel and my point still stands.
I got my 2023 xl f350 saw crew cab diesel 4x4 on Black Friday for $59800. It’s step down for me but honestly I love it because it’s literally now only for work where before I was working/daily driving with my prior 2016. It has more features than I ever thought at that trim level.
@@Joe-hz1nwgood thing the manufacturer cares more than you do, I guess...
I love the simplicity of my 2013 Sequoia SR5. I previously had the highest trim INFINITI, and really didn't need or use the comfort features.
Gas in central Texas is $2.25/gal, diesel is close to $4….oil changes are 2x$ and def is $4/gal. It never breaks even!
@@microbiologycory10 Yeah, the more I run the numbers of different scenarios of fuel prices vs expect mpg, it never seems to make financial sense below ~100k miles unless diesel is below about .50/gallon more
@@microbiologycory10Diesel in Lubbock TX is 3.19. Even less at Costco plus 4% cash back.
I’d like to know why anybody would pay 2 times the price over a base model and end up with one truck!
Hi Rollin 🤷🏿♂️
Maybe because some people have a lot of money and want luxury features? Do you have a brain?

I would go with a lariat. Platinum is too much for me. The XL feels like a school bus inside.
XLT would suffice for me also.

Man that 6.8 sounds SO good!
As someone who has never been in a vehicle newer than 2002 and never owned an automatic transmission the XL is a Cadillac and the platinum truck is just insane and has too many electronics. Take me back to the days of the 2 Valve 5.4 Triton and 7.3 Powerstroke
7.3 Powerstroke, okay, 5.4 Triton, I'd avoid. Especially since you can't easily tell the 2 valve from the 3 valve and so on.
@@damilolaakanni All 5.4’s before 2004 were 2 valve. Some of the most reliable farm trucks we have. One has 260k and the other has 295k. I bought a 2000 7.3 brand new with 4 miles on it and it has 612k. Just bought all the stuff to overhaul it this winter. Routine and thorough maintenance is key.
For 100k I could have the XL a new SXS and a small toy hauler
Facts!
I bought a 22 F350 CCLB 6.7 4x4 STX and paid $56700 after a $2500 rebate. A 2023 identically optioned is $71k!! Ford really screwed up the STX by adding led lights and a bunch of un-needed options and raising the price like crazy
What do you get for an extra $50K. You get the chorizo. ❤ TFL.
XL for sure. No one needs all that crap on the fancy model.
You can easily upgrade stereo and add cameras.
aftermarket is always better also
Yep. There are aftermarket 360 degree cameras out there that you can add to any head unit. That and a set of Morimoto LED headlamp assemblies and you've upgraded that XL to a much nicer truck with enough money left over for a side x side and a toy hauler.

@@guyod1 That's the point. You trying to tell me the technology in this truck is worth $50,000? The engines not that much different. The transmission is not that much different.

I bought my F250 super duty for 53,000 . Its almost the same truck but with a service bed a lumber rack and running boards and my self along with the guys on my construction crew love it.
Don't buy chevy. Had electrical nightmares on our 2015 ltz suburban. My 2018 f150 xlt with luxury options doesn't have any issues.
You can buy 2 work trucks for one Platinum.
Yeah I would take the Gas Engine. I would add a aftermarket stereo, rims and tires and remote start with bed liner and have a pretty sweet truck for around $62,000. Gas is cheaper, maintenance is cheaper and it can still haul a lot.
Remote start with the app is standard on all fords now
Throw a turbo or supercharger on the gasser, upgrade the wheels and seats and one probably would have fast as hell and really nice rig for another $10k. A lot of your average buyers will likely keep their trucks for 15 plus years. I don’t like knowing all the electronics such as the digital dash will likely go out.
I have an o4 dodge 2500 w/5.9 Cummins and that work truck looks like luxury compared to mine!😂

Get the XL. Add upgrades and accessories at your own pace.
Andrea the diesel is more efficient as yourself and Nathan proved, but it really isn't cheaper with the cost difference between gas & diesel, not counting the DEF fluid.
Ya the efficiency doesn't help a diesel case anymore so not really worth mentioning lol
I’m not sure how anyone can watch this video and be convinced to spend 50k more
The work truck is SOOO much more my speed.
LEDs: definitely safer for the people blinded by them.
If we were playing the drinking game with the word diesel we'd all be dead with alcohol poisoning. Probably 95% of people that own a truck and have a diesel don't need a diesel get over it.
Got to get to the board room somehow…
I have the 6 7 and drive 30k-40k miles per year.
Absolutely love the diesel. Incredible engine.
Super efficient
Going on the hwy I see the same 18-21mpg. Incredible for the F350 limited
When driving pure hwy, almost 600 miles to 1 tank
I actually last week bought for $54,000 a 2018 F350 King Ranch Diesel, crew cab long bed. It only has about 90k miles and to save 50k its so worth it.
Nobody can afford new vehicles anymore! These prices are getting seriously ridiculous!
Ridiculous pricing. My GT350 was just a smidge more than the bare bones F-250. Crazy.
I would prefer cloth seats in the work truck instead of the vinyl, it would be better in the winter as well
You have to cover cloth seats if you don’t want to ruin them, vinyl cleans easy
The B&O system was the first thing to get changed out of my explorer. If I had taken more time to listen toe the radio while driving the car instead of letting the sales guy ramble on about the features then I could have saved myself about 5k on a trim level change
Get the XLT with ordered radio upgrade, 6.7 regular setup, still save 35k and have all the capacity of the 6.7 engine. The reason it's a 10k upgrade is because you need the other transmission to go with it.
Diesel is more efficient but diesel cost more per gallon.
Yeah, like 20% more efficient (only when towing) and 40% more expensive (plus DEF). At least here in TX…it NEVER. BREAKS. EVEN!
I wish I could like this comment a hundred times!
I bought an xl nicely equipped for the first time, put the money where it counted for me and my needs we will see resale value when the time comes.
