I did almost 60% of the settings possible into my androind phone. Never knew these settings on my phone camera before. Thank you so much. Every second of the video is worth watching.
I have never taken a filmmaking class or done anything with photography or filming. I feel more than confident to go film and balance photos now, but even more so, I feel like I could explain and teach someone else. Excellent content, thank you!
I have adhd and normally 20 minutes would be too much for my brain but the way you formatted this video brought my attention back every time it tried to drift. I also really liked the timer at the bottom of the screen. Very helpful information!
This was INCREDIBLE. Thanks for explaining the important features (shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and frame rate). You made it make complete sense to the unprofessional photographers. I feel more aware now with these few features alone.
Just watched your "20 minute smart phone" video and I say to who'll ever see this, this is rhe most informative video for shooting video with your phone I have ever seen. I cannot praise this video enough. The only negative is a lot of the amateurish mistakes talked about I have been guilty of. BUT that was before I saw this video. I just cannot thank you enough for educating me and everybody else. One of the things I'm downright ashamed of is in the past I would keep all my settings on auto to do video. I will tell everyone I know about this video. It is truly appreciated
Thanks for sharing all these tips. As a working actor and as a film school grad I always recognized the potential of my phone’s camera but never really used it for anything other than the usual quick short social situations. This has really sparked my interest in starting to utilize my phone in more of a filmmaking craft.
One thing about white balance to all new filmmakers. He explains it very well but keep in mind that just because you set the "right" white balance it doesn't mean it is the best white balance for your shot. It depends on what you want to tell! The girl on the rooftop when he says it looks "a thousand times better" - that's just not true. It looks more neutral, yes! but when you want a warmer, more sunny feeling and look feel free to change that white balance to a warmer setting. Same thing when you want to shoot day for night - meaning you want to shoot a night scene but there is not enough light so you want to shoot during the day and just want that night mood - feel free to get your white balance a bit colder so you sell the idea in your mind.
I just purchase this APP last night and OMG its amazing! I'm actor and I've struggle to make my auditions looks the best. This App took it to a new level Thank you so much for this amazing video. the 9.99 is so worth it.
Probably no one will read this, but if you are going to put your video on UA-cam, it wants 30 FPS, not 24 FPS. If you upload 24 FPS video, it will auto-convert to 30 FPS, resulting in poorer quality. Also, TVs will do the same. Unfortunately, most stock footage is shot at 24 FPS also. I don't know when people are going to stop using the 24 FPS format, as it's really outdated.
Is 30 or 60 better at 1080p for long form talking heads content? Using obs to manage everything so just curious if you have any insight on that choice.
Thanks for the info as I did some video recording at 24fps and it looks really odd, jolty (IPhone 14 Plus) and unnatural. So switching back to 30fps 🤷♀️
@@defendingalionI usually do 30 frames long form because it’s easier to do motion graphics with half the frames, plus lower file sizes, and people don’t need good internet to watch it
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 📱 This video aims to teach mobile filmmaking in 20 minutes, suitable for UA-cam creators, social media influencers, travelers, hobbyists, and those looking to start a film business using their smartphones. 01:24 📽️ Smartphone filmmaking has gained popularity, with examples of successful movies shot on iPhones, emphasizing the importance of knowing how to control your phone's camera settings. 02:17 📷 Avoid using your phone's native camera app for filming; instead, use dedicated third-party camera apps like Filmic Pro, DJI Beast cam, or Moment Pro Camera app for better control over settings. 03:56 ⚙️ To achieve the correct exposure on your smartphone, focus on frame rate, ISO, shutter speed, and white balance settings, making sure to match them appropriately for the situation. 05:33 🎥 The recommended frame rate for a cinematic look is 24 frames per second, while higher frame rates like 60-120 fps are suitable for achieving smooth slow-motion effects. 07:08 🌆 ISO controls the exposure but can introduce noise and grain, so it's best to keep it as low as possible (ideally below 800). 09:01 ⏲️ Shutter speed affects both exposure and motion blur; doubling the frame rate for shutter speed generally creates natural-looking motion blur. 11:20 🎨 White balance ensures accurate colors in your footage; set it manually to match the lighting conditions, avoiding the "orange" or "blue" tint that can result from auto settings. 15:02 😎 An ND filter acts as "sunglasses" for your camera, allowing you to control exposure without adjusting ISO or shutter speed in bright conditions. 18:45 📸 Improve smartphone footage by shooting in 4K, adjusting bit rate settings, turning off the internal stabilizer (rely on external gimbals), and using a flat picture profile for better post-processing flexibility. 20:09 📷 Focus on using the main lens of your smartphone for the highest quality footage, as phone manufacturers prioritize this lens over others. 20:38 📷 Use the highest quality lens on your smartphone, typically the standard lens around 26mm, for the best results. Avoid using the ultra-wide lens for critical shots. 21:05 📸 Third-party lenses, like those from Moment, can significantly improve the quality of smartphone footage by providing different focal lengths while utilizing the phone's standard lens. 22:01 🔄 Use a gimbal for smooth camera movements to avoid shaky and amateur-looking footage when shooting with a smartphone. 23:08 🚫 Understand your smartphone's limitations and avoid shooting in situations where it performs poorly, such as low-light conditions or scenes with blown-out highlights. 25:13 💻 Explore more in-depth mobile filmmaking courses and filmmaking skills in general through resources like Tomorrow's Filmmakers, an online film academy with a wide range of training videos. This is the best video-making tutorial on UA-cam. Hands down. You've made a fan here man. And I'm a professional TV producer who's been in the industry for 19 years. I usually laugh at most tutorials with such titles, but this was a really good one. Keep it up!
Honest and to the point... a sales pitch should be like this while at the same time delivery value in content for those who watch... Those who can afford can buy confidently.
I've tried a few camera apps and set all these things manually and I find auto mode is still the best option in normal situations. Modern phones are so smart these days and there is no need to use manual settings until you want to get specific result like bluration or something like this. The only thing you really need to set manually is frame rate which is necesary in post production for the slow motion. Auto mode has also one more adventage. Imagine that you record a video being outside and you go inside. Would you stop recording before the door to change white balance? Auto mode do this job for you fluently but if you want to keep specific settings in "auto" you can simply lock exposure. So I think in 90 percent of cases using manual mode is needless.
Thank you!!! I’ve been wanting to become a UA-camr for over a year and a half but perfectionism and self-doubt has held me back as well as thinking I need to have all the right equipment, when I already do. I have studio lights and experience making movies for OF. Properly set up your phone exposure. I hope you have a video on making the first UA-cam video.
Hey Ryan! I need your expertise here😊 What do you think would be the best ADD-ON LENS for IPhone, to Film a Head Talking Video with Cinematic Mood? I don’t like the video shoot right on the face… a little bit far, with some depth feeling with a little blurry in the background Thanks a lot! I happen to search how to master the camera app on an iPhone and this came up on the search. Now how you explained the variety of features makes me more interested in filming. I’m hoping to come back to this video for future interests.
It actually depends on what timeline you’re editing to slowdown a 60fps video, you’ll need to divide the the frames of the timeline. 24/60 =.40 or 40% 30/60 =.50 or 50%
Shouldn't you use same multiplier in FPS? Like if using 24fps, use 144fps in slowmo (x1, x6) or if using 30fps use 60 / 120 fps (x1, x2, x4) in slow mo? That's a tip I've heard before.
I'm excited to share this journey with my wife, who's keen on shooting more content but feels overwhelmed by where to start. With my background in commercial video and photo work, I've tried to help, but it often goes in one ear and out the other. I believe this video will be a great resource for her. To make it more fun and collaborative, I've proposed a challenge for us to learn together. I have a ton of equipment that I only use occasionally, and it would be a dream come true if she took an interest in using it, even if it means a few things get broken in the process. Thank you for creating such helpful content!
THIS is what I need! 1000 thank yous, this has helped me a lot!! I never knew what those letters in my camera settings meant, but now I feel like I’m a professional. I learned so much with your videos, it’s insane🤩
Perfect!! The Master your camera video was already so detailed and helpful now the master your mobile phone camera one is even better! Thank you for making such detailed tutorials for us. Lots of content creators are creating videos using smartphones only and this video is the tutorial we need!
Good vid. Just want to offer some context regarding ISO. The ISO number or ISO rating comes from the days of physical film and the ISO rating would tell you the film stock’s sensitivity to light, which affected exposure and film grain which is the equivalent to noise in the digital world. The difference being that analog noise (film grain) had a certain attractiveness to it and is sometimes emulated in the digital realm.
Haha I’ve got the same iPhone. Could’ve used this two weeks ago but your “Master Your Camera” video worked just as well. Just want to add that the Cinema P3 Pro app allows you to use a grey card for white balancing 👍
Hi Jaqui! What would be the best ADD-ON LENS for IPhone, to Film a Head Talking Video with Cinematic Mood? That provides a little bit of dept in the scene (I don’t like the video shoot right on the face… a little bit far but with a little blurry in the background) Thanks a lot! Pd: I am not a YT but I am giving 1:1 OnLine Spanish Classes, so I am trying to record some classes in form of mini courses instead. Your expertise will be more than welcome!
I am BEYOND THANKFUL for this video, just removed a £2500 camera from my basket and replaced it with a much cheaper alternative with interchangeable lens to suit my needs ! Thank you so, so much ! ❤ subscribed !! ❤❤
One last note I'll add: to maximize your ability to edit after shooting, capture in RAW to the extent that you can. Even after setting frame rate, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance, your camera is making decisions behind your back about how to turn what it sees into a color image. The details of this probably require at least one video of their own, but by shooting in RAW you get the power (and responsibility) to make those decisions for yourself.
Thank you so much for this video! I am gearing up to shoot my first film. Not a short film, but a feature film! I know, I know, dumb AF but, lol, Imma do it. It's basically a backstory film for our haunted attraction. We have an imdb page going up, we got at least 1 major actor in the industry signed on and working on a second one. So thanks again for this! Is such a big help.
IOS 17 on iPhone has a new feature called lock white balance which locks the white balance once you start recording so it isn’t shifting throughout the recording. Still not as good as a manual app but still a great feature
What a great explanation. I am zero in camera settings, but now I can understand behind the settings. Your way or explanation is easy to understand. Thanks for the clarification
I cannot even say how much I like the video. I'm starting to make videos with mostly my action camera, but I might add some high-end phone footage later on to the mix as well. And holy crap this is helpful - it's amazing how you provide essential examples that are easy to grasp. Thank you!
Taking a guess on the ISO name: Back when actual film was used, my guess is the ISO standards organization established technical specifications for the film's reactivity given a certain amount of light So 600 ISO film and 800 ISO film would be different, but the same ISO from different manufacturers could be mostly the same
I find the automatic settings on iPhone generally produce excellent results. The post production editing facilities are so good that it is better to set the phone up once in Settings, then stick with one's preference. Point and shoot, concentrating on framing and the subject, Unless you want a silhouette effect, keep the sun or light source to the side or behind you. Do not turn off the stabilisation on an iPhone unless you are using a gimbal. It is far easier to carry just an iPhone without all of that bulk. The editing in iPhone is excellent and LR (Light Room) offers additional features, like flare reduction. Use the KISS principle. Keep It Simple Stupid. I used to teach photography. This video is about professional photography techniques where absolute photographic perfection is demanded. Not many achieve that, but millions of great photos and videos are taken because people point and shoot to catch the moment.
This is about video, not photography. Automatic settings vs manual settings is the difference between content creators making nice videos vs actual filmmaking.
Love your video. I just like to say that while Filmic pro is really good the two best in my opinion are Mc24fpspro and Motion Cam Pro which can shoot Raw and HDR10 plus so much more there is a price but it is so worth it
I never have been able to hold my attention or get anything substantial from these types of videos but WOW this one is amazing!! The detail, the simple explanations, heck I didn’t even know there were outside apps you could to get better video on your phone! I’m in awe of how great this is!
Highly informative ! Does the Action Mode feature on iPhone 15 ProMax remove the need to buy a gimbal for steady video ? Also in regard to “blown out highlights” and dynamic range when shooting on the phone , how well does the ProRAW/ProRES feature compensate for that limitation ?
I recently upgraded my phone from a Samsung S10 to S23 Ultra. The camera quality is better and more even across the different cameras. In addition the iso performance is better. But my S10 (for rhe main camera) had dual apertures of 2.4 and 1.5. In addition when it comes to audio, the 3.5 mic jack is a lot more universal than using a dongle and better quality.
Amazing detailed video with proper examples is what stands out from the rest of the videos on youtube. Thank you so much for the real life scenario examples

Really good video, but, what about Android phones? Why does everybody assume that iPhones are much more superior than them? It couldn't be further from the truth. Also, I think it's time we stopped calling them "smartphones". How many "dumb" phones do you see out there any longer? 😆

The best video I've seen about smartphone filmmaking by a LONG shot. Watched it all!
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 📱 This video aims to teach mobile filmmaking in 20 minutes, suitable for UA-cam creators, social media influencers, travelers, hobbyists, and those looking to start a film business using their smartphones.

Your expertise will be more than welcome!
one of the most detailed video, with all aspect covered, i had hard time controlling iso and white balance, it is precise now
26 min were worth it 🙌
I am BEYOND THANKFUL for this video, just removed a £2500 camera from my basket and replaced it with a much cheaper alternative with interchangeable lens to suit my needs ! Thank you so, so much ! ❤ subscribed !! ❤❤
I have 0 interest in photography or videography yet I watched it till the end. What an amazing tutorial.
This is the best video I’ve watched on UA-cam so far 👍🏽
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
One last note I'll add: to maximize your ability to edit after shooting, capture in RAW to the extent that you can. Even after setting frame rate, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance, your camera is making decisions behind your back about how to turn what it sees into a color image. The details of this probably require at least one video of their own, but by shooting in RAW you get the power (and responsibility) to make those decisions for yourself.
thank you soooo much! but I have a question! can we record videos on the beach?
Thank you kindly! I learned sooo much and am excited to start shooting reels. Your training is well-paced, clear, and in terminology I can grasp 👍
This 14 or 15 iPhone ?
Only 5 min into watching but I am here to say this is the best video here on UA-cam for everyone beginners and master no cap
Let’s get a post production - part two
The most valuable for me is your point of knowing the limits of mobile filming and avoid it
Thank you so much for this video!
Thank You Tomorrows Filmmakers ! I have learnt so much and I'm super excited trying everything out on my phone.
Thank you!
Saw this videos many times , but never actually watched it😅kinda regret not seeing it early,
Was helpful thanku man
Taking a guess on the ISO name:
Back when actual film was used, my guess is the ISO standards organization established technical specifications for the film's reactivity given a certain amount of light
So 600 ISO film and 800 ISO film would be different, but the same ISO from different manufacturers could be mostly the same
Yep, you got it!
Thank you so much for the real life scenario examples
waow! you were't kidding about a 20 minutes tutorial. Literarily every second counts. Very well structured, easy to digest.
What's the best option for Android users app wise? Don't wanna pay for a subscription every month and the moment app isn't available on Android :(
I can recommend ProShot!
Black magic is also good
Black magic
Such a great video tutorial for the everyone to watch who has interest in videography , Nobody can give you such details in paid classes.. Everybody has mobile phones , but never used 10% features of his phone in daily life. Thanks for your great efferot
You explained Shutter Speed so well
Great video! Are you able to mention which ND filter you used?
Okay, you were amazing! I learnt it all in a single video and now just need to practice. Thank you for making this video!!
Can you share other third party free camera app ?
Blackmagic, final cut
Varlens
Best crash course I’ve ever come across. 2024 starting off great!
But why all Iphone? Android has THE! very best camera quality including the s23, the google pixel ect. So I am not understanding why you are focusing on only Iphone and totally disregarding the best phone cameras on the market. Iphone is basic AF and is using mostly old outdated LG and Samsung tech. Is there a tutorial like this for something worthy of this tutorial available, like an android version??
single handedly increased sales for pro camera by moment
Really good video, but, what about Android phones? Why does everybody assume that iPhones are much more superior than them? It couldn't be further from the truth. Also, I think it's time we stopped calling them "smartphones". How many "dumb" phones do you see out there any longer? 😆
😢
Iphone has Log, external storage direct write and the black magic app which is the dream
Wow, this is like a free course.
Anyone can start their professional photography or videography career after this.
Only I need to learn more about angles now.
Thank you so much for making something complex for the non-experts, simple 👏👏👏👏
This video is just amazing, Easy and fun to comprehend how these things work
Best video yet about my iPhone 15 PM photography!! I actually love to shoot hand held at night! Love my phone. Thanks for GREAT video!

This video is a missile!!!! I highly appreciate this. More people need to watch this video. This is probably the issue most people face with their cell phone, camera quality, regardless of iPhone or android. 💯
Thank you so much for going into such detail. I’ve bought a Moment lens and I can honestly say the quality of was incredible.
