People, as a custom home builder who started off building our home many years ago let me just reinforce the previous comments. This is an excellent series. It’s not just a video of the work being done but a thoughtful explanation of the how, what, why and when each step in process is occurring. Whether your just building a garage, an ADU or a full size home this series should be in your reference library.
Thanks Bill. This means a lot to me. One of the most thoughful comments I have recieved. It sucks up a lot of time to put each video together. Hearing from other pros that the info is quality, really makes all the extra time and energy worth it. Thanks again!
As a person who’s building their first ADU, this series is incredible. Thank you for the value you provide.
Great to hear this! Im glad that it helps you, that was the hope when we spend so much (what felt like wasted time) putting it together. 😂😂
these videos are great. Just started carpentry trade school. I like how the long format. Its like im actually there the every step of the way and able to see details. It gives me so much more confidence in being able to do it myself one day.
Glad you like them!
Great video series. I learned a lot about the ADU building process. I will utilize this information once I'm ready to start my ADU process. Thank you for all you do.
You're welcome Kevin. Thanks for the views! Sorry, just seeing this comment.
Really enjoyed seeing the good ol cut n stack roof framing. I've had my share of cut n stack, but at my age I hire framers I know.
Keep up the great progress videos. Looks amazing !
For sure! We always do the 2x12 rafter stack.
Fantastic series! Question: I'm also hoping to get separate electrical service for an ADU at my house so I don't have to upgrade the panel and meter on the main house. Is that how it works? New line directly from utility pole to the ADU and the main house elec remains as is?
Yes, that is how it can work. Each utility has its own rules though. Check with there const dept.
Thanks for the view!
I like that you are making the pocket doors. They are more functional than the typical swing doors, especially in a smaller space. However, won’t the pocket doors be hard and expensive to repair if something goes wrong in a few years?
Repairs are a pain.. but we use the HD pocket door frames, hardware and rollers. Add to that I have installed (and hated every min of) more than 200 pocket doors packs. They hold up well.
Thank you for walking us in the process
Glad to share!
Thanks a lot for putting this series together and going into all of the details. It’s the most informative documentation of a build I have found yet! I would be happy to build one for even twice your price. Lol
I wasn’t expecting you to say 200 amp service for each ADU. That seems like a lot for these small homes, right?
Thanks! Yes, 200a is overkill but the same price and no more work than 100a. This why we have room to grow. Hot tub, solar, EV chargers, etc.
Love to see it!
Weird question, but how does address for mail work for these adus? Does it all go under the main house, or do all 3 have their own mailbox / address?
Thanks as always!
All units get an address assignment. Then it goes to post master and 911 center. Always check with your local planning and zoning office though.
@@ThatADUGuy gotcha! Thanks!
Your videos are so helpful!!!!
What state are you?
I'm glad they are helpful! Love hearing this. Thanks!
Very interesting to see the similarities & differences in construction style (versus in my country). Here, the roof trusses are mostly made of metal, if the owner can afford it. Walls are made of CHB. Columns & beams are made of concrete. There are houses made of wood but they're considered as "old style", cheap or low quality & won't withstand the storms which regularly visit the country. Cheers!
Good to know! Yes, sounds like much higher quality.
@@ThatADUGuy hey there! I'm not saying that your ADUs are low quality - they're quite the opposite! It's just that out here, people prefer to build concrete houses (if they can afford it) to better withstand the strong storms/ typhoons. We get around 20 storms per year.
@@kitty_s23456 yes, i understand. Did not take it that way at all. Just sounds like more commericial type construction.
Dude those shorts went out of style in the 70's bro!!
I do the oposite of the trends.
What's old is new again, bringing back the jorts!
Thanks, Derek
You're welcome! Thanks for the view!
Great vid
I just Qualified for my first Heloc. When the time comes, would you be willing to sell me a set of drawings with a dwelling that features a loft?
Does inspector there require plywood edge joint clips between rafters ?
No huricane clips required on stick framed roofs, yes if they were trusses.
Curios to know the size of this ADU I think you said 800 sq ft? How much will this cost all in? Thank you I enjoy your content very much! I just inherited a property here in Ca and want to do this … thanks
Front unit is 810sf. We are shooting for $81k. This is cost with me doing most of the work, and hiring out to friends.
Very cost effective, hard work pays off.
@@JCC56 thanks! Yes, a lot of work for sure!
How much was the Lumber for this Project?
still waiting for the last bill from the lumber yard. Prob around 12k for back and 15k for front unit.
@@ThatADUGuy Thank You!
