My grandpa planted too many tomato plants this year. He asked if I wanted them because he was just going to toss the extras. I said yes because I can save the seeds from plants I got for free that were started by my grandpa. That’s a win win in my book.

Talking to a clerk at the feed store, she told me they are selling GMO seed without 😅alerting customers what they are unless asked. She said this was the first year they are being sold to customers.

I feel your exhaustion. I'm also doing it on my own for my entire family. It's tough, but you're doing it. Every day that you're out there making progress is a GOOD day, even if you don't get everything done. You're still ahead of where you were yesterday right? One step forward at a time. That's what I tell myself otherwise it's too overwhelming. I make daily lists as well. I don't always get everything done on the list, but that's just how things go. Stuff comes up that takes priority. That's homesteading and it's OK. We are strong, capable, amazingly self sufficient women living life as the Creator intended. It's not easy, but it's beautiful ❤

I saved carrot seed last year, and they outperformed the seeds I bought- BY FAR!
The longer you grow them the more accustomed and climatised to your individual area they become.
So here’s a thought, save your seed packages and put your saved seeds in those purchased seed packages. Should the Gestapo show up and claim that your growing their products just show them to see package and say I just bought these…
Love the idea of an organized homestead series.
I don't think that will work. On my prepackaged packets, they all say packed for year such and such. When I buy from a local seed store, seed is weighed and put in either orangey/yellow packets or clear packets, no date. I save my empty packets to remind me to either buy more or save that variety
Some seed companies are also specifically saying the seeds they sell can only be planted in the year they were sold. No saving their seeds to use the next season. If you look, a lot of seed companies are changing the names of old time plants a little bit to say they now own them forever.
My neighbor gave me Tommy Toes 5 years ago. It's to the point after years of seed saving that I'm now giving them their tomato plants for the year.
Hey brother!t My husband and I got out of the suburbs 2 1/2 years ago and have our own homestead!!! Yay! We really need all the tips on organization you can give us. We are starting this very late in life, as we are in our late 60's. But, my husband still has it! A retired carpenter who built me almost 100 raised beds to grow food at the age of 65. He rocks! You have been an inspiration to both of us and doing a series on organization for our homestead would be something we'd definitely watch! We are patrons of your channel and wanted to say congrats on growing the Cherokee Purple! I'm planting about 80 tomato plants and I just put in 25 Cherokee Purples. I haven't tried the Arkansas Traveler yet, but it will be on my list for next year. I'll get my seeds for those now while we still can! God bless you Zach. You've helped us so much with your channel.
What are your long term ideas to keep GMOs out of your crops from cross pollination. GMO seeds can reproduce but the plants come back weaker not as hardy... I mean I know living far away is key, lol. I had thought long game doing bees to control my pollinators... Just thinking out loud. Also, I think episodes on homestead organization would be awesome. Always excited to learn new things. Thanks for staying real in a sold out world.

Cherokee Purples are my favorite! They are prone to splitting, but that's a small blemish to tolerate for that outstanding flavor and production 🙂

Good idea, trying to learn new thigs ect. Can be inhibited by not being organized and it's hard to get organized when you are not experienced in a certain area. It would give you a better idea on what you will need for everything to function properly.

Zac, organization always makes life easier. Having been on my homestead for just over a year now (May 3rd 2023) finding my things that I packed into a plastic bin 12 months earlier would be the biggest thing by far to do. I had over 60 big plastic bins that were all the same color and size made it hard to categorized I would now coded each one with a colored dot to determine which room it came from then numbered each bin Then a master chart with what exactly was in each bin... Remember everything you owned is now in 3 different storage lockers and some pilled in the woods around your new homestead. I am just getting to the point to where I can get what i need in a relatively short amount of time. Bringing 3 loads of things in a 20' cargo trailer and have no idea which storage building its in. Now having the house almost completed things are getting back to normal and I can now start working the land and gardening, cutting trees for solar panels, getting chickens housed and Guinea fowls almost ready for their job of annihilation of ticks on my land to just mention a few things

Pro tip: Homestead LAYOUT!! . Many folks are setting up "shop". I am a reclaimed lumber guy and get into MANY historic farmsteads. One in particular was a very remote (perhaps "private" is a better discription) it was near a VERY early iron furnace for pig iron, a rail line, coal mines so lots activity in the area . It was abandon in the 1960s...just walked away. It was a time capsule. I later learned that an Italian family lived there and there most interestingly they were the local butchers, so there was nice shop for that, smoke house, coop, barn, brood house, shop. . Much was reused from ALL sorts of industries (road paver brick brooder house!! Indestructible) there was a tunnel from the milk parlor out underground thru a tunnel supported by old mine rail lined with shale. So so cool. BUT they layout spoke to proximity and efficency based upon water (spring access) and topography. While every lay of the land is different, there are some standards. DO IT!! R
