Mercedes is Williams energy supplier, they're like a junior team to Mercedes in a way. This has been especially true with Williams and Mercedes over the years. You see it with Ferrari and Haas/ Alfa Romeo as well.
Do people have a better option when Rosberg leaves at the end of the season without warning? Or do people think Mercedes will promote an F2 driver with no experience in F1 straight to the best team against the best teammate, especially since most of the best ones are in other teams junior driver programmes and constructors titles are on the line? Or maybe people think Red Bull would really let a driver like Daniel Ricciardo leave and join Mercedes when they are competing against Mercedes for the title? And no drivers like Hulkenburg, Perez, even if they were open didn't look as promising as Bottas did in the Williams. Literally only a few drivers looked better than Bottas in F1 at the time. The only reason that the Malaysia failure doesn’t feel right as a “planned” move is Nico and Vettel colliding on lap 1 and punting Nico to the back of the field... Nico had to absolutely claw his way back up to 4th (inheriting 3rd when Lewis’ engine blew). I mean Mercedes had no way of knowing that specifically Malaysia would be so crucial to changing the championship, and all that work would have been a total waste had Nico been only 2 places back. Had Merc planned to kill any of Lewis’ races, they would have had to have it planned in advance, and planning that in advance would just be too risky, otherwise, if they had a theoretical kill switch, a race like Monaco would have made way more sense, since Nico was doing even worse, down in 7th.

Maybe the thing that really pushed him into retirement was that he was burned out from all the toxicity and hyper-competitiveness and he needed to take time away from racing? When your father is Keke Rosberg you have some big shoes to fill. I always felt like Nico was not a born racing driver and probably would not even have moved up to F1 if he had a different father. So once he reached his ultimate goal of becoming F1 champion like his father, he instantly retired. I salute him for it. He had a goal, reached it, and realized he did not have the motivation to (probably fruitlessly) chase another championship for many years to come.

I remember that race in Malaysia. I remember that Lewis was pumping in the lap times and I was thinking there's no point pushing it as you could blow the power train as F1 cars are built to run at certain temp tolerances and you're racing in Malaysia, one of the hottest races on the calendar at that time - better to pace it and finish the race in a measured way...........2 or 3 laps later Lewis's power train blew up.
I always thought Rosberg was underrated though - not on the same level in terms of speed as Lewis (not many can claim to be that!) but definitely far better than many thought. Bottas has been there for now his 5th season and he has not reached the same consistency in qualifying or race pace as Rosberg did. I think it's fair that Rosberg bowed out when he did, he achieved what he wanted, no point in carrying on if you're not motivated to do it, and I don't think he would have retained the title because Lewis would have been super motivated to beat him

    How I see it:
There was no sabotage, there was no secret deal, there was no crazy conspiracy.
Nico gave up being a father and a husband for the entirety of 2016 to focus on winning the championship. The man didn’t even sleep in the same room as his wife he was that dedicated.
Everyone seems to mention that Nico got lucky with his championship because of Hamilton’s DNF. But I’d say he used the Alain Prost approach. Nico had such a lead on the championship by Japan that he knew he only had to finish 2nd in the final 4 races to win the championship. To him there was no point in pushing the engine to the limit to try and get the win if it only caused unnecessary risks of a mechanical DNF for him. I’m sure that if he wasn’t strongly in the lead of the championship, he would’ve raced harder and pushed the engine more (potentially causing a DNF for himself) to try and remain in the fight, but he didn’t have to. He built up a lead and only did what was necessary to win the championship. Once he’d won the championship he’d achieved his dream, and has made his family proud, so he retired. It would’ve been suspicious if he continued racing competitively and continuously in other categories but he didn’t, he genuinely achieved what he set out to achieve and so he retired to spend more time with family and to focus on improving the environment. Very commendable from him.
    Long story short:
I know that Hamilton is a better driver than Nico, but I believe that Nico won fairly in 2016 using the Alain Prost method. He retired for his family and for his well-being, it’s commendable.

The second theory makes lots of sense. Mercedes in the 2014-2016 period had a superior car to every other team in every sense of the word. The only way Mercedes could end up not winning in 2017, 2018 etc. was if the rivalry between it's two drivers kept causing problems. Changing Nico Rosberg for a thankful less important but good driver that would accept his position as second in the team and work for Lewis to win (Bottas) meant securing lots of victories for Mercedes in the future and the best way to get rid of Rosberg was to give him what he had always wanted, a WDC and retirement to spend time with his family. Bottas did exactly as expected of him in the following years working for the time and for Hamilton.

I can see that (if it is true) giving a driver no life for the whole season as his work with the team would still need to be done as well as all of the sponsorship commitments too, I'm not totally sold on this being possible or even allowed, but if it is possible then after a year of this I would want to retire too, there is more to life than living in hotels and catching planes.

Nico's fight with Lewis in 2016 shook him to the core. Nico admitted that he was literally counting grams to maintain his race pace. I'm not kidding, the man said that he weighed his socks, the paint on his helmet..what he ate...etc.
He even admitted to having zero, zero distractions in his fight for the Championship including no contact with family or friends that year. Even sleeping in separate beds from his wife.
My opinion is that this was a decision (deal) they made together for him to retire if he won the title.
It was a personal decision on his part and I respect him for it, there's no way he could repeat that. In my opinion Lewis would destroy him the following year.
Now having said all that, I like Nico. I told my son in 2010 that this driver is very quick and under rated. One day he will be World Champion. I didn't know that he would beat Lewis. Incredible..not too many people on this planet can say that.

Don't think there was anything untoward. Gotta remember about the second theory, Lewis entered that season having dominated Nico in 2015. So there was very little rivalry in actual fact as they were rarely on the same piece of tarmac. Nico then came into 2016 ready to attack and Lewis struggled to come to terms with it until July, when he won some 4 races in 1 month. I think it was just destiny at Malaysia. 2016 was destined to be Nico's year, and everything fell his way. He knew he probably could not repeat his effort, so he decided to leave at his peak, which is admirable, as everyone else would keep fighting for more wins in what was without doubt the best team, and still is.

    • @LibertyOverDeath-27

It would've only been admirable had he won the title on merit. But anyone who watched that season knows that he didn't beat Lewis in a straight fight and likely never could over the course of a season. He knows it too. That's why he left and why he will be a forgettable champion. Consider this, even with all of the reliability issues Lewis had that year, he still only lost the title by 3 or 5 points at the last race. In 2015, where I think Nico had a few more reliability issues, Lewis won the title with several races to spare.

For some sportsmen and women, achieving your goal, even if it’s just the once is enough.
This is not a criticism, far from it, to reach the pinnacle in a sport you have dedicated your whole life to, is a wonderful and tremendous achievement.
Plenty of great F1 drivers never achieve that world championship and some truly great drivers have only won the title once. For some it was enough.
Winning the title multiple times demands not only tremendous skill and determination but also some luck, the right team and car but most importantly an unbelievable hunger to keep winning.
Nico like many other one time champs, Damon Hill, Mansell and James Hunt were also driving in a time when, arguably, all time greats were racing.
To keep that hunger for another world championship, against someone who you know has done it time and time again, when you’ve given your all so many times before and come up short, to have had to deal with the disappointments of losing the title in close battles, to keep going when you think maybe the chance has gone, to keep all that when you finally get your hands on it, must be incredibly difficult, and so hard to keep yourself motivated to go through it all again.
This in no way dismisses their achievements, like the others, a little more luck, one different decision and they could of all won at least another. It does however show the absolute ruthlessness, unrivalled determination and insatiable hunger that multiple championship winners possess.
I can see why Nico retired. He finally achieved his dream, after some close calls, a fractured friendship, the crushing blows and disappointments, and against a driver who statistically has broken all the records. He had nothing left to give, and nothing left to prove to himself. He probably knew deep down he either couldnt or didn’t want to, go through it all again. So he retired as the world champion.

Nico wasn't a wonder kid as Max or Lewis when he joined F1, but he indeed carved his legacy in a way that no one could forget him. He was a good mid-field driver who took so long to get his first win. From that to challenging a wonder kid whom he has seen since childhood is really commendable achievement for him.
A Sabotage from Mercedes theory doesn't stand. Because if so it could also be said that Lewis won 2014 & 2015 because Nico had more reliability issues. Plus Nico's high competition and a rivalry at such high level also affected morale of Lewis in 2016 season. We often say Nico was only driver to get into Lewis's head, not Vettel, not Alonso and not Valteri.
Nico improved himself to such a level that he could be equal to Lewis. By doing that he was getting frustrated every season and when he clinched a World Title from Lewis's hands he decided that's enough. He refrained from trying to do that again. We remember him because of that otherwise look what happened to Vettel and Alonso.

  • @elliotcrossan6290
    @elliotcrossan6290 3 роки тому +5

You have to remember that Hamilton didn't just suffer the infamous engine failure in Malaysia 2016. He also had engine problems which caused him to start from the back in China and Belgium, and from tenth in Russia. The only reliability problem Rosberg suffered all year was a five-place gearbox penalty in Austria (which only ended up dropping him four places).
Lewis already took 12 poles and 10 wins to Nico's 8 poles and 9 wins. Without these reliability problems, Lewis may well have taken up to 15 poles and 14 wins, breaking records in the process, and would almost certainly have won the title.
Whilst its impressive that Nico managed to get as close as he did to one of the greatest drivers of all time, there's not much doubt that all things being equal Lewis would've beaten him, and would already be an eight-time Champion.

I think Rosberg retired because he'd had enough of the mind games from Hamilton, after he was backed up into the clutches of Verstappen and Vettel in the closing stages in Abu Dhabi.
Either that, or he truly retired to be there more for his family.

He didn’t need the stress of being Hamilton’s team mate anymore. He lucked into a championship due to the unreliability of Lewis’s car that year. He leads a charmed life. His father is wealthy, he is wealthy, lives in Monaco and still coins it in by doing commentary for Sky Sports. If I were him I’d probably have done the same, he’s just one lucky guy but extremely likeable. Fair play to him.

I also found it suspicious that paddy Lowe left Mercedes after 2016. During Abu Dhabi Lewis and paddy got heated during the race. Even though Lewis was slowing down to try win the championship while leading , paddy was telling Lewis to speed in order to "win this race". But this was a clear message to Lewis that Rosberg is underthreat from the driver behind him. But this is a championship fight which made no sense . Something definitely got heated after that season.

So if Nico had stayed until 2018 when his contract ran out, then they would need a driver for the 2019 season. Could that have been George Russel? Is Nico Rosberg retiring the only reason Russel is still at Williams?

Nico is a really cool guy. I have a lot of respect for him. He is laughing at anyone who is goading him into returning to F1, having achieved what he wanted and having nothing else to prove. If he hadn't won in 2016, he would have kept racing until he had a championship. But the mental and personal sacrifice required was immense. Clearly Nico's family and other pursuits (he is pretty environmentally focused) are more important to him than being the best in the world. His title says it all.

I think Rosberg's retirement goes in line with "You either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain." I think Rosberg only cared about beating Hamilton one time and that was it. If Rosberg stayed for another year, I think it would have went down like a Prost vs Senna rivalry.

I think if you carry on and on you run the risk of your excellence being completely forgotten due to bad years later on. Take a look at Jenson during his last few years at mclaren and Sebastian right now: both incredible talents, but people often seem to think of them as how they were/are in their less successful years and completely dismiss how sensational both were. By retiring on top, nobody ever gets the opportunity to say you “fell off” or “should’ve left sooner”. They say you’re only as good as you’re last race, so Nico definitely did the right thing in leaving at his peak

Nico knew that everyone in Mercedes camp was in Lewis' corner especially Toto and Lauda, i mean we all remember everytime something happened on track it was always Nico's fault and never Lewis' fault, not even once and both Toto and Lauda were very vocal about it in front of media, so how do you move ahead as a champion and defend your title when your team principal is playing favorites and wants to see your team-mate/rival succeed at all cost, so he figured out that he was there for Racing not Politics.

    Very straightforward.
    Diversity of colour is key.
Nico wasn't expected to put up such a fight. This was a problem on the diversity train.

They started by swapping his mechanics, which was crazy, and some how he had engine problems and his starts were really bad. Don't forget at azerbaijan when lewis mysteriously had a steering wheel setting out of place and couldn't be told what was wrong with his car under the new regulations, but nico was told at the british GP when he had trans problems. And please don't forget austrian GP when lewis started ahead of nico and thew pit stops nico jumped lewis. O and for the final pit stop they put nico on faster tires ahead of lewis. And man, in the last race of the year, telling lewis to speed up and let nico win. I think lewis knew because he only tried to back nico up after the last pit stops. Also after lewis's motor blew up in china in the lead , his statement after was" someone doesn't want me to win". I think the whole season was bent and I can't wait for the book.

I just can't see him beating Lewis without external interference, and him returning for the following season would've made that obvious when there was a return to the status quo. When Lewis was winning the prior seasons it wasn't because Nico was having a bunch of Dnf's, but interestingly this was the case for Lewis during the season that Nico won and for a perennially reliable outfit. Also how is it that only his car was underperforming?

I do believe that all is not exactly as it seemed. There were a few too many coincidences and statements that don't really match what happened. I suspect #2 is closer to the truth than we would like to believe: since 2014 the rivalry had been growing and the obvious animosity was threatening the team. If you look at how that team has operated since and consider how much closer those more recent seasons could have been (I know it doesn't look it in the final numbers but think back to the feeling during those seasons to how close Ferrari sometimes felt) it feels like a huge and deliberate shift in team culture which helped fend off resurgent (at least on paper) rivals.

  • @adamadiba
    @adamadiba 3 роки тому +1

I believe it's simply because the mental toll that it took him to win the championship. When he finally got one, he knew what he had to do to be able to get it, and he didn't want (or need) it anymore, especially considering the insane distancing he did to his family during his champion year.
Moreover, the main key to Nico winning the championship in 2016 (that I rarely see mentioned by anyone) was his advantage over Lewis on race starts. Lewis outqualified him a lot of times but he struggled a lot at the starts (just search Lewis 2016 failed starts compilation) which led to Nico leading most of the race on the first corner, and most of the times that's all it takes to win a race. Also, those bad starts of Lewis led to a few first corner incidents that he had that year.

Won the title on merit? 🤡 So using illegal car modes that even Mercedes banned, pushing Lewis off the track, switching out Lewis’s mechanics and demanding Lewis’s car setup data is based on ‘merit’? So how come when Lewis won championships in 2008 at Mclaren or in 2014 & 2015 at Mercedes he didn’t need to do all that to win? I’ve never seen Lewis push Heikki off the track in 2008! Never heard of Lewis demanding to see Heikki’s car set ups or using his mechanics....explain that!
