When you're designing a logo, creating titles for a video, or making a custom thumbnail image for a UA-cam video, finding the right font can often be time-consuming and frustrating. I do a lot of work in Gimp and there is a faster and easier way to preview fonts in that program. A faster way than selecting your text and clicking on one font at a time.
The secret is to open up the text dialogue box. Then you can arrow up or down and select fonts instantly, and see what they look like of course.
There are at least 3 different ways to open up the text dialogue box and in this video, I show you my 2 favorite methods.
Hopefully, this will help save you some time and eliminate the frustration of finding the right font for your next project.

This has probably been the most helpful video I've seen on UA-cam in a long time.
this is the first tutorial this old that's actually worked for me and I mean that for anything GIMP related so thank you
Beautiful. Excellent. Thank you. My only suggestion if you're watching this is to go to settings>playback speed>2.0
Oh boy, I intent to use fonts in Gimp A LOT, so discovering this right before starting the process makes me a very happy person ^^ A huge thanks from a newbie!
Hello - I had to delete my original text, and then redo the layer. Once I did that, this method worked. Thank you for this information and tutorial - it made matching up a font to an original one sooooo much easier. All the best, Cheers Rick
i guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
Thanks @smartdrivetest! Your comment helped me see the fonts update in real time. 👍
So Helpful! ,was trying to find a handwriting font and now i can just breeze through and see how it looks
Wow! Great tip! I've been using Gimp for years and I never thought I could do that kind of thing. Thanks a lot, man!
Thank you so much! Learning GIMP and its so complex it is overwhelming. Ive watched a handful of your videos
Thank god I found your video (and I'm not even religious lol). I was getting crazy and putting off making a dumb youtube cover art because I couldn't quickly select a font. I knew it was impossible for people to keep using GIMP with that dumb way of selecting fonts. Why is it so hidden? I wish I could give you a hundred likes. Now I can go back to work. :)
Thanks that was just what I needed. Didn't have the font selector at first, just the area to type in font names. Thought Gimp expected me to know the name and look of all possible fonts from memory.
Thank you!! Not knowing this has been my biggest frustration with GIMP.
Very, very helpful. Font selection has really been giving me a headache in gimp.
That is a much quicker way to try out fonts. Thank you!

Thank you I almost went back to Photoshop. GIMP is the best.
Great stuff, thanks :)
Cool video it deserves more views
when I highlight a new style text in the dialog box , nothing happens. any suggestions why??
It seems like in GIMP 2.10.14 is not working.
you are the best. thank you.
You can also select your text, hover over the Aa font select button and use mouse wheel to change font
Between this comment and twin-star's video this is exactly what I've needed for a silly amount of time. Something worth mentioning though is that if you go for the mouse wheel, DONT click the text preview button to get the list shown first, that disables the wheel. Just hover the [Aa] button and roll the wheel.
Thanks man!
"gimping made easy" - Thanks twin-star media

THHHAAAAAANNNK YOOOUUUUUU!!!!! You're the best!

You da man.
prefer using Font Massive of just other font manager just because some day you'll find out you need to set categories to your collection
How do you get all that stuff to show up in the tool box? I can't find the dialog box.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. So much better. Thank you.
i tried this and everything worked as in your video but as i scroll down and click through the list of fonts it does not change the text that i have selected to change, any advice?
Click on the real text to be sure the text tool is selected and you can modify the text. Then you can scroll down the list.
I was Wondering how to hide the system fonts that come with windows.
I Only Want be able to use commercial fonts that I add myself.
also I would almost never use any of the standard Windows Fonts
I know you can change what folders it searches for fonts but I have not been able to get it to work for me.
I have tried to find info on it through google and also UA-cam but no luck
I'm sorry, I don't know how to hide the system fonts.
Thank You For The Reply
I Decided to just create another folder and rename all the fonts wit AAA at the beginning so that they are at the top of the list.
That Way I know what ones I can use for business
Thank You Again For Your Time
Does not seem to work in 2.10 - 2019 anymore. It does not preview the fonts when I switch.
all the fonts you need: ua-cam.com/video/nsrF7LuWYoQ/v-deo.html
Are you able to do this on microsoft word?
all the fonts you need: ua-cam.com/video/nsrF7LuWYoQ/v-deo.html
Gah! This has bugged me for a couple of months. Cheers.
I'm using GIMP 2.8.18 on windows, and the trick doesn't seem to work :(
I'm using 2.8.14. Did you try going to Windows, then dockable dialogs, then fonts like at 2:47 in the video?
Yes, nothing works. Not only that, but using the dockable dialog won't do anything, even if I highlight the text it won't even change the size. Clicking "use editor" brings up another window, which still doesn't work much. Only the tiny window that appears on the canvas right above the text will affect the text, and only the highlighted bit, and that's terrible :(
I've installed gimp 2.8.14 . It cried about the library being gimp 2.8.18 and also deleted gimp 2.8.18, so I deleted everything and installed 2.8.14, and now I can change fonts. It seems that gimp 2.8.18 introduced several bugs about text.
Thanks for your video btw :)
Wow. I wonder why they would do something that took away a valuable function. Hopefully it is just a bug and they will come out with another, better update.
I'm glad it's working for you now though. :-)
Twin-Star-Media
considering how the whole text editor tab doesn't work, and the other extra use editor window neither, it's certainly a bug, although I don't know how many users it affects. I guess I'll stick with 2.8.14 :)
Its like photoshop except it makes you hate yourself for simply wanting a different font
2:47 is the easiest way
eikit nx
thank you!
Thanks!
