- Remove Spray Paint From Motorcycle Plastics | Honda Cb500f Cafe Racer Build #2
Removing spray paint can be easy with the right tools. In this video, I will show you how to remove spray paint from motorcycle fairings using xylene. Xylene or xylol is an effective solvent to remove spray paint. This method can be used on anything, even your car.
Back in January of 2019, I purchased this 2013 CB500F from a Copart auction. It was stolen and recovered. Due to this, it had two different coats of spray paint on it and overspray everywhere.
I will be calling this CB500F build a cafe racer. There are other CB500F custom motorcycles out there that are being called brat or scrambler. I plan on putting a cowl behind the sear, so I guess that makes it a cafe racer.

My bike was stolen and the thieves spray painted it really poorly, so I'm thankful you made a video that'll help me get my bike somewhat pretty looking again!
I hope it works well for you!
I just picked up a bike in similar condition. I was resigned to it being great except for the paint, but you’ve inspired me to give this a try!
It's worth a shot. Thanks for the comment 👍
Wow! So no need to sand the paint off? Had to take a whole lot of plastic off my high-end and powerful scooter the AK 550 to put new forks on it. While I have all this plastic off I want to repaint it. I hated the factory bland gray color on it when bought new and so I painted as good as I could without taking any parts off. I made mistakes and had runs which were not too noticeable and I also had issues when pulling masking tape off. Now that the bike is almost completely taken apart I want to re-do most of the plastic pieces. Was wondering if there was a rotary tool, dremel or something that would get the paint off quick. Thanks for this video!
Wow, looks great \m/
Hey, thanks!
I personally love the CB 500F without the fairings, it really feels like a naked
Good video though! Bike looks straight off the showroom
Thank you!
These are well shot and edited. You should make a lot more.
Thank you! I will make more videos sometime. I really do appreciate it 🙏
Great video. Question. Does this work on factory paint . I replace a panel thats cracked. And repaint a whole goldwing from blue to pearl white.
Or old school and paper
Thanks! I think you would need to use something stronger for factory paint. The xylene removed the spray paint, but not the factory paint.
@@S09Engineering i guess its sand paper , with water....i just gotta fine out which grid
Thanks
Good video sir.
I hope you keep your good work going. I have 1 question, If I mix Xylen with IPA, will it speed up the removing process? Thanks sir.
Thank you! I'm am not sure about mixing, as I have not tried it.
If i want remove the second Spray to get the original paint..for motorcycle ..Can use any type of XYlene or Special Xylene..
There was nothing special about the xylene I used. I would assume any xylene you can find should be fine.
hey hopefully you reply...i just wanna know if this is alcohol, or some kind of special paint removal we don't have this where i am??? thanks if you reply
I suppose you could try acetone.
Hello curious if it cause any issues and damaged the plastic or tried to eat it? Thank you!
Nope. No damage!
@@S09Engineering awesome thank you very much I appreciate the info will definitely subscribe!!
Hi, my bike has matte black over the original paint but im not sure what kind of paint. It seems flakey and scratches off (not plasti dip) so maybe it is spray paint. Should it work on most paints? And did you have any issues damaging the original paint. Cheers
In my situation there was zero prep work done to the original finish. The black paint was pretty easy to remove and the original finish underneath seems fine. Your situation could be different if they sanded the bike before painting. Give it at try on a small hidden area and see what happens.
@@S09Engineering awesome cheers will do, and i can see parts of original glossy paint where it has been scratched/ chipped. So am excited to see if its pristine underneath 😁. Also sorry to bother you again and i know your not a professional but i can find any xylene where i live, could isopropyl do the same job in theory? Or meths/turps? Thanks again
@@timsteven4116 maybe mineral spirits?
Can this help in removing from metal tank ...I own royal Enfield Himalayan ...
Yes. I removed the paint from the tank as well. All using the same method.
Awesome vid
Thanks!
Ha my Ole bike!
It has been a good little bike.
About how much does this stuff cost? Got a bike recently and the paint job is honestly really bad on it. Probably a rattle can, but when I looked closer, theres a few small chips and the original paint looks completely untouched!
It's about $25 for a gallon
I have a BMW off road motorcycle g650x xchallenge and the previous owner gave it an ugly paint job
Good luck! I hope it comes off for you.
Use Autoglym Bumper & Trim Gel once all paint is removed from plastics.
Will look like new again .
I'll look into that. Thanks for the tip!
Hi from across the pond would this wondering if this would work on a perspex screen? I bought a fairing and they had painted the screen black so i would like to get rid of the paint what do you think?. Cheers Mal
I believe it will take the paint off. Will it hurt the clear plastic? I'm not sure. Probably not, but unfortunately only one way to find out. I guess you could find some similar plastic and dunk it in xylene over night and see what happens.
@@S09Engineering thanks for replying great chanel
I tried it on a scrap piece of perspex unfortunately it melted the perspex a bit, glad i never just put it on my fairing screen first thanks for advice Ryan
you sound bored in turn making viewrs bored.
Yeah, that is something I am trying to improve. Thanks for the feedback.
