Neil sold 50 million records from the late 60s to the early 70s. And he’s written hits for many other people.
“Calendar girl”, “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” “Working on a Groovy thing” the list goes on . Definitely belongs in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame.
He’s already in the songwriters Hall of Fame

I think Sedaka made the top ten twice with "“Breaking Up Is Hard to Do." The first time as a bouncy pop song, the second time as a ballad.

So, from my playlist of 25 here's 5 that showcase different sides of Neil:
Bad Blood - with Elton John on backing vocals. Elton knows talent when he sees it and helped resurrect Neil's career.
The Hungry Years - sometimes success isn't everything.
New York City Blues - stunning song about the decline of a great city.
The Immigrant - "There was a time when strangers were welcome here." Even more relevant today. His best song.
And there are so many I wanted to choose but I'll settle for Superbird - for everyone who ever wished they could fly.
But Laughter In the Rain was a good place to start, always a lovely tune.

As a teenager, Neil Sedaka got a scholarship to the Julliard School of Music to train to be a classical pianist. He liked popular music and decided to study pop songs to determine what made a song a hit. He joined with Howard Greenfield to write so many hit songs for himself and others. My favorites of his are "The Diary" (his first hit) and "You Mean Everything To Me". He got the idea for "The Diary" from Connie Francis, who he wrote some songs for; she had a diary which she was very protective and guarded about. He wrote "Stupid Cupid" and "Where The Boys Are" for Connie.

He started as a young songwriter, then singer who was part of the famous Brill Building crowd and was a friend from those days with Carol King (An early work was Oh Carol for her.). You may want to listen to another Neil Sedaka song he wrote in his youth for a young girl he was over the moon about.
It's titled " Oh Carol!" and was a big hit in 1958 for a pretty girl 3 years younger than him.
The young girl later became quite famous in her own right. Miss Carol King.

Just one of my favourite ever songs. The instrumentation, the melody, the song structure but most of all the sweet optimism of it. If you could only write one song ever and it was this you'd still be happy as you'd have written an all time classic! Such sentimental joy in the song, thanks to Neil and of course to Rob Squad for bringing it to as wide an audience as possible!

I was listening to this song just today it’s 50 years old now it came out in 1974 and yes it’s not a hard rocker or anything, but it is so beautiful. Neil Sedaka was very very popular earlier in his life and this was a comeback song for him. Thanks for reviewing it.

There were two very distinct periods of Neil Sedaka. The first was the early 60's when he was an adolescent and did pop songs about teen crushes and love etc that were of that time. The second period was his mid-70's comeback in his thirties (where this song is from) doing songs that were contemporary of that time. The latter is my preference. "Bad Blood", a duet with Elton from 1975 is recommended. He also wrote the Captain & Tenille hit "Love Will Keep Us Together" during this period.

Hi guys. Loving your channel and your eclectic song reactions. Neil Sedaka is one of my favourites, and I have had the pleasure of seeing him live here in the UK. He is super-talented. He has written hundreds of songs for some of the best artists, including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Carol King ..... the list goes on! I am pretty confident you will have heard some of them without knowing that he was behind them. I have several favourites, including Laughter in the Rain, but my no.1 is called 'Our Last Song Together' (It's quite sad, but beautiful). Then of course there's Solitaire, That's When the Music Takes Me, Love Will Keep Us Together, I'm a Song, Sing Me. I could list them all, but there are too many. Keep up the good work, guys. God bless you and your family ❤

"Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" is probably my favorite but he has so many great songs. There are two versions of this song. The original is doo-wop pop and the remake is a slow Jazz club version. I suggest you do a back to back reaction of them. The slow version is the one for me.

Wow you guys discovered one of the greats! A classically trained pianist, Sedaka cut his teeth on a string of rock n roll hits such as 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do' , 'Next Door To An Angel' and 'Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen'. Along with his songwriting companion Greenfield they wrote some of the most romantic 70's ballards and introspective songs like 'One More Mountain To Climb', 'The Hungry Years' and 'Betty Grable'. Sedaka also was known for lively showstoppers such as 'That's Where The Music Takes Me', 'Beautiful You' and 'Lonely Night / Angel Face' I could go on and on and on about how many great songs he has done for himself and other artists...

Neil Sedaka also wrote "Let the Good Times In" by the Partridge Family (although the actual artists performing were the Ron Hicklin Singers). It was first released by The Love Generation. John Bahler and Tom Bahler were a part of both The Love Generation and the Ron Hicklin Singers. It's a terrific little song.
