      gamer1884 I kept thinking: Dumbledore defeated this man in duel, how on earth could Fudge actually think that two Aurors, Umbridge and himself could EVER stand a chance against Dumbledore?! Cornelius Fudge is quite possibly the dumbest Minister of Magic in the history of the Ministry!

      StichLooWeen Did you notice that he kept waving his arm in a semi-circular fashion and turning his wrist clockwise and anti-clockwise? I've come to believe that he didn't actually created several shields, but one very strong shield charm that he kept feeding, possibly Protego Maxima (or Totalum - given that the shield walk with him)

      Yeah unfortunanetly the next film takes place in like 1928 or 1929, and the duel is in 1945. Unless there's a huge time jump, it'll be in movie 5, which is going to be in like 2024. I HOPE that the series is pure Dumbledore+Newt+Grindelwald and features the flashbacks mentioned above, and more backstory.

    I still cannot fathom how Fudge could have been so foolish to think that he, Dolores Umbridge, Shakelbolt and Dawlish stood a chance against the man who defeated Grindelwald in duel ... watching this scene it's plainly clear that Dumbledore could have, if he so desired, taken on the entire Auror Office of the British Ministry for Magic.

      well I suppose difference in cultures and the times could say something for it, I mean I imagine moving to the new world they wouldn't have necessarily been confined to the same rigid ways. (By that I mean that I imagine the only reason that wizards don't wear more modern clothing is that their superior powers(magical), give them a certain sense of self superiority which make themselves too arrogant to potentially improve their own society using muggle aspects in England. Potentially this is something that to a certain aspect they have decided that the US don't need, at least not in terms of borrowing aspects of No mag society in order to improve their own.)

The primary motives at the base of his actions are his ego (he feels special, he wants to be great, to achieve his potential, that urge for power which he later learns to keep under control) and his infatuation with a person he feels connected to, who is in fact a fanatic.

Maybe they'll give the other characters something to do in the background that aids in bringing down Grindelwald's army or some large scheme he has planned. But yes, with scenes placed in between different stages in the duel and then say how long has passed is the closest there will be to the full fight.

      He is fighting the best 10-20 MACUSA Aurors at the same time, non-verbally with a wand that doesn't belong to him and given how he avoids using it during the film, probably doesn't even have its allegiance, and he only gets stopped not by the Aurors but by Newt's Beasts that were behind him and he wasn't counting on. The same kind of underestimation that Voldemort had, he doesn't acknowledge or take anything besides wizards into consideration.
      And likely neither does the elder wand and since a beast disarmed him (Tina only retrieves the wand, and does NOT disarm him) he likely doesn't lose the elder wand's allegiance.

      Couple that with his ability to decieve the entire Ministry pretending to be Percival Graves for years, and subsequently overpowering 20+ Ministry Aurors by himself

Knowing that the elder wand didn't exist in Rowling's head back then and also knowing that the deathly hallows are not all they are made to be, using the elder wand doesn't take away anything from Dumbledore.

    A few thoughts about Newt capturing Grindelwald with such apparent ease (apologies for the length):
    1) When Grindelwald fought Newt earlier, Newt attempted only one attack, a standard magical blast with his wand, and it was easily deflected. The rest of the battle Newt spent dodging, defending, and almost getting electrocuted. Grindelwald would not have seen him as an offensive threat, especially compared to the Aurors.
    2) Grindelwald's speech was intended to plant seeds of doubt in his listeners about the MACUSA policy of hiding - and when he says "I ask all of you" he takes a long look back at Newt and Tina. He knows they watched Credence get (apparently) killed, and I'm sure he wants them to be thinking about Credence when he says "who does this law protect?", and wants them thinking that the law is what forced Credence into his condition and ultimately got him killed. Despite having just fought both of them, because of Credence they're his most likely "converts" to opposition to the law.
    3) If you watch the Auror's blasts hit Grindelwald's shield, from the way the energies dissipate it looks like the shield is spherical. So he was prepared for that kind of magical attack by Newt or Tina as well as the Aurors, and if either of them _had_ attacked magically like that, their attacks would have similarly hit the shield and been deflected.
    4) Also, when he starts walking back and the battle begins, Tina and Newt are on his left but still in front of him. He can see that they're not attacking along with the Aurors. That might have made him think that they were at least pondering what he said, torn between the two sides.
    5) This bit is even more speculative, but I don't think Newt released the Swooping Evil just as a distraction. Grindelwald, as Graves, would have gotten reports from the Aurors who chased Newt and Tina, so he would have known that the creature could deflect magical blasts. When it flies in front of him, you can see several blasts hit the ceiling, indicating that the Swooping Evil _had_ deflected several attacks, probably from the Aurors. This may have led Grindelwald to believe that Newt had been convinced by the speech and was fighting _with_ him, and caused him to let down his guard a little in that direction. To me, the look on his face as the creature flies behind him and he starts to turn around says "I can't believe I convinced you so quickly".
    6) You can see from Grindelwald's face that he is completely shocked when his hands are seized by whatever-it-is Newt threw at him. He wasn't _planning_ to be captured, at least not by Newt, and he is first shocked, then angry. But I suspect he _had_ planned for the possibility of capture, so after getting over his surprise at _how_ he was taken, he settled into his more customary arrogance.

      I love this kind of discussion. I doubt number 4 though because he had sentenced them to death and just been trying to kill Newt moments before. It would be foolish of them to think they'd come to his side.
      As for 5, you can't read too deeply into the too-early shocked look on his face. I think Colin thought Grindelwald would see something looming behind him out of the periphery of his vision that grabbed his arms before he could react. They didn't end up animating it that way though. Grindelwald stared straight ahead at the aurors during the fight. He didn't look up at the swooping evil. So, why would he have noticed it less conspicuously coming up behind him? Which reminds me, why didn't an auror just apparate immediately behind Grindelwald and grab his arms?

    • @jamesvach6698
      @jamesvach6698 4 роки тому +6

      @M G I think I heard somewhere that Grindlewald had something of a tendency to have little interest or tolerance for those whom he considered beneath him. Thus he likely did not consider Newt anything more then a nuisance.

An average wizard/witch could only deflect spells from one or a few wizards/witches, but Grindelwald was able to deflect from many Aurors at the same time and hit some Auror's back. But I noticed Madam President Sarafina Picquery did not draw her wand, she looked amazed and I think she knew right then that was Grindlewald because I don't believe Graves could ever hold back that many Aurors. The MACUSA President is very powerful with in her own right, it would have been interesting to see a duel between the two of them. There's been so much negativity towards Johnny Depp's casting as Grindelwald and honestly, it's irritating.
    We've only seen him as Grindelwald for just about a minute and that's barely enough to start saying he'll be terrible in the role. Besides, if Rowling believes he is the right choice then I'm confident. It's true he's not been on top form for a while now, but give him a chance. Playing the villain may suit him.
    Personally I think his brief part was promising. He was chilling and the expressions he made (that smile he gives Newt as he's lead away) were spot on. And am I the only one who thinks the design of Grindelwald was great?

      Depp is a fantastic actor and has played and brought to life so many iconic and interesting characters (e.g Jack Sparrow) and his movies show he has the perfect range to play Grindelwald.
      Some didn't like his "design" as Grindelwald but I think it looks fantastic. Instantly iconic and if the way he plays the character matches the appearance, he'll likely steal the show in the next few movies.

      I completely agree. Technically speaking Grindelwald had about two minutes of actual screen time. But Johnny Depp owned those couple minutes. Just the right blend of elegence and crazy. Sort of like a Hilter and the Godfather comparison

    • @chocolateyes613
      @chocolateyes613 7 років тому +6

      The negativity has more to do with the twist being unnecessary and poorly executed, than who was actually cast as Grindelwald. It is quite obvious that Johnny Depp's head was sloppily edited into the scene, and that is Colin Farrell's body. It also does not help that his contacts are completely distracting, and his German/Austrian "accent" is terrible.

    • @ajsmith5820
      @ajsmith5820 7 років тому

      chocolateyes613 It's true there's no denying the editing was imperfect and the twist was at best unnecessary, but I did not say that was the main source of the negativity. What I meant was how most of the initial reaction towards Depp's casting was negative. I did not at all say it was the main source of the poor response to this scene. I was speaking distinctively about Depp's casting as a separate thing, not this scene.
      Everywhere I have looked there is an overwhelming amount of criticism to Depp's casting. I personally find it infuriating when people decide how an actor will be in a role before they've even seen them completely in the role. There's a lot of examples of this and more often than not the actor excels and proves their detractors wrong.
      Perhaps his accent wasn't perfect, but as I was trying to say, give him a chance.

    Grindelwald casually taking on approximately 20 Aurors at once showed what a badass villain he is. He's like "Okay, fuck it, let's get this over with", then casually dispels their barrier and starts wailing on them without saying a word or even using any aggressive spells. Everything they throw at him is just deflected back at them like a lightsaber deflecting a blaster bolt. It's a nice contrast to Voldemort, who is much more aggressive.
    However, this scene wasn't shot very well. They should have shown Grindelwald dropping his wand before Tina summoned it. Because they didn't do that most people, myself included, mistakenly thought that she just achieved mastery of the Elder Wand (the fact that Grindelwald wasn't actually using the Elder Wand means nothing because Draco Malfoy wasn't using it either when Harry achieved mastery). The Swooping Evil technically disarmed him and the Elder Wand doesn't recognise animals as its master, but we don't see the wand drop from Grindlewald's hand so it's very easy for people to think that it passed on to a new master in this scene.

      me personally call me a perfectionist but I found him a too flamboyant for the character which ironically was the same problem I had with Ralph Fiennes doing Voldemort although in that case I suspect as with here they have purposely made a character less frightening then their book counterpart to make the films more family accessible (unfortunately the deathly hallows doesn't get that past because of the scene of Hermione being tortured in part 1)

      While Voldy wasn't that scary in the films, it kind of suited his character, I big point about Voldemort's character, is that he dosn't live up the hype, beneath all his reputation and mystique, he's just man who's everybit as fallible as everyone else.

    Just what I expected from Dumbledore's archenemy. Grindelwald was using Graves' wand and yet if it wasn't for Newt's sneak attack, he would've defeat all aurors and president herself. The reason why Tom Riddle Jr was placed No.1 as most dangerous dark wizard of all time is because he was a psychopath who killed anyone standing in his way. In terms of leadership skills, understanding of human psychology, wisdom, and intelligence, Grindelwald was superior. If you read Deathly Hallow, you can see that even though he was already dead, Dumbledore had Voldmort on his palm. Dumbledore's planning skills and understanding of people's relations allowed him to completely toy with Riddle. Grindelwald's skills and intelligence are near mirror level of Dumbledore. In terms of over all skills, Grindelwald deserves No.1 in the list of most powerful dark wizard of all time. Unlike Grindelwald's ideology was somewhat understandable, Voldmort was using blood superiority as his tool for gaining more power for himself only.

    • @carlgordonjr
      @carlgordonjr 4 роки тому +3

      Garammaru - Grindelwald is the #1 dark wizard, he’s only placed second cause the franchise came out second, Same reason Voldemort’s wizarding war is known as the first when there’s clearly Grindewald, only because she thought of his idea first but skillfully, Grindewald is more powerful then Voldemort. Especially Voldemort with the Horcruxes who was weak after them all being destroyed with a weak soul.

    • @thenetherlands5838
      @thenetherlands5838 2 роки тому +1

      And now with Secrets of Dumbledore released, (SPOILER ALERT) Grindelwald is basically the same as Voldemort. He also thinks that Muggles poison blood purity and make the wizards weak.

  • @gm.6561
    @gm.6561 5 років тому +35

    It’s crazy just to imagine how actually powerful Grindelwald was, and how could it be if he had created Horcruxes for him. But is very important to say that Grindelwald didn’t created the horcruxes not because he couldn’t, he most like could have done as well, but he never was obsessed with immortality or afraid of dying like Voldemort was. As a matter of fact, he always knew what creating those would cost him, and that death is inevitable, which makes him at the very least, far more wise than Voldemort.
    I personally think that Grindelwald was more powerful than Voldemort in terms of knowledge/spell skills, but Voldemort was far more cruel, destructive, and at his end almost irrational (also very skilled), which combined, made him even more dangerous than Grindelwald itself.
    J.K. Rowling world is even more amazing when you can see the details she has created!

    Let's face it: Newt is basically a Pokémon Trainer 0:56 when he releases his creature, it looks like a trainer sending their Pokémon out! The magical creature even makes a noise not unlike a Pokémon cry. Then it flies around to distract Grindelwald before Newt uses Power Whip/String Shot/Vine Whip (take your pick). When Newt calls it back, it seems to shrink and return to him, similar to a Pokémon!
    As someone who has been a Pokémon and Harry Potter fangirl since i was a kid, i love this movie! I wish they hadn't cancelled the series.
