As another licensed cosmetologist, I completely agree with you and appreciate you on box dye/ diy home color! It’s like as cosmetologist we are taught to create this awful stigma for diy color just to get people in our chair.
I’d far rather teach people how to maintain their hair at home vs making them feel like shit/letting them destroy your hair.

I honestly believe hairdressers warn against box dyes because they want the business, understandable they want to earn a living however the way they make out home hair colouring is the devil is not right
@@meeshrosenberg1983 I completely agree, and at this point there are so many salon quality products you can get as a consumer that the “box dye” argument doesn’t really hold much merit anymore. But for drastic changes like black to blonde I’d still go with a salon because of things like olaplex and reparative steps like that.
Of course any major changes I'd always go to a professional but a simple refresh or root touch up I'm confident enough to do it at home

Especially because some of us haven’t left our homes for more then a year and a salon is still too far into the future. Non of us should be shamed for doing our best in life under circumstances we are living with.
I appreciate you bringing it down to earth and saying how not everyone can afford quality results from a salon. Unlike a certain hair stylist I watch on UA-cam who is great and all but doesn't seem to understand poor people exist.

I love how you go into depth about the explanation behind things, it's so informative without being preechy like past hair dressers have always shamed me instead of explaining why certain things are bad decisions for your hair.
Sweet 'n' Low works as an anti-inflammatory, so no flare-up. No one I've ever mentioned it to knows this is a thing and it's great advice for anyone doing color on themselves or someone else with sensitive skin!

I have been having to do my roots for YEARS now. I have dark brown hair, and bleach it, then my hair is all pink. BUUUUT no one would ever touch my hair, because it's SO long... Even getting hair cuts. So I've taught myself everything haha
I have long, fine hair, and bleaching my roots is a struggle. I started again after over a decade, coloring short hair was much easier LOL

This might be an obvious question, but the time for bleach to sit on your head...is that from when you first start applying bleach or from when you finish coating your head? So for example if you're leaving it on 30 minutes max, is that 30 minutes from the second the bleach touches any hair or 30 minutes from when you finish applying bleach?
This is exactly what I needed. I was unemployed for 6 months because of Covid, so going to get my hair done is just out of the question. Plus I just enjoy learning to do things myself. I'm planning to go back to blonde (im dark auburn right now) so I can grow my hair out because i cant afford to keep coloring my hair. Thank you SO MUCH for this video!!

Wow!! You are absolutely a great teacher! I have been a hairdresser for 48 years. Still working. Your technique is fabulous. I watch so many tutorials on bleaching hair. Way to many fails! But you have given good tips and procedures on how to bleach at home. If you can do it correctly than you don’t have to go to the salon for a expensive correction! ✌️❤️😷

I know that you hear this all the time, but we love how real you are.... not insisting on products that only stylists have access to! You give tips and tricks that other videos do not include, I have sensitive skin and the sweetener added to bleach is a great trick! Haha I love what you said about your hubby doing your hair... I'm the same way, I wouldn't trust mine either, but then again, you are an expert! keep doing what you do, stay weird, we love it!

New subscriber here. You rock! I rarely go to hair salons because 9/10 times, they screw up my hair. The healthiest my hair has ever been was when I took care of it myself. So last month I decided to color my hair at a salon and of course, my hair is a hot mess. So NEVER AGAIN. No more hair salons for me. And it cost me a fortune and then cost me even more after the fact buying protein treatments, conditioning treatments, etc....
I've been bleaching my hair since i was 13 and I WISH there were yt videos back then as in depth as you are. I would have saved myself from so many bleach fails, broken ends etc. I can't bleach my hair anymore because I'm trying to grow out the blonde in my hair but this was sooooo satisfying to watch.
The hardest part for me when I’m doing my hair at home is sectioning. My hair is just a little past my collar bone but my hair is so thick, I have soooooo much hair.

It’s crazy when people bicker like ‘you SHOULD have went to the salon hrbrbrbr’ but after waiting forever for a salon to schedule me soon and contemplating on spending $250-$550, I decided to do it my darn self! So last week I ducked for Sally’s Beauty then went home and I bleached and dyed my hair blue and red....and LOVE it! 😍I learned a lot from my first experience, but now when I get compliments on my hair I ADORE it because it’s like they are complimenting my art 🥰🥰 I have so many future ideas!
this is why i subscribed... just down to earth about hair stuff... most hair youtubers just dread box dyes.. ive done mt hair with box dyes since high school almost 10 years... nothing drastic ever bad happened... just make sure you know what you doing

Thank you! I had multicolor hair and needed to fix it. All box dye. Everyone I called gave me prices of hundreds of dollars. I’m my husbands caregiver- he has terminal cancer. We don’t have that kind of money. Luckily very nice people at Sally’s recommended Colorfix and a bleach wash. Suggested your video. I just wanted to feel better about myself and it’s nice that people understand that many of us can’t afford the salon. It’s why I just kept doing black. I felt I had no other choice. I’m so ready for the video on your favourite bright hair dyes! Atm I have Arctic Fox Electric Paradise (diluted) in my hair and I’m running out. I don’t want to buy from them anymore, so I’m very curious which brands you like! Iro Iro looked amazing, but because it didn’t come out of your hair it scares the crap out of me. Had a situation like that years and years ago and just don’t want to deal with that again.
I know it’s not entirely the same but I did try iro iro when I had platinum white hair but I used the gray dye and it didn’t stay in my hair but I can’t say for the other colors
After I start applying bleach I can never get it to section and part right. I don’t know if I’m making it to thick or applying to much but it always becomes a struggle

I've been meaning to get a wisk to mix color. I've been coloring my own hair for awhile. It's time to invest. The oil that I've been using on my ends is cooking avocado oil. It was on clearance at the grocery store. Putting oil on the ends DEFINITELY helps and has saved my ends from that random bleach 100%.

I find that if I apply the bleach from the bleach line up to the roots really helps prevent overlap. I bleach my own hair at home too(also cosmetology trained).

I bleach my hair twice, first from back to front for 30 min with 30 vol, I wait 1 weak and then bleach my hair from front to back for 20 minutes with 20 vol, I wait 5 weeks between each session, and I wash my hair once a week. I bought olplex 1-2 (it was expensiiiive) and a week before, I do a treatment so I don't lose my wavy pattern.

I usually do my own. But I'm doing something a little bit out of my comfort zone so a friend that is a stylist is going to do it but I'm saving myself $$$ by lightening it myself. Been awhile since i did all my hair instead of under color or just hughlights.

I'm a complete newbie to bleach/ vivids but I've been using Wella powder bleach and Ion sensitive scalp 20 vol developer and it has been working so, so well. Getting ready to touch it up today so I'm so grateful for this video omg
Adding Sweet'N Low to your color stops burning and irritation. ... “It's thought that the pH for Sweet'N Low, which is acidic, reduces the pH of the color, which is alkaline, creating less sensitivity from color"
What about splenda?
@@ihatemythinhairbutter1669 Splenda considered acidic on the pH scale (5-6) and whereas Sweet'N Low is 4.5-5.5 making it slightly more acidic. It should be fine, but as always be careful with it because you never know how certain products will react to one another.

Last time I bleached my hair, I have missed some spots. I had to bleach a second time anyway, so I could fix that, but for my root-retouch in some weeks I will definitely keep the cross-checking in mind. Very informative video, thanks a lot. :)
