  • In this video we discuss what makes a Mustang Mach 1 a Mach 1. We let the owner show us how her ride sizes up versus the legendary 1969 Boss 429 Mustang.
We cover the details of this finely preserved 1969 Mustang Mach 1. Like the comfort weave front buckets , wood grain door panels, factory tach , lap timer (yes it had a factory lap timer). We take a look under the hood of this beauty and see the torquey 428 CJ in all its glory and ram air functional scoop. And yes we get to go drive the beast.
If you wanna skip to the good stuff - we test drive the Mach 1 at 4:25 in this epic video. And the chase scene is also saved for the end. Steve McQueen would have be proud.

Well remember the 428 Cj was hopped up by the factory to make it competitive. Where as the Boss 429 for the streets were detuned for warranty purposes. Now if you could buy a Boss 429 with a drag pack on it. Then I would say it would run much better. Ford just built something like 700 or 800 Boss 429’s to make them legal for nascar. Ford really wasn’t interested in building a performance road king out of it. So if a 428 CJ beats a street Boss. It’s really not a surprise. The biggest drawback I found on the big block mustangs was the 4 speed with a 2.32 first gear. And 3.25 rear gear. The big block cars over 400 inches under the hood came mainly with a close ratio 4 speed. A lot of guys learned to put the 2.78 1st ratio behind their big fords. And they ran great. But you had to have soft tires and a traction bar device on it to work best.

I worked in our towns (Titusville Florida) only machine shop with dyno when I was in H.S. in the early 70's. The shop worked on everything from central Florida locals to Daytona 500 race cars. I saw a lot of muscle cars and their engines come through the shop and I owned a '70 Mustang Mach I with a 351 Cleveland 4v engine. The Boss 429 as delivered was not a tremendous performing engine. Ford purposely had the car suffocated. In stock form the engine would dyno at about the advertised 375 HP but with big headers and an 1180 holley carb and no air filter and a proper tune they would pull almost 600 HP.

The BOSS 429 is severely detuned (different heads with smaller ports than the NASCAR iteration), governor rev limited internally from the factory, and with a tiny carburetor (smaller than BOSS 302) for starters.
People tell me it's non-fixable (which I believe), and this is why the BOSS Nine can't get off the line to save it's ass.
I guess changing the hideously tall rear end gear could help to a degree, but that's about it.
Additionally, all the 429's and 460's have a .020 larger bore spacing than the FE motors, making them big blocks instead of medium blocks as such, and as a result are at least 50 lb.'s heavier.
Ford should have kept installing the FE 427R motor in cars, and saved the 429/460 (385 block) for Thunderbirds, Lincolns, and trucks ect.

I had 69 mach 1. Was identical. Except i had the windsor 4 barrel engine, black interior with GT package. Simulated wood grain, clock in dash. Red inlays in carpet and seats. No spoilers or louvers. Also had a top loader 4spd. Had a ex stamped on intake. Was told it was a experimental intake. I want to say it had a autolite 4300 carb. But Had a staggered shock set up. 31 spline N-case 4.30 Detroit Locker. Drums in rear but dual piston calipers up front. No power steering. Called competition steering. Could literally snap your wrists when grabbing 2nd and if broke tires loose and spun around. Had my arms almost tied in a knot. Out of the 72000 made in 69. Mine was 1 of 5200 with GT package, 351w 4bbl and 4speed. Wanted to keep forever, but fell on hard times. And had to part with. My biggest regret in life. I even had a 74 sd 455 4 spd T/A that i traded for a jeep cj5 304 v8 headers and side pipes. Thats lift was treated 4x4s. And regret parting with mach 1 more than fire chicken. But today i wish i had both still. Also had a 67 buick gs400 4pd. And a 66 cyclone 390 4spd. Rolled that one. My last hotrod was a 04 terminator cobra. Now i drive a ford 500 and have 1st and 2nd gen vmax. And a 150 in evolution custom 300mm rear tire fat pounder. And the evo will dog both vmax. Time slips to prove. Vmax in low 10s but vtwin evo high 9s and its violent hp. Not smooth sailing like vmax's

That ex signified experimental. That intake with the autolite carb. Is unobtainable stuff. Mine had also and was offered 5500 for back in the early 90s. Only car you could get a 4bbl Windsor was the Mach 1 and 69 70 gt350s. When ford and Shelby parted ways. All of the shelby goodies were removed at shelby before returning back to ford. So the engines didn't have an intake on them. So the remaining cars left had those ex manifolds installed. I bet you had the shelby shifter knob left on the shifter. Round tan know with white inlay and blue racing stripe. The guy responsible for removing those parts forgot about those. I had a 69 Indian fire red Windsor Mach 1. With the Gt interior. Simulated wood grain. Red inlays in carpet and seats clock above glove compartment. Lay down back seat. It had the top loader an a N Case 31 spline Detroit locker rear with 3.91 gears. So it had the GT and DragPak options. With a small block. No pwr steering but had front disc's. I had staggered quad shocks on the rear. From factory. Never seen before. For only being 290hp. It was faster than my 66 390 cyclone. And my 72 455 H.O. Trans Am. They were nibble lil performers. I'd say that were 335 hp like big blocks #s. 428s were closer to 375 or more hp. I allowed my parents to sell to help with their finances after a work accident shattered my dad's foot and couldn't work. I want to say I regret ever doing but how can I when it went to help my family. Ya kno. That 72 T/A was my graduation present from high school from my parents. 5200 out of 72000 69 fastback stangs were Mach 1s Kevin Marty didn't put out reports when I owned or I could tell you better the #s on mine. Was told by build sheet it was 1 of 5200 manufactured in 69. It had the tow hook placement the rings at all 4 corners still installed too. Weren't removed at dealership after delivery. It only had 33000 miles on it when I traded my Lincoln mark IV for it. Guy was all over that Lincoln and didn't think twice about trading. I was over the moon that he did. I was 22 at the time. Lincoln were for old dudes not fresh out of military men. LOL. A few ranchero and torino GTs arrived with a 4bbl Windsor also. But very few. And we're gone in 70 because 4bbl 351s were clevelands. So the only car in 1970 that had a 4bbl window was a shelby gt350. And it was a retitled 1969 that wasn't sold and shelby with help from government were allowed to retitle

The police interceptor was rated at 345 hp with 2 barrel heads with small valves. The cobra jet was realistically closer to or just above 400 actual Hp. 428 Cj has basically low riser 427 heads on it. The police interceptor had mass torque when compared to the cobra jet. Small ports and a short first geared automatic pulling 4,500 lb police car to the 700 ft was comparable to any muscle car back then. But the police cars power died off once it shifted into 3rd gear with a 3.00 rear gear. Still ran a 14.90 ET. 2barrel heads with Box exhaust 3.00 rear gear and 4,500 lbs. The short block on a police interceptor was all cobra jet. Just change the heads and manifold. Put cobra jet exhaust on or headers. And put a Holley 735 or 780 vac on it. And it was a Cobra Jetty. The police 2 barrel stopped breathing around 4,000 rpm. I owned a 69 police car myself. And embarrassed a lot of street racers with it. If they were in front of me in a race. Most the time it was 300 ft before the finish line. On average. I could get out of the hole on them by about 100 ft. They were all shocked that car launched that fast and that hard. But all the short comings I listed about this car is what held it back from smoking most of them. The funny thing was. That 428 would turn some high rpm’s like a small block does. It was surprising to say the least. The same car Charles Mason got hauled if to jail in. 😂 so they could make a quick get away. 😆 TASCA put the combo together originally. But the short CJ came from the police package 428. The automatic was a heavy duty C6 with a short wide ratio gear box, big servo and extra clutch packs for police duty. Same tranny they put in the CJ mustangs with automatics.

I had a 69 .5 . Build date 6/6/69 . Nothing ever was right and I thought it was semi custom. It wasn't . Before I sold it . The build was requested from the factory. It turns out it was a Super CJ. It had every option . It even has the GT package on top of being a Mach 1 . I had a council that had my oil pressure / amp and seat buckle holders and a red and blue light on the council that lit up every time you hit the brake pedal. There was a chrome snake left side of my clock. I had the lowest gears with the drag pack. The only thing I had was traction bars. The rims were chrome W/ GT covers and pop out GT fuel cap . I had it at Ford and they said it had everything. There was I thought something about a Black and white TV that could go between the front seats. I also had two horses in the front grill . It was Black with red interior. I had the adjustable steering wheel. Here's my take on the car . It's just a car. I'm a dirt biker and wanted a Porsche . I was talked into buying it so I did. Nothing heavy and it was . The only thing that got me was watching Bullet and Steve McQueen. That Mustang had no clue what was going to happen to it. I did everything Steve did and more. The pluses were the brakes. I replaced the shifter right away.to a Hurst comp plus. I put Shelby diamond backs on radial TAs. I'm not sure the rubber was the best decision, should've went Good year or something Italian. The other plus was it was reliable. I found out later because of the serious bottom I didn't use second gear . Taller it might not have broke loose so easy. I'm thinking the CJ in this video was taller. The Boss broke and I'd choose the CJ over the Boss. I noticed the pins weren't in and that hood shook at about 80. I tried to make it handle and pushed it to the limits. I only got crazy in it alone. After the new rubber I took it out on a back road at 2:00 in the morning after a light rain . The road had two nice bends. The first bend I was at about 80 and the second at about 90 I just touched the pedal and it broke. I went off the road took off my right front rubber and almost hit a telephone pole. The car was very front heavy and everything spun around it . Also any upgrade and I'd bash the oil pan, many times. To get the car to turn I'd come up hard to to corner and punch the brakes until I was about half way through and hit the pedal. No CJ was going full through. My toughest races on the road , which it totally reckless were with small displacement cars . They knew the weakness and no shame in losing to a CJ. At about 2:00 in the morning again I picked up a Porsche Carrera. I think it was non turbo but it moved. We were on a highway with regulated speed at 55. He couldn't get past me but he stayed a car length on my left . We got past the bends and the road straightened out but there was a small hill and patchy pavement. I put the pedal to the floor. The car lifted off the road and all four tires chirped three times before the Mustang straighten out. I've was so scared I could taste steel . I'm not sure but I slowed down and he gave me the thumbs up. Maybe for just keeping my car on the road. I think he could've taken me , because my car could barely make it over 115. It was screaming and the motor felt like it was coming apart . I sold it with no regrets I got everything out of it and didn't kill myself. I watched the girl driving and she's more beautiful than the car ,but very nice package. Bare foot on the clutch is also very impressive . Great video but I have to vote on the CJ and always on the driver 😜❗

    • @carolnelson9269
      @carolnelson9269 Рік тому

You might want to look at any FE powered mid-sized car, not just a 428 CJ/SCJ powered car (Fairlane, Mustang, or Torino) before you talk about spark plug changes. They can be interesting and not a lot of fun.
Boss 429 engines have the plugs just about in the center of the valve covers, and look to be less of a hassle. Headers are another story.
But take a Boss 429 and slap a set of headers and a true dual exhaust and yank the 735 cfm Holley for say an 850 Holley along with some 4.30 gears in a locker; and you have a horse of a different color. Ford deliberately detuned them for insurance purposes. Let that engine breath and you will be amazed at what it can do.

I have to give credit to the girl clutching the CJ bare footed. Not many girls could handle just letting out the clutch and could shift . My car was an SCJ and maybe the clutch was bigger and the compression higher but if you didn't let the clutch out right it shut down. Two more times and the battery would be dead . I had a rule if you couldn't get the clutch out the second time you were done. I was going out skinny little girl who had ridden in my many times and even with it not moving 😜 and one night in front of guys that couldn't let the clutch out she said " I can start it and drive it " I told her the rule . She said" Okay then let me try " Buddies if mine said " You you can't do it Becky " I thought she couldn't but said Okay . She got in and started it and let the clutch out like she drove it a hundred times . She also shifted it perfectly. I have three daughters and unfortunately not from Becky, but they all had shifts on their first cars . Guys don't doubt them . I really believe their rhythm is better ,and my girls prefer sticks over auto's. The clutch in the video although does seem soft . I really never liked the Hurst "Tee" and stayed with the white ball that came with my Hurst . To me it's the best . There was a girl years ago that drove a bright yellow 340 AAR six pack. On the back she had a sticker that said " If you can beat me you can eat me ":Oh how I tried to race her . I would've done everything to win but no disrespect if I did. She was a very good driver and I never heard of anyone who beat her. 😜❗

I didn't see one of the other options I had in my Mustang that really helped me and the performance was the factory 8 Trac AM FM system . To get all the performance out of it you had to have Deep purple " Highway Star " lined up for every race . It helped keeping you from hearing the over rev of the motor and helped your timing shifting. Defiant and definite edge . Stone's were good too but a lot of really bad things happened to the car when played them . " All down the line " was a good / bad one. 😎

I knew many guys that never let their girlfriends even sit in the front seat . Many never respected them when they got crazy behind the wheel. Women even if they don't drive have an intuition when it's dangerous. I'd hear guys laugh about how they freaked out their girlfriends. Not funny to me at all . If anyone isn't comfortable ,Stop. I was going out with this girl who never rode in my car . There was this nice merge on to the highway and I just got it up to speed fast. She freaked out and told me to let her out . I was totally surprised and apologized. She said her friend was paralyzed when her boyfriend street racing rolled a GTO. That too many times . A true man passes on a race instead of putting your ego ahead of safety.. A couple things to mention is the Tee handle on the stick. I'd lose that for the plastic ball it came with. The ball is more forgiving and palming it is easier. I saw there were no hood pins . It needs them. I put a couple small master locks to prevent the scoop from theft . If the car has the optional door from the trunk, bolt it shut. I was going to put a 1/4 " steel plate to permanently close it. Getting hit from the rear could be deadly . The fuel is just a rubber hose from the cap . The steel would add some needed rear weight. Respect and safety go together and no race is worth winning without that . 😎
