the first album I ever bought. I was at the mall, around 10 years old with my older brother and his best friend. His best friend gave me the money because he knew I loved Heaven Sent and Burning Like a Flame. Those were the 2 videos on MTV. I haven't heard the rest of the album but I grew to love every track.
Dokken one of my all time favorite metal bands. Lynch was a huge influence on my guitar playing. It's difficult for me to choose which album is their best. Sometimes I think Under lock and key is their best and other times I think Back for the attack is. I think Dokken were at their peak on Back for the attack and in terms of live performance as a band, they were at their peak between 1985-1987. Don sounded especially great between 1986-1987 live. Lynch in terms of guitar tone and playing, some of his best work and tone imo was on Back for he attack. Tooth and nail is also a great album. When heaven comes down, Tooth and nail, don't close your eyes, alone again, into the fire etc.. great songs. I love their debut album as well. Songs like "Nightrider" were underrated. Dysfunctional has pretty awesome solos by Lynch imo. I actually like this album even if it sounds way different. I would have ranked it a bit higher personally but you know to each their own. I kinda wish Don would have pushed his voice a bit more, do a few high notes here and there since he was still fully capable in 1994.
Getting into dokken, listening to the 24 song Apple Music playlist and been listening to it constantly. Want to start listening to complete albums so I thought I’d check out some rankings. I really trust your judgment so I was happy to see that you have a ranking! I’ll check out your top picks first!!! 👍
Hallo Brendon Nice ranking and Video as well 11. Shadow life 10. Dysfunctional 09. Broken bones 08. Long way home 07. Hell to pay 06. Breaking the chains 05. Erase the slate 04. Under lock and key 03. Lightning strikes again 02. Back for the attack 01. Tooth and nail Have a nice day and greetings from Heiko
I could never get enough of Dokken. Top five band for me. George is a monster player and Don was such a different type singer for a hard rock/heavy metal band. So melodic, yet heavy. I struggle to rank these albums, but a gun to my head top five would probably be 1. Tooth And Nail 2. Back For The Attack 3. Under Lock And Key 4. Lightning Strikes Again 5. Breaking The Chains. All of these are incredibly strong records and if you ask me tomorrow the ranking might be completely different. For people who haven’t heard Lightning Strikes Again or Up From The Ashes, which qualifies under the Don Dokken solo album category, GET AHOLD OF THOSE. They are amazing hard rock records. Great songs top to bottom. Don’s voice struggles at times, but it does nothing to diminish the strength of those songs. Great ranking and video, Brendon.
Under Lock And Key is definitely my #1 and not to mention, is in my Top 15 Metal albums of all time. Sir I'd like to see your take on Judas Priest's discography!
1. Don Dokken - Up from the Ashes 2 (1). Tooth and Nail 3. (2). Back for the Attack 4. (3). Under Lock and Key 5. (4). Breaking the Chains 6. (5). Lightning Strikes Again That's how I see this.
Dokken is one of my all time favorite bands. Enjoyed this ranking 👍. We’re pretty close in our top albums. My top 5 are: 1. Back For The Attack ( WEA remaster) 2. Under Lock and Key (rock candy remaster) 3. Beast from The East (rock candy remaster) not a studio album but a great show and there’s a studio track so… 4. Lightning Strikes Again 5. Tooth and Nail (rock candy remaster) Back For The Attack starts with one of their heaviest tracks and is almost like a greatest hits for me. Production is great and I don’t skip any songs. Rockin’ with Dokken!
Kiss of death is one of their best songs. I usually prefer the non-remastered versions though especially for songs like Kiss of death, you can hear Don's screams better on the non-remastered in fact
Kudos for shining the light on Up from the Ashes what an overlooked gem. John Norum is an absolute monster player maybe my favorite from the glam metal era.
Good call, capn! Will never forget yelling at JN from the side of the stage on the UFTA tour while he was noodling with his guitars killing time before their set. Would love to tell you he looked up, smiled, handed us one of his guitars, or threw us a pick, but no such luck. The memory of that concert and getting the chance to yell at John Norum when you've bought just about everything that has his name on it, well, that's priceless. lol
I have Shadowlife and Hell to Pay as my bottom two as well. I have dysfunctional much higher. It has a bluesy sound to it and a groove that really like. My top two are back for the attack #2 and Under lock and key #1. Great ranking as always Brendon.
Seems lots of people liked Dysfunctional more than me as it’s much higher in people’s lists. It just never clicked for me. Maybe because it didn’t sound like Don solo or Dokken proper. But also the time frame being 1995. I actually prefer the original 1994 self titled version of the album over 1995’s Dysfunction, see link for comparison if you’re interested ua-cam.com/video/6M7yFQOGsfo/v-deo.html
So , of all the hair metal I enjoyed as a 12 year old kid in 89 , all the head bangers ball I stayed up and watched , Dokken is a band I never bought . I liked the Nightmare Elm St thing , but I literally need to rediscover / discover them . Thanks for the road map .
Great ranking video! 🤘🏻 I might have to tackle this one day, but it’s hard to rank the first four albums. I agree with your #11 and no surprise to me to see Lightning Strikes Again ranked so high. That album is fantastic!
Hi Brendon!! i really enjoy this ranking videos, as i told you Dokken is one of my favorite bans from the LA's 80 rock scene. to me the first four release are all soild efforts, but had to agree Lightning Strikes Again is an awesome return to form, they got back that classic Dokken sound thanks to Jon Levin..... Btw, had no idea John Norum was part of the band, knew he played on Don's solo record..... cheers and be well
Loving these ranking albums! Agree with you on most of the Dokken album positions here. I agree Lightning Strikes Again is Right up there with the classic stuff. Any chance of a Tesla album ranking? Thanks!
Hmmmm.....My top 3 would have shuffled a bit. 3. Back for the Attack 2. Tooth and Nail 1. Under Lock and Key Rest of your list seems spot on... However, I would have included Up From the Ashes in the top 5 as well.
I like it for what it is but more into it for the new song and the acoustic tracks. But even the new song was pretty underwhelming. So in all I’m not screaming for a reunion. I like the current line up just fine.
Hi Brendon, I enjoyed your ranking. Will you be doing a ranking for L.A. Guns? Cocked and Loaded for me would be the best, but Waking the Dead, Tales from the Strip, Hollywood Vampires and L.A. Guns would feature in my Top 5. I believe they have a new album due out later in the year 🙂
I’ve thought about doing a ranking but they have so many albums sometimes two at a time with different line ups. Not quite sure how to organize those and rank them when they’re really two separate bands. Great White has the same issue. But I’ll give it some thought.
@@BrendonSnyder I agree. If it were to focus on just the 'classic line up only' then several albums would have to be missed out such as the one with Jizzy Pearl or ones that featured Phil Lewis without Tracii Guns. And you're right about albums coming out at the same time. The Devil You Know and Renegades came out one after another. It will become like a competition soon between the two line-ups. But I'm not complaining as it gives us more music to enjoy. I still have to get Renegades with Kurt frohlich on vocals. I remember you gave it a positive review so I plan to get it.
These ranking videos are all very interesting and Dokken is one band I have interest in listening to, as I only know the songs ‘Alone Again’ and ‘Breaking The Chains’ and I think they are really good songs and I do enjoy them, so I have interest in listening to the others once I will get an album or two from them. Can I request you to do a ranking of all the Bon Jovi albums including the Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora solo albums too? And maybe do a ranking of Iron Maiden as well?
Really interesting descriptions and opinions you hold on this particular ranking.I must check out Lightning Strikes Again...I confess I shamefully don't know it! The top 3 are a pretty faultless trio in any discography. Kiss of Death & Into The Fire hit high in my all timer metal tracks - infact Into the Fire is one of my top 3 ever tracks by any band. George Lynch is unbelievable. I seem to like Breaking the Chains a bit more than you -despite it's 5th place on yours also.
Whaaat?!? No Japanese release of Beast From The East with limited edition live version of Standing In The Shadows? Including the sonic foreshadowing masterpiece "Just Walk Away?" One of the coolest videos of all time??? Where Mr. Scary grabs such serious tone from a hollow body in the intro even wild waterfowl stop and watch mesmerized? Whatt? What has society come to. lol Might have to go watch some of the french KISS kids videos to get some faith in humanity back. Maybe the youth can save us while there's still time. lol Good work, mate! Rock on!!!
@@BrendonSnyder Then we petition for a rules change! lol Just Walk Away ran circles around 1/2 the hair metal ballads. Which, like, there were a lot of good ones. And don't get us wrong. We loved seeing the Madonna wanna bees having their brains get rewired watching Reb levitate that whammy in Heartbreak, cuz they all knew hair metal was where it was at, it was obvious. But STILL (lol), you could put Just Walk Away on a cd 4 times, call it an EP, and it would be one of the best albums of the genre. lol In fact, we're going to go do that right now. Watch your mailbox. When you see an Amazon delivery van pull up and the driver jumps out with an envelope in tiger stripes with reverse head stock, the album of the year was just delivered. lol Awesome work, friend. Keep it up! Keep the rock goin!i
Great vid. Love most of the stuff the band has put out through the years except Shadowlife which George totally ranked on purpose in an effort to destroy the band. I remember reading an interview with Don a few years after the album’s release saying as much and pointing out that it is the only album from the band to not have the band logo on it.
I generally agree with your picks on this one. After "Dysfunctional", I didn't listen to as much material from Dokken as I normally did. But "Lightning Strikes Again" was indeed a return to form. Never checked out "Broken Bones", but I'll give it a listen some time soon. My #1 and #2 are too close to call, as are my #3 and #4. The song titled "Back for the Attack" should've been on the same-titled album; the only CD release I know that has it is a greatest hits package released only in Japan. To be fair, I'll only list my Top 5. 1. Under Lock and Key ("Unchain the Night" is my overall favorite Dokken track.) 2. Tooth And Nail 3. Back for the Attack 4. Breaking the Chains 5. Lightning Strikes Again
Great video! But aren´t you missing Dokken's 1983 debut album "Breaking The Chains"? It's a great record! My personal top 5: 1-Under Lock And Key 2-Tooth And Nail 3-Back For The Attack 4-Breaking The Chains 5-Lightning Strikes Again
Brendon, I know you collect CD’s but the original Carrere vinyl version of Breaking The Chains is far superior to the Elektra rerelease. As far as I know, never had a CD release and was actually issued as Don Dokken album on the spine. Well worth getting a copy….keep up the good work!!
I agree the original 1981 solo album release is superior and I did a video to that effect comparing the two albums, see link if you’re interested ua-cam.com/video/IDXCtsau_SQ/v-deo.html
I’ve thought of doing one for Deep Purple, but to be honest they have too many albums to do in one video and to do them justice. But they’re in my list and maybe I’ll break the ranking down to something like the Richie Blackmore years, etc.
11. Broken Bones 10. Lightning 09. Shadowlife 08. Hell To Pay 07. Dysfunctional 06. Long Way Home 05. Erase The Slate 04. Breaking The Chains 03. Under Lock And Key 02. Back For The Attack 01. Tooth And Nail
Realisticly, I should've put Shadowlife at 11 but to be honest I haven't liked any Dokken post-Hell To Pay. This is mostly due to Don's deteriorating vocals. I want so much to like them and I do revisit them from time to time but my opinion hasn't changed. Erase The Slate and Long Way Home, I flip flop on. Sometimes I prefer Erase The Slate, other times Long Way Home.
I had a Dream Warriors cassingle that had the actual song "Back for the Attack" which for some reason was not included on the album. Sad as it's also a great song.
Beast from the east is my favourite live album ever believe it or not. I do pretty much agree with your ranking too. Great band, shame Don lost his voice as bad as he did and George is an idiot.
I’m fine that Don can’t hit the high notes anymore. But he still sounds good in the lower registers. George just likes doing new things and isn’t content with one project. Still it would be nice if he could work with Don and do all his other projects too.
@@BrendonSnyder yeah I still enjoy the albums like broken bones where Don has a poor voice. Just live is..... Hard to take. Don always seems to get flak for being difficult or whatever but I think George is the issue and I think George hates that the band is dokken not lynch. Just my opinion. Some of lynch is OK (debut lynch mob is stunning) but I struggle with allot of his stuff. Do u have a fave live album? Maybe a vid on top 5 live albums?
True story - Sitting at home thinking I need to go subscribe to Brendon Snyder. Watched a few videos and there's all kinds of stuff I need to check out. Also thought, I wonder if he ranked Dokken's albums. Load UA-cam - top line of my feed. This kind of thing happens all the time... when I say it aloud. I must be chipped.
"Shadowlife" is to Dokken as "Smoke This" is to Lynch Mob. I know it's the worst album, and I don't even listen to non-Lynch era Dokken. But, I rate Dysfunctional much higher (just my personal taste) because Lynch's playing is so good. Different sure-more bluesy, but still great.
Dusty, you are the man. Hole In My Head was amazing, probably had the Beatles sitting up in their graves goin who wha wawazzat. Mr. Scary grabbed some monster tone in that tune. A favorite. And Too High To Fly, forgittaboutit. Decided couple of years ago after 35 years of metal, think it might just be my favorite song of all time. Wildside, very cool. Saints and Sinners, lookout. But THTF, game over. Watching the difference between GL in the live video here on YT and Reb's take from the DVD is a riot. Two different worlds, but awesome all the same.
As a collector, I have 2 different versions of Smoke This, but its pretty bad, a strange attempt at nu metal or something. Still some interesting playing from Lynch though. He kinda struggled until he got Oni back on vocals.
We asked Mick about the fact that the Japanese release had bongos in Too High but not the States version. He said they were there, just a different mix. Now, we love Mick, but we're diggin the tune with just him bangin on the skins, so I dunnooo.... lol And how cool is it that his brother is playing. One of the coolest things in all of rockdom. John Bonham's son playing like a beast, well, it's kind of in his DNA. But Mick's bro saying, hey man, got this, hold my beer, well, that's just too cool.
Wow, i couldnt disagree with some of this list. Shadow Life, Dysfunctional, and especially Erase the Slate are wayyy to low. ETS is just as good as any of the classic lynch albums. I actually have ETS at #3 behind BFTA and TN. Shadow Life and Dysfunctional are way better musically than anything that came after ETS.
Shadowlife not a good album do like all three albums with Jon Levin better than breaking the chains, and erase the slate and dysfunctional as well, but my favorite album is tied back from the attack, and under lock And key, tooth and nail #2 long way home would be 2nd to last for me
Under lock and key first dokken I owned got the alarm yes Duran Duran and Coldplay preordered for Oct but have to cut down because I think the beatles let it be comes out Oct fifteenth gma played part of a clip from billy idol sounds really good I was shocked they showed it it's usually Bieber BTS Taylor swift Beyonce etc so it was nice to see a rocker getting some airtime
Nah, that was just all of us fans trying to figure out what the heck the legend was doin on those strings. There was no red bull back then, you had to have SOMETHIN to keep up with the Lynch. Thankfully he slowed it down a little for Wicked Sensation. lol Which, buy the way, Mr. Snyder. Shouldn't WS get at least on honorable mention place on the list? It did have 1/2 of Dokken on it, after all. Just like 1/2 of the list. lol
Dokken without George...is NOT Dokken and George without Don is NOT Dokken! Nothing lasts forever, but it was dam great...not like the crap music since the mid 90's...
I was never into Dokken and just recently after multiple pushes from a guitar playing friend, I revisited their discography. I have to say, the music is pretty awesome, but I have confirmed I cannot stand Don Dokken at all. His voice is annoying to my ears.
5 - Erase The Slate
4 - Back For The Attack
3 - Breaking The Chains
2 - Tooth And Nail
1 - Under Lock And Key
Back For The Attack is one of my favourite albums of all time, superb
Yessir! Back For The Attack crushes any other Dokken album - it is STELLAR!

Back For The Attack rocks harder, burns brighter and is absolutely littered with molten gems, top to bottom! 🎸🎸🎸

Great video! But aren´t you missing Dokken's 1983 debut album "Breaking The Chains"? It's a great record! My personal top 5:
1-Under Lock And Key
2-Tooth And Nail
3-Back For The Attack
4-Breaking The Chains
5-Lightning Strikes Again
You should watch the video a little closer, it’s there.
Brendon, I know you collect CD’s but the original Carrere vinyl version of Breaking The Chains is far superior to the Elektra rerelease. As far as I know, never had a CD release and was actually issued as Don Dokken album on the spine. Well worth getting a copy….keep up the good work!!
I agree the original 1981 solo album release is superior and I did a video to that effect comparing the two albums, see link if you’re interested ua-cam.com/video/IDXCtsau_SQ/v-deo.html
very underated band i think
damn right 😁
Under lock and key is number 1 for me Tooth and nail number 2 i like all Dokken albums except for Shadowlife looking forward to the new album
I’m excited for the new album as well. The release date can’t get here fast enough!
Hi Brendon couldn't rank dokken any better than that I would rank them the same 👍👍🤟
Guitarist Billy White played most of the leads on "Up from the ashes" he's kind of the unsung hero on that album imo.
Both Billy and John Norum are amazing!
George has his own unique style and phrasings. There was an edge and attack to the melodies. that no other axemen could match!
IDK…current guitarist Jon Levin does a really great job.
@@BrendonSnyder You must be the typ music blind who listens to wutever is the new thing....ignorance is bliss
Back For The Attack
Tooth & Nail
Under Lock & Key
Beast From The East
Breaking The Chains
...That's it.
Dysfunctional is a really good album. I rank that as no.2 and Under Lock And Key no.1
Seems like a lot of people really enjoy Dysfunctional. It just never clicked for me.
What ranking the DEEP PURPLE albums?
I’ve thought of doing one for Deep Purple, but to be honest they have too many albums to do in one video and to do them justice. But they’re in my list and maybe I’ll break the ranking down to something like the Richie Blackmore years, etc.
Havent got them all but tooth and nail, under lock and key and back for attack the best, anyone cud b no. 1
11. Broken Bones
10. Lightning
09. Shadowlife
08. Hell To Pay
07. Dysfunctional
06. Long Way Home
05. Erase The Slate
04. Breaking The Chains
03. Under Lock And Key
02. Back For The Attack
Sometimes I prefer Erase The Slate, other times Long Way Home.
first 3 for me, under lock,
tooth, back for the 😎
Heck yeah
Now to find the Ratt ranking
I just wish that Don Dokken had at least his late 1990s voice on lightning strikes again.
I hear you but I'm just glad he is still releasing new music. Albeit he has slowed down over the years and doesn't release as much.
Are you related to Dee Snider?
Haha…I wish! No and the last name is spelled different.
dysfunctional called
in Japan dokken 1994,
also a Japan version
of dysfunctional 😃
In the description I provide a link to my comparison of the two different versions. See link if interested ua-cam.com/video/6M7yFQOGsfo/v-deo.html
There are also two versions of Breaking The Chains. See link got my comparison of those two as well ua-cam.com/video/IDXCtsau_SQ/v-deo.html
Hell to pay I like and dysfunction didn't do bad and I think erase the slate is a very good album
A ranking I can't do lol .I don't have an album after 1985.
back for the attack is well 🎸
Shadowlife not a good album do like all three albums with Jon Levin better than breaking the chains, and erase the slate and dysfunctional as well, but my favorite album is tied back from the attack, and under lock And key, tooth and nail #2 long way home would be 2nd to last for me
never really got into this band.no particular reason, just one of those things lol
You forgot the best album....Breaking the chains...oh my god
Maybe watch the whole video next time before commenting, it’s there. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
I don't consider Dokken a "glam" metal band at all. Maybe they had that look for a brief minute but their riffs are way too heavy to match the image.
I only like Dokken's first four albums
That’s too bad. They band has so much to offer. You should at least check out Don’s solo album Up From The Ashes.
Idk why everyone has shadowlife last I thought it was badass
It’s not a bad album but in terms of Dokken albums there are much better ones than Shadowlife.
@@BrendonSnyder do u ever get first pressings
Under lock and key first dokken I owned got the alarm yes Duran Duran and Coldplay preordered for Oct but have to cut down because I think the beatles let it be comes out Oct fifteenth gma played part of a clip from billy idol sounds really good I was shocked they showed it it's usually Bieber BTS Taylor swift Beyonce etc so it was nice to see a rocker getting some airtime
George Lynch's playing on BFTA is so unrelentingly, brutally amazing, I still can't believe he wasn't coked up to his eyeballs the entire time.
I have a different opinion.
I was never into Dokken and just recently after multiple pushes from a guitar playing friend, I revisited their discography. I have to say, the music is pretty awesome, but I have confirmed I cannot stand Don Dokken at all. His voice is annoying to my ears.
I know others who would agree. His voice never grabbed me.
@@qdaveq6597 We'll forward your comments. Signed, Dokken fan club. lol
Damn Don's voice; especially on Under lock and key and back for the attack is one of the major reasons why I love Dokken
