It's funny how nana is kind of an urban legend generator. He's also incredibly nice in his online interactions, which contrasts in such a stark way with his artwork.
My favorite 2008 pastime was searching "scary video" on youtube and going down a related video screamer rabbit hole for a couple of hours. If it had 3 stars or less it was probably a screamer. Also there were a ton of Beatles related docs on here back then that I cant seem to find anywhere.
All I did in 2008 was listening to ABBA music and watch an Apple Lisa 2 boot into MacOS 6.0.2 (or literally a promotion video for the Amiga 2000). Now I *do* actually *own* an Amiga 500, way past its prime, resurrected and cherished. I just need to figure out DPaint IV.
They also made that really unsettling video called ‘my house walk-through’ that a lot of people were talking about for a while. I think some big UA-camrs like Markiplier reacted to it. Nana/PiroPito certainly has a talent for the unsettling and surreal! Honestly when I realized username666 and the house walk through were made by the same channel it was a big “Oh yeah I remember that!!” moment.
I was wondering why something just felt so familiar. Something about the grimy vibes of both videos. Obviously I couldn’t pin it down until i saw this comment :)
Out of all their videos, outside of another UA-cam and username666, another that I remember is pokopkopikotan (I think that’s what it’s called) that stuff was disturbing
I'm glad to see you're getting more comfortable showing yourself onscreen! Also, I find it funny that "2008 UA-cam Culture" is one of the disclaimers at the start of the video. 🤣
Nationsquid returning to a creepypasta adjacent topic 😳. Excited for this throwback. Definitely one of the best internet horror videos to this day. Nana has real talent
Excited for this episode. Username666 really was the start of all these modern internet horror/creepy videos that we take for granted today. Also, I sometimes go back to watch it just to enjoy the 2006-2009 channel layout.
@DDFJ1230 It seems like such a lifetime ago when the star system was in place. It was how I first enjoyed UA-cam as a 12/13 year old kid watching those stick figures on crack videos lol.
I feel old. I was there, Gandalf. I was there 3000 years ago... When Nana uploaded the Username666 video. It's weird to think we've hit a point in time where we need an explanation and it's not just common knowledge that it was Nana who made the very fake urban legend.
Nana is a very underrated artist. His works are so fascinating and he definitely deserves the recognition he gained from username. His other works really shook me as a kid.
Honestly the first thing that should have tipped you off about the 4chan "lead" was how weirdly polite everyone sounded. Everyone knows nobody ever says anything on 4chan without insulting someone, cursing at them, or aggressively telling them to off themselves, especially for no reason at all, and doubly so if its OP.
A viewer descretion for " 2008 yt culture " is a must . I think any videos based on yt during this era should go through cencorship and eventually get graded .
Hey, Squid, really good video! Referring to the part about UA-cam pre-restricting offensive usernames: I think UA-cam actually did restrict "666." It seems likely for UA-cam to pre-restrict all of the offensive words that are only one word, and "666" would've been considered as one word. I don't think the old UA-cam would have wanted to be super limiting as to pre-restrict all possible offensive word combinations. Then, for an easy default, they used the "account suspended" message for all the pre-restricted words. Also, maybe back then, you couldn't have a username that was three characters?
Ah, urban legends and creepypastas are so fun! Surprisingly, I've never heard of Username666. I haven't looked at a lot from the early days of the internet, but perhaps I ought to because there's some really interesting stories. Even though/if they're fake, there's just something special about hearing them and pretending, just for a moment, that they're real, especially if it's an unsolved mystery sort of thing. One of my favorite urban legends is about the arcade game Polybius, which apparently gave weird symptoms to anyone who played it. I'm sure everyone's heard of it by now, though.
It's largely irrelevant to this video in particular, but I love that PiroPito has all this really great horror stuff and then...... an incredibly wholesome series of him playing Minecraft blind lmao.
oh THAT'S where I remember him from! I've been trying to figure that out for the entire video; I was about to go look him up! Those minecraft videos are awesome.
I'm very excited for this video about Username666. Usernmame666 is really the original of all horror or creepy things like ARG's and lots of other stuff like that, very happy that you'll be covering this.
Watching that Username666 video back in early youtube was an experience, loved that crazy shit back then, had been using the platform for a year or two by that point, so a "demonic" version of UA-cam was fascinating to me.
This video used to haunt my nightmares every night when i was a child. I always thought after watching the video that my computer would get infected and look like the one in the video
the screenshot at 11:00 with the person looking for a video essay on youtube is really interesting to me. someone in 2007 wanting to use youtube academically is weirdly cool EDIT: i commented this as i was watching the video, lmao nvm i guess
Around this time, I was only around 11 or 12, and nobody had ever told me about UA-cam. I would usually just find videos on Dailymotion. That fact, along with the fact that my time on the internet was limited by parental controls and a shared computer, I never got to experience the early UA-cam era. This stuff is nice; allowing me to see something I could have experienced at the time if things were different.
Great vid NationSquid! I love how thorough you are in your videos. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. :) I hope in the future you do a deep dive of some sort into Geocities and the culture that cultivated from it.
piropito/nana’s creations had always fascinated me despite the really scary videos he makes, but its surprisingly satisfying and comforting to watch. in username 666, the videos played in youtube (more like helltube), were actually some of his creations too. The first one was a video about demon baby dancing sessions, which were shortly uploaded after the video (username 666) was uploaded. The second one was a video that was uploaded just before the video was uploaded. the name of the videos are “Embryo” (for the dancing demon baby session one) and “gone” (the one playing with a tablet that can magically kill ants.) honestly, i love his creations and stuff. my favorite one is the embryo one. its weird and disturbing but honestly its kinda hilarious once you get used to it. he also posted on twitter, “How to make 666 texture” which was him making the texture or the background of the urban legend. sooooo basically im guessing that hes basically the creator of username 666 IF it wasnt an urban legend! :)
This whole thing reminds me of this story back around the late 2000s where this bungalo out at santa monica that just vanished over night. I remember seeing it on the news several times over a week or so, talking about its strange disappearance, until this construction company came out and was like 'yeah we bought the land and knocked the building down.' Apparently they were building a 8 story condo. Though the story i guess doesnt end there, as it was only just recently that i heard about how that very same condo hasnt been able to keep anyone in the building ever since its construction. It just kind of stays there, and people that move in, either commit suicide later, or just up and leave, or sometimes they outright go missing. Pretty fucked up shit ya know?
The worst part about me watching this video is that I hate horror, and I hate being scared, but I specifically sought out this video because I was intrigued. So I am currently terrified and on edge considering it is almost midnight as well.
I remember you used to make a video back in the day "Top 10 Creepypasta that no one talks about" any reason you took it down or any plans on bringing the concept back
Hi! That video ended up getting a false copyright strike back in 2019 (someone didn't like the review I left about their story despite it being positive) and I just made a lot of bad and frankly embarrassing decisions trying to get it back up. Nobody won in that situation haha. It's really too bad since that was my first ever video on this channel, but that's in the past and I am much happier with my content now!
The weirdest thing to me is seeing how short YT videos were, like everything was under 10 mins. Then they got longer and longer and tbh I don’t like investing in a video if it’s under 20 mins. And now Tiktok/Reels/Shorts have basically replaced the 2:55 long videos we used to watch. But they look way better.
Based on everything we've seen come out of this search, I think we already have our answer. We already know that there was a channel named 666 around the time the original video was uploaded, Wayback and plenty of experiences with the "account suspended page" proves that beyond any reasonable doubt. However, I'm pretty confident that that channel is not what the video was referencing. I mean PiroPito said himself that it was created for a film festival, I think we safely disregard any speculation that there really was some cursed or malware-infested channel out there that would make your browser satanic and destroy your computer, or at least if there was, it was a coincidence and completely unrelated. Also, PiroPito has made many other projects like Username 666 in the past, including Another UA-cam which essentially serves as a sequel to Username 666, highly recommend checking out if you haven't already btw. I think the original 666 channel more than likely was just some random dude on the internet who had an edgy since of humor, hence the spooky name. As for what got the channel terminated, it could have been anything. My guess is that it was either some old, obscure skits that people found offensive and reported to UA-cam, or the person was pirating or uploading pirated movies and UA-cam stopped it. Of course, there is always a chance that there really was something sinister on that channel similar to Hells Gate or full stop punctuation type stuff. I just don't find that to be very likely, even if it is still possible. All in all, there's my take on the matter. Just some edgy guy who was a bit too much of a pain in UA-cam's ass so they shut it down. However, there's no way to know 100% for sure so I could be totally wrong on that. Up to you to agree or disagree.
I found out about this around 2013-2014. There was actually some other "username666" that had something very similar to it that was real, but not quite the same. Like a duplicate channel kind of thing. I used to use it to scare my friends by loading it up on the school computers. I can't remember the exact details, but it did exist. Not malware obviously, but still interesting to note.
12:23 this is HILARIOUS lmao. anyway, i absolutely love the topics you cover on your channel, its like kinda niche and im so glad somebody makes this stuff.
12:48 that picture looks like it may be from Narbacular Drop, aka the “original Portal” (this is also the game that essentially gave us the Portal series)
i remember back in summer break of 2022, when i saw a youtuber cover the "watc" url thing. i decided to test it out myself and was baffled to find out it was real. good to know how it was made!
Prop to NationSquid, who was able to notice that the TINY 2007.12.19 date on the thumbnail. Ngl, I'd have been ignore it without noticing, great video btw!!
LMAO Of course this originated from Nico Nico Douga. Thats so funny For those who doesnt know, Nico Nico Douga is basically UA-cam for Japan. Its also a heaven for super talented people If you need a comparison, Nico Nico Douga users' skills from 2006 are comparable to UA-camrs nowadays
Man, this brings me back. Huge fan of Nana's ant videos too. Seeing old youtube really made me sad tho. Custom background, if you had partner program you could have a custom subscribe button. So much morr personality. Also I miss when you could use gifs as your channel icon and background.
There was _one_ article describing the film that said it's _like_ the train is coming right toward you, the stories about mass panic (as with similar mass panic about people thinking war of the worlds was a news broadcast) were typical old-media fear-mongering.
In one of the thumbnails, you see Yamato from Naruto Shippuden, which started airing in Feb 15, 2007. I can't tell which episode it is exactly since it isn't that clear. Yamato was revealed in episode 34, season 1, which aired in Japan on November 15, 2007 so this video could've taken place around or a bit after that date. Or it's not Yamato and it just looks really similar.
PiroPito does an amazong job covering sensitive topics in the form of horror. Username666 doesn’t have anything to do with this, but MY GOD did some videos do so goddamn good at topics such as sexual harassment, abuse, and targeted hate, all in tiny animations.
Im confused, Has No one else ever access Username666's channel? I did, can't remember if there was a virus or not, but I do remember refreshing the page several times and the page's appearance, this video that kept looping freaked me out a lot as a kid. I made a comment on the channel directly(which you could do back then) saying something like "if this is a joke its not funny" or something along those lines, someone replied back "just a joke get over it!" It was definitely real. My sister who's much younger then me mentioned it as an "urban legend". I kind of looked her and said, " That's no urban legend, its legit." She didn't believe me. Kind of wonder if I stepped into some type of Mandela effect alternate reality or something.

Legends say that if u use code 666 in your factory checkout you get a 100% discount
Be right back gonna make a trip to Costco!
@@nationsquidyooo
I love nana's horror stuff so much, the scary but creativeness of each video he makes is just wow.
YES! Nothing like an old internet mystery video from nationsquid.
this is going to be extremely bonkers
I found out about this around 2013-2014. There was actually some other "username666" that had something very similar to it that was real, but not quite the same. Like a duplicate channel kind of thing. I used to use it to scare my friends by loading it up on the school computers. I can't remember the exact details, but it did exist. Not malware obviously, but still interesting to note.
0:01 OH NOES, NOT 2008 UA-cam Culture
NOOO THATS HORRIBLE 😂😂😂
LOOLS😂😂😂GET REKT
this was the first video i watch on youtube that left me without sleep for that night
Is that a sub shaker???

Is
ADORABLEEEE
The jump scare at the beginning almost made me drop my phone on the floor. 0-0
12:23 this is HILARIOUS lmao. anyway, i absolutely love the topics you cover on your channel, its like kinda niche and im so glad somebody makes this stuff.
I like your adaptation of what username:666 would look like in real-time, great job.
The research is also on point. I really like this video!
👍👍👍
nana’s actually the sweetest person ever, despite his art, he’s really kind
I've heard of this happening on typosquatted versions of UA-cam, which may be part of the story.
like youtubr or yputube?
12:48 that picture looks like it may be from Narbacular Drop, aka the “original Portal” (this is also the game that essentially gave us the Portal series)
Watched it as a kid and i was terrified for 2 weeks and i was scared of watching UA-cam
For something made in a month, it's incredibly well made!
i love this man's desktop appearences, they are full of eastereggs
i like how his videos have been getting more goofy and fun as of late
The page refresh sound, holyyy I haven't heard it in forever
i remember back in summer break of 2022, when i saw a youtuber cover the "watc" url thing. i decided to test it out myself and was baffled to find out it was real. good to know how it was made!
6:23 to skip sponsorship
Ty
2008 UA-cam
Sends shivers down my spine
Prop to NationSquid, who was able to notice that the TINY 2007.12.19 date on the thumbnail.
Ngl, I'd have been ignore it without noticing, great video btw!!
LMAO Of course this originated from Nico Nico Douga. Thats so funny
For those who doesnt know, Nico Nico Douga is basically UA-cam for Japan. Its also a heaven for super talented people
If you need a comparison, Nico Nico Douga users' skills from 2006 are comparable to UA-camrs nowadays
0:13 my immortal chapter 4 LMAO
I WAS GONNA SAY THIS 😭
Man, this brings me back. Huge fan of Nana's ant videos too.
Seeing old youtube really made me sad tho. Custom background, if you had partner program you could have a custom subscribe button. So much morr personality. Also I miss when you could use gifs as your channel icon and background.
this is going to be SOOOO good i can already tellll!!! ❤
UA-cam was actually horrifying before 2012.
Nice :D!
How the hell do you have 1.44m subs and verified but 1 vid
This feels like a return to the Freaky 5. Love the new content man!
There was _one_ article describing the film that said it's _like_ the train is coming right toward you, the stories about mass panic (as with similar mass panic about people thinking war of the worlds was a news broadcast) were typical old-media fear-mongering.
Ngl nationsquid was my favorite 2006 youtuber
31:19 USE THE PHYSICAL POWER BUTTON AND HOLD IT AND DONT LET IT GO and then it shuts down without the os’s permission
Bro the unskipable hello fresh ad was evil 😔
In one of the thumbnails, you see Yamato from Naruto Shippuden, which started airing in Feb 15, 2007. I can't tell which episode it is exactly since it isn't that clear.
Yamato was revealed in episode 34, season 1, which aired in Japan on November 15, 2007 so this video could've taken place around or a bit after that date.
Or it's not Yamato and it just looks really similar.
I remember Username666. It's amazing to see how much modern-day youtube horror has evolved since then.
She is true.
I remember seeing this video, checking the channel after mustering the courage, and seeing it was suspended. Awesome upload.
just found out that video was uploaded on my birthday
