I consider them the catalyst for a lot of modern meme culture. They arent as popular as before but theres some YTPers still around. The community is more niche now I think but the impact it had on the internet is tremendous
It makes me sad that I never got to experience old UA-cam. The only place where I could access the internet back in those days was at my school's computer lab, and they had the site blocked. I could play flash games though so at least I had that.
I really like how you talk about things that aren't very well known or talked about very much. I feel like I'm learning something new every time I come to this channel. Props to you NationSquid!
I sadly don't have any memories of this event, but the names and imagery in this video still gave me a nostalgia rush for what I consider to be UA-cam's golden age. As a dirt poor college kid at the time, I was an active member in the UA-cam Poop community, happily watched various movies that users would upload in low image quality segments (and if I liked the movie well enough, I would seek out a legit physical copy).
Seeing that old UA-cam layout (used to have a channel in 2007) takes me back. Back when UA-cam shorts didn't exist, and money hungry ads and sponsorships didn't take over. Good times, good times. And I remember that time. My old channel and UA-cam Poop videos were affected, and it really freaked me out. Not knowing what was going on.
Definitely wasn't expecting to see a video covering this topic, let alone be mentioned in it, haha! It definitely made a big stir at the time, and I recall specifically asking the person who was behind all this to change the thumbnails of some videos on my channel. Mostly as a way to validate that this was indeed the person behind the hack. Sure enough, moments later, they were changed, and I've kept them as they are to this day. I remember testing a bunch of stuff out to see if I could figure out the exploit as well, in retrospect I think it must have been some form of authentication bypass specifically for the part of UA-cam that handles partner thumbnail uploading. Essentially uploading a new thumbnail for one of your existing videos, but managing to provide the ID of another video somewhere in the process. If the hack would have provided full account access, I'm certain it would have resulted in far more than just thumbnails being changed. Never managed to figure it out, but it was still mindblowing to see something like that happening in real-time. Thanks for preserving and documenting this niche internet event for future generations, really. you might laugh at me, but this video made me tear up and cry, i mean, look at how The Internet and its people were so simple and fun, they all saw a hack going on UA-cam and they just laughed it off and the hacker himself didnt do something horrible, and how the old UA-cam UI was, the old content, MAN this stuff is just so touching, for a person like me who started using The Internet in 2010 (at 3 years old) i really want to go back to that era, i envy yet at the same time feel happy to everyone who attended that beautiful era of The Internet.
I remember when this happened. I was 12 and for some reason it creeped me out lol. I watched Shane Dawsons videos at the time and I remember that video he uploaded about the situation. I didn’t know there was a video about this. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and upload this!
I don’t think Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) would be plausible here, if logging in isn’t. The impact of an XSS attack would always be doing anything a user could do. So if a user could change a MySpace text field, so could the XSS attack. It just performs actions on behalf of you (basically controls your browser). So if a UA-cam user cannot change their thumbnails, an XSS cannot either. My best guess would be a so called Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) vulnerability on UA-cam itself. Often websites use identifies such as the video ID in the URL, and when you want to change an thumbnail you send a request to the server saying “hey, change the thumbnail of this video ID to this thumbnail”. If you do this for your own video, it should accept it. But for a video ID of someone else, it should respond with “no you are not allowed”. An insecure server might not validate that you are the owner, and would just allow you to change any video ID. That might not have been found earlier because it often involves changing some ID in the background that isn’t visible without really digging into the traffic going back and forth (using a Proxy) Anyways, very interesting story and well told!

16:34 You can see Cuddles from Happy Tree Friends at the top
the fact that half the thumbnails were changed to my sweet piano is so funny
huh, never thought I'd be searching up this specific topic to end up stumbling upon an upload from just 10+ hours ago... neat!
Goodness, these videos are so fascinating.
Awesome video, thanks man
Ohhh I remember this! I remember at the time I felt outright salty that I wasn't targetted "I see how it is, I'm not good or popular enough to be hacked! >:( "
you might laugh at me, but this video made me tear up and cry, i mean, look at how The Internet and its people were so simple and fun, they all saw a hack going on UA-cam and they just laughed it off and the hacker himself didnt do something horrible, and how the old UA-cam UI was, the old content, MAN this stuff is just so touching, for a person like me who started using The Internet in 2010 (at 3 years old) i really want to go back to that era, i envy yet at the same time feel happy to everyone who attended that beautiful era of The Internet.
That beginning was a flashback. Someone needs to make a documentary on charles trippy.
I remember when this happened. I was 12 and for some reason it creeped me out lol. I watched Shane Dawsons videos at the time and I remember that video he uploaded about the situation. I didn’t know there was a video about this. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and upload this!
UA-cam Then (Goofy): 10 minute limit
UA-cam Now (Too Serious): 10 hours of the Ultramarines Chant
That might not have been found earlier because it often involves changing some ID in the background that isn’t visible without really digging into the traffic going back and forth (using a Proxy)
Anyways, very interesting story and well told!
Honestly, I think you might be right. That is such an interesting theory.,
Thanks for sharing! :)
Sounds about right. Cool explainer.
Based MaiAids, glad to see another video about this. We in ye old YTP community ran this site back in those days.
