FYI: This is why comments are not allowed on the COPPA-Compliant UA-cam Kids. It was to prevent these bots from interacting with children who don't know any better.
The reason is because of issues regarding data collection of children requiring permission from parents. Even Google knows that's a huge hassle and opts not to do it.

These bots are like the most annoying hydra ever. Take out one and you get 20 more. And it feels like this'll never be truly solved since these bot makers are masters of ingenuity when it comes to circumventing countermeasures. Shame they use it to spam instead of for anything actually useful.
There is no way that bots who write comments on UA-cam can be useful. It is either way would be a weapon of information. Whatever information do they choose to spread, it is not from real people.
UA-cam doesn’t care. They don’t care about the bots, the spammers, the scammers or the impersonators. They don’t care about repeated, malicious and targeted abuse of the copyright takedown system that sees innocent channels struck down by bad actors. All they care about is ad revenue and making the whole platform increasingly lousy with ads.
UA-cam will literally go out of their way to punish a creator for having a single drop of blood in their videos or playing slightly violent video games, but will be perfectly fine with overly sexual pathetic ass scammy excuses for mobile game ads...
It's disgusting to see YT letting the porn and spambots run rampant, especially because the only person who stands to lose face from them are innocent UA-camrs. I've only ever seen people bitch at the people running the accounts for not fixing it, instead of taking aim at the platform
This is a massive issue that doesn't get enough attention. My channel is targeted frequently, so thanks for shining some light on the issue! Hopefully, UA-cam can come up with a fix soon.
i personally don't find bots annoying or a nuisance at all cause of how easy it is to ignore them and it's really obvious when you see one anyway soo they can't really do anything to me
@@eE-jj4xv Creators have to spend energy and time blocking those comments and there is a small number of people actually falling for them. The fact that you aren’t falling for them doesn’t mean jackshit.
The bots have gotten worse, and the filter has gotten stricter, but I don't know of a single time it got rid of a bot, but I do know of a billion times where it got rid of normal comments, some of which I commented.
That's literally what happened to the old forums of one community I was in. Alive in like 2012-2017, then gradually died out and now it's just missing SSL certificate, website template falling apart and one scam/sex/whatever bot once in a time. Sad sight, but well, Discord communities just wiped the forums out from any purpose.
Ughhhh bots are sooooo damn annoying! Once I posted a comment on a gaming channel saying how much the game means to me. And then a "Get free Robux" channel copied my comment, getting hundreds of likes while my legitimate comment got two. I was so frustrated!! And I stil am!
They plagiarized your comments and put them out as their own, plus they also bot the likes to exploit the algorithm. That also happened to me once, so I put out a signature of my username, and they never stole my comment ever since.
FYI Reddit is not as bot free as implied in this video. The increased mod presence (versus YT) is true, but bots insta-boosting posts, spamming comments across subreddits and shilling for certain brands/ideals is absolutely a thing and getting worse by the minute. I would argue it's more dangerous than YT bots as the comments/post boosting can influence people's beliefs without them realising. Additionally, each post can get thousands of comments, with a sub having like 8 mods - it's actually more comments to moderate than a youtube channel (more daily posts can be made than a single youtuber could upload, generally). There is the ability for automods and bots to work with the mod team to remove the obvious spam though, which is great. But there's not a lot the average person can do because it's only when some niche subreddit hits the front page and the sub starts to go weirdly political in a single direction that you start to pay attention - and you only start to really notice when you start looking at the post history of individual users. God this got long, sorry to anyone who actually reads this. Wanna be friends?
The thing is, with youtube, you can just ignore comments all together, hell you can even disable them as a creator but on reddit the comments are part of the reason you are there to beign with.
I'm not a big fan of Reddit. The moderation there is very inconsistent, oftentimes toxic and 80% ran by salty basement dwellers. They don't follow the rules and just remove or ban users at random. Many of them are also being manipulated by companies paying them to delete negative comments and criticism. Reddit sometimes feels like an alternate universe and disconnected from reality because of this. It's distorted and unnatural. But every other social media platform is that too to some degree, also youtube with their strict censorship "community" guidelines, often random actions and decisions (dislike counter, more and more ads, heavily compressed low bitrate 4K behind premium paywall - but luckily all of those can be fixed with browser extensions).
Nobody has said yes to the friends thing yet (at least not that I can see), but sure! I'll take you up on that! EDIT: I realized that the comment might be satire, so uh, this could be awkward

I think what they could do is to auto-blur all comments that receive a downvote total below a certain % compared to the total views. That would employ the resources of the community to do the huge burden of the policing work, and then also the uploaders themselves can remove the rest not blurred out that circumnavigate this blur mechanism. If UA-cam employs this, I hope they send me my commission in the mail. (:
@@nationsquid I've seen it still employed by some chat communities and chat sites. It works very well, and I can't quite understand why they would depreciate such a mechanism. What bugs could such a thing have? And what could have made them get rid of it? Anyway, they do have some of the brightest minds working for them supposedly, so "if" they really wanted to do this, I would think they could.
@@nationsquid I remember that! It would either say "this comment has been marked as spam" or "this comment has received too many dislikes." Removing that feature was one of the dumbest things UA-cam ever did.
Aka the s*x bots, the roblox bots, the Fortnite bots, and the Minecraft bots, the bot problem has gotten so bad to the point where I will sometimes see bots on my UA-cam shorts page.
Roblox bots are almost everywhere on Roblox videos. Minecraft bots are almost everywhere on Minecraft videos. Fortnite bots are almost everywhere on Fortnite videos. [REDACTED] are bots that if you click on their channel, uhh you know what’s gonna happen… Sometimes, those bots are EVERYWHERE!!!
Fun fact: this is happening on Reddit. They’re massively being downvoted, but it is still happening exactly the same. I’ve seen a number of links lately in similar fashion. The mods have been trying but it’s been getting harder, so that’s the option to help atm
@@Muhluri some aren’t even doing this. They’re doing linktree links for nsfw content. I’ve seen only nsfw accts as of now, and you know it’s bad when the worst subs aren’t willing to ignore it.
Maybe UA-cam should make the dislike button do... literally anything. A heavily downvoted comment on reddit won't be recommended. A heavily disliked comment on youtube probably will be recommended, since Google sees all interaction as good. And many subreddits can block users from commenting who have had too many downvotes and not enough upvotes. If channels here could do the same, then bots would expire once they have too many dislikes and be automatically blocked from commenting.
@@generalcodsworth4417 they will be hidden but can still be read. Comment reporting is what needs to be fixed. They don’t deal with the reports. And i feel like the removal of dislikes only served to aggravate this, as people that fall for these channels won't be able to see the huge amount of dislikes on their channels and will think it's legit
Considering comments apparently help boost a video's likelihood of appearing in a user's recommended feed, I can't help but wonder how many content creators purposefully leave these fake comments up for that reason.
It is a possibility, since back in the old days of UA-cam, I would actually leave comments on my own videos. But again, at the time, I didn't know any better, and UA-cam's algorithm at the time was way different from the current one.
Yeah. It's happening with many popular channels, such as penguiz0 and videogamedunkey. I can't look much comments on these videos without asking myself if they're real...
This isn’t even the first time, I remember like a couple months ago seeing bots advertising porn sites in comment sections 🤢 some of them just copypasted other comments from the same video. It was so annoying
UA-cam when he sees a bot commenting a NSFW website on videos: 😐 UA-cam when someone says "cr in ge": Comments Disabled. You can comment again when 1 day passes.
The part of the video about annotations brought back a serious case of nostalgia, sure they were annoying or even used maliciously sometimes but I still remember those few videos that were practically a somewhat interactive CYOA and man, those were cool as hell.
The first time I remember seeing these spambots was all the way back in late 2014/early 2015 when they were targeting large youtubers at the time: Markipler, Jacksepticeye, even Game Theory out of all channels.
Five years after, These Spammers are Becoming a THREAT to Everyone Else! (Including Me, the Only Bubble Bobble Dragon to be the Same Year as My Copy does)
Hey nationsquid, after i saw this it reminded me of this situation myself and my grandmother experienced and i thought you would find it interesting and maybe youd want to make a vid on it. Basically we have both been messaged by these bots that impersonated celebrities, their bios on their profiles would say "official fanpage". They would then go on about asking you what your name is how old are you and such. They then will ask you to download google chats to talk to them more. I went undercover for this since i was aware its a scam, and eventually they will try to scam you out of a lot of money. It was clearly a scam so i knew how to combat it accordingly but my grandma almost fell for it, luckily i stopped her before that happened. I havent heard anyone talk about it but this scam has been going on for a while and id love to hear you explain why people are doing it. :>
One thing I've noticed very frequently is that these bots will find a popular comment on a given video, and then steal that comment and post it on a bunch of different videos about a similar subject. I always wondered what the point of it was, since there wasn't any immediate scam presented, and I couldn't imagine farming for likes is a profitable strategy. But this does help explain that too. Also, don't get me started on the amount of bot channels I've seen with a username like "can we get 20k subs with no videos"- those ones are often bold enough to only spam comment the phrase "look at my username" over and over again
Actually I've seen alot of those weird named users behave normally, se of those are probably bots, but I think some are just random users Dat genuinely try to get the 20k subs lol
Its gotten to the point where I think twice about posting comments bc I know I'm just gonna be spammed with reply notifications from bots - which damages creators too as youtube is big on engagement for the algorithm.
Surprisingly I’ve never gotten a response from bots, but when scrolling through comments just about any comment with a reply had one bot or another in it, or say there was one reply but be blank
I once had a bot spam random words in the comments of one of my videos, it was really bizarre and kinda freaked high school me out at the time because most of the words were religious or medical related and I was scared that it was someone who didn't speak English very well trying to recruit me for a cult
imagine if by adding that they delete all the precious comments from sections on popular videos from years ago? like staples of the website? it really would be the worst case
@@whatthewhatthe9117 It wasn't their choice to make though and if UA-cam does remove comments... that would be the second worst thing they had done along with removing the ability to view how many dislikes a video has.
The same thing happens on Facebook, I hate it. Bots pretending to be lonely old men looking for friends, or celebrities wanting to chat and then asking for "donations"... it's sad.
The donations ones are always sooo unconvincing but that's honestly kind of upsetting because Facebook is a Boomer app and those old people will instantly fall for it
I've noticed the more inappropriate bots turn up on live chat, and spam comments during a live video. Which is much harder to report. UA-cam needs to sort these bots out now, as the fake verification mark has fooled me a few times. Great video as always!
Yeah someone I know does some small time streams on here and she on good days still gets at least 2-3 of those. One bad day it was like constantly popping back in after being kicked and deleted.
i got that "hey wanna be friends" in my comment section back when i was like 14 but he was just saying how he loved my gacha videos and wish i posted more but i never gave in so yeah its a pretty werid idk
I wish I could congratulate my favourite creators on putting so much effort into their stuff without blending in with the millions of spambots doing the exact same thing.

@@alguienxder3xd539 I kid you not I recently came across a video where multiple bots were communicating. I honestly thought I'd clicked on the wrong video or something. I'm talking about full fledged conversations between each other.
To be fair, countering spam/scam bots is a difficult arms race. Whenever you find a solution to one type of spam, the scammers quickly find a workaround. I'd say the number one biggest weapon against things like this is awareness. Make sure everyone you know is aware of the tactics scammers use to trick people.
@@alguienxder3xd539 any site can scam, it's all made by someone u don't know, why do u even trust them? They can write a line to get every information u write there, and all they need to make a convincing site is use inspector and copy the code
They already HAVE completely taken over You Tube! It's so sickening! And why isn't You Tube doing anything about it?! Every day I see one of the creeps impersonating someone's channel that I visit. With the same lame line like: "hey thanks for visiting, please write me at ------- ". And some folks don't even know the difference between the real channel creator, or the fake impersonating one. They have the real creator's picture and all. There's also a bot here that goes by different monikers, with the same prayer comment: "for everyone that's here may God bless you, blah, blah, blah". I think that's for likes, but it's still spam.
It used to be only huge youtubers that were really noticeable, now it's even youtubers that have only like 1k subs. Don't trust no one, Be careful out there!
I just wish that UA-cam had a report feature to say that a user is a bot, not spam, specifically bot. It wouldn't be that hard to implement in the already existing report list, and one person could delete hundreds of bot channels in a few hours if enough people report them. That would deal with the most obvious ones at least... which are the most common and obnoxious ones. I'm sure the bot channels creators would find a way to bypass it, but if UA-cam tries *anything* useful, it's already big.
Thanks for reminding me to turn on 2 step authorization. My worst nightmare is just waking up one day and having an account that I've spent years on just taken by someone else.

I knew they were spambots from the moment the first one got me. After a while, I decided to ask why the person behind the bots was still doing this, as I had made it blatantly obvious I knew they were just bots. What I got in response was a fake Markiplier telling me to send them a telegram to receive my prize. I’ve tried reporting them to UA-cam a few times before, and I’m still waiting for them to do something.
Yes, yes it is a hard issue to fix. It is a VERY tough issue that affects the whole internet, not just YT. I mean, what are they supposed to do, force you to do captchas every time you comment? The community would absolutely freak out if they do something like that. There isn't any comfortable or easy way to get rid of bots, this is something humanity genuinly has yet to invent.
Does fixing the problem make money? No. Does it drive our consumers to switch to other platforms? No, so why would they even fix it? It clearly isnt gonna benefit them short term, and they dont think about long term just by looking at all their recent decisions, it can be fixed, its just that yt wont do it.

Reddit mods spend more time removing comments they don't like than fighting bots
@@nikkehtine I mean, you right.

Fun fact: this is happening on Reddit. They’re massively being downvoted, but it is still happening exactly the same. I’ve seen a number of links lately in similar fashion. The mods have been trying but it’s been getting harder, so that’s the option to help atm
Reddit is much easier to moderate against bots than UA-cam

Considering comments apparently help boost a video's likelihood of appearing in a user's recommended feed, I can't help but wonder how many content creators purposefully leave these fake comments up for that reason.
viewers don't like to encounter annoying bots so creators should bonk these bots asap
It is a possibility, since back in the old days of UA-cam, I would actually leave comments on my own videos. But again, at the time, I didn't know any better, and UA-cam's algorithm at the time was way different from the current one.
