This is great! Thank you for sharing Victoria! I recently decided I wanted a career change, I love learning about anatomy but can’t stomach seeing wounds. I’ve been searching the past year for what my calling really is since my current field of work, behavior therapy, isn’t what I want to do forever. My mom had been in the medical field since I was a kid and she always mentioned medical coding or billing and I never thought about it. Once quarantine hit, I had the time to reflect and realized how well I might be for this field! I decided to go through a program from someone who is certified through the AACP, since the community colleges in my area paused the medical coding program for now. I’m very excited to start and love that this is a field that promotes continuing education!
Love your videos. Very helpful. I am attending UMA for my Associates Degree in Medical Billing and Coding. My biggest fear is not remembering anything.
Good question! Get familiar with the ICD-10-CM guidelines. Read over them a couple times. The key is not to memorize them, but become familiar enough that when you're coding for, for example, sepsis you remember there's a guideline and can find it and read over it to assure you assign the right code. CPT guidelines are usually right near the codes you're looking at, so you can check at the front of the section to see what the guidelines for code application are.
I'm doing the ICD -10, benefit investigation, and calling out to providers and insurances but my title is called Case Manager.....but it really a medical biller?
I work at a retail store that has a pharmacy in it. Would it be a good idea to transfer to the pharmacy to learn that kind of terminology, like the medications and prescriptions?
Thanks for your info. Would you please give me suggestions how can I get the job entrance after pass the CPC. Always does AAPC issue the certification of finishing the course approved?
I believe the AAPC issues a "certificate of completion" after you finish the course. Once you schedule and pass the CPC exam they will send your certificate in the mail. All the job hunting tips I have are on this video: ua-cam.com/video/RYXPA7rrZJw/v-deo.html I have a video with a recruiter with some job tips that I'll be posting on Tuesday.
Hey Victoria I want to say that I have recently gotten interested in this career and am open to changing my goals because of pandemic-related frustrations. I am an extrovert, so I love being around people. That said, I do not mind being alone for hours if I really have to. Would you recommend this job for someone with extroverted tendencies?
We have lots of jobs for introverts and extroverts. There's always lots of jobs for behind-the-scenes introvert types. BUT, because of that there's always a big need for coders that are willing to work closely with providers, really giving them expert advice, building those relationships so they can partner and maximize revenue and really be part of the team. Those coders are harder to find, so those are usually the better paying positions in medical coding.
I would consult your accountant but my understanding is that unless you are self-employed or your expenses are more than 2% of your adjusted gross income they are not tax deductible.
Question. I just finished the program thru approved school by the AAPC. Since the book changes every year and I have not scheduled my cpc exam - I’m still studying. How is that going to affect me since I have the 2020 books. Thank kindly. Can I schedule my exam in 2021?
For all AAPC exams you can use the current year or prior year's books. You cannot use the next year's books. So yes, you can schedule your exam but you cannot use any 2021 books until January 1 of 2021.
Contempo Coding I really do appreciate you a lot. Your real your doing it for the good not just for profit and fame. Thank you and I do love your story. Truly an inspiration to me. Not easy for me it’s a hard work. I can also relate to your story. ❤️🙏❤️
Do employers usually supply or give allowances for computer and internet? Have you ever had a problem with internet security? Do employers provide vipn or firewalls for internet security?
There are part time positions but they're not as easy to come by. You can get a feel for how many and what the requirements are by checking codersdirect.com and filtering by part time positions.
Thank you for your informative videos. Who would you choose an associates degree program over a certificate? I am currently going for my certificate, but have the opportunity to continue for my associates, it's twice the cost, do you think it is worth it?
Thanks for reaching out. As you can imagine, I get many requests for job seeking advice so I’ve compiled all of my best tips in these UA-cam videos: ua-cam.com/video/EiztYHg-wos/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/sVUzWxAZqik/v-deo.html I think you’ll find it very helpful. I am not currently offering individual assistance on job searching at this time and do not have any job leads to provide for you. Best of luck!

The key to medical coding isn't knowing everything, it's just knowing where to FIND everything. :)
Contempo Coding thank you 😊
Very informative & polite! Thank you for being so helpful & a smiling face, you make a difference!
Happy to help!
How do you know when to look for a Guideline?

Can I work overnight? Let's say like 9 pm to the am?
I haven't seen a lot of jobs that offer that sort of flexibility with hours.
Can you do a video on what to put on your resume when you are officially CPC certified?
Thank you! I watch several of your videos every night after studying! So helpful!
You're very welcome!
What if doctor do not a npi what do you put that box

That might not be a bad idea! You'll get familiar with insurance, medications, and even some diagnoses.

If I was starting over, I would go with the associate's degree program.
