Hi! Thanks for the doing this video! It was very informative. Not sure if I'll be self-studying or taking classes for medical coding online yet. Do you recommend studying medical terminology before getting into the other books? And if so, do you have a medical terminology book that would recommend?
Hello, great videos! I will do my advanced coding 100% online, it’s part of my degree. Any advice in terms of preparing for this course would be appreciated. 🙏❤️
I phoned AAPC and spoke with a counselor (very helpful), but kind of confused in that what it sounds like I need to take - CPT course costs $2,500 to $3,200 on their site. Self study is the $2,500 one. That is what is holding me up at the moment. Is there a way to do it that is not thousands of dollars? I loved this video and it referenced less than $1,000, which is why I'm asking. Thank you so much for your fantastic videos

I'm a medical assistant for over 15 years thru the training we took a billing and coding class and since I moved to Florida I started working and now doing more Coding & Billing again but not fully polished is there any way to just take the test thru experience if I buy the books?
I'll be returning to school for a certificate program next month and just starting the actual coding classes. Curious if the AMA versions have the guidelines at the beginning of the chapters or if you can list which ones do and which ones do not? I don't have books yet, but I'd prefer to purchase ones that do. From what you've mentioned, that sounds like it would be much more useful to navigate. Thank you!
I just joined AAPC and signed up for their CPC package, but self paced. Thank you for making this channel. I suspect I am going to be on here every single day for the next few months lol
How are you liking it so far? I'm planning on doing the same thing through the AAPC website in December after I've paid off some bills. Online self paced is a better option for me because I work weird hours so I can't do timed virtual classes or in person classes.
Is the Step by Step textbook and workbook more thorough of a study guide than the "Official Study Guide" listed on the AAPC site? I just recently started self paced studying and am using the AAPC Study Guide, but I'm not sure its the easiest to follow along with, and I have a healthcare/clinical background. Is it worth it to also get the Step by Step books?
You should be able to use current year or one year prior. For example, in 2024 you should be able to use 2024 or 2023. This is on their official guidance. If your proctor did not abide by the guidance, you should contact AAPC directly. www.aapc.com/support/certification-exams/which-years-books-should-i-use " What year's books should I use? You may choose to utilize books from the preceding year, the current year, or a combination or both; however, only one copy of each book is allowed. Books older than one year are are NOT allowed for exam use."

I’m looking into taking the online CPC course with AAPC without a live online instructor but the cost will be around 3400. You mentioned in this video that the cost if you buy the book bundles, the exam, and practice exams will be under 900. What is the difference since both are self paced and self study and what would you suggest?
I do like and highly appreciate your videos the way you inform and explain.. I am afraid sometimes I need to have a word as I have few queries.. how could I do that.. could you please inform... Thank you!

Thank you! I am wondering if coding still a field to go into…? Is it worth the schooling in 2020? I mean with all the technology and all… wouldent the field become absolite in say like 10years?
They don't have access to any exam scores unless you provide that information to them. I personally have never been asked -- scores weren't even given when I took the CPC exam in 2008. I can't recall any coders being asked to provide that information.

HELLO great thanks for your helpful info. I'm interested in the medical billing and coding filed, I just working on my terminology class. I want to know what certificate is better compare CMCS Medical Billing & Collections Specialist and CPC? what is the difference and when looking for the job?
Definitely the CPC. Very, very few employers are looking for the CMCS. If you're looking for a coding job they will require credentials either through AAPC (like the CPC) or through AHIMA (like the CCS or CCS-P).
I’ve recently been looking into this field just want to say that your channel has been so informative! My local university partners with an online education program called ed2go and they offer various billing and coding options. They have one for a certified CMAA + CPC billing and coding. As someone who has zero experience in the medical field, would you recommend that I spend the extra $500 for the CMAA?
I've not known any coders that have the CMAA. If you're specifically looking into getting into billing and coding and not into doing medical secretary work, I would scrap the CMAA.
I'm also taking classes thru Ed2go and I am struggling with what program to take to to boost my career. I have an associates degree in Medical Assisting and a diploma in Medical Administrative Assistant. I realllly like the idea of being certified in Electronic Health Records but I also keep seeing jobs with coder attached.... by any chance, do you have any suggestions?
Im already struggling and frustrated with my A&P and Medical Terminology.... how much will this affect the coding portion. Did you take these classes or find them necessary for coding application?
Trying to minimize my overall purchase cost through the AAPC website. Is there another recommendation for Medical Terminology and Anatomy books that you can suggest?
I don't have any specific suggestions -- I would maybe check in Amazon and see what's popular. I know there's a good variety including the "Medical Terminology for Dummies" variety as well.
There are two options with AAPC. One if fully self-learning with modules, the other more expensive option is with a live instructor that you meet with via Zoom. You can check out aapc.com for more information.
I am half way through a medical coding program through PennFoster College and I am estimated to finish Dec 2021. I will sit for the exam in 2022. Should I wait and buy the ICD10, CPT, and HCPCS 2022 editions?

I have an associates degree in Medical Assisting and a diploma in Medical Administrative Assistant. I realllly like the idea of being certified in Electronic Health Records but I also keep seeing jobs with coder attached.... by any chance, do you have any suggestions?
The EHR specific stuff I don't have a lot of insight on. I know some of the programs like EPIC will only train through your job, you can't independently go and get certified.
Hello, my name's Erik. I want to begin coding. I have zero experience but I'm somewhat familiar with the process due to helping my ex study from home. I would also take the quiz's with her and sometimes scored higher than her so I'm pretty confident I could pass the test with of course enough proper study... which is my question. I live in a homeless shelter and have next to no guidance on this subject. So if I could only afford one book $80 aacp which one of the 3 should I get? And is it possible to learn the individual book with only that book? I have only a trash bag of clothes and want to begin a new life, so any help would help motivate me so so much..thank you
So I have my medical billing and coding associates but never passed the test? Would It be beneficial to self study, I don't want to repeat school again
Hello!👋 I learnt that codes change annually. What do medical coders should do when codes are about to change? I hope I will get a response from you.. thanks in advance 🙂
Recently I saw Coding Clarified is offering a course that is equivalent to 2 years experience internship. You complete 600 cases. Do companies like to see experience gained thru a educator? If so,is AAPC going to offer anything beyond one year? I would really like to have the 2 years trying to get my foot in the door. And you cannot take their internship if your courses were thru another company for the certification.
I'm not super familiar with Coding Clarified but I just checked out their website and I'm not super thrilled with their "About" statement. "Coding Clarified provides a self paced online medical coding course to prepare you to become a certified professional coder by taking the CPC exam. In just a few months, you’ll benefit from a stable and rewarding career that’s in high demand." I think stating that anyone can get a job in a few months is a bit too much hyperbole for my taste. Honestly, I'm skeptical. I would go through the AAPC, have the year taken off apprenticeship for going through the 80 contact hours and then going through their Practicode if your focus is getting through that requirement.
Contempo Coding your responses are always so fantastic and detailed. So just to clarify Practicode will remove the remaining one year after I do my course and pass CPC thru AAPC? I really prefer AAPC’s website and it just seems more structured. I agree that there seems to be a visible quality difference. Yes, I live where there are two large hospitals (Tallahassee) and all their job listings say “2 years”. This is my 2nd career so I have an AA, BS in Crim, and 2 master’s certifications in Florida Government and Emergency Management. I did 12 years in administrative law enforcement. I have tons of casework experience, not medical. I was a CNA and a phlebotomist for about 1.5 years when I was young. That is the only “medical” experience I have. It feels weird that I have soo many skills and education and I dont quality for even the low end jobs. Sorry!!! Long post!!! 🙌🏼🥰

And how long is the certification is available for one year or in need renew every year taking one exam I m not so clear in this 🙏I hope you answer my question

Thank you for your very useful information!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Can you update your Amazon links for 2021 books? I want you to get credit, thanks!
Done. :)
Can you use the 2020 aapc cpc certification study guide for the cpc exam in 2022 but making sure that you have 2022 icd-10, hcpcs and cpt books for the actual exam? If I need to buy a new book I would rather buy bucks but if I could save money with the older study books i will
You have to use the current years books, for the current year exam you are taking. So, no 2020 books/guides are not updated for exams in 2022.
Hey !
Thank you so much for the tips.
Watching your video makes me want to learn from you. Do you also teach online courses?
U need to buy membership that's for 180 to take their cpc exam and to get discount on books and book set that's for around 300 and exam cost is 299 ... hope that helps that's is for self study...
@@tgamer4662 so far so good, only a few weeks in so I'll update in a while ☺️
@@halroxdynasty8683 ty ill be looking forward to your update!!!
was wondering how your class was going? how much time/week do you find you are spending on course material?
Expensive through them
Is the Step by Step textbook and workbook more thorough of a study guide than the "Official Study Guide" listed on the AAPC site? I just recently started self paced studying and am using the AAPC Study Guide, but I'm not sure its the easiest to follow along with, and I have a healthcare/clinical background. Is it worth it to also get the Step by Step books?
How can I enroll in your risk adjustment program
contempocoding.newzenler.com/courses/risk-adjustment-coding-crc-course
How many total hours of study time roughly would you recommend for a person with NO prior medical field experience, before taking exam?
Hi,,how can u help with online studying in uk to get certificate, thanks
Aapc wouldn't let me sit for the exam with the year prior books 😊
Thank you😊
You should be able to use current year or one year prior. For example, in 2024 you should be able to use 2024 or 2023. This is on their official guidance. If your proctor did not abide by the guidance, you should contact AAPC directly.
www.aapc.com/support/certification-exams/which-years-books-should-i-use
" What year's books should I use?
You may choose to utilize books from the preceding year, the current year, or a combination or both; however, only one copy of each book is allowed.
Books older than one year are are NOT allowed for exam use."
Hi I'm Michael,a medical doctor in Nigeria.i have been following your page in UA-cam,and I must confess you are doing a great job ,you are really God sent.thank you so much for sharing such information about medical coding.am really interested in pursuing medical coding and billing as a second career......but I can't get my hands on proper institution or online institution for international graduate..when I ask people about medical coding in my country ,they just look lost....pls can you help me
I’m looking into taking the online CPC course with AAPC without a live online instructor but the cost will be around 3400. You mentioned in this video that the cost if you buy the book bundles, the exam, and practice exams will be under 900. What is the difference since both are self paced and self study and what would you suggest?
did you ever get an answer i bought the same 3400 dollar course and feel like all have is books.
Wondering the same.....
What about 2021 if you r trying to get for your certification
Same materials, 2021 versions if available. If testing in 2022, use the 2022 versions if available.
I do like and highly appreciate your videos the way you inform and explain.. I am afraid sometimes I need to have a word as I have few queries.. how could I do that.. could you please inform... Thank you!
Would you recommend to buy all AAPC practice exams (A-F)? What is the difference, if you know?
They're all just different questions, each exam has a different 50 questions. How many depends on how much practice you need -- practice makes perfect!
Thank you! I am wondering if coding still a field to go into…? Is it worth the schooling in 2020? I mean with all the technology and all… wouldent the field become absolite in say like 10years?
I address that question in this video... ua-cam.com/video/A9j3IEqeSiE/v-deo.html
Does AAPC exam is recognized in AUSTRALIA? Do I need to give any other exam if I clear the CPC exam by AAPC
Google AAPC Global, I believe that is the company for non-US based coding.
Subscribed. Thank you for this helpful content
Thanks for the sub!
Do you have tips for learning anatomy?
Do employers look at your actual score once you complete the exam? How heavily do they consider your score?
They don't have access to any exam scores unless you provide that information to them. I personally have never been asked -- scores weren't even given when I took the CPC exam in 2008. I can't recall any coders being asked to provide that information.
@@ContempoCoding Can I appear in a exam without going to any school or a college? I mean I wanna self study because I can't afford a college fees. Can I do any entry level courses by self study? Please reply I'm desperate
@@rajivkaphle7038 That is not recommended. Keep in mind you have to pay for the exam and 20-30% do not pass their first 1-3 times so it would be beneficial to complete a thorough program first.
can I use 2020 books for the AAPC 2022 course and test?
Have you progressed more towards your training program?
Please can you help me decide between ICD-10-PCS and CPT 2021 to buy for cpc exam, besides is it necessary to buy from AAPC or Amazon.
I have taken membership of AAPC but finding it difficult to decide the book package to order. for cpc preparation,
There is no PCS in the CPC exam. Check the video description for links for book recommendations.
Thank you, love your videos, ordered the books from AAMA.
Where can I get CPT surgery coding practice questions and answers. I mean online websites or tools.
You can purchase the specialty practice cases on Practicode. www.aapc.com/practicode/practicode-modules.aspx
I have a RHIT certification. I was wondering should I get a coding job before sitting for either the cpc or ccs ?
Trying to minimize my overall purchase cost through the AAPC website. Is there another recommendation for Medical Terminology and Anatomy books that you can suggest?
I don't have any specific suggestions -- I would maybe check in Amazon and see what's popular. I know there's a good variety including the "Medical Terminology for Dummies" variety as well.
do online courses from AAPC come with a youtube instructor, zoom, ect. Does anyone know?
There are two options with AAPC. One if fully self-learning with modules, the other more expensive option is with a live instructor that you meet with via Zoom. You can check out aapc.com for more information.
I am half way through a medical coding program through PennFoster College and I am estimated to finish Dec 2021. I will sit for the exam in 2022. Should I wait and buy the ICD10, CPT, and HCPCS 2022 editions?
It's definitely recommended (but not required) to use the current calendar year books for the year your sitting for the exam.
How is the program?? I’ve been looking into there program trying to find real-time reviews.
Keen to do self study but the 2023 step by step isn't out till next month. Should I start with 2022 or just wait to start.
Up to you -- the technical concepts of how to do medical coding don't change, but some of the codes themselves and guidelines do.
Should the step by step book be from the current year? I see the one for 2021 but I may not take the exam until march
Yes, but the updated 2022 might not be out yet and they honestly don't change much from year to year. Like 1% of the book or less.

Ok ty
I’m debating if I’m should billing coding class online with no instructor. Is it possible?
Yes, I've known some that have done it with great success and others that have done it and regretted it.

I would be beneficial to study for the CPC exam with the CPC exam review, study guide and/or practice exam materials available at aapc.com.
Hello!👋
I learnt that codes change annually. What do medical coders should do when codes are about to change?
I hope I will get a response from you.. thanks in advance 🙂
Learn the changes and buy new books.
In just a few months, you’ll benefit from a stable and rewarding career that’s in high demand."
I think stating that anyone can get a job in a few months is a bit too much hyperbole for my taste.
Hi. I was wondering if you have any info as far as going thru Medcerts for your cpc
Medcerts is a good program. 🙂
I love your page thank you ♥️
You are so welcome!
But can we get a job if we make self study
What is your wedsite?
Hello.I want to join for Medical Coding. Please let me Know how do we go about it.
Hey Spence! Start here: ua-cam.com/play/PLPHIVqUe1ntymPQwklM3CmCATOtXsFmfe.html
So once you get certified do you have to buy new coding books every calendar year?
I want to self study and wondering if I can ask u questions
Thanks for reaching out. As you can imagine, I get many requests for advice so I do charge for my time and expertise. You can pay for and schedule a session here: contempocoding.as.me/
Can you please do a video discussing the difference between NHA and AAPC and AHIMA
Sure!
Excellent tips on how to DIY 🤓
Thank you! 😊
Does AAPC offer just an anatomy course??
Absolutely -- you can find it here: www.aapc.com/training/online-anatomy-training-courses.aspx
I m planing to taking some courses in one institution, I m Spanish speaking will be so hard for me go in to this medical and billing courses , ( the test to get certification is so hard ? And how long is the certification is available for one year or in need renew every year taking one exam I m not so clear in this 🙏I hope you answer my question
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Which books do I need in order to pass the CPB exam if I want to study on my own?
You'll want the CPB study guide.
www.aapc.com/training/cpb-study-guide.aspx
Also CPT AMA Professional Edition and your choice of ICD-10-CM and HCPCS.
Is there another book or somewhere online I can find more chapter specific test questions or worksheets?
Did you say Berks County? Do you mean Berks County in PA? I am in Berks County!!! Small world.
Is there a guide inside each book as to where to even start studying (what chapter do you start in?) or would I just review the entire book and each book? Please help.
You would need to get the Step-by-Step books or similar for a study plan, which would be just going in order of the book.
@@ContempoCoding Thank you! I am trying to get my CPC. I think I'm going to try that (going the self study route first). If I see it's not working out for me then I'll pay for the AAPC course.
Can you link me to the 8-hour class you suggest. I have 45 days to pass. 😭😬🙂
