I used to listen to this song over and over. The first record I ever bought (yes, on vinyl) was Abba.
So sad this song, Agnetha singing the song written by her ex-husband about her divorce

"The winner takes it all" (1980)
is Their most saddest song, it's a heartbroken song, although at the same time it is a beauty of music and song, with a raw but excellent lyrics, it's a Masterpiece
the blonde singer Agnetha has said in other interviews that She likes to sing melancholic or sad songs, because She can act and interpret the feeling of the lyrics.
    that's what She does here, in this song;
the lyrics are not about the reality of Her marriage and divorce with guitarist Björn (although it can include part and was inspired by), She acts interprets and sings, it is Flawless Unmatched and Unforgettable
Agnetha and Björn separate at the end of 1978 with two small children; the legal divorce occurs in the middle of 1980, a year and a half later; and that's when Björn writes the lyrics, on a melody that the pianist Benny had already elaborated, and Björn himself makes a demo with his voice
"The winner takes it all" was voted the best ABBA song by British fans between all their singles edit in UK
it is also the favorite song of both: Agnetha & Björn
It gives ABBA the eigth #1 in UK and last Top 10 in US (#8 in Billboard at 1981) and #1 in Adult Contemporary

ABBA does something like that a lot. Transporting sad, serious content (often separation) in a disco-pop case. Examples: "One Of Us", "S.O.S." or "Knowing Me, Knowing You".

Great and authentic reaction Travis. Another amazing thing about Abba is how effortlessly, and perfectly, they speak in perfect English , just like a lot of Scandinavians who learn it in school. Abba has been my favorite band since 1976 when I was 3 years old! I know every song that they ever did and also know a lot about the band members. I can make suggestions for you. Their sound is so unique and timeless. When the ladies sang together in unison it's know as the one voice of Abba. I love I've been waiting for you. It also showcases Agnetha's voice. Frida's has a mezzo soprano voice and is also amazing. Listen to Andante Andante also where Frida takes lead. I cam suggest many more! Greetings from Barbados 🇧🇧

Album tracks like "Move On", "If It Wasn't For The Nights", "Hole In Your Soul" and "That's Me" are among their best songs so don't just listen to the hits. I also love their early stuff like the glam rock song "So Long" and the ballad "Gonna Sing You My Livelong" from 'the other woman's perspective'. Their string and synth arrangements on that one are fantastic.

Travis, thanks for your reactions and obvious joy in discovering the wonders of ABBA. People were often quick to dismiss them back in the day as mere manufacturers of happy clappy pop. And true, no-one did happy clappy pop with such style and joy as ABBA. But their music has so many styles and textures, with a great deal of emotional maturity in so many songs - scratch the surface, and there is a melancholy underlying so much of their best work. How could an ex-husband have asked his former wife to sing those lyrics? but thank God he did, as this resulted in the best break up song in pop history. The words, and her magnificent but vulnerable vocals are unmatched. The addition of the drums/dance beat and Benny's genius piano playing add another dimension. I have listened to this song for 42 years, and my heart still breaks a bit every time I do. I love watching young folk enjoying their music as much as old farts like me from back in the day first time round. Keep going Travis, you have treasure to discover!

LOVE your genuineness and sincerity in your reviews! Yes, you are now stuck in the ABBA "rabbit hole." I suggest "Lay All Your Love On Me," since you enjoyed the feel of this one. The lyrics to that one are sad, but it is perhaps their most successful dance song. It is full of lush synths and dramatic production AND Agnetha, who has lead vocals here, sings lead on LAYLOM. Others to focus on include "Take A Chance On Me," "S.O.S." and "The Day Before You Came." I look forward to more ABBA from you!

I'm glad you have found your way into ABBA's musical treasure trove! And this song makes me both sad and happy; sad and moved because of the story(based in reality) told
through the lyrics, but happy because they managed to turn something as hurtful and tragic as divorce into a beautiful work of art.
And Agnetha's voice ... crystal clear with precision, versatility and resilience!
You know ... the Nobel Prize, IKEA, Linnaeus, pacemakers, meatballs, Minecraft and all that stuff is all nice and dandy,
but ABBA is probably * the * greatest treasure that Sweden has given the world. ♥
"Lay all your love on me" is my suggestion for your next venture into ABBA's music.
It's an upbeat, dramatic song with a very layered melody in which you can find new things even after tens of times listening to it. :] ♥

Travis…..I can’t believe I missed this post..but with that said Abba was MY MY MY favorite band when I was in my teens and early 20’s. I still know all .. of the words to every song they sang….Bless you my friend for bringing back the BEST music from the 70’s. I had this small record player my parents bought for my 13 Birthday. I did chores around the house to earn money to buy my massive 45 record collection. Music was inbreed in my life at a very early age.My Mom was a professional singer who sang in small clubs. I believe she was in her late teens early 20’until she stopped to marry my Dad. The rest is history. Both my parents have long passed away but the music of that era will always live on. Thank’s to people like you. Another women artist I love ❤️ is Carole King… Check out her Tapestry album. Every song I know by 💜 heart. You won’t be sorry……Judy D

For a next reaction I suggest their First worldwide hit, the Icónic:
    "Waterloo" (1974)
    but Not the Official Video
(it's good and now in 4K Quality)
it's better to see and react the live perfomance at the famous Eurovisión Song Contest, when ABBA win with these iconic song and begin your worldwide career:
    ua-cam.com/video/3FsVeMz1F5c/v-deo.html
    Another good options:
    1) the masterpiece "S.O.S." (1975)
Their second worldwide hit (after "Waterloo") and the song that gives ABBA your identity as a pop group
    2) their second Biggest Worldwide hit: "Fernando" (1976)
with the brunette singer Frida as lead voice, to see all the voices of ABBA
    3) their third biggest worldwide hit " "Chiquitita" (1979)
in the worldwide premier to the Concert for UNICEF at United Nations
    ua-cam.com/video/lsme6df584s/v-deo.html
    See you in next video
I wish you a great weekend

She could do it because is very profesional , and they split at end of 1978
it's a TV show express in 1980, first perfomance,
follow by "Súper Trouper" & "On and On and On"
You must check all the show in a row, and see how Agnetha & Björn playing together
PS: and isn't a True History, its fiction , but inspired in their own divorce

Funny what you recall. I associate ABBA as part of the developing Alan Parsons Project. One contemporary reviewer thought of them as a 'formula band' - which is what I think of as The Monkees. They recorded in many languages - with coaching - and did not speak English. One UA-cam video shows them as having an enthusiastic welcome in Australia. Commentary doesn't matter. The piano and harmonies speak for themselves: Genius.
