Thank you for this fantastic in-depth review! You really covered all of the bases, and the comparison to other modern headsets is really appreciated.
Could you please tell me more about the developer experience with the XR Elite, and how it stacks up against other headsets you've used? I'd like to know if you have any opinion/preference on OpenXR vs WaveXR SDKs. I also had a hard time finding any information on the workflow for actually pushing a build to the device for testing. I understand you're more of an Unreal developer, but it looks like Unity handles this from the build settings, and you could probably push a build via SideQuest as well. Any thoughts?
Subbed. Keep up the great work!

I had discounted it because the diopter couldn't correct for astigmatism, but good to hear you can use a third party lens. Also cute transitions in your video when you synced playback on screen of you talking while demonstrating what you were saying

@@gemoth65 we would probably need to know something about optics to understand it. But we could speculate anyway. Maybe not relevant or particularly noticeable for that prescription or the effective distance (1.5m?) in headsets? Or: I tried to understand the tutorial on the idiots guide to "Converting a Glasses Prescription To Contact Lenses" web page and in part three they mention adding sphere to compensate for less cylinder (related to astigmatism) so perhaps just upping the diopters beyond your normal prescription with astigmatism corrected for can compensate (maybe only to a certain level - complete ignorance on my part about how light enters the eye at what angle, etc and so on)

We have just got two xr for our school and I was beginning to lose faith (I don't want to go meta...) but I'm really struggling. One set came with dead pixels and the other I can't get to conect to my laptop at all, either wireless or usb with steam installed. I wish I saw this video sooner! I may have to get those lenses, that's the first I have seen made to fit the headset. I ended up talking with my optometrist and we got ski goggle insert frames that fit inside the gasket. They work quite well, but aren't perfect. I wonder if these will work with the face tracker installed or not. (Edit: nope, confirmed they don't on the site, ah well) Unsure the insert frame will.
Good, fair review. Have you tried the MR gasket, face tracker, or ultimate trackers yet?
I have a back injury so unfortunately it's not a perfect match to my needs. It really needs a lying down mode like the quest apparently does, or something like horizon adjustment that VRC has. Still, I am toughing it out because I don't want to wear a "faceberg".

I know a lot of people probably will say this headset sucks but the design and image of it looks great. I appreciate this review. I was gifted an Occulus Rift and have been using it for about 3 years before the earphones kicked the bucket. I was looking around for my next headset and I wanted to go wireless, and I use it to work out daily so it needed to hit a few key marks. I don't really care too much about ultra resolution, response time, ect. I just needed it to be functional and easy to work with. I also did not want to deal with the specter of Meta or the CCP in my computer with a service that never turns off (or restarts itself somehow).
All the other review sites had too much production, and didn't really answer the questions that I had for daily use. What caught my attention was when you said "it was work" to put it on. That got me. Because I would procrastinate on my workouts because it was always work to put on the headset and get everything going. You said it was effortless to setup, and your daily use just made life easier.
That is what I wanted. It was this review about all others, that pushed me to pull the trigger on an Elite XR. I just wanted to thank you for this.

I agree with your comments on Meta, for me it is far too small. Then I haven't been happy with Vive either, after the Vive and Vive Pro, where they went to 74mm IPD, HTC started to stop at 68mm IPD, and I have 75mm IPD so not happy. My current HDM is the Pimax 8KX and the PSVR2, both of which cater for up to 75mm IPD. They both need mods to sit properly on your head, and balance weights, but they work for me.

Is the Vive XR good substitute for using as a widescreen desktop monitor for video editing and desktop work? That would be my main use case scenario for it. Or should I get a Vive 2 Pro instead, or something else entirely... or just a super wide wrap around desktop monitor.

I really wanted to like this headset but sadly I had to return it. The first major issue was that it was extremely uncomfortable, so much so after 30min I would have to take a break because my head would hurt, but this is comparing it to my quest 1 with after market facial interface and the Deluxe audio strap mod. Second it was very difficult to get my eyes to be dead center in the lenses and any slight variation would result in a very blurry view worse than my quest 1.
If steam doesn't at least announce there wireless headset, I just want them to say it's coming even if they say it won't be released until 2026, I might give this one another go. But I would need to find a replacement facial interface maybe even a new headstrap or a mod like the Deluxe audio strap one. I also might have to look into the lenses or contacts since that might be my issue on why it need to be dead center on my eyes.

Great. Thanks. You are clearly my people. I also want to not buy a Facebook headset certainly.
You mention Unreal dev. I'm using Unity, I assume that with steamVR would be fine too?
That's the main thing I need, replacing the old wired-Vive with frayed wires.
Can I just connect a cable to have it work as well as the current cable-connection on the old vive? Or will it be forced to be using wifi, or even force me to get a wifi6 to feed to the headset? Any ideas how well it'll work with my crowded tower-block with wifi 5G interference from all directions?
The cable works just fine for me in dev, at least until it frays and makes me need to replace it. If the wifi is too terrible can I just plug it in?
Any idea if I can use the index controllers with it via unity/steam? I love those touch-pads.
Thanks, you're doing a good job there.

So Unity / SteamVr: Yes, this'd be similar. I've not tried the cable much as it defeats some of the purpose for me, but they do support USB.
Not sure about the tower... Depends on too much...
As for index, if you have those pairef with SteamVR it should be fine - but those require base stations and I'm not sure how to combine standalone tracking with base stations... Probably can be done tho, I would google ppl who use Knuckles with Quest and see how they do it (if they do)

15:15 - You should care about how your Wifi access point looks on your wall, because unless you're in some very weird multifloor house with dead spaces, you have your antennas oriented in a terrible way. They radiate out like a donut if you were to slip a donut over an antenna. Your antennas should generally be pointed up and down, unless you have a specific reason not to. Above and below the tip and bottom of the antenna are NULL points where the radiated pattern is terrible or non-existent. A wifi network engineer walking into your house and seeing that on the wall would immediately adjust it like someone OCD adjusting a way crooked hanging picture on the wall. Point the tips of those antennas to the sky! You know, like cell towers are oriented... at a level somewhere where your head or laptop would be or between.

I know this is an old comment, but Meta is currently in the midst of a lawsuit because they used a VPN they acquired to intercept and decrypt users' Snapchat, UA-cam, and Amazon data. This isn't a conspiracy theory, it's internal documents from a federal class action lawsuit, it's called Project Ghostbusters.
This is the same VPN they payed teenagers to use so they could take all of their web activity, called Onavo.
I don't think it's terribly weird to say I don't want a camera made by them in my house, let alone strapped to my face.

Ok, so basically none of us care about your personal animus against Meta. We only care about the VR headset. I’m not looking to make a social statement via my VR headset choice FFS.
