  • We go hands-on with HTC's VIVE XR Elite virtual reality headset to demo a few native games and experiences, sample wireless streaming VR from a desktop gaming PC, and check out features like its hot swappable battery and passthrough visuals. We also chat with HTC's global head of product to dig deeper into the development of the XR Elite and the technologies that HTC has prioritized in this headset.

    I seriously hope the adjustable diopter becomes standard. There are so many people I can't really show vr to unless they buy prescription lenses, which for someone to 'have a try' is waaaaaay to high as a barrier.

      @@legendp2011 You shouldn't even if you can. Index was marketed as being 'glasses friendly' but within a few months I had scratches on my lenses. Fortunately valve seemed to be aware that wearing glasses with an index is a bad idea as they offered to replace the whole hmd without me even asking. Then I bought prescription inserts for myself, but my dad can't use my hmd.

    Was the depth sensor functional? So glad to see a thorough impression made by the right channel and reviewer. All essential topics covered. I hope HTC fixes things on its website and provide more details, specs, and pictures for its accessories. It’s comical of what they sell with no points or specs for add-ons. And I wish they would sell custom power banks safe for long-term usage in glasses mode.

Also, cradle details like weight on site or what are charging times or if it can be charged faster. Lot of things feel missing. The weight dimensions weren’t included as well previously. The diopter is going to make such a difference to my aged care volunteering (Mostly Google Earth via a laptop with a WMR and Wander on a pair of Oculus Go). Wander seems to get ported to everything so i'm assuming it'll be available) once i can afford one of these.
    Vision issues are by far my biggest problem when making sure everyone can have a go - about half the residents end up not being able to et their glasses in or being comfortable with glasses and so engaging via the screen mirror instead.

I like that this has a focus set of lense adaptors for those of us with glasses, but I'm reluctant to try Vive after the Pro 2, which had a very small focus area with the lenses and a max IPD less than 70mm. They use to make VR headsets with up to 74mm IPD, and I have 75mm IPD, so anything less than 73mm is not very useable for me. I need to know what the IPD max is and what type of focus area or sweet spot that the lenses have, if it is small then that is not good.
    I use a Pimax 8KX, which has 70mm max IPD manual adjustment, then software to get to 75mm, and lenses that have a large focus or sweet spot, it is fantastic, if a bit difficult to get setup and adjusted.

    The built in dioptre thing is pretty cool I'll give them that. But it won't help with the huge number of people (like me) who have an astigmatism, they'll still need glasses or lens adapters.
    One thought crossed my mind the other day. Would it be possible for vision correction to be done in software? You enter your prescription in the settings and the device distorts the image in the appropriate way to correct your vision. Then no dioptre settings or lens adapters would be needed.
    I don't know if that's even physically possible, but I feel like it should be. Maybe the hardware isn't good enough to do the distortion accurately and in real-time?

    • @coreywest9597
      @coreywest9597 Рік тому

      Hypothetically the distortion would probably just be a relatively simple shader layered onto each image, which considering how many videogames can use dozens of shaders at a time, and standalone headsets seem to do fine with most games, I don't think processing would be an issue. Interesting idea! Could be worth looking into. Biggest issue I could see is maybe requiring a different set of base lenses or screens? Hard to know unless actually doing any testing on it.

    • @gampolo2o
      @gampolo2o Рік тому +2

      Unfortunately as nice as it would be, that's simply not possible. Near/far-sightedness isn't just a distortion of the image, but more of a blurring effect as the light does not get properly focused on your retina. That means that no matter how you distort or shuffle around the pixels on the screen, each individual pixel will still end up being defocused and perceived as blurred, overlapping one another and causing a fuzzy (and now distorted) image.

    • @coreywest9597
      @coreywest9597 Рік тому

      @@gampolo2o But interestingly enough, at least in the case of near sightedness, you would expect for a screen which is maybe 6 inches from your face at best to not give you any issues seeing it, but as someone who is near sighted I can tell you it still does. I'm not too sure if this has to do with the lenses used in the headsets or some other thing I'm not aware of. While dynamically changing lenses would likely still be the far simpler solution, even though it'd likely be far off, wouldn't it be hypothetically possible to invent a type of screen specifically designed for XR applications that didn't require any external lenses, and if (and this is a big if) so, couldn't it be possible to alter the screen's way of presenting itself to your eye's focus in a way that could be controlled by software?
      At this point it's like talking about flying cars when horses and buggies were still being used, so I can't say I can expect anyone to have a good answer to this, but I still think it's fun to talk about. 'Not possible' is what happens when you don't think far enough outside the box!

    • @gampolo2o
      @gampolo2o Рік тому

      I'm nearsighted as well! It's still blurry for us because even though the screen is so close to our eyes, the lenses bend the light in such a way to make it seem like they're much further away, which actually requires that your eyes focus to that distance.
      And while manipulating the flat screen component isn't going to be able to change how the light focuses on your retina, there has been research (by Meta I believe) into flat lenses that can change focal distance with the application of electricity, as opposed to needing to be physically moved. Thin, digitally-controlled lenses like these could allow you to adjust for bad eyesight by just typing in your prescription, or even just adjusting the settings until it looks the sharpest. Who knows, with advances in eye tracking, it may even be able to determine your prescription automatically.

    I wish they'd release this without ALL of the standalone features specifically designed for PCVR.. Shove some lighthouse trackable points to it like the OG vive, figure a way of getting the refreshrate to 144HZ like the index & boom.. would sell like hotcakes, At least I'd buy one. I have a valve index setup with 3 light houses, it works AMAZINGLY , I wish they'd keep trying to push that side of things too.. not worrying about the head set itself driving games but merely a monitor for your very powerful pc and not worrying about tracking either.
