Thank you for this, Abbey! My baby just started on solids this week and I've been wondering how to go about BLW with him. This is such a great, straightforward, and informative video!
I think the only thing missing from this video was that baby should be eating with someone. A huge part of BLW is that the baby has someone to watch and learn how to chew the foods they are eating. My son is a great eater now at a year old thanks to BLW! He started out by having dinner with us, and he got exactly what we had (although I admit sometimes he got pasta without the sauce because I didn't have the will to clean up that mess) and caught on quickly how to chew and grab his fork and spoon. I appreciate that you put together this video because a lot of people seem to think that BLW needs to be done in a way that limits baby to ONLY soft foods and ONLY one food at a time. I think coming from a dietitian whose job it is to know food makes it seem more credible to people that are on the fence about it.
I really really appreciate this. Do you have any books you would recommend if I wanted to really dig into this? (Plus I am an avid and voracious reader and need more material).
Hi Abbey I love your videos... you are recommending nuts and grains for a baby 6 moths old?? My baby Xinalani is almost 7 and have been feeding her teff, quinoa and barley as well as oats and whole rice ... we are vegan Do you recomend any V B12
In every German book on how to introduce solid foods, I‘ve read that you should not feed your baby things like quinoa and that you should limit protein intake (only two eggs in a week)…?
This terrifies me so much if im honest. I mush everything up to tiny soft pieces, and feed my baby with a spoon. I want to do blw, but like, cant they choke on the avokado piece? Or on potatoes? What if a big piece of the bread breaks of and he chokes? I feel like I want to have my baby in a padded room and only feed him mushed food until hes fifteen... 🙈
Some of the foods you recommend are very high in oxalic acid, like sweet potatos and nuts. This will cause problems. Look up oxalates, there's a great talk about it by Sally Norton!
Abbey Sharp thanks for a reply, I believe he won’t be on pulps all his life but he will put blocks to his mouth, the same with dirt, rubbish, wires etc. But how careful he is to not put any piece of food 🤦🏻♀️🤣🤣
I will add that gagging is a normal reaction for a baby who is starting solid foods, even though it scares us parents. An 8 month old should definitely be able to handle soft foods like avocado, banana, or steamed veggies.
I think your channel is great, but when do you think you will go back to making videos that arent about babies? Im not against baby vids, its just that the vids are quite polarizing. The last three have been about babies.
@@AbbeysKitchen cool...thanks for the response. I like the two dieticians series...pretty darn funny. Overall great channel though. I'm very interested in nutrition/the human experience with food, and although I am vegan I like the balanced approach that this channel takes around diet. I want to hear all perspectives when it comes to what we should be eating. My approach is more ethical in regards to my dietary choice over health. Looking forward to more vids. :).

This is great. I never thought of rolling avocado or a slippery food on baby oatmeal or flax so babe can grip it.

For sure! Definitely an important part of baby led weaning :)

Great video! What age do you start with gluten and dairy?
I am sooooo glad to see you are pro-BLW
How old is your baby? I have a 6 month old and I have just given fruit or vegetable at this time.
jmonta21 11 months now but I introduced solids a while back.

Did you ever do the video on introducing allergens?
Hey Abbey are you secretly Ancel Keys great grand daughter or something?

My son refuses everything but thin mush and I cannot convince him to even try and he’s 10 months;((
Anna Ba hi Anna, i would say just continue to offer a variety of textures. It can take some babes a long time to adjust to the changes

Keep your pediatrician up to date about this. Some kids need a little help from a speech pathologist to accept and chew textured foods.
Yes I definitely will there is something not completely right he’s reaction for even small particles of potato I’m his mouth is always exaggerated
tried this on my 8 month old. she immediately almost choked.. this method scares me, ill stick to puree.
