I love growing philodendrons trailing sometimes, as long as they're rooted at enough nodes. They are so fun to grow this way and end up looking dainty and elegant.
This was fantastic! I really love knowing how these plants first came to the market, a little about the way the grow in the wild-everything you covered in this video was the perfect dose of knowledge. Definitely liked and subscribed and I can’t wait to see more! Well done!
I got me a Verrucosum last year from a plant shop for 5 Euro ! Ever since it has been my favourite Philo, it's sized up really quickly on just a wooden stake. Now it has three vines, one of them will leave hanging from the pot to see what happens (Inspired by yours😅) Verrucosum is a must have! Thanks for the mini documentary, really informative!
I literally just got myself a philodendron verrucosum dark form ! This video makes me even more excited to have it and care for it! Thanks my friend! 💖
I just got this philodendron from a shop that has plants too. Got a small plant but I was lucky to find one with 2 plants in that small pot. When I was reading about the plant when I came home I decided that I'll try and train one to grow on a wood trellis and one I'll let it crawl. Researching online I noticed that is not easy plant to grow so I wonder how will it go. I transplanted them and made potting soil my self . Happy to say I have one new leaf on both plants in just a week. I am happy :D Thank you for information.
C'est passionnant ! Merci pour le travail de recherche et le partage de tes expériences et le partage de tes magnifiques spécimens ! ça me donne l'envie d'essayer même ici, en Belgique 🙄☺💚
I acquired the classic form and Splendid in four inch pots last year. I cut them up by node & leaf and attempted to water prop. cups in a clear bin. Splendid did great & are now in semihydro growing up a moss poles. Over the course of 10 weeks, The Classic molded, dropped all its leaves, & stems rotted away. That slow death really burned me for Verrucosum. I may be up to try again in the year... once I've stopped mourning -LoL.
Interesting! I should look to see if there's an affordable variant that grows in colder climates (I live in San Francisco, some aroids can be hard to grow here likely due to the usual max outdoor temp being in the typical indoor office room temp. Noticed this year some are doing better as we've had several lot more days above 70F then the last few years.)
Thank you for this great trove - I just about killed mine (breaking my heart) by overwatering. I thought that being tropical, loving the moisture, they would love more than they do. I hope I've discovered my mistake in time - they are gorgeous!
With most aroids it’s about finding an equal balance of water and oxygen. So if you’re an over waterer, consider a media that is more aerated and would dry o it quicker😁
There’s still plenty of action in the aroid community, but the absolute CRAZE that happened during covid that resulted in sky high prices and demand is definitely over.
Haha! I meant the short time during Covid when everyone wanted to rarest and most expensive plants and prices/demand were through the roof. Now not so much.
@@plantgayforlife my veru lost all it's leaves last summer, trying it's best now to come back. Had some challenges as well with Melano-crisis haha and philo luxurians, they're so dramatic.
Great video! One difference that really confused me for a while was nangaritense and fuzzy petiole. Especially when one plant is labeled as "nangaritense fuzzy petiole" Haa!
My absolute favorite plant. Can you post a link to the chart of different types of verrus that is shown in the beginning? I would love to have a print of that.
Hey, I just looked on Etsy and the shop Tobancay has exactly your looking for!! Hope this helps 😊 If you want to look at other sellers just type in Philodendron Verrucosum varieties wall art!
Great video as ever! Verrucosum is still one of my favourite plants of all time. So interesting that there is such variability in the species as with so many Anthurium. I wonder if that is the case because plants get cut off from each other due to the nature of the ecosystems they grow in and the mountainous terrain. I remember Tom Croat saying in an interview how different some members of the same species were when he collected them from areas adjacent to each other. Also I wonder if that’s why there are so many subspecies of Rhipsalis baccifera from the same region although I know it became naturalised in Africa too and many subspecies are from there too 🤔Plants are amazing intelligent organisms!Love your educational videos as much as your hilarious ones! To 5K subscribers and beyond 🚀🚀🚀 🫶🪴
Thanks! I wonder if it has to do with endemism. An endemic bird or insect may only pollinate certain plants with certain traits in very specific areas. Meanwhile, maybe a passing migratory bird drops some seeds in another area of a different altitude and rainy/dry season duration. Then over millions of years a plant of the same species now has 2 distinct variations or subspecies. Just a thought, I’m no expert on this😅
It's actually just five species that were thought to be distinct from Philodendron verrucosum. Not too uncommon especially for wide-spread aroid species. Without molecular data, I don't think this species will be resolved in the near future
@plantgayforlife ok I will try that. It's about 2 feet tall about 2yrs and the stem is only a lil over a quarter inch, the biggest leaf is only 3 inches. Should I just cut em and regrow?
I’m sure today’s botanists are not confused about verrucosum since most of this confusion and reanalyzing took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. Thank those who came before us who studied these species for decades.
hmmm mine verrucosum is growing outdoor in full sun , definitely the ugly version form , the ones in shade look better , fyi mine fave plant of the philo species , no variegated nor crazy form can top it , lol
This is one of the most temperamental plants ever. I cannot get this plant to grow. It is a spidermite magnet. Almost seems like mites are inbred into the plant.
@@plantgayforlife I have several alocasias that have done well even with mites. At least I get huge leaves. This poor Verrucosum has not done well. I finally chopped it up last night and applied some hormones. I will not purchase this plant again if it dies.
I would love more of these videos discussing the history and range of our beloved plants
I’m always open ears on recommendations😁
@@plantgayforlife I second this motion!! I'm going to watch it again for the third time because this is one of my favorites and I had no idea...
Such a beautiful video. Please make more of such videos it’s like watching Nat Geo on Aroids with a cool host.
Thanks! And I totally didn’t just google “who is Nat Geo?”🤣 National Geographic duh Jake!

@@plantgayforlife oooh. Yes. Ok I agree with the statement now.

One of the divas, the Veru-Cry-Cry

What would be an interesting video is one that covers the once holy grail of philodendrons - philodendron spiritu sanctus.

Yes, I listed the 5 publications botanists initially thought were distinct from verrucosum.
I'm not sure why this plant in particular confused botanists, surely there was confusion for other species too?
Absolutely
Just got my baby Verrucosum let’s just say I love him more than he loves me 💔💔
They’re fussy! Dont beat yourself up
Spectacular!!! 👏 Thanks again for feeding the plant Nerd in me.😻
My pleasure!😌
My veru grows like a snail
Try boosting the light and fertilizer, and keep it moist at all times😉
@plantgayforlife ok I will try that. It's about 2 feet tall about 2yrs and the stem is only a lil over a quarter inch, the biggest leaf is only 3 inches. Should I just cut em and regrow?
You can propagate each node of the plant in a prop box and they will grow new plants:)
botanist here, i don't know any of my colleagues who are in any way confused about this. maybe it's a us-people thing and a question of education ;)
I’m sure today’s botanists are not confused about verrucosum since most of this confusion and reanalyzing took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. Thank those who came before us who studied these species for decades.

It absolutely is a spider mite magnet. But so are alocasias and people insist on growing those as houseplants 😝
