As the years have gone by, I stopped using a lot of makeup. I learned how to say no back in my 30’s. I was so involved at Church, work, son’s school- wearing myself out. I was complaining to my mother about everything I had to do and I didn’t want to do it. She said why don’t you say no. I replied I don’t know. She pressed me with why don’t you say no until I said I guess I am afraid people won’t like me if I say no. She said then they are not your friends. She was so right! I began to say no and people still liked me. I was 30 at the time. Am now 70. It was and still is a freeing feeling. No obligation. I love you two! You can feel the love and respect for each other come through the video. Always great content!❤
I will never quit folding clothes. I don’t want to wear wrinkled clothes. I don’t iron much anymore. I have a steamer to use if I only need to use it for a certain outfit. Crafting--over the years I've tried many things, from drawing to cake decorating to pottery. I've happily settled on sewing, and recently donated all of my crafting supplies to a local non-profit organization that works with kids. It felt good both to free up my home of the "clutter," and to help someone to possibly discover their love of creating.

It has been a gift to see her be vulnerable through the decluttering process as a woman of a different generation & to see her get more comfortable on camera. It has helped to guide me in supporting my own mom. I love the Shannon & Kathy videos! I would love to see some painting tutorials with both of you for newbies, hobby enthusiasts, etc. How did you both get into painting?
Thanks for another uplifting video. One of the many things I’ve quit doing is sending out Christmas cards, saves me so much stress and anxiety! Shannon you are so blessed to have such a sweet relationship with your mom and to be able to live near each other. Thanks for sharing her with us! 🤗😘❤️🙏🏻
I quit replying immidiatly to messages that emotionally upset me. It's so much better to respond after a few deep breaths/a good night sleep with a "cool head" and calm thoughts. Love your videos and am always happy to see your mom in them❤☺️
I don’t do so many things that I used to before retirement 😊. I now do more things I enjoy instead. I do craft but I don’t fold many of my clothes anymore. My work out clothes, underwear I don’t fold. I don’t have dresser drawers anymore, I have shelving with bins. I use one bath towel per week now and hang to dry. I don’t buy chemical cleaners. I never wore high heels. I don’t wear make up. I do work out with fitbody boot camp 4 or 5 times per week to keep mobility and bone density. I am 61 years old so important. I love thrifting but I’m careful with what I bring home and I will also look for others in my life. I’ve stopped cleaning my house when it is already clean ish 😊. So many things to stop so we can do the things we enjoy
I’ve quit overdoing my “hostess role” when I have house guests. I live in Scottsdale, so friends and family love to visit in the winter months. My current policy is ask and have on had my guests breakfast preferences. Breakfast here is “on your own”. Lunch I am well stocked for salads and sandwiches again “fix it like you like it”. And finally I make and serve dinner. Historically I did 3 meals a day from scratch! Exhausting. People still love coming and I think they feel more relaxed and “at home” with my more casual relaxed style.
Thank you for putting out videos that are intelligent, well-thought out, witty, and on target. There are several youtubers out there that need you to tutor!!
I quit buying greeting cards. No more birthday/anniversary/Christmas/etc cards. Not sure how much money it's saving me but it's saving my mental health not having to worry about getting the perfect card in time to mail it before the event.
Very helpful. I do however, find ironing therapeutic. Its a mindless chore that I find relaxing so I think it counts toward making me calm and thoughtful.
I think while everyone is so busy quitting people, and things, I am headed in the opposite direction. I really don’t like all these UA-camrs telling you when to end a relationship. Why not rebuild some stalled relationships. The world needs caring, non judgement people not too ready too quit too early. I love coloring my hair, painting my nails, wearing some makeup and hopefully presenting my best self to the people I meet each day. In essence, don’t be too quick to stop things but perhaps add good things, exercise, nurturing old relationships and seeing all the good that we have in our lives. Maybe focus more on those we can help in this old world and take the focus off the ourselves. Just an opinion from a 76 yr old lady who wants more of everything this wonderful world has to offer and be of service to others. We are so blessed to live in free countries, with plenty of everything. I enjoy your Mother daughter videos very much. Blessing. Love to all, Linda
Hi Linda, yes you can look at this a lot of different ways. I guess what we are saying is the same you you are, essentially quit doing things that are distracting you from what makes you happy. If those things make you happy then that is what you should do. I quit painting my nails because it took time and I realized I didn't really like doing it, my mom quit coloring her hair because it was literally burning her scalp and she realized it was very bad for her and she was only doing it because she felt she had to. Also this video was what the subscribers commented that they quit doing. Something to ponder is if we quit doing a lot of things that take time and money maybe that opens the door to help more people. =)
I love you tips and advice! I am a 62 year old mom to one son and 4 daughters and I’m always working with them to declutter and organize and we work well together like the two of you!
I just want to thank the both of you. I’ve been following you, Shannon from the beginning and you’ve helped me so much. I remember your mum being reluctant getting rid of things, what a change, nothings safe. You both make me smile and I look forward to your videos. Thank you both, from Alison Wales uk
Hi ladies. I feel so balanced and healthy after watching this. Over 90% of this stuff I let go of a long time ago. I bought my first car new in 1979, kept it 10 years and bought better quality used cars since. Social media can be poisonous. If you find yourself disagreeing arguing etc. It's time to walk away. Same with the news, and tv. Thank you so much. Enjoyed it
I absolutely love your videos!! It gets me cleaning out every room in the house of things I don’t need! Donating to a thrift shop that spays & neuters cats & dogs!! I do this once a month & always have a few bags full!! Thank you!!😊
I love watching the two of you together. I quit getting my nails done and having my hair colored. I do both at home and sane money but most importantly, I save TIME!
Yes! I fold my underwear! Lights/darks, etc. The order looks great in my drawers (different drawers daywear and nightwear). Folding keeps the space for order and hanging, light to dark color coding (keeping blacks and navy separate) helps in decision making in the morning. Keeping my wardrobe with only things I want for quick decision making, and makes decision making easier.
What a great video. I can honestly say I have quit a lot of things that you had said in this video. On February 4th, 2021, I had stopped coloring my hair. Now that I have my natural color my hair is healthy, have more shine and I am saving a lot of money and time. I am always getting compliments now on my color and cut. I just had a yard sale over the weekend and had decluttered my home, especially my attic. I have always been an organized person with my job and home so managing my home has always been easy for me. My life is peaceful and calming at the age of 67.
Basically you quit "being uptight". I love your videos. Cherish your mom, I lost mine in May unexpectedly and we had such a close relationship. Keep up the great videos.
You two make a dynamic duo. 😊 Thanks for bringing a smile to my day. I truly enjoy videos like this that add confirmation to what I have already decluttered in my life and also give ideas that I had not considered.
My family quit buying holiday gifts for all the adults in the family. We instead just buy ONE $25 gift and play Dirty Santa, which is so much fun! I just use all the money I would have spent on family and use it for someone who actually needs it, like foster kid wish lists.
Love the comment about quitting immediately returning texts. Im in a group text with friends and I swear its like if I don't text back within the hour they act like I died. I usually just don't text back cause I don't feel like talking all the time. its exhausting lol
I quit doing my family's laundry. My husband and I both work outside the home, and my almost 10 year old kiddo knows how to do laundry. We're all responsible for our own clothes. Women are often expected to be in charge of their entire family's laundry, but it doesn't have to be that way. Besides, it's a basic life skill that kids need to learn.
Two things I have never done: apologize for the way my house looks and say "Make yourself at home." You never know what people do at home and you probably don't want to know.
I grew up with used cars but when I got married, my husband was used to new cars. So, we juggled car pymts when the kids were little. But now as empty nesters, we've reverted back to used car status, LOL After watching this, I decided to...Quit the "idea" of ironing. Cycling away on my indoor bike, I glanced at the ironing board & couldn’t remember the last time I used it for ironing. I use it as drying rack, & it's always so wobbly and inefficient. I'm donating it tomorrow along with the iron. I will eventually buy a drying rack like yours, Shannon😊 Interacting with y'all is the best! Have a wonderful week!🙋♀️ P.S. My daughter declutters her apartment regularly now. Yay! And she loves it😊
I quit doing all that stuff without realizing it no coffee no nails only shower and wash NY hair every 4 days hardly look at face book only family I look at when it pops up took a hundred pieces of clothes haven't cut my hair since covid no yard sells fantastic ideas you two have ❤
If you get thing nearly dry or straight from the dryer hang them straight onto coat hangers, never again have to iron. I got rid of my iron and board nearly 5 years ago and it was a blessing. I have never needed it ever again.
Love hanging out with you gals! You entertain and inspire at the same time. I was nodding along with this list. I feel validated about the many things I have also given up. If I were to add one thing I didn’t hear it is that I quit going to home shows. I leave my perfectly fine home in the morning, go tour a bunch of super beautiful homes and return to my home feeling dissatisfied by my home! I can’t have that!
Hi Shannon! I love your videos and watching you and your mom, you two make me laugh, I love it. You have alot of great tips for all of us and keep us motivated to declutter our lives! So glad I found your channel!
I have wavy hair and it takes me less than one minute to cut it. I just divide it in two parts and go whack whack across the bottom and it's done. There may be a few stray ones that I clip later to even it up. With wavy hair it really doesn't matter if you cut it perfectly straight or not, it all blends together.
I quit going out to lunch during the work week. I bring my lunch instead and only go out to celebrate a coworker’s birthday or retirement. It has saved me a lot of money and calories. I also used to go window shopping during my lunch break to decompress and inevitably would spend money on something I didn’t need. I stopped doing that too and instead read a book or catch up on work so I don’t have to stay late. And sometimes I watch you ladies here on UA-cam!
I love that! When I used to work an office job it was mandatory we took an hour lunch break and I always brought my lunch and ate it in about 10 minutes so I would use the left over time to walk around the block a few times and wow it was such a great way to get in some exercise.
How long is your lunch break? There is no way in hell I would even have enough time to leave my building and come back on time lol. I get 30min and I’m rushing to get to the microwave before everyone else does lol.
@@lovingsunshine3515 we have the option of putting two 15 minute breaks together with a one hour lunch and that is the option I take so I have 1 1/2 hour lunch break
@@valerie718 that sounds so nice. I work part time so I only get a 30min lunch break. But at my last job working full time, my employer would never allow any of us to take the two 15min break in conjunction with the regular 30min lunch break. It was a school and we were assigned to be somewhere at a certain time.
I fold my underwear. I can't not do it, I tried, it made me crazy. If you've every watched or listened to Cas from Clutterbug, I'm a definite cricket and need things organized.
Haha! She was actually joking that that was her previous profession. But we know that people wear heels for all kinds of reasons, some people just like them too =)
I really like the idea of "Quit trying to convince people You're right" I plan to apply to my life immediately. Most of the time people just have to find out for themselves.
I just LOVE your videos! You and your Mom are like Lucy and Ethel! I enjoy your tips but the best parts of the videos are when your Mom inserts some crazy comment - like the stripper one🤣💙
Something I’ve done much less of I shopping for a hobby (did this when I lived alone even if I didn’t buy anything simply because I liked going out) and now I go thrifting much less frequently than I did a few months ago. Our Goodwill is right next to the grocery store and I used to stop in to check if they had anything new. Well that time adds up, and the days I spend at home all day are much more productive
I quit ironing a while ago, my iron and I are estranged at this point LOL. Your mom's comment about the stripper totally cracked me up! Tell her I'm an underwear rotater, she's not alone. I quit getting my hair colored, saving time and money.
Great list! The hair cut/style is an interesting one. That completely depends on your hair type, I've discovered through experience. I had a pixie cut for over 10 years. Yes, I had to have it cut every 5 weeks which was expensive. But on the daily, it was the easiest hairstyle in the world. Towel dried, threw in one product, used my fingers to style. Literally a 2 minute process after my shower. Not to mention the tiny bit of shampoo and conditioner. For me, the time and hassle saved was well worth the expense of getting it cut more often. I grew it long over these past few years and hate it. My hair is VERY thick. So it takes a ton of product to try to tame it, and even then it looks terrible. I refuse to spend any time with heating tools, so it's only air dried. The amount of hair in the drain to be cleaned out, the hair on the floor to constantly clean up. Then it's soooo hot on my neck, so having to always have things with me to put it up (and putting hair up too often causes hair loss at the hairline). Having hair brushes and combs for the first time in years. Ugh. So for me, the long hair is way more time consuming, way more bothersome, way too much to think about.
I’ve quit a lot of things but I like to decorate my house so I won’t get rid of the decor bins because it would cost too much to replace them. Good job!!
😊 I have several "spots" where I have clothes I don't/can't wear anymore as they don't fit.. I could free up space aka declutter if I just stop saving them "just in case".. love listening to the two of you, your fun interactions and good suggestions!!
I have fallen down the Dollar Tree crafting rabbit hole. I have a room full of Dollar Tree sh*t to make fall and Halloween decorations. I have done several and now feel like I’m suffocating when I look in the room. I now have the urge to load up my trunk and head to goodwill to dump. I go all in and usually regret it. I have the “if I don’t buy it now it will be gone” mentality. 😭
I have not had cable in over a decade... I don't miss it. I stopped buying CDs and DVDs and Blu rays. In fact, I gave 97 percent of them away. I am down to two bins per season... spring, summer, fall, and winter. I have a rule... the one in and one out rule.
I love these videos, and hope you continue to make this a series! I enjoy the relationship you two have, thank you for sharing that on screen with us! I already do a lot of the things mentioned. Some things I quit to add to the list were buying certain clothing items online (as some I just prefer trying them on in person) that I know they will more than likely not fit me and basically not buying clothes without trying them on first, quit wearing sunglasses (because I have a small head and can never seem to find any that fit, nor do I really go to places where I need them and if I do, I just borrow my husband's sunglasses or baseball cap), quit owning multiples of certain products I don't need extras of, I quit wearing shorts and capris and flip flops due to uncomfort, quit blow drying my hair (my hair is super long, but now I just let it air dry), quit wearing scoopy/low revealing and open necklines in clothing items, quit wearing a certain style of patterns/graphics in clothing items, quit impulse purchasing at big box stores, quit going into thrift stores or clothing stores that don't have dressing rooms (unless I know my exact size and I tried the item on and it fits), quit buying uncomfortable fabric in clothing, and quit trying to be "Pinterest Perfect" or "Social Media Highlight Perfection", to name a few!

I would love to see some painting tutorials with both of you for newbies, hobby enthusiasts, etc. How did you both get into painting?
I love seeing your mother's transformation! She seems more relaxed as she has purged things from her life.
Yes, good idea to quit “shoulding” on ourselves. It is freeing.
Thanks for another uplifting video. One of the many things I’ve quit doing is sending out Christmas cards, saves me so much stress and anxiety! Shannon you are so blessed to have such a sweet relationship with your mom and to be able to live near each other. Thanks for sharing her with us! 🤗😘❤️🙏🏻
That plus a rare occasion (like a condolence or sympathy card) I also stopped buying greeting cards.
I quit replying immidiatly to messages that emotionally upset me. It's so much better to respond after a few deep breaths/a good night sleep with a "cool head" and calm thoughts.
Love your videos and am always happy to see your mom in them❤☺️
Yes!!!!! Frees you up about having to select and choose🙂
Thanks for the video
Your mom looks great!
I quit driving fast because speeding tickets are expensive.
😊
Bright pink is your moms color!! Love you two together. What a blessing!
To your wonderful community: THANK YOU for commenting on what you have quit. I don’t feel alone in all the things I’ve quit doing over the years.
Thank you so much to everyone =)
I’ve quit overdoing my “hostess role” when I have house guests. I live in Scottsdale, so friends and family love to visit in the winter months. My current policy is ask and have on had my guests breakfast preferences. Breakfast here is “on your own”. Lunch I am well stocked for salads and sandwiches again “fix it like you like it”. And finally I make and serve dinner. Historically I did 3 meals a day from scratch! Exhausting.
People still love coming and I think they feel more relaxed and “at home” with my more casual relaxed style.
I believe it. Good for you!
Thank you for putting out videos that are intelligent, well-thought out, witty, and on target. There are several youtubers out there that need you to tutor!!
I appreciate that!
Love that!
I just want to thank the both of you. I’ve been following you, Shannon from the beginning and you’ve helped me so much. I remember your mum being reluctant getting rid of things, what a change, nothings safe. You both make me smile and I look forward to your videos. Thank you both, from Alison Wales uk
Thank you so much for being here and I am happy we can make you smile =)
I just built a tiny home and it has me realizing how much I don’t use and wasted
I love you two!!! I do fold all thing, but that means NOTHING needs to be ironed, wash, fold, put away! ready to wear. that is for every day wear..
Thank you!!😊
I only use dawn cleaner and vinegar for cleaning only
Stopped colouring my hair after after 40 years and I love the natural grey.
Your mother is beautiful!
I fold & rotate my underwear as well. Shannon, you are so blessed to have the relationship you do with your mama.❤
Thank you! We are able to laugh about almost everything.
For things that I do and don’t want to keep.
I love your Mom! She's hilarious and just herself. ❤ I love authentic people.
Love the comment about quitting immediately returning texts. Im in a group text with friends and I swear its like if I don't text back within the hour they act like I died. I usually just don't text back cause I don't feel like talking all the time. its exhausting lol
I love the relationship you two have. Reminds me of me and my mom. We are blessed!
I agree with all these things. I quit doing these things several years ago. Life is so much easier and cheaper !
Two things I have never done: apologize for the way my house looks and say "Make yourself at home." You never know what people do at home and you probably don't want to know.
Haha good tip!
I grew up with used cars but when I got married, my husband was used to new cars. So, we juggled car pymts when the kids were little. But now as empty nesters, we've reverted back to used car status, LOL
After watching this, I decided to...Quit the "idea" of ironing. Have a wonderful week!🙋♀️
P.S. My daughter declutters her apartment regularly now. Yay! And she loves it😊
Yay for your daughter decluttering! =)
Love you ladies! Shannon, no need to apologize for a messy home; if it ain't messy than it's NOT a home! God bless you and yours!!
Gotta have black pants! Good idea about laundry..thank you both for great ideas!!
I quit doing all that stuff without realizing it no coffee no nails only shower and wash NY hair every 4 days hardly look at face book only family I look at when it pops up took a hundred pieces of clothes haven't cut my hair since covid no yard sells fantastic ideas you two have ❤
Whats my prize❤️👍
Love your videos - I’m doing my ironing while watching it! 😂
Love that!
Yey, a video with you ladies! Makes my day with all your great inspiration!❤
If you get thing nearly dry or straight from the dryer hang them straight onto coat hangers, never again have to iron. I got rid of my iron and board nearly 5 years ago and it was a blessing. I have never needed it ever again.
I do the same thing! I try to hang my things right away.
You two are a breath of fresh air! Love your down-to-earth honesty.
I just love your mum ❤️
Love hanging out with you gals! You entertain and inspire at the same time. I was nodding along with this list. I feel validated about the many things I have also given up.
If I were to add one thing I didn’t hear it is that I quit going to home shows. I leave my perfectly fine home in the morning, go tour a bunch of super beautiful homes and return to my home feeling dissatisfied by my home! I can’t have that!
I love organizing so I fold everything and the drawers have to be neat.
One thing I won’t quit is watching your videos ❣️Great to see the two of you made my Sunday ❗️👋🏻
Yay! Thank you!
I LOVE when you and your Mom are together talking! 💖💖💖💖
So much fun! Your mom and I have a lot in common. I rotate, too! 😂❤
Exactly, me too!
I fold my underwear. I can't not do it, I tried, it made me crazy. If you've every watched or listened to Cas from Clutterbug, I'm a definite cricket and need things organized.
Same. When I open my underwear drawer it's so nice to see them neatly folded and lined up. I'm a definite cricket too. And I love your cat. God bless!
I love how your mom went straight to stipper as the profession that wears heels.
Haha! She was actually joking that that was her previous profession. But we know that people wear heels for all kinds of reasons, some people just like them too =)
I really like the idea of "Quit trying to convince people You're right" I plan to apply to my life immediately. Most of the time people just have to find out for themselves.
I fold stuff because I don't iron it and it fits in the drawers easier!
I just LOVE your videos! You and your Mom are like Lucy and Ethel! I enjoy your tips but the best parts of the videos are when your Mom inserts some crazy comment - like the stripper one🤣💙
Haha I was debating if I should leave that comment in or if it would somehow offend someone. LOL
Good job!!
I quit all this stuff too- except ironing, because I never did that! I hope my kids can skip some of these traps altogether.
You two are so fun to watch. Keep up the good work!
I have not had cable in over a decade... I don't miss it. I stopped buying CDs and DVDs and Blu rays. In fact, I gave 97 percent of them away. I am down to two bins per season... spring, summer, fall, and winter. I have a rule... the one in and one out rule.
Another fun video with you and your mum😊.
😊 thank you
I love these videos, and hope you continue to make this a series!
I love to fold my laundry!
Love your relationship with your mom!
I'm with you on the ironing. I hang most of my tops and push them all to one side so they pretty much iron themselves.
