Mama, that coral shirt is the perfect color for you!
Yes she looks amazing in that shirt
I thought the same. I love the colour.
Yes, so pretty!
Absolutely agree
Yes, and it looks so pretty with your hair, Kathy😊
I can’t say enough how much I like the videos with the two of you.
Your honesty is great and really makes me think.I am 62 yrs old so I can relate to a lot of how your Mom thinks and all the stuff she use to have. You two really do make a difference with suggesting how to limit the amount of things. Also, it’s fun to watch you two interact.
Yes I quit TV period! Best decision ever made!
I just love watching you and mom! Mom’s sense of humor is the best, she is so honest and off the cuff! You are both so real and beautiful❤️
Life changes for the better when we stop living for society's "shoulds" and start living for ourselves ❤️
Freedom!
@@barbaramartinez7705 ❤️❤️❤️
Totally agree!
@@T.T.M.60 ❤️❤️❤️
A balance of thinking of others & living more simply
I love watching you guys together. What a blessing to have this close relationship.❤
Yes! I love watching this channel!
Yes, they are blessed!❤😊😊❤
I used to enjoy decorating for holidays when I had children at home. But once they grew up I do very minimal decorating.
I quit getting magazines. I spend time in the library and sometimes look at ones I like there without having the clutter. I really simplify seasonal decor.
That's a great idea!
Library is a great resource so many people are not taking advantage of. They get funded with more usage, too. You can check out your periodicals and get them delivered to your kindle too. It’s great!
My quits:
I quit buying drinks every time I left the house (gas stations, drive thrus). I just make sure my whole family packs a drink every time we leave.
I quit buying eyeshadow. My sisters get too many in their subscription boxes and kindly pass brand new products to me. Or I'll just go without.
I quit buying fancy coffees to show up to events with "to get me through" it has become more of a vibe/look
I quit social media (except youtube)
I quit trying to acquire ALL the farm animals and only keep the ones I actually enjoy
I quit car notes
I quit flying on airplanes period
I quit ALL chain mail "pass it on" emails, texts many years ago (sorry Gma)
I quit fundraisers that I was only purchasing from out of guilt and didn't need anything from
I quit all essential oils and the smell good companies. I'll buy 1 candle at a time that I enjoy and when it's gone I purchase 1 when I feel like it
I quit all smell good home sprays/plug ins/wax warmers
I quit washing my hair daily
I quit carbs and sugar (hello carnivore)
I quit using "being an introvert or shy" as a reason to not make new friends and connections
I quit trying to fix everyone else's problems and find them solutions every time they vented to me. I now just let them vent and try to be an ear.
I quit trying to make goodie bags at EVERY holiday and for every child I know.
I quit buying cards. I'll just tell them happy birthday & save the person the guilt of throwing the card away.
I quit feeling obligated to purchase apparel for every club/group I'm involved in.
Quit trying to have the 'perfect life/perfect body/be the perfect wife/perfect daughter/perfect mother/perfect employee etc., etc. Just live it, love it and enjoy everyday warts and all!
As an older person I really don’t want gifts anymore. I’d rather have the gift of time from those who care about me!
Yes. Don’t need to bring more stuff into the house. If I want something would rather buy that specific item myself than get a not quite right gift.
Agree, I just don't want the stuff.
I fold my underwear. I can't not do it, I tried, it made me crazy. If you've every watched or listened to Cas from Clutterbug, I'm a definite cricket and need things organized.
Same. When I open my underwear drawer it's so nice to see them neatly folded and lined up. I'm a definite cricket too. And I love your cat. God bless!
I quit watching TV years ago . Best thing I ever dod for myself
For the past several weeks, when I do my weekly grocery shopping I've been thinking "salads and a soup". I don't need to make a list (shocking). I remember the few staples I always need, eggs, coffee, etc. and pick items up as I shop that will make good salads and a soup. It's healthful, economical, has ended food waste, and offers endless variations. I enjoy all your videos but especially those with your mom.
That's a great idea!
@@shannontorrens1 Thanks!
Ironing is the only thing I can’t stop. I am a quilter and the sewing room has an ironing board up, i buy less fast fashion and make my clothes (making a comeback with younger people)
I'm just starting this journey at 71. Your videos are so encouraging. I've been decluttering 5 minutes at a time. It hit me that "when" I finally get through everything....there will be a lot less to declutter. 💐
❤
Thanks for the video
Your mom looks great!
I quit driving fast because speeding tickets are expensive.
😊
I worked in the salon industry for almost 4 decades and wore makeup, acrylic nails, heels, dyed my hair etc. I retired due to healthy issues a year and a half ago and stopped it all. My nails are healthy and my now silver hair is growing like crazy. I do still wear makeup if we go out for dinner but that’s it. So much easier.
It's fun to get dressed up every once in a while, but I always saw all the beauticians looking amazing and wondered how they have the energy to do it everyday.
I quit driving (no car 🚗 now) - I have public transport nearby & that is a huge saving. Kathy you look beautiful in that pink blouse 👚 Shannon this was such fun. I’m 64 so I relate to almost everything your Mum has quit !! I quit caring what people think I should or shouldn’t do & how I look or don’t look 👀 🤣🤣 lol ❤
What a huge savings to not have a car! I hope you are doing well =)
@@shannontorrens1 all well thanks so much! - this coming Friday (evening) we start our celebrations for the Jewish New Year called ״Rosh Hashana״ - I will be with one of my married daughters & family in Jerusalem ❤️🇮🇱🙏
I have also either quit or have never done many of the things you mentioned...except for procrastination. It's the one thing I am really good at! 🤣😂
I'm so happy to hear that so many people have let go of doing things that are really unimportant in the grand scheme of life. ♥♥♥
I have really simplified my house in the last few years. It's so much easier since I'm having health issues.
Your mother is beautiful!
Thanks for another uplifting video. One of the many things I’ve quit doing is sending out Christmas cards, saves me so much stress and anxiety! Shannon you are so blessed to have such a sweet relationship with your mom and to be able to live near each other. Thanks for sharing her with us! 🤗😘❤️🙏🏻
That plus a rare occasion (like a condolence or sympathy card) I also stopped buying greeting cards.
Thank you for putting out videos that are intelligent, well-thought out, witty, and on target. There are several youtubers out there that need you to tutor!!
I appreciate that!
Coming up next week...Kathy in high heels on the pole! 😂😂😂 I love you two so much!!
Haha that has always been a joke in our family.
Very helpful. I do however, find ironing therapeutic. Its a mindless chore that I find relaxing so I think it counts toward making me calm and thoughtful.
Two things I have never done: apologize for the way my house looks and say "Make yourself at home." You never know what people do at home and you probably don't want to know.
Haha good tip!
I will always buy natural fabrics, and iron them. I do NOT like synthetics.
I just LOVE your videos! You and your Mom are like Lucy and Ethel! I enjoy your tips but the best parts of the videos are when your Mom inserts some crazy comment - like the stripper one🤣💙
Haha I was debating if I should leave that comment in or if it would somehow offend someone. LOL
I quit decorating for the seasons a long time ago. I will change napkins in kitchen to go with the season. I painted my nails only a couple of times. I did not like it. I always buy used cars. As the years have gone by, I stopped using a lot of makeup. I learned how to say no back in my 30’s. I was so involved at Church, work, son’s school- wearing myself out. I was complaining to my mother about everything I had to do and I didn’t want to do it. She said why don’t you say no. I replied I don’t know. She pressed me with why don’t you say no until I said I guess I am afraid people won’t like me if I say no. She said then they are not your friends. She was so right! I began to say no and people still liked me. I was 30 at the time. Am now 70. It was and still is a freeing feeling. No obligation. I love you two! You can feel the love and respect for each other come through the video. Always great content!❤
Surprised coloring hair didn’t come up. That’s one of the first things I quit, trying to live with less waste, especially plastic waste. Love the video. Thank you!
I didn't include that since we mentioned it in the original video, but lots of people stopped coloring their hair =)
Two years ago, I quit cable, tv, got rid of internet. Living in peace & quiet is priceless….
You two make a dynamic duo. 😊 Thanks for bringing a smile to my day. I truly enjoy videos like this that add confirmation to what I have already decluttered in my life and also give ideas that I had not considered.
I had to laugh because I no longer do all of these things!! I’m 78 years old and there is so much more to life than most of these things! Thanks for this video! ❤️
I absolutely love your videos!! It gets me cleaning out every room in the house of things I don’t need! Donating to a thrift shop that spays & neuters cats & dogs!! I do this once a month & always have a few bags full!! Thank you!!😊
Hi Shannon! I love your videos and watching you and your mom, you two make me laugh, I love it. You have alot of great tips for all of us and keep us motivated to declutter our lives! So glad I found your channel!
I think Kathy’s insight is invaluable! As a woman in her 60’s we need her wisdom, experience & her voice. It has been a gift to see her be vulnerable through the decluttering process as a woman of a different generation & to see her get more comfortable on camera. It has helped to guide me in supporting my own mom. I love the Shannon & Kathy videos! I would love to see some painting tutorials with both of you for newbies, hobby enthusiasts, etc. How did you both get into painting?
Gift giving has stopped for me. I give and my family will give to charity in each other's name. No wasted money that way and the benefit is 100%.
Just stumbled on to your channel.
..your Mom reminds me so much of my Mom - I miss her so much...25 years. 😢
Best thing I quit that soooo simplified my life: quit working!! I've been retired for 5:years and never once regretted my decision. I finally found the time to purge - and set priorities...so liberating.
I will never quit folding clothes. I don’t want to wear wrinkled clothes. I don’t iron much anymore. I have a steamer to use if I only need to use it for a certain outfit. I quit trying to keep up with the latest decor trends. I decided to switch to a new more neutral style. I just switch out things like throw pillows and a few seasonal accents.
Do what works for you the best not for others .
I quit doing my family's laundry. My husband and I both work outside the home, and my almost 10 year old kiddo knows how to do laundry. We're all responsible for our own clothes. Women are often expected to be in charge of their entire family's laundry, but it doesn't have to be that way. Besides, it's a basic life skill that kids need to learn.
I just want to thank the both of you. I’ve been following you, Shannon from the beginning and you’ve helped me so much. I remember your mum being reluctant getting rid of things, what a change, nothings safe. You both make me smile and I look forward to your videos. Thank you both, from Alison Wales uk
Thank you so much for being here and I am happy we can make you smile =)
I don’t do so many things that I used to before retirement 😊. I now do more things I enjoy instead. I do craft but I don’t fold many of my clothes anymore. My work out clothes, underwear I don’t fold. I don’t have dresser drawers anymore, I have shelving with bins. I use one bath towel per week now and hang to dry. I don’t buy chemical cleaners. I never wore high heels. I don’t wear make up. I do work out with fitbody boot camp 4 or 5 times per week to keep mobility and bone density. I am 61 years old so important. I love thrifting but I’m careful with what I bring home and I will also look for others in my life. I’ve stopped cleaning my house when it is already clean ish 😊. So many things to stop so we can do the things we enjoy
Crafting--over the years I've tried many things, from drawing to cake decorating to pottery. I've happily settled on sewing, and recently donated all of my crafting supplies to a local non-profit organization that works with kids. It felt good both to free up my home of the "clutter," and to help someone to possibly discover their love of creating.
I quit replying immidiatly to messages that emotionally upset me. It's so much better to respond after a few deep breaths/a good night sleep with a "cool head" and calm thoughts.
Love your videos and am always happy to see your mom in them❤☺️
My family quit buying holiday gifts for all the adults in the family. We instead just buy ONE $25 gift and play Dirty Santa, which is so much fun! I just use all the money I would have spent on family and use it for someone who actually needs it, like foster kid wish lists.
I haven't had a TV since 2010 and I haven't missed it for one second. I never have had Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, none of it. I'm sure I'm missing nothing. Maybe some fake news and propaganda. I don't wear makeup, I cut my own hair, I don't iron clothes, I cook all my own food and make my own coffee, I don't pay for any entertainment or movies, etc. If your clothes are wrinkled, hang them in a steamy bathroom. I'm just fine without doing these things.
Yey, a video with you ladies! Makes my day with all your great inspiration!❤
Quit 3/2 1200 SQ ft. Got 1/1 398 SQ ft. Does wonders for the soul.
Me too....
I just built a tiny home and it has me realizing how much I don’t use and wasted
I like folding clothes. They start out messy and then….voila…neat. I think I’ve stopped trying to enlighten anyone about anything. That makes for less fretting. Stop watching TV….mmmm…I like movies and tennis. I straightened my closet and discovered I have 5 blue and white striped shirts, so now I’m going to have only blue and white clothes.
To your wonderful community: THANK YOU for commenting on what you have quit. I don’t feel alone in all the things I’ve quit doing over the years.
Thank you so much to everyone =)
I’ve quit overdoing my “hostess role” when I have house guests. I live in Scottsdale, so friends and family love to visit in the winter months. My current policy is ask and have on had my guests breakfast preferences. Breakfast here is “on your own”. Lunch I am well stocked for salads and sandwiches again “fix it like you like it”. And finally I make and serve dinner. Historically I did 3 meals a day from scratch! Exhausting.
People still love coming and I think they feel more relaxed and “at home” with my more casual relaxed style.
I believe it. Good for you!
So much fun! Your mom and I have a lot in common. I rotate, too! 😂❤
Exactly, me too!
I have not had cable in over a decade... I don't miss it. I stopped buying CDs and DVDs and Blu rays. In fact, I gave 97 percent of them away. I am down to two bins per season... spring, summer, fall, and winter. I have a rule... the one in and one out rule.
Quit self pity and compare oneself with other people.
I love you tips and advice! I am a 62 year old mom to one son and 4 daughters and I’m always working with them to declutter and organize and we work well together like the two of you!
Love that!
I fold & rotate my underwear as well. Shannon, you are so blessed to have the relationship you do with your mama.❤
Thank you! We are able to laugh about almost everything.
I love seeing your mother's transformation! She seems more relaxed as she has purged things from her life.
Quit having a bunch of credit cards. I'm paying the all off and then I'll keep one locked in my safe for medical emergencies or plane tickets.
Love the comment about quitting immediately returning texts. Im in a group text with friends and I swear its like if I don't text back within the hour they act like I died. I usually just don't text back cause I don't feel like talking all the time. its exhausting lol
I quit having a five year plan. If I still want the same things five years from now I would be really disappointed. We should quit over-planning in general, daily journals, life-planners, fridge charts. A calendar and a list is enough for daily life, maybe a spreadsheet for bigger events or goals, but that's it. Also, I've never needed a label maker. 🎉😂❤
10 thumbs up for this idea!
I quit buying greeting cards. No more birthday/anniversary/Christmas/etc cards. Not sure how much money it's saving me but it's saving my mental health not having to worry about getting the perfect card in time to mail it before the event.
But I must add to that you are doing a fab job in encouraging people on a consistent basis 🎉
Oh, I just love your sense of humor! "I quit being a stripper long time ago" 😂Glad you kept that in the video 👍😊About quitting to simplify: I quit making a big variety of meals during the day. Now I just have the same 5-7 meals that I rotate between.
I get judged heavily for getting rid of my wine glasses. I don’t drink wine and only had them as a should in case someone comes over (not that I even have wine to offer!) and after 2 years of this not happening I let go. People still judge me for not having them even when they aren’t drinking wine at my house!
I can so relate to that, Stephanie! Years ago, my SIL visited and was quite angry that I didn't have coffee in the house. I don't drink coffee, my husband (her brother) didn't drink coffee, so I never bought it. Didn't have a coffee maker, wouldn't have known how to use it anyway. I don't believe we need to stock our home with things that occasional visitors might need. I think people should accept what you have to offer or do without. Also, no one has the right to judge how someone else lives. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! LOL ♥
I completely agree with this! If I go to someone's house I make sure to bring whatever I might need and I don't think it ever hurt anyone to drink wine out of a normal cup lol.
I hate sewing. You will never find a needle, button or anything that has to do with sewing, so you won't find even a thread in my home. So, if you come to my house and you need a sewing repair, I will give you GLUE! LOL....
That’s insane! This must be class related.
@@mommalion7028 I think people of all walks of life can be judgmental, but yeah, it could be a rich versus not-so-rich thing.
Stopped colouring my hair after after 40 years and I love the natural grey.
Hey Shannon, thanks for sharing these with us! I have definitely simplified my decor, but I have thought about how time consuming it is to change things out for the seasons! I really need to quit multitasking! I feel like sometimes I'm inefficient when I'm multitasking.💗
I know what you mean. When I was younger I enjoyed all the holiday decor and it made me happy. Now that I am older and an empty nester not so much. LOL
It looks stupid when people apologize for mess ...we all live in ours houses..
Quit complaining (I'm a work in progress).
In 60 years of marriage we have had 1 new car. Always buy used.
😊 I have several "spots" where I have clothes I don't/can't wear anymore as they don't fit.. I could free up space aka declutter if I just stop saving them "just in case".. love listening to the two of you, your fun interactions and good suggestions!!
What a great video. I can honestly say I have quit a lot of things that you had said in this video. On February 4th, 2021, I had stopped coloring my hair. Now that I have my natural color my hair is healthy, have more shine and I am saving a lot of money and time. I am always getting compliments now on my color and cut.
I just had a yard sale over the weekend and had decluttered my home, especially my attic. I have always been an organized person with my job and home so managing my home has always been easy for me. My life is peaceful and calming at the age of 67.
The hairstyle thing though is very dependent on the persons hair. I have very thin fine hair and longer hair took me forever to do. I went back to a pixie and my hair takes about 2 minutes to do compared to 30 minutes every day.
Yes! I completely agree with this. I have had people ask why I have longer hair if I want a simple life and it's so much easier for me to pull my hair back in a bun. When it's shorter I have to do something with it if not I look like a poodle!
I agree with Mom!! I have about 25 pair of underwear. I only have to wash them once a month🎉🎉
This was a great list. You and your mom make quite the team. I burst out laughing when your mom said she quit wearing heels when she stopped being stripper going down the stripper pole! LOL!
I am so happy you got the joke LOL. There were a few people offended LOL. We like to keep it light and silly over in this neck of the woods. =)
I have never had my ears pierced and probably have saved thousands on not buying earrings over 60 years.
Quit mailing Christmas Cards long along ! Such a load lifted to quit trying to keep up with Jones’s
I don’t wear my wedding ring everyday. My husband will ask if I’m married today? Lol. It just doesn’t matter.
I fold stuff because I don't iron it and it fits in the drawers easier!
Spending money to impress other people i don't even like! Lol
You two are so fun to watch. Keep up the good work!
Good video! I got a bunch of couple loads of laundry folded during this time. That’s what I like to do when I watch videos is work on laundry.
Endo. I don’t iron. 😂😂😂😂😂😢😢😢😮😮😮😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
If I could declutter my husband, I could really simplify😀love your videos!
Haha!
Me too 😂.
🤣
I quit writing checks for monthly bills but have everything (with a few exceptions ) automatically withdrawn.
Ha ha. Ironing. I love love cotton but I don’t iron any of it anymore. It does pretty well tho if I just quickly get it out of the dryer and hang it up right away. And some things are fine (still very “cottony” ) if they’re mostly cotton with a touch of spandex or poly etc. Well I love linen also but idc so much about wrinkles anymore.
I also got to where I like my own coffee better than most “out” coffees. Lol. Sometimes also food. I like what I make better than take out…sometimes. Lol. I just noticed some things like why is their French toast so awfully dry? And why am I paying all this money for crappy food? So I go home and make my own Bcuz it will be all soft and gooey like I like it. Lol.
Nonono. Lol. Never gonna quit thrifting tho. But now I really tone it down and limit how much I go and try to be way more intentional about it.
Bwa ha ha. Also no longer searching for a mate. Lmao. Very much so I’m loving just being my own person. And well, the cat mafia already got me anyways. Lol.
I only use dawn cleaner and vinegar for cleaning only
I do love a limited wardrobe
I grew up with used cars but when I got married, my husband was used to new cars. So, we juggled car pymts when the kids were little. But now as empty nesters, we've reverted back to used car status, LOL
After watching this, I decided to...Quit the "idea" of ironing. Cycling away on my indoor bike, I glanced at the ironing board & couldn’t remember the last time I used it for ironing. I use it as drying rack, & it's always so wobbly and inefficient. I'm donating it tomorrow along with the iron. I will eventually buy a drying rack like yours, Shannon😊 Interacting with y'all is the best! Have a wonderful week!🙋♀️
P.S. My daughter declutters her apartment regularly now. Yay! And she loves it😊
Yay for your daughter decluttering! =)
If you get thing nearly dry or straight from the dryer hang them straight onto coat hangers, never again have to iron. I got rid of my iron and board nearly 5 years ago and it was a blessing. I have never needed it ever again.
I do the same thing! I try to hang my things right away.
Another fun video with you and your mum😊.
😊 thank you
Ive quit staying at home doing nothing important. Ive decided Im going to everything im invited to 😅 Ive had a great summer !
Basically you quit "being uptight". I love your videos. Cherish your mom, I lost mine in May unexpectedly and we had such a close relationship. Keep up the great videos.
You ladies look beautiful! I love your relationship and the love bursts through the screen. I miss my mama so much, but my daughter and I are best friends. Love these vids❤
Great video. I have done most of the things on the list. I'd like to quit watching TV but I don't think I could get hubby on board with that. Hopefully when we downsize to our new apartment we will watch less. Now that the kids are adults I have stopped decorating for each season - now it's just Easter (though I'm not sure I'll continue that), Halloween & Christmas. Funnily enough I don't really care about CHristmas Day but I love the season - decorations, food, etc.
Yes, good idea to quit “shoulding” on ourselves. It is freeing.
Great list! The hair cut/style is an interesting one. That completely depends on your hair type, I've discovered through experience. I had a pixie cut for over 10 years. Yes, I had to have it cut every 5 weeks which was expensive. But on the daily, it was the easiest hairstyle in the world. Towel dried, threw in one product, used my fingers to style. Literally a 2 minute process after my shower. Not to mention the tiny bit of shampoo and conditioner. For me, the time and hassle saved was well worth the expense of getting it cut more often. I grew it long over these past few years and hate it. My hair is VERY thick. So it takes a ton of product to try to tame it, and even then it looks terrible. I refuse to spend any time with heating tools, so it's only air dried. The amount of hair in the drain to be cleaned out, the hair on the floor to constantly clean up. Then it's soooo hot on my neck, so having to always have things with me to put it up (and putting hair up too often causes hair loss at the hairline). Having hair brushes and combs for the first time in years. Ugh. So for me, the long hair is way more time consuming, way more bothersome, way too much to think about.
I LOVE you two!!
I love organizing so I fold everything and the drawers have to be neat.
Shannon, this is probably one of the greatest videos ever! ❤
