Thanks to you two gals I have decluttered all my books, my music, my photos, my clothes, the bedroom, the lounge, the 'junk' room!!!! I NO LONGER HAVE A JUNK ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!! I just decluttered the paperwork of my father, who passed away in spring 2022. Recently we paid the last taxes due. I now only keep the last statements and decluttered all the rest. It feels nice that the memory of my father consists of sentimentals and not a huge pile of paperwork.

Getting rid of those papers frees up space in my house and in my brain and heart.

For years I have decluttered my closet at the end of each season. It is the best time to know what you reached for on a regular basis, what clothing stayed in the closet untouched, and what clothing fit the best. Shannon thank you for continually providing great ideas for simplifying our homes. As a 60 something, who has been dealing with a rough year of health issues, it has made me realize I need to declutter even more to make it much easier to take care of my home.

Hi Shannon and Cathy! Watching and listening to you’ll motivates me. I finally got to my photos downsized and ready to scan. I am 70. We used to get film developed and make duplicate/triplicate copies for family, friends and coworkers. And, of course, you end up with a lot of extras. I had a 4 drawer baby chest of drawers full of 50 picture size photo holders and about 6 regular photo holders plus a drawer packed with loose photos and 22 regular photo albums in an armoire. I had 3 huge scrapbooks as well. The chest of drawers and armoire will now be sold. Got rid of about a hefty bag full of pics that were just scenery or people I didn’t know (inherited my grandmother’s 2 photo albums), made a pile for my sister and pile for my oldest niece. I played a game of Concentration by matching up the duplicates-lol. Separated everything into baggies and labeled them. They are ready to be scanned. The scrapbooks had no pics. I threw them out. And I don’t miss them. It took me about 2 months of weekends and nights as I work full-time. A lot of work but well worth it to get 2 pieces of furniture out of the house and have that huge weight lifted off of me!! Love you two! ❤

Hi Shannon and Cathy, over the past 3 years I have decluttered around 80% of items in my home, and garden. It is such a wonderful and freeing feeling, and I do not allow things to re-enter my home to clutter it up again. It is a wonderful way to save money as I don't spend it unless I need to.
My kitchen for example has only what I need, and I store nothing on the bench tops with the exception of my laptop computer in one corner. My toaster and kettle now have a home in one of the cupboards. All cupboards and drawers are all under control with lots of empty spaces, and I store my containers with their lids on. Thank you, ladies, for videos like this as it keeps me in check and accountable for everything that I have, and I am still looking for things to leave my home.

I decluttered my utensil drawers when I was fighting to open or close the drawers. I took the utensils out of the drawers and put them in a box on top of my fridge. As I used an item, I would then put it in the drawer. After 6 months, anything left in the box was donated. For the summer clothes, I used the backwards hanger trick and it worked so well. As I will be switching out to winter clothing soon, anything still on a backwards hanger will be donated. Like you, I have a three ring binder of recipes and I decided to go through all the recipes and any recipe that has a “special” item needed, I already know I won’t want to make as I don’t want to purchase an ingredient that I will only use once. That will reduce the recipes. My only struggle is books…too many books! I’ve declutter those I’ve read or those I know I won’t read. Now I’m left with fiction, non-fiction and cookbooks…not sure where to even start there! They all fit on the (3) bookcases I have so space is not an issue. I find myself reading on my kindle more and not the paper books…any suggestions?

Sometimes you have to play mind games to kick yourself into taking an uncomfortable action. For example, I told myself that some items in my home “are wasted on me” and “deserve” a better home and to “re-home” it is the best thing for the object, the recipient, the planet, and me. My attachment to the item becomes irrelevant and “doing the right thing” makes me feel like I’m doing something good.

Just decluttered most of the bathroom things. So many small tubes & bottles of shampoo, botdy wash, suntan lotion, moisturiser. Emptied them into large bottles so only have four large pump bottles instead of a jumbled mess. Kept two small travel bags. Decluttered brushes & combs, electric hair curlers - one from 1970s with attachments. One pump bottle in shower containing body wash, shampoo & conditioner mixed into one - used for everything - washing & conditioning hair & body. It sits on the grab rail so I can use it sitting in the shower chair as it’s too dangerous to try to reach the shower caddy sitting down after hip operation. I can’t bend down more than 90 degrees (risk of dislocation) so have emptied out bottom shelf of vanity. Not buying any more until items are used up. 48 roll box of toilet paper has lasted two years - on display in pretty paper on rack above toilet. Next will be makeup to declutter - no need to buy more toothpaste or brushes. Careworkers are finished now after six weeks so keeping up with washing, stick vacuuming, & will try floor washing by myself with bucket on a wheelie walker. Removing garbage is the first step in a room. Watching some older cleaning videos Katrina? She mentioned your channel. Love all these helpful videos. Great for motivation & reminders thanks. Oh. And I can’t bring anything new in to the house without something going out. Makes really think when I’m shopping. I look at the item and think. What am I willing to get rid of to bring this in.

You inspired me to sort through my towels and bedding this morning. In 5 minutes I was able to declutter 10 hand towels, 6 washcloths and a comforter. I actually have half a shelf that's empty for the first time! I plan to revisit that closet in the near future to reconsider some other bedding and towels I might be able to get rid of. Thanks for all you do! Have a great day! 😊🐦

I also ordered a few colorful drawer organizers for my desk. I enjoy seeing the cheerful trays whenever I open the drawers, which is quite often.

I used to feel bad that I didn't switch out my seasonal clothing like some people I know. Now I realize that I don't want that many clothes. The extra effort it takes to make space elsewhere in the house for a seasonal wardrobe isn't worth it to me.

Mostly I declutter out of a mood nowadays. I started it years ago, when my spaces just needed to be visually simplified. I get overwhelmed by seeing a lot of stuff, even if it is pretty and orderly, but it took me some time to work that out.
Nowadays I occasionally want to declutter but don't find anything (in the areas I am allowed to declutter) any more. The kitchen would need a good declutter, but that is not my realm.

Decluttering becomes a habit in time. I'm kinda still struggling with the One In One Out rule. 😁 That's the toughest, but the best purge teacher. 🌞

Turning all the hangers around in my wardrobe and only putting them back the right way once I've worn the items of clothing on them. I've gone through one winter and one summer season, and I can now see which clothes I have not worn. Time to get real, and get rid of all those clothes on hangers turned the wrong way.
Another way to know I have too many clothes is when I start to get low on hangers. That means I have more clothes coming in than I have going out. No. I am not going to buy more hangers!

Videos like this. Feeling like I need storage containers. But also, when I judge my in-laws for holding onto something dumb I often come home and find something similar in my house that I should declutter, eg. a broken thing I will never fix, a decoration covered in dust, or a collection where I only like a few of the things now.

I am holding on to items because we are looking for new home and I might need them! What would you suggest in my situation of wanting to declutter but not knowing what I will need in my next home? I have thought I could buy items again, but then I think why would I want to spend money on something I have already and it will most likely cost more...then again I think well new house new items would be nice...only my thrifty side says "use what you have and save money"! Please give me advice if I should wait and get new when we move and I see what colors etc in new home or declutter now! Thank you for your time.

When I moved 4 years ago I only got rid of the furniture that I knew I didn't want anymore. There were a few things but just about everything came to our new location. Once we were in our "new to us" home that is when I was able to make clear decisions. Because I am also thrifty and didn't want to buy things twice. I agree that it's hard to know what you will need until you are actually in the new place.

I moved last year. I suggest focusing on items you don’t use now as far as kitchen gadgets, clothes, etc. The items like furniture or storage things remind yourself you will eventually be able to organize and declutter. If possible have a garage sale before AND after you move. This can help pay for projects or other things you don’t currently own but need in your new space. Good luck on your move.

There must be some chairs, tables, that you hate and don't want to bring to your new place. I had an old, lumpy full size mattress I got rid of before my last move. I was so happy not to bring it to my new space.
