When i saw the sludge pouring down like that , i immediately knew an old fellow never changed the oil ...lol
Back in high school my best friend's dad taught us that after you drain the old oil, you run a clean quart through to help flush gunk out. Then you put the drain plug in and refill the motor. Preventing that molasses you had, musta been what he was after with that practice.
That would help flush out the bottom of the oil pan but sludge will build up everywhere when oil isn't changed like it should be. I have seen some pretty bad buildup but this was really bad.
You need to do it about 3 more times and change your filter each time.
I'd chase that drained oil with some kerosine or gasoline to slide the rest of that crud out. There's no way that much sludge developed in 5k miles. More like 50k.
MMO is 20% turpentine
HUGE difference! Been wondering on the results of Motor Flush. DEFINTELY worth it. Have a 03' S10 w/375k and the last thing I did a few yrs ago was remove the valve covers and cleaned the snot out of the covers, rockers, rods, etc. and replaced the spider fuel assembly. Only used B12 and a good brush. Looking forward to looking under the covers and seeing after a flush what things look like. That sludge was EXTREME!!! GREAT video!
Because this was so bad I did another flush on the next oil change. Truck is doing good. I felt like it actually gain power after the flush.
Wow that was some nasty goop! Id be doing a few oil and filter changes after that. I bet that oil filter was clogged right up and bypassing all that sludge back into the engine.
I literally just flushed my 5.3 yesterday; the oil came out looking like coffee with a bunch of creamer in it (condensation from sitting open). It completely quieted the lifter that was making a bunch of noise.
Since it cleared up after the flush. I would say you had a stuck lifter and the flush freed it up. Awesome !
Can we get a update ? Did the noise come back ? Any issues after the flush ?
Wow!!! I can’t believe the end result! I’m tempted to flush my trucks now. Another great video Randy!
Holy crap - for the stuff that puked out AND what it sounds like after. That's amazing!
I really thought the engine was done the way it sounded.
You should’ve dump the second oil and put fresh oil, especially after all that gunk that came out
Thank you for the video,
i’m pretty sure my engine is clean, but this video really makes me want to see if i can quiet down my valve teain
train*
I think I will do Midnight too. It has a slight tick that won't go away. Not near as bad as this was but still annoying.
@@mossman381 my 6.0 also has a slight valve tick at idle. I'll give it a shot when the oil is due to be changed again
U might be able to ..just temporarily.
Dam bud that stuff looked like someones canned jelly or something. Great work on getting her cleaned out.
You should pull the valve covers and check the push rods to see if there plugged up and spray them out with brake clean
Would like to see the next oil change aswell.
Small coolant leaks at the intake gaskets are notorious for gunking those engines up. The seeping coolant mixes with the oil and creates goo over time. Not saying that’s the issue here but it sure is common on high mileage 4.3 engines.
This does have bad gaskets and I suppose that could be the case but I doubt it. If coolant was getting in the oil it's not something you don't notice. Oil looks bad and the oil level goes up even though you aren't adding any. This isn't what I call a high mileage truck with less than 100k miles. I don't know if my grandpa changed the oil or not but I do know my brother in law that had the truck last didn't change it.
Very low mileage to have a shit like that ...lol
Wow that was a big improvement.
How is it now any update?
Did the noise ever return?
Love it when a plan comes together. Sounded like a collapsed lifter. Probably some of that 'roof patch' blocking an oil passage. Amazing how much goo came out of that thing. I have used MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) before with good results but not as quick. That was dramatic.
That was a small amount of what all come out. It kept coming out and coming out. Like the truck was sick and throwing up. I was shocked by the sludge that came out.
@@mossman381 It was amazing that the flush could loosen that all up in such a sort time. My econobox Cavalier has a bit of a problem lifter. I tried the MMO in it and it helped but next oil change I know what I'm going to try next. Thanks Mossman.
Stick with the MMO. lt's a safer product. The Gunk works for sure and quick but can also be aggressive on seals. MMO should be run for between 300 to 500 miles before dumping the oil but that's a testament to how gentle it is but yet still gets the job done. MMO also actually conditions seals rather than attacking them.
@@JA-rn5qv Agree. The seal concern is true. I worked in a gas station in the 60's, oil then, was not very good. We would always recommend customers to come in for a bottle a week before oil change and get it. We were selling it to of course.
I had a 2000 Cavalier that had a partially collapsed lifter. MMO worked well, brought it from about 50% to 90% so it saved the car, it wouldn't have been worth fixing. Took about a month of modest driving.
Gunk Also makes a product called Valve Medic I Used on my Dads Cheyenne. It had a horrendous lifter tick that it took care of and never came back.
I am doing my engine flush as well
sorry to tell you, but he never did oil changes or used completely garbage oil. you should not have sludge under 100k..... 😑
Use the Lucas Oil 10130 Pure Synthetic Oil Stabilizer. I use it to increase oil pressure and reduce clicking
I use that in all my older trucks.
@@mossman381 Did you check the oil viscosity after adding Lucas? Looks like it's just an oil thickener.
Didn't check viscosity. I will have to check what I use. Pretty sure it's the oil stabilizer. Do they make more than one oil stabilizer?
That Mobil 1 should help also. Mobil 1 has been known to clean out engines of sludge.
Dude go buy the SuperTech from Walmart for the 2nd flush and clear the rest of the sludge, and motor medic at idol. You also don’t have to leave it all night with the 2nd purge. It get’s all of the sludge away before it has a chance to get back into the parts. If Motor Medic doesn’t work, use kerosene. And for regular oil changes on domestics, go to Costco and get the Kirklands synthetic. Good value, and has done really well on independent studies. I have a Mercedes GL450, so if I don’t use Bosch parts and Mobile 1 the damn thing will start spitting on me and yelling in German. 🤣 It literally won’t work with aftermarket stuff….
I have done a second flush and the oil is surprisingly clean and staying clean even as I put some miles on it.
Dude, I’ll bet Venom is ecstatic he finally escaped that S10 of yours.
Nice vid u should try seafoam or do a oil change with a quart or marvel mystery oil
Wow that's horrible. That drain pan needs to be pulled and cleaned. Great video 👍
Truck is running great. Checked the oil and it still pretty clean. I still can't believe how much junk come out of the oil pan.
I’d just be worried about the pick up tube.
Another thing you can do to clean more of the junk out of the oil pan is let the oil drain out. Then, with the drain plug still out, pour another quart of new oil through the engine and let that all drain out. Then put the plug back in and fill with new oil and change filter.
Only about 20% of the oil goes through the filter. In addition, 100% of the oil bypasses the filter when the engine is cold
I had the same issue with a Astro van with a 4.3 I had many years ago
It sounded like you had a plugged hydrolic lifter not able to take up the valve lash. You should do another flush. I wouldn't even consider using auto trans fluid since it's designed to allow friction. A pint of diesel fuel might be a better quick flush alternative if you don't want to buy that cleaner again.
I wouldn't replace all the oil with trans fluid. Probably just one bottle just like this flush. I wouldn't even use trans fluid now that I see how well this stuff works.
@@mossman381 It doesn't matter how much or how little you use. Transmission fluid is designed to allow SOME friction, which is going to damage the bearings and all the wear surfaces in the engine. It's ok in a pinch for power steering fluid, but NOT engine oil; or brake fluid.
@@hellcat1988 I am not disagreeing that the trans fluid wouldn't be good for the engine but that is why you only run at idle for 5 minutes. Thinning your oil with this flush isn't good either but the idea is you are doing more good by cleaning out the sludge that is limiting oil flow.
@@mossman381 You can get much better results by thinning your oil with kerosene or diesel fuel and not risk scoring your bearing surfaces and cylinder walls nearly as easy. Personally, I'd go with the diesel.
@@hellcat1988 I would have to see proof that diesel fuel is a better lubricant than trans fluid. I just don't see that.
Guessing the sludge clogged up one of the oil passage ways to the lifters, noisy lifter was probably starved of oil. Hopefully the flush cleared out all the sludge and she stays quiet.
I agree
Wow never seen lol like that
Very dramatic change Mossman ! Good video as always !
keep running that mobil 1 with short oil change intervals. it will clean right up
I used to just add 1/2 or 1 quart automatic tranny fluid with my oil change . Cleared up lifter noise . The detergent in the transmission fluid loosened the sticky lifters .
Stupid.....
@@revolutionday1 why?
Ah the purr of a Chevy engine like a wood pecker on concrete.
Have ever heard of a funnel? Just curious?
Yes, it seemed to work. I wonder if driving it with motor medic in the oil change will help more?
If you do anything but idle with the flush in your oil you will destroy your engine.
Does it clean sludge around timing chain as well?
I have done this twice now and the oil seems pretty clean. I haven't opened up the engine but the amount of sludge that came out it has to be a good thing. Make sure you get the synthetic stuff.
Change the oil a few more times every 700 miles. That motor is a beast smh
Broken flywheel?
You didnt get any lines clogged up? I want to do it, heck I have that bottle. But I'm just afraid of it clogging up my lines
It seems to be running great. Do you have the synthetic flush? There is a cheaper version of the Gunk flush that I have tried before and it didn't seem to work this good. A bottle of this stuff is like $20.
@@mossman381 I'll go ahead and buy this one. I'm looking at my bottle, it's not synthetic. I bought this bottle at Walmart. That's not good right?
Buying stuff from Walmart doesn't mean it's bad stuff. The synthetic seems to be harder to find. Everybody carries the cheaper flush.
@@mossman381 okay, so its best to use the synthetic flush?
@ They have a cheaper bottle that doesn't work as well.
Drastic difference, hope it doesn't come back! Sludge is never good!
Really happy with the results. Haven't seen much from you. Everything going ok?
@@mossman381 Yeah, I've got to edit some videos and get them up. It's been too hot to do much lately in the house..
Marvel mystery oil would have been better
Nice! I’m gunna try this on the 6.0 tick.
Did you try it ?
The lifters are ticking
People love to use shot oil and the cheapest gas they can find.... LoL my SRT4 & R1 get ONLY shell 93 and the best synthetics. Great video!
I'm impressed!!! I think I'm going to pick me up a quart of that good stuff. My engine has never had a knock but just the idea of getting all that sludge and slime out would definitely make it easier on the oil pump. I just got done cruising the beach if mine had a knock like that I think I would start crying LOL
When it started sounding really bad and taking a long time to stop I had a sick feeling. Thought the truck was done for sure. I am going to flush the rest of my trucks because this worked so well. The truck feels like it runs better and has more power now that I have been driving it.
@@mossman381 can you do a video on doing to your diesel truck and see if you get any changes.
She's got a very similar knock now I want to cry 😭 this is 2.5 months later going to the store today!!! Is yours still running good?
Judging by your end result I’d say that noise will come back looks like probably have to tear into the heads and see what’s up
The slight ticking might come back at idle, but by looking to how his truck sounded before ..it is definitely a big improvement...and taking off the heads is not necessary.
Good tackle o
That's almost what my Mercedes look like after running Royal purple
Time to use BG flush kit on that.
Or the junk yard.
my 2000 chevy 2500 with the 5.7 has 200k miles. drove home yesterday with nothing abnormal. started it today and it has a loud lifter tap. About like the one in this video or a little louder. Mine is not going away as engine warms up though. Going to try the engine flush based on this and some other videos. I changed the oil today before researching any of this.....so im starting with a clean oil and a clean filter. Also considering the seafoam engine treatment or going with a quart of ATF fluid. what are your thoughts?
I would not use the ATF. I have done the seafoam and it doesn't really seem to do much for the oil. The engine flush worked so good. You need to get the synthetic stuff though.
I love that weather in the beginning of the video !!
is it okay if i use non synthetic ?.
I think the synthetic works better.
Dang mine is making the same sound
Isn’t that bottle of flush just kerosene?
Kind of ..
That was a good sip of beer right after cranking the engine
Cheers my friend!!!!
I don't drink. That was Pepsi.
Interesting! What is the "Service Engine Soon" light on for?
It's been on since my grandpa had the truck. He said he took it in and they said it was the evap system so he never fixed it. It's an emission thing that catches fuel vapor from the fuel tank. I probably should look at what codes it has.
@@mossman381 Might improve your fuel mileage if you fix that.
Omg
Should have flushed a quart or so (in your extreme case) of clean engine oil through with the plug left out, while draining the old oil/motor flush mixture.
**EDIT** I see that a few others have commented on this already....
I poured a little extra clean oil in while the drain plug was out to flush more junk out.
@@mossman381 My man. 👍
