Fantastic tutorial! Just what I needed. Very slow and patient explanation, no extraneous distraction such as music, silly jokes, excessive chatter. Thank you.

Hi. My SP53H decided that it's drive had had enough and that aspect pact up on me! Your little video on the clutch belt was perfect and saved me so much time in getting the thing stripped down. Just waiting for a new belt to arrive tomorrow and then I will have no excuse to do battle with the lawns!!! Many thanks, excellent video! 😉👍

Excellent guide. Thanks very much for this. I’d been dreading (and putting off) tackling the drive belt on our machine but after watching your video I was done in under an hour. Really enjoyed seeing inside the gearbox too. Early Fordson tractors used worm drive like that. Hope you’re well and enjoying the summer.

Very useful video, I’m grateful about the point made regarding the woodruff key as my boss had broken in half and the key had already been lost. If I hadn’t watched your video I wouldn’t have known that I needed to order one along with the replacement boss. Thanks 👍🏻

Well my mower hit a small brick at the edge of the garden and the motor wheels stopped albeit it the rest ok. I was stumped found what looked like the gearbox but it was more simple. This video was perfect showed me how to fix it and yes the belt came off, it was packed in the gears as you mention but 60 mins to fix with a 10mm spanner and socket. Perfect. Many many thanks your a star so helpful and clear.

Turning the machine on its side may allow petrol to get into the cylinder and water down the oil. The machine is fitted with a petrol on off tap in the fuel line so turn it off and run the machine until it empties the carburettor. It would always be a good idea to change the oil at the same time. Do not turn the petrol back on until you are finished.

Absolutely brilliant video Charly. Clear and uncomplicated. The drive has been restored. I do wonder how/why the belt would come off in the first place? Many thanks Charly.
The one issue I thought I was going to have when I first looked was that the the two screw heads appeared to be rusted and the star screw driver wasn't catching. It turned out they were very dirty and not four point stars, they were six.

The gearbox is not operated by belt tension their is a simple clutch mechinism inside the gearbox that engages the drive. The clutch is two metal cups rim to rim with deep notches that clap together when the cable lever is operated.

Thanks for providing this video it has helped me to understand the drive mechanism better. The manual I have for this machine has very limited technical information e.g. the 6mm setting on the adjuster. I wondered where you were able to obtain this information, or was it just experience over many years?

If the clutch is adjusted correctly then it's probably the gearbox which has to be replaced. They aren't cheap. If the machine is getting on it may be time to invest in a replacement.
