Good video. I'm a flying instructor in Australia. My proudest moments are when students (and pilots) do a go around. Never apologise ... in fact I always brief passengers to expect a GA potential as we are downwind. Power is our best friends so well done
+Biggles Alganon thank you for the comment. I haven't gone around for a while. It's funny how those decisions happen in a split second.
Agree that Biggles. Good decision-making. Also chance to practice your go-around technique - power on and get that extra full flap tucked away quickly. Never apologise Jon, it can be a life saver...
Fabulous videos. Takes me straight back to my me flying days at Biggin. Thank you !
+JP Cavanna pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Great video - I used live in the South east a few years ago - nice to all those places I remember before moving out to Australia.
Thanks for watching.
Another great video - and I know your passenger! Final practice cross-country (which is to Biggin so listening to the RT is very helpful!) then two cross-country solos and I'm sending off the paperwork! Thanks again. Looking forward to the next one.
+Dave Colgate thanks Dave. Good luck.
Another nicely done video Jon. For a while I thought you weren't going to talk to us!
+Paul Matley thanks Paul. I said hello in the end!
Like all of your videos! Very informative!
I am coming all the way from Hong Kong and will start my PPL training this summer in Biggin Hill!!
Hopefully will see G-OR around!
+Kin Lok Chan thanks. Good luck with the training.
Good call on the go around - good decision making... and certainly looked like challenging landing conditions.
Lovely scenery, and the quality from that GoPro 5 looked like a real improvement on the other cameras.
+Nick T it's a great camera. Thanks Nick.
Another superb video!
+CharlieClass156 thank you.
Love the videos, keep em coming. I would personally probably phrase it something like.. it was a bit more choppy than I would have liked so opted to initiate a go around :).
+Peter Green thanks Peter
Great video! I'm flying at Biggin today, all looking promising!
+CharlieDelta a nice day for flying.
Turned out to be great.
Great video John, I noticed the second time you had switched off SkyDemon. Those alerts are really constant and mostly during critical phases of flight. Good decision, I'd like to see SkyDemon address that audio alerting.
+Ben Skelly I now know how to control the volume of the alert during flight, so I can turn it down if it's annoying. Great in flight though.
I’m an air cadet from Newhaven, think I’ve met the CI :)
Great video Jon. Did you put in any post production work on your exterior shots as the colour is amazing! Enjoyed you backseat filming with Ben as well. (How did you get on with the long trip north Bertie? I am looking forward to watching this)
Hi Tim. Thanks. I do try and balance the shots up with some colour correcting. The different go pro models sometimes come out looking a bit different. The trip with Bertie was quite an adventure. He did well, apart from being sick on the last leg back! I have a video on banner towing coming out soon. J
You are doing a good job, the colour correcting is working well. I have had problems filming from the back of the RV4 but the trips have been good. Banner towing video sounds interesting and I look forward to watching it.
Cheers for another nice video :)
+CKUKMale pleasure.
One of the best seas in Britain and David Clark headsets are top quality and robust
+Michael Miklos thanks Michael.
I love your videos, have you ever flown down to my local airfield Goodwood (eghr) ??
+Lilly Sims hi Lilly. Thanks. I've visited Goodwood a few times. I have friends nearby.
Great video. How do you record the audio? I use a cable that goes straight into my GoPro, but it records so much engine noise. Yours is so clear.
+ClearProp - Richard Nash hi Richard. Thanks. Check out the FAQs on my website, it covers this. www.jonhunt.net/faq/
The Flying Reporter sorry for the question, you must get it all the time. Ha ha
Hoping ill see my house in one of these vlogs soon!
+Ben Holland ha. I get around.
Great weather for that one John. Quick q...do you use an external GPS receiver for your sky demon or just use the devices own GPS?
+Andy Donaldson I used to use the internal gps on my iPad, which worked fine. I now connect the iPad to pilot aware in the aircraft which gives position and traffic. I've found both pretty reliable.
Ok thanks. Some tough landing conditions there btw. Nice work ;)
Great flight, shame about Gatwick. Good decision on the go around! It may have just been the conditions but I thought you may have been slightly overcompensating with ailerons on final if you watch the video. The rudder is your friend on final, just crab into the wind with ailerons, you dont need to immediately react to every gust with large aileron input, just deal with the general trend.
Thanks Dave. You're probably right about the excessive aileron control.
Hi Jon can you explain what you said at the start you said 'request taxi for flight PPR 227', what does PPR 227 mean? is it your booking out reference number? also on your return to Biggin did you join crosswind from dead side then position downwind? sorry for the questions currently doing my PPL and trying to learn as much as I can, your videos are a great help! I've been recommending them to other students, keep it up!
PPR 227 will be the number ATC will have given me when booking PPR. We don't really have to read that back, but I did when they introduced the system. Re the join. Without re-watching the vid, can't recall, but it sounds about right. That's pretty much the standard (published) join for Biggin Hill...with the exception that these days they want you to cross the airport midfield, then turn downwind.
Thanks for clearing those up Jon a great help!
Great Video as always, what is the app you have on the iPad and does it need any external connections in the aircraft? I do not have my own plane so looking for something that is easily set up in each that I use?
+kevin Darby thanks. I use SkyDemon and it can use an in-built gps in iPad or other tablet.
Cheers, will look that up and keep the videos coming. I am currently doing my flying out of Shoreham, navigation exercises between Lydd and Lee on Solent, so may pass you in the air sometime : - )
Hi Jon,
Just watched BBC election programme , you were in Hastings
+Ishaq Mullazada I was!
What was that racket on final?! That must add another distraction into the mix!
+Thomas Maskell I had turned up the alerts on SkyDemon. Traffic warning. I have found a way to mute it in flight now.
Hi! Where did you buy your iPad bracketed? I've been looking for a good one for a while now.
+Simon Tudor hi. check out the FAQ link in the video description.
Am I going crazy or where you on TV on election night? lmao
The day job!
