Flying a helicopter over central London | Heli lanes & Heathrow crossing | Full ATC

- Join me as I fly a helicopter along the London Helicopter Routes - often called 'the heli lanes'. These precise ariel corridors allow pilots to operate within the busy London control zone. This is a flight I've been looking forward to taking ever since I began training for a commercial helicopter pilot licence in October 2019. I hope you enjoy the views of the capital and Heathrow airport, and find this useful if you're planning to fly the route yourself. Don't forget that my videos should never be used as an alternative to proper flight instruction by a qualified FI. Thanks for watching!

This was so good I had to watch it again but on my TV, rather than i-pad👏
Awesome Andy! I'm delighted you enjoyed it. :)
That rotating 360-degree camera is absolutely phenomenal in the views that it gives. It is so easy on the eyes with those slow cinematic panning motions that it does with such silky smoothness. Fantastic weather to fly over the London skyline, and hats off to the aviator for navigating that crowded airspace like the pro he has become.
Thanks very much! It is a great camera. It’s a bit of a faff to edit the footage but the results are worth it.
Great flight captain and your RT was excellent 👍🚁. Liking the camera shots too.
Thanks very much Barrie. :)
Two masked Men in London , just a different stagecoach ! Fantastic Rory a really interesting and scenic Video. Keep them coming !
Thanks very much John. I’m glad you enjoyed this one despite the face gear!
Rory what a brilliant experience for you buddy. Probably everybody's dream to tour London by helicopter brilliant views. Your camera was brilliant just a few shadows with the sun.you have to watch around London because you have four or five airports in and around London and down south all aircraft coming your way. Thanks for the views buddy phil. Happy flying rory keep safe philip.
Excellent Video Rory thank you very much -really nice the highlighting of landmarks with a pen.
Great - I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Nice of Jamie Theakston to narrate your video for you. It was like watching a slow episode of Traffic Cops. Very interesting. And unlike other videos with a 360degree camera, not sickly or disorientating to watch!
;)
Thanks Joe, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah I get Jamie to cover for me when I’m too busy. 🤣👍
Another great video Rory! Great to see you progressing with your training, even through these testing times.
Thanks Michael - I'm very lucky that things are still going ahead.
Wow. What a great video Rory thanks so much. I’ll be watching that again. And again!
Excellent stuff!
One of your best Rory, great views and your enthusiasm shines through.
Thank you!
Awesome video Rory - just saw the 90% exam results - congratulations- job well done Sir!
Thanks very much indeed!
Wow. That was a real workout on the comms and nav. Stunning scenery. Thanks.
Nice one Steve - I’m glad you enjoyed it. 👍👍
Maybe I will get to do this one day. Not for the faint hearted and I won't attempt it solo! Well done.
Cheers John. Good luck!
What an amazing flight, over the city and then overhead Heathrow! Seems unreal that you can take a small helicopter
in the UK over such places. Thanks so much for sharing the experience.
Thanks very much Stuart. It was an amazing experience and I agree it seems strange that we’re allowed to do such flights, but it’s great. Thanks for watching. 👍
That was seriously awesome Rory, so cool what you can do in a heli!
Thanks Joe. It was a great flight and I can’t wait to do it again.
Fantastic video, one heck of a workload!
Cheers Paul - it was certainly busy for me!
Awesome Rory - definitely on my bucket list too!
Fantastic experience - definitely worth doing. 👍
Rory, that’s a great video. The 360 is a great addition. I’ve flown those routes 3 times now and it still really useful to watch someone else fly them. And funny, how we all say the same stuff!
Great stuff - I’m glad you enjoyed it!
That was great Rory,... I had the biggest smile for you all the way through. What a trip. Well done. The views form the 360 were great too!
Cheers Barry - it was a fantastic trip. I'm very lucky to be able to do this and I'm glad to be able to share it.
Amazing...........Brilliant.................
Fantastic birds eye view footage.Enjoyed very much.
Lovely stuff! Thanks for watching.
Brilliant video Rory. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for watching!
Brilliant and interesting video Rory!
Thanks very much - I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Loved watching this Rory - awesome flight !
Cheers Steve - I’m glad you enjoyed it!
From Rory on the ground, That was great!
Ha ha ha - very good! Thanks Rory.
London looking great from the sky Rory - really enjoying the 360 cam stuff.
Thanks very much James!
What a great flight!! You got to love the use of that 360° camera!
Thanks for taking us along on a beautiful and demanding flight.
Thanks David, I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
Awesome
Well done. Enjoyed that very much.
Thank you!
Fabulous video and what a great experience Rory well done :-)
Thanks Jeff. It was fantastic fun.
The best yet,
Cheers!
Great vid as always. I’ve worked in London for 20+ years and it’s great to see it from the air. Must admit was nervous watching you at times, sooo much to think about. Well done and enjoying your journey as always !
Thanks very much Steven. If you were nervous imagine how I felt! It was great though - I can’t wait to do it again.
Great stuff Rory, fabulous photography. Good to see you following your dream :)
Thanks very much Gary. I hope you're doing well.
Great video Rory & well done.
Reminds me of a London Heli-lanes training trip I did as a passenger in a RAF SAR Sea King of C Flt 202 Sqn from Manston in the late 1980s. Practice that proved useful for them when they were later called out on a night job in response to the Marchioness disaster on the Thames.
Oh I remember watching a documentary about that tragedy, such a shame. I would love to have a go in a sea king though! Thanks for watching.
Great video! You really need to be on the ball when flying the lanes, I flew them once back in 2007 and the London skyline has changed a lot! My sister is a paramedic on the London Air Ambulance and is lucky enough to see this view frequently. Thanks for sharing your experience and good luck with the rest of your training.
Thanks very much Jim. Your sister is doing almighty work. I hope she’s able to enjoy the views between jobs. 👍
Wow! That was awesome! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you for watching!
This is fantastic. Rory! All your flying is great - but this is next level buddy - those views!
Thanks so much mate, that’s very kind of you. I love the 360 camera views, just a shame it’s so processor hungry on the computer!
Fantastic, really enjoyed that. I was on the edge of my seat - you did a great job with such a high workload. 360 camera views were stunning. thanks.
Thanks a lot Duncan. I'm glad you enjoyed the views.
wonderfull sight seeing from above. greetings from amsterdam
Thank you! Hello from the UK. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Really awesome, Rory. I worked in behavioural psychology and was fortunate to be asked to do some (informal) CRM on 10 shifts, including at night, with a certain UK Police Air Support Unit many years ago. I'd feedback any anomalies/inconsistencies/etc to the chief pilot. This footage brought back lots of exciting memories. I also remember you being interviewed of 5Live on your last day of work talking about your exciting plans, it's great to see what you've accomplished.
Ah thanks Iain. That’s great. I remember that interview with Adrian on my last day. I bet you have lots of awful CRM knowledge I could learn from you sometime. Thanks for watching.
Mike Herriott That video was first class Rory well done keep it up.super to watch over london and heathrow on my computer.
regards Mike
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed watching.
Great video, not every day you get to see Heathrow up close, reminded me of flying into London city in the dornier 328
Glad you enjoyed it Reggie.
Great video Rory. Well done for keeping your concentration with so many distractions.
Thanks very much Nigel. It was certainly a busy sortie.
LOVED THIS VIDEO I DRIVE AROUND LONDON EVERY DAY AND GREAT TO SEE FROM ABOVE sorry about caps left on
Ha ha - thanks very much. I thought you might be Trump for a minute with the caps lock on. I WON UA-cam, BY A LOT! 😂
fantastic pictures well done.
Thanks Stephen. 👍
What a fabulous flight. Great camera views, works really well. Keep up the great work.
Thanks very much Neil, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Wow thats amazing living the dream
I’m very fortunate. Thanks for watching. 👍
Not gonna lie, I was nervous sitting here watching this whole video from the comfort of my gaming chair....... just trying to repeat back in my head all the instructions of the controller services was a pain, this must really beef up your short term memory recall with all the practice you get in. I hope some day I'm in a position to follow in your footsteps.
Well thanks for watching and best of luck with the rest of your flying journey. It was a busy flight but it’s not so bad when you get a bit of practice in. Cheers
This is epic. I did some of this route in the front left seat of a Twin Squirrel from Elstree a long time ago, courtesy of the wonderful Colin Heathcote of Cabair. We obviously didn't do the Heathrow bit (which looked fantastic BTW), but did have a fantastic trip out to London City and back. Happy days.
I loved the 360 degree camera! Well done you.
Thanks very much Lawrence. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some good flying memories of your own. Cheers!
I love it! The music and your voice sounds like an episode of traffic cops 😂😂 Keep it up!
Ha ha - brilliant, thank you. 😁
Hi Rory. I don't normally start a comment with OMG!, but OMG! What an absolutely excellent video - from beginning to end.
Quite a number of things about this video appeal to me:
1) Growing up in the 60's, and living about 4 miles from Northolt, and watching the RAF doing rotor free landings in Westland S55's,
2) Having my first flight in a DH Rapide at Denham aged about 9yrs old,
3) Having my first fixed wing flying lesson at Denham in 1978, and getting about 6hrs on my log book,
4) Going to the cafe at Elstree for a coffee and a look around,
5) Getting my FAA PPL at Long Beach California with pretty heavy traffic that near to LAX
6) Working as a security officer at Heathrow T5 and watching aircraft movements at every lunch break
7) Knowing and loving London so all of those aerial views are easily identifiable
All the camera views were as excellent as your proficiency and camaraderie with your colleague. What an absolute pleasure it is to know that people as competent as you guys are using the airspace so safely whilst having your own amazing time!
Sorry to have go on a bit, but I just had to comment.
I suspect you will make an excellent heli pilot.
Regards Mark in the UK
Thank you so much Mark. I'm absolutely delighted you enjoyed it so much. It sounds like you've loved aviation for a long time - it's so much fun isn't it! I hope you'll consider subscribing and checking out some of my other videos. Cheers, Rory
@@RoryOnAir Oh I subscribed when I first came across your channel. I have also watched nearly all your back catalogue. Excellent video content and quality.
They are a credit to you.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
@@thecorbies lovely stuff! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the other videos. Nice to have you onboard. 👍
Outrageously good
Thanks very much John!
Wow, that was a great trip Rory. I should imagine your head was buzzing as there was so much to do but equally what an exciting sortie. I should imagine it was breath taking. Watched it on dads smart TV and the detail is amazing. Well flown and very well edited. Thanks for posting and pleased for you that the professional flying training can continue through this lockdown. 😎👏👌🚁
Thanks Tim. I’m really glad you enjoyed it on the TV. It was a pretty intense trip but that’s partly because I worried about it before we set off. In the end it wasn’t as busy or as a tricky as I had feared so I’d love to do it again and be able to take more of it in. I’m very lucky that training is able to continue during lockdown - I’m sure you and many others must be frustrated. Hopefully this vaccine will come soon. Good old science!
Incredible video. I am on my way to finishing my PPL (H) in an Robinson 22. I very much look forward to doing that soon.
Thanks very much! Good luck with getting your PPL H completed. 🤞
Excellent video... you also sound like Jamie Theakston. 😄👌
Ha ha - love it. I always enjoyed his TV police programmes so thanks!
What a fantastic video 👏
Thanks very much Andy!
My son in law flew the heli lanes as a passenger, down the river from Elstree in same type helicopter with a friend doing hour building. He was totally high on the experience and could not stop talking about it. They did not do the Heathrow element maybe next time! A few days later he did his solo in Cessna 172.
Loved the new camera. See you were happy to ask James to move the map well done Rory!
Excellent - I’m not surprised he enjoyed it - it’s pretty cool. Yes, poor James was being helpful but I was desperate not to but the altitude!
Great video.
Thanks!
Great video again Rory. Some mad camera angles! Well done!
Many thanks!
Fascinating to watch. I found this because I live on a boat on the Thames and see Chinooks flying up and down so was interested what it was all about. It's interesting to see the differences in flying down the Thames to piloting a boat. Really interesting, thanks!
Thanks very much for your comment Elizabeth. I’m delighted you enjoyed it. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of living on a boat funnily enough. Rory
Rory, from a current LL ATCO; great crossing, especially on easterlies! I'll pass on this vid to the controller on duty, he'll love it.
Best regards and all the best with the rest of your training.
Thank you very much! I’d love it if the ATCO gets to see this as they were very helpful letting us through. I hope I get to fly the lanes again soon. Cheers, Rory.
That sounded like my chum Tim flying the Whisper callsign, flew down here in a flight of 5 R22's with him in one of them back when Pontious was a pilot, great video thanks for the reminder.
That sounds like fun! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. 👍🚁
Those 360 cam views are awesome.
Great! Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Whoa, what a fantastic experience that must have been. Just watching it was very enjoyable, flying it must have been amazing. Don't really understand cameras and stuff, but whatever, some stunning footage on that. Well done Rory,
Thanks very much Ian - I’m pleased you enjoyed it!
Great video--and audio---love the 360!!
Thanks very much. 👍
Superb! (Love the 360 degree camera).
Thanks very much. :)
Excellent: you followed my commute from Albert Bridge to Canary Wharf, although it takes the river bus 40 minutes, not 3. I got to see my flat and my office!
I'm now sorely tempted to convert from fixed wing! I am based at Fairoaks, so chatting with Heathrow radar is a common task when travelling north, but the transit is much further west, via Ascot/Burnham. You still need to be snappy on the radio and accurate with the route: they let you know if you're not! I deliberately used that route as an immersive self-training exercise once I'd passed my PPL.
I was quite surprised how high you were, especially towards Canary Wharf, considering it's on the easterly approach to EGLC.
Hi, thanks for your comment. I'm glad you got to see so much of your familiar London areas. I love flying the heli - having come from a fixed wing background it was quite a jump but fantastic fun. Cheers, Rory.
Spectacular!
360 cam gives an interesting perspective- takes some getting used to as you can’t tell what your heading is relative to the view, but awesome views and fabulous to experience vicariously while grounded!
Thanks Richard. I see where you’re coming from (which is ironic given what you said) but I love the flexibility it gives in the edit. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Good job
Brilliant video Rory, always enjoyable even in a whirlybird! Brilliant content keep up the great work :-) from sunny Manchester :-).
Thank you. We couldn’t have done that route in a plane… 😉🚁🤘
Fabulous that flight Rory. I don’t normally do envy but that flight made me really envious. Fantastic to see you living your dream!
Thanks very much for your comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I hope you get to take a trip like that yourself one day. 👍
@@RoryOnAir I’ll get this chemo out the way hopefully & with a bit of luck you pass your test & I’ll hire you for a trip somewhere 👍😄
@@popmacca Sounds good to me. I'm sorry you're going through that. I'm sending good vibes and best wishes.
Brilliant job Rory. Those pans from the 360 cam, in the location you put it, from inside to out work so well.
Thanks very much Simon. I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
Excellent video Rory, I had the pleasure of doing one of the London helicopter routes and landing at the Battersea Heliport in a Jet Ranger. Great experience. Your flight went really well. Congratulations!
Oh wow - that would have been awesome! I hope I get to land at Battersea one day too. Thanks for watching.
Loving the 360 camera , great flight 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers Steve. 👍
11:51 Rainbow 2R callsign is the royal flight/helicopter.
That was great..I’ve got a helicopter ride in Tenerife soon - but London looks great from the air!
That sounds like good fun - enjoy it!
Hi Rory, very good video, you really did make it look easy you must be destined for this helicopter pilot stuff!! Great camera work and love the 360 camera must get one of those!!
Thanks very much, you're very kind.
Stunning! I would love to do that.
It was great fun. 👍
New subscriber here. That was pretty intense. Never knew about the Heli lanes.
Thanks for sharing.
Welcome aboard Steven! Yes, it was a busy flight but great fun. I hope to do it again at night sometime.
Wow what a flight, epic! And the 360 footage looks amazing. Great job ;)
Thanks very much Andy. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍👍
@@RoryOnAir Very much! Something you'll never experience on a fixed-wing licence lol
@@andyday60 yes, that’s one of the reasons I wanted to do it. You gotta take the wins!
@@RoryOnAir Too right!
The insta360 is a great camera with so many uses. Ive used mine for a lot of different uses, but this is a great use case. I recommended the camera to a friend doing his PPL recently who was given permission to mount an action cam.
Cheers David. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Wow so exciting..... Shame I did not see my old studio LWT Southbank... Really enjoyed that so much thank you
Really glad you enjoyed it Al, thank you!
Very good pilot performance, good movie, the 360 camera is great and thanks for the ride, you almost have your CPL(H) in the bag. :) Cheers, Eric.
Thanks Eric - I’m working hard in the hope of getting it done before the end of the year.
Impressive
Cheers!
Superb 👏👏👏👏 - you’ve come such a long way in such a short period with COVID-19 against you. You should be very proud of yourself mate. I know I am. Bravo buddy x
Ah thank you mate. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been able to continue despite the turmoil. 😁
Main attraction both the pilots are gorgeous.
Ha ha - I’ll take that as a complement. 👍
Superb video Rory - and great flying! Just like you I grew up looking at the helicopters flying down the Thames and it was great to do it myself after my PPL(H). Never did the LHR crossing though - very envious. One tiny point - you've tagged Barnes but it's actually Fulham FC there. Save flying.
Thanks Declan. I think that stadium is called Barnes from an aviation perspective, like the Middlebrook stadium up near Bolton. Crossing Heathrow was mega!
Just came across your channel, great content and you have a great voice. Very news reporter like
Thanks very much Ant. I hope you’ll consider subscribing. 👍
@@RoryOnAir oh yes have certainly subbed
Great video , thanks for having us along for the ride , the 360 camera I found a bit bamboozling 😀👍
Thanks Andrew. It is a bit strange that you can see about 200 degrees of view with it in one shot, but I quite like it. 👍
Great video. Looked like a beaut day for flying.
Yes, it was an excellent day for it actually. 👍
@@RoryOnAir I was lucky enough to take a flight out of Battersea Heliport once. A VERY cool experience 😀
@@TheFullyChargedGardener yeah, I’d love to do that - sounds ace.
@@RoryOnAir I was only a passenger - not lucky enough to actually pilot like you do. 😀
@@TheFullyChargedGardener still a very cool experience though and you do see more as a passenger because you can concentrate on the views.
love it i can see my house h9 next to heathrow
EPIC
Thanks!
Well done Rory. I am now 11 hours in to my PPL at Helicentre, so these vids are very useful!! Great team at Helicentre and the Cabri is a superb little helicopter.
Excellent stuff! Well do say hello next time you see me at the base. It’s a great school who have helped me get through the exams and I’m really enjoying the flying obviously as well. Good luck with your PPL.
@@RoryOnAir I am ex Radio Odstock (hospital radio) in Salisbury!
@@peenergysolutionslimited8903 what is it with radio and flying eh!?
@@RoryOnAir I know, perhaps we just like using that pilot voice on the radio! Some ATC towers are more like doctors, they mumble so you haven't a clue what they said.
@@peenergysolutionslimited8903 ha ha - yeah, I think it’s a combination of that and all the buttons to press!
Rory, as a student pilot your RT is excellent, well done! Please don’t worry about thanking controllers, particularly on busy frequencies such as LHR tower, it’s not required and just congests the airwaves. Great 360 video too 👍
Thanks very much Colin. I’m very conscious that others may copy what I say / do so I want to be as accurate as possible with flying and RT. I do my best but it’s usually the first thing to go during periods of high workload.
Under stress the first sense to go is touch, then hearing. Don’t worry about it too much, you’ve clearly got a solid foundation to fall back on when the workload gets high. Always remember, A-N-C! Great videos too, have been thinking about trying out the dark side (helicopters!), so your vids are very interesting, keep it up!
@@cheesycol1 lovely stuff Colin, thanks. I’d highly recommend giving helicopters a go. I’m many ways it’s really quite different to fixed wing and it’s certainly a whole lotta fun!
Great video and stunning shots. Just one little peeve though. At 20:20, just a few seconds before you fly over Sunbury Cross and right over my house, the 360° camera starts to pan right and although I probably saw you fly over, I missed what would have been a nice aerial view! Oh well, maybe another day!
Sorry about that Ray but I’m glad you enjoyed the flight. Thanks for watching. 👍
@@RoryOnAir I know the windows are made of a high grade Perspex type material but the optical quality through it is just superb.
Thanks Rory, really interesting - the 360 degree camera was good and gave a fine perspective. I think it would've been hard work to do the flight solo and without your Instructor, as you say there is so much to take in around London - I would like to have seen Parliament spotted. Mike from Ince.
Thanks Mike, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a busy flight but I think I could probably manage ok by myself now that I've done it. I'll probably go with a pilot buddy next time though as a compromise. I hope you're not too waterlogged at Ince. Rory
Loving the insta360 one X footage, every camera bag should have one, well done on upping the production level!
Thanks very much. It almost killed my 2013 iMac trying to edit / render it. 🤦🏼♂️😳
@@RoryOnAir I edit mine on my Iphone in the app, it would literally kill my same era PC :) forgot to say, amazing views of London, thinking of all the Covid stuff you guys are having to go through, stay safe
@@ChrisMeuzelaar1 yeah, it was all one 60GB file so I couldn’t do it on a device. It’s just a hassle whatever way you work it. Covid is a massive pain for everyone but I’m very lucky that with the measures put in place by Helicentre Aviation we’ve managed to carry on.
Great flight ! The new camera produces great video. A bit different from flying along the Mersey!
Thanks Andy. Always good to try something new. 👍
Awesome video Rory & good to see you in my neck of the woods. I’ve seen a couple of Colibris fly over my house so if you saw a mad man waving before you got to Gutteridge then that was me ;-)
I thought the 360 footage a bit gimmicky to start off with but it grew on me.
Nice one Jed. I was too busy trying to be accurate to look for people waving. I’ll have more capacity next time!
@@RoryOnAir it did look intense but glad you enjoyed it.
Brilliant Rory, that was a lot of concentration and you breezed it. Awesome views of the city and then to cap it all transiting Heathrow, did you have to pinch yourself? Amazing well done.
Yes, I did have to pinch myself as it was very cool. It certainly kept me on my toes though! Thanks for watching.
