  • This video is based on my experience with upgrading my 2.0 TDi I will provide an introduction and explanation of the typical mods people do on their 2.0 TDi, explain what they actually do for your performance and help you to build an upgrade strategy for your own 2.0 TDi project.
    Please let me know which car and which engine version or year you have and it will help me prioritize the production list I have.
    I also love to hear your experiences and tips, and fully understand that not everyone will agree with my cautious approach, if you would like to see more in depth explanations and complex discussions let me know, I can cover fuel injection phases and turbo spool profiles for example but decided to keep this video accessible to even newbies to the world of tuning and upgrades.
    My A3 came with the PD engine a BKD to be precise and I found many mods didn't really do much or work as expected. I later updated the article as the engine was revised and VW group went over to A CR fuel system, so have also based this video on the EA188 & EA189 engines and much of this still applies to the later GEN3 & EVO engines, but because there were so many revisions and updates I will focus on the Gen 3 & the EA288 range in a future video as these require a slightly different approach due to the way they were designed and operate.
    The 2.0 TDi came in many power levels and had 3 major revisions and this video will focus on the early PD and later CR revisions of this great diesel engine (Gen 1 & Gen 2 primarily).
    The power levels varied from 105hp to 225hp but most were based on either the 170hp or 140hp version. Revisions were EA188 EA189 & EA288 and each generation improved on the previous ironing out the problems and issues which are detailed in the video • Common VW Audi Seat Sk...
    I will focus on engine upgrades such as intakes, cold air feeds, camshafts, turbos and fuel system mods. Exhaust mods and DPF removal are also discussed in this video along with the possible drawbacks of these mods & upgrades on your 2.0 TDi engine.
    This will contain tips for 2.0 Tdi Stage 1 mods and also 2.0 TDi stage 2 mods and upgrades, most of our viewers will be taking their 2.0 Tdi to stage 1 which is a simple upgrade path, stage 2 takes more money and investment but does offer larger power gains.
    Tunes or remaps are the most effective mod for this engine releasing much more power and usually improving fuel economy (depending on your driving style of course.)
    We will look at tuning these engines, the best upgrades and mods for them, including 2.0 TDi remapping, 2.0 TDi tunes, Camshafts, Intake mods and exhaust mods and turbo upgrades for the EA188 EA189 & The later EA288 engines will be covered in a future video, although the principles of tuning the earlier versions still applies to the more recent EA288 engines.
    In this video we break down each mod and help you fully understand what to expect from it, and how the mod will help your performance (or hinder it).
    I will also talk through some typical misconceptions and provide my usual unbiased advice for tuning, modifying and upgrading the VW Audi Group 2.0 TDI engines.

      @@torquecars appreciate that🙂 I was wondering what the optimal setup would be on those 120hp engines to squeeze 200-220 hp? From what I learned in the video - bigger turbo, maybe aftermarket intercooler, remapping ofcourse and was it injectors you mentioned? Spesifics on what turbo and injectors please🙂 thank you

    Awesome overview, great to hear from someone who knows what they are talking about! Your website is exceptional as well, I've been heavily involved in tuning and modding the VAG diesels since 2008, I still learnt a thing or two from reading pages on your site for a bit more info, so kudos.
    The sweet spot on my 140 hp EA189 ( BV40 stock turbo ) is the GTC1549vz from the 130kw Audi's etc, so you are spot on about pinching parts from the same era better performing models. Incredible results and street drivability ( tweaked DSG sure helps though ).

    I have Audi a3 8pa (sportback) 140hp bmm cr engine with 8 valves, full s-line model with exterior & interior & suspension s-line (really makes a difference between that and stock equiped a3).
    And since i was driving an 130hp 4x4 suv before which is really slugish, when i bought a3 it was really good and springy, buth when i got used to the power and responsivnes of the engine it was okay.
    And few months ago i got it a custom remap, makes nearly 180hp, and i sat in the car and drove it and it wasn't all that better ( because i'm mostly driving it easy on the gas pedal and in 1500-2000 rpm range), and then i drove it sharper for the next few kilometers and you can really feel that power diference, engine is much sharper and more responsive on the pedal and just pulls harder.
    Now i'm considering going a step further to get about 210-225hp so i have three questions:
    1- Do i swap a turbo from a3 170hp variant and do a custom remap or do a hybrid turbo of 140hp version, which would be better?
    2- Would i need to upgrade injectors from 170hp variant or the ones i have would be enough?
    3- Do i need to upgrade intercooler too or not? ( i dont think so because i drive the car normaly and softer on gas pedal about 80-90% of the time i drive it).
    Thanks

    2011 Mk6 tdi usa- 2nd owner with less than 1000 miles left on the limited warranty the dpf died. After months of back and forth with the local dealer ship and having to email VW of America to replace the clogged dpf i realized America vw has no idea how to fix vw Diesel's haha. Anywho. After that chaos of that getting replaced I got the Kerma tune #1 and dsg tune. Its been a great car but diving in the city on short drives you slowly f**k yourself in a bad way.
    On long distance drives close to 80 mph with 19lb wheels (heavy 🥺) i average 43-50mpg after diesel gate I'll take that as a win. This car has been a consistent motion of looking at the glass half full ❤. It gets me there. This Video Was Great and Informative. Thank You!

  • @redthreadzen

    Thanks for this tdi tuning guide. Very helpful and comprehensive. I have the CFFB a solid little engine with good tunabilty. The remap really does bring the 104kw/140hp engine to life. It removes the initial lag and gives it the pep it should have come with from factory. I call it "removing the grandma mode". I'm gessing they save they save the peppy tune for their Audi group cars.
    My tune comes from Viezu (local to you, I'm in Australia) it's good for the price. I'd say a bit conservative in it's mapping but that allows for better overall reliabilty, and slightly better fuel economy.
    Slightly off subject, what do you think about DSG tuning? Is it a good drivability mod or is really a race track mod?

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому +2

      DSG tuning is worth doing, but work out what you want and get a tuner that can set it up for you. If you can tweak the sport mode and leave the stock drive alone it will give you a two trick pony. Going too extreme on the DSG change points can cause excessive wear though.
      The stock tunes certainly leave a lot to work with, but I think if these all had 200hp they would never sell a petrol engine again so cynically I think they dialed them back.

    I got a 2006 Golf Mk5 BMN , love the car , and for a while I'm using only premium diesel which really gives the car a good feel overall, just bought a bkd inlet manifold to remove the swirl flaps and to clean the egr , my only problem is that the sometimes in a few conditions the engine sounds way more louder( only when moving) if I park it and leave it run it stays at 1000 rps but after 30 seconds it drops back to normal at 800 and the loud sound stops. I'm gonna check the injectors values one of this days but I'm afraid to see 🙈. Any ideas what would create that problem? Try to take care of it with the premium fuel and oil and filter changes at 6000-7000 miles with 5-30 ravenol and mann filters.

      DPF regenerations, raises idle to 1000rpm and EGT's go through the roof. It will smell super hot, it's burning off the soot but dumping extra fuel that explodes in the mainfold / DPF itself. Radiator fans will run for a time after stopping, and unless you finish the regen it will keep trying to do it on next startup. Happens about every tank full when new, drops to about 400kms as it fills, down to every 50kms when almost terminally full.

    Do you think it’s possible to add a turbo to run alongside the factory engine and turbo but set up as a compound system. I’ve seen plenty of rear mounted turbos. I have reasonable mechanical skills an I could make the exhaust myself. But is this a stupid road to keep going down? I’ve got an high mileage 8PA so I was planning on changing the engine myself anyway.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  7 місяців тому

      Anything is possible, but here are my thoughts.
      Flow from these engines is quite low, the RPM redline is around 5000rpm so there is not much scope for spooling up two turbos.
      Space is limited in most engine bays where these are fitted.
      Running two smaller turbos will mitigate these issues and should give a decent spool up and power delivery. You could run into fuel issues as you would with a larger single turbo.
      Audi did produce a biturbo variant of these engines, that might be a good starting place for parts and specs.

      It is confusing isn't it. I'll be focussing a video on the GEN3 2.0 TDi as these were quite different to previous versions and I'll cover this in that video. The more power you start with the greater the tuning potential, often the lower spec engines have smaller injectors, weaker internal components (head bolts etc....) and different turbo units. But it is usually easy to bump these all up by about 30-40hp with a simple remap.

    Hi, will CBBB 170hp 2.0 TDI stay still reliable after remap? And also You don't actually talk about clutch and gearboxes, because after an engine tune they will also suffer and we have to upgrade them. For example I have Audi tt mk2 2.0 TDI manual gearbox and not sure if gearbox will survive tuning.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому

      Yes it should be fine, but it depends on the map and how much extra power. The autoboxes are "weaker" than the manual ones & they generally have a torque limit set in the ECU to protec them.
      I have a video reply for you coming out this week (Friday I think) that you should find interesting, it discusses the options for a virtually risk free mapping experience on an older or higher mileage engine. The Clutch and DMF will usually take the beating instead of the gearbox, in fact I've not heard of gearboxes going after remaps, just worn clutches giving up.

  • @igormoeller
    @igormoeller 2 місяці тому

    Good explanation.. But did you ever tune or seen a 2.0 CR (ie 150ps)
    No intake kits needed..standard intake can be modded to direct easy.
    IC on CR is actually water cooled - so its shit.
    Best option..disable EGR and even remove DPF ...then remap
    No need play with cam pulley timing.. stock turbo can delliver nuff Nm to wreck 6 speed gearbox
    430Nm-440Nm is usually max..and limited by stage 1 remap
    On PD's u can mod just 1 sensor to get 20% gain.. (by exploit factory margins) ;)
    Most FWD diesels have traction problems...lower 60/40mm helps a LOT

  • @JLongTom
    @JLongTom 9 місяців тому

    Really informative video! I have a related question: I have a 110hp EA288 I want to tune and I've heard different things about the 228mm clutch and 5-speed gearbox the engine is mated to. The gearbox at least is supposedly rated to just 250nm of torque, which is what the engine already generates stock. Even the "safe" remaps I've seen bring this up to 350nm (with 165hp), not to speak of the 400nm of high torque remaps. I haven't seen figures for the stock clutch (Skoda Yeti 2016). Upgraded clutches such as the Sachs one supposedly take "15% extra torque above stock", but I wonder if this will just pass the burden to the transmission, which will be even more expensive to replace. Do you have any experience with remapping this engine in terms of its effect on clutch and transmission reliability?

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  9 місяців тому +1

      Don't worry too much about the manual transmissions, these are pretty solid across the board - the dual mass flywheel cuts out many harmful vibrations and keeps it running smoothly. DMF's do fail at higher mileages whether you remap or not.
      Clutches usually go far beyond manufacturer quoted tolerances. I would usually try the map and see how the clutch fares with it, I've seen low mileage clutches slip and high mileage clutches cope without a glitch so it depends so much on the condition of a clutch.
      If you start to experience slipping which is normal as a clutch starts to age anyway but a remap can hasten this up then replace it with a more solid upgrade option. The Sachs units have a good reputation.
      The other thing is that although peak torque is at 350nm will you be in this zone for much of the time? For many drivers this will only be a blip now and then with most of the time spent at the lower torque, low load, low RPM ranges.

    • @JLongTom
      @JLongTom 9 місяців тому

      @@torquecars Thanks Waynne for the really helpful reply! That's good to know re the 5-speed transmission --- I've read the same line over and over again about the 5-speed box being weaker but have seen very few reports of failures even with remapped engines, so even if true that they're weaker it doesn't seem to end up mattering.
      The map I'd probably get has a fairly nice-looking table top on the torque graph but it does reach 350nm by around 1750rpm before further increasing a bit more to the peak of 365nm at around 2500rpm. If this sounds too aggressive perhaps the tuners could shave the corner off the table to get a more gradual increase. Failing that, I do consider myself a fairly smooth driver, so with the kind of throttle inputs I'd be using at that point early in the rev range, perhaps the peak torque wouldn't be being generated.
      I'll keep the uprated Sachs clutch in mind then and consider upgrading to it at the very first signs of slippage. Alternatively, would pre-emptively changing to it allow me to keep the existing DMF, which may well be in good condition, or do you always recommend changing it along with the clutch?

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому +1

      Usually works ok, but the fitments do vary slightly, beware that transverse and longitudinal mounted engines have quite different arrangements for the turbo in some cases. It is my understanding that most if not all of the 170 turbos can be modified to be bolt on replacements if they are not, there are a few tutorials around on how to do this. There were also some revisions over the years so choosing a donor turbo from the same year range improves the chances of an easy swap.

      You should really remap, the ecu contains the fuel, boost load etc and if you've swapped the turbo these need adjusting. In some cases you get away with a straight swap as they are "similarish" you'll not have much more power, a slightly different boost profile but in most cases you'll get an error code/limp mode and an over boost condition but it will depend on the way the turbo was setup when it was installed.

A simple remap on that should give you around 45hp more power and 55lbft of torque for max economy a remap of around 30hp should be in the sweet spot for power vs economy and be better than the stock setup. It has the EDC17C64 ecu on it. Stock power at 103hp just seems to low when you consider what this can do.

      I've not played with the biturbo so can only go on what I've read and heard. The fuel supply is upraded on these engines so you have more headroom than on single turbo setups. A simple remap should see you hit your power target. Intercooler upgrades would be worth it, the stock ones really are quite small and only just cope with standard power. You can swap out the twin turbos for twin bigger or hybrid units, you can switch them to a large single turbo (which will have terrible lag on these engines but give great top end power). If there is a single bigger Twinscroll turbo released for these it will be worth considering, but I'm not aware of any around yet.

      @torquecars Yes I will happily send you it over so you can use it as intended. But I won't be sending it over until after the Easter holidays weeks as cars going for a front end respray haha.
      I went for a full 3 inch system so from the downpipe all the way to the rear. If that helps. It's the cr170 stage 1. Pulls like a train. But I'd of liked to try the 2.5 inch system as it might of been more beneficial for the power output.

      There are a few ways, find your maintenance or service booklet on the front page - it may also be showing on the registration document as an engine code - the 3 or 4 letters are usually the engine code. Also the engine will have a code stamped in it it is found on the driver's side front on the engine block. You may also find the engine code on a stamp on the cylinder head.

    7:12 I hate when people lie about remapping will not lower mpg. To make more hp, you have to burn more fuel.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому +1

      Yes my friend you are right remapping does not LOWER MPG unless you drive it harder on 2.0 TDi diesels a remap will increase or rather improve your MPG in most cases with most drivers reporting an improvement in fuel economy after remapping a diesel engine.
      A point to note is that remapping doesn't always add more fuel, often the duration and timing of the fuel injection will make the engine more efficient. The increased efficiency means more power from less fuel and less heat lost in frictional losses typical of higher RPM driving.
      For example on my 2.0TDi I did see 7% improved fuel economy as will most others but this depends on the map chosen and the way you drive. This was not an economy map but a performance map taking my 140 to around 175.
      If you car is now making 100hp at 3000rpm rather than at 4000rpm you need less throttle and hence will use less fuel to achieve the same rate of travel and acceleration.
      Gasoline engines are quite different and rarely show a substantially improved MPG.

    What is the cause of excessive fuel consumption. Normally consumers at 4.8 , now it's doing 13.5. Throttle is heavy , power seems to proform although feels clogged.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому

      The first thing I would check is the injectors and spray pattern. A decent injector cleaner can make quite a difference on most higher mileage cars. I'm guessing it is running rich and you are probably getting a fair bit of soot. Other areas to focus on are the sensors in the engine, they may be forcing it to dump more fuel, Lambda and Air metering are often the culprits on engines running too rich.

    18:57 this. Lugging a turbo car is never a good idea, my tuner told me specifically as well, not to push it below 2k RPM as it would damage the rods. Makes sense, I am remapped to around 460 NM, wouldn't want that much power anywhere near the 1.5k RPM mark

    A question - does a BMR turbo fit a BKP engine?

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому +1

      One thing I've learnt is not to make very specific recommendations without seeing the car, there are often odd regional variations. Checking part codes and seeing if they match is usually the best way to tell. For many production years the Passat used an inline layout which uses slightly different turbo pipework from a transverse one which is the usual area people get caught out when they get say an A3 170 turbo for a 140 Passat. The 170 turbos will generally (if they have a manifold) bolt on to the 2.0 TDi block as they are all the same block and ports but some pipe work and minor modification may be required to the turbo in some cases. I would guess a worst case scenario is about 4 hours work swapping over the turbo hardware to get it working, there are guides and videos online of achieving this for most setups. If you get a definitive answer please post it here and it will, i'm sure help out many others.
