    I have an XE-1 and the first lens I bought for it was the 7Artisans 25 mm 1.8 and after that I bought the Viltrox 85 mm 1.8
    Both lenses were ok and good to use for Street Photography
    And recently I bought an adapter so I can mount my old Canon 50 mm 1.8 FD Lens to the XE-1 and to be honest it’s a joy to use for Street Photography and even portrait photo shoots
    I do recommend mounting old vintage lenses to any Fujifilm camera
    The mix between film simulation and the old glass is very nostalgic and wonderful
    The problem is most good Fuji lenses are kinda expensive to buy but it’s a good thing that we can use cheap lenses on our Fuji cameras …
    Thank you for this video and keep up the good work mate …

    The original bundle lens, the XF 18-55, is by far the best lens to begin and evolve with. Second to this… the 50-140 f 2.8… amazing lens, especially for portraits - landscapes as well, in telephoto ranges…

    My top five lenses! Remember my primes are for street photography.
    1) 56 1.2 WR
    2) 18 1.4
    3) 33 1.4
    4) 90 F2
    5) 50 F2
    6) 23 F1.4
    The two lenses I carry for travel and especially nature photography.
    16-55 2.8
    90 F2
    I find that you can speed up auto focus on the nonlinear motors by using limit focus. You’d be surprised at the difference it makes. A good starting point is 6.5 feet to infinity. I’ve had both the old version of the 56 1.2 and the new version. The new version actually auto focuses faster, just not by much. But I am getting more hits than misses, by a longshot! 🖖

    • @sergiuc_5010
      @sergiuc_5010 Місяць тому

      How does the 56 1.2 WR fair in street photography? Why would you recommend it for street photo, and what's the biggest challenge with it?
      I have it, but i rarely use it :(.
      I mostly use my 33 f1.4 for street and 90mm f2

    • @simon359
      @simon359 Місяць тому

      @@sergiuc_5010
      The 56 1.2 WR version is faster AF than the old lens, so I like it for street photography for that reason. I get much better percentage of hits.
      It’s smaller than the 90 F2, so it’s easier to carry. It’s also so sharp that I can crop easily with a 40 megapixel camera and not miss a beat!
      The biggest challenge is, it does not have a linear focusing motor, therefore I use limit focus from 6.5 to Infinity to speed up the auto focus. That means you have to remember to remove the limit focus when photographing up closer. Also, it’s a faster speed lens for low light situations. And if you’re doing portraits, you don’t have to step back so far from your subject, as you would with the 90 F2. 135 mm is a lot farther distance than an 85.
      I just found that it replaced my 90 more often, to the point that I only bring the 90 F2 out when I’m hiking in the mountains!

    Mein absolute favourite lens is the 50-140mm 2.8. I have been using Canon (last camera was 1DX Mark 3) for years and switched to Fuji since a couple of years. In my opinion, the 50-140 is the best lens ever. The 16-55 gets the second place.

    Love your input and can definitely relate.
    For me mine are as follows.
    1: 50-140 F2.8 (not as versatile, but when you make it work, the subject separation on the long end coupled with the sharpness just makes for sure a fun and enjoyable lens to use)
    2: 33 F1.4 (optical brother to your beloved 18, for me it's the 3D like render and snappy AF)
    3: 16-55 F2.8, insanely sharp useful and render past 40mm is just magic!
    4: 8-16 F2.8 (it can be a challenging lens to use, but when you work it out, the perspective you can get is just incredible, and unique)
    5: 16 F1.4, older clunky lens but this was my first ever experience with a prime and yeah it set the bar high for me, this is what really showed me what kinda of IQ fujis can pull out of the bag!
    Ultra sharp and crisp, beautiful bokeh which can provide some interesting results when used in conjunction with the ultra close minimum focus distance)
    What's next for me?
    I definitely want a longer prime lens to give me that more absolute subject separation for environmental portraits.
    90 F2 is the hottest contender mostly due proven track AF and sharpness, the viltrox 75 and the 56 are also considerations.
    Big major consideration now is chromatic aberrations and coma aberrations for the content of astro photography!
    And the 100-400 vs the 70-300 for me!

    Thank you for the review and the details on the lenses mentioned.
    Been shooting Fuji since 2013, started off with the kit lens combined with the one and only 35/1.4 - and over the years bought and sold many Fuji lenses, ending up with focal lengths between 10 and 140mm today and only one 3rd party lens, the compact 27/2.8 TTArtisan pancake. As I use to change preferences and subjects it took a while to determine a pretty versatile and portable setup, and here are three lenses I wouldn‘t wanna miss.
    XF18/2 (yeah) - XF23/1.4 (non-WR) - 35/1.4 (wouldn‘t sell it for a bag of money)
    I don‘t care about the ultimate sharpness, and using the lenses above I appreciate the imperfect sharpness of the 35/1.4 wide open, the versatile angle of the 23/1.4 and the pretty much sophisticated look the 18/2 creates… all of them creating a beautiful combination with my X-Pro3.
    Lenses I don‘t really use or like to use: the 14/2.8 and the 56/1.2 APD unfortunately turned out to not match my needs or the way I prefer to take pictures. Anyway, for the rare use and the low re-selling prices they will stay. Unmatched portrait qualities of the 56/1.2 do not convince me to switch from the beautiful 35/1.4 - and as far as the 14/2.8 is concerned, I do appreciate the variability of the 10-24/4 zoom lens.
    Now: Go out and take pictures.

    These are my opinions, from my workflow. Where I place a significant weighting to Will it make me money or save me money when I buy any new tool.
    An Enthusiast, (or someone with disposable income) who just wants the "best" and doesn't look at profit and loss makes different buying decisions, but if a client is happy with the results using product A they wont pay more for similar results using Product B, because it cost more to buy. As a portrait photographer from the other side of the world I don't use anything as long as a XF 90mm F/2.0 (my studio just is not that big)
    At the 56mm length I have tested a lot.
    the original XF 60mm F/2.4, the Original XF 56mm F/1.2, the new 56mm F/1.2 WR, the 50mm F/2, and the 50mm F/1.0 (all be it for a very short time) and the SIgma 56mm F/1.4
    Which is the "Best" in my opinion the 56mm F/1.2 R WR but at £1000 in UK is not cheap, the 50mm F/1.0 is available in the sales for not much more but it performs worse at least at launch as far as autofocus goes.
    At number 2, I'll throw in a curve ball, the Sigma 56mm F/1.4 DC DN it is a much better lens in my opinion than the original XF 56mm F/1.2 and is 90% of the way to the new XF56 mm F/1.2 R WR for less than half the price (at least in the UK)
    At number 3 I'd place the XF 50mm F/2.0 around the same price as the Sigma 56mm F/1.4 and is a good lens at an affordable price
    At number 4 I'd place the Halo product the 50mm F/1.0 it is a nice lens the render is beautiful, however it is big, heavy, and overkill the the differences without pixel peeping between this and the 56mm F/1.2 or Sigma 56mm F/1.4 is really not that noticeable
    At a joint 5th place, I'd place the original 56mm F/1.2, unless this lens is available used for significantly less than a new Sigma 56mm F/1.4 I can't see the point, it's way slower to focus, it hunts in low light, yes it is a F/1.2 not a F/1.4 but DOF is so shallow at those apertures does it matter? & the 60mm F/2.4 although fantastic contrast and detail, it suffers from LoCa until stopped down to F/4, which is less desirable.
    For me the Best Value for money is the Sigma, and when printed to 18" x 12" the results are so similar it is hard to justify spending double the money (or upto treble on the 50mm F/1).
    I never shoot as wide as the 18mm, but the XF23mm F/1.4 is fantastic, and the Sigma 24mm F/1.4 is super sharp.
    At 35mm I'm in the Original F/1.4 owners camp, but if i was buying again i'd get the 33mm F/1.3, if on a budget, i'd skip the XF 35mm F/2.0 and get the XC35mm F2.0, same glass in a plastic build for £150
    Nice video

      Love the detailed comment!! Thank you!
      I haven’t personally tried either the Sigma 56 or the 56 1.2 WR, I have heard good things about both but the sigma lacking an aperture ring just turns me off it, and as for the 56 1.2 WR, well I love the 1.0 for its uniqueness and I’m willing to make the compromise when using it as it’s just such a special lens in my eyes.
      I’ll probably end up trying it out at some point, and perhaps I just have a golden copy of the OG 56 1.2 but mine is just fantastic, sharp and characterful and such a joy to use, especially on older X bodies!
      As for the XC 35 f2, yes it is the same optics but once again no aperture ring = I’m not interested haha
      The added weather sealing and build quality improvement is worth the incremental price increase especially when buying used imo.

    I purchased Tamron's 17-70 2.8 for my Fuji X-T5. It is a fine lens with excellent sharpness, but it hunts a bit as a low light dance performance lens. I decided that even though Fuji's 16-55mm 2.8 lens is an older lens, it will focus more consistently in low light and that it should have better contrast wide open than the Tamron. The replacement for the 16-55 2.8 lens in the future will no doubt be outstanding, but I need results now.

    Great list!! I have contemplated the 16-55 F2.8, but was put off with the size and weight of the lens. I have to say that the superb little "kit" 18-55 does an excellent job. I will probably go for the newly announced 16-50 to replace the 18-55 as it will resolve the 40mp of my XT5

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  6 місяців тому +1

      If you don’t shoot video the Sigma 18-50 is a great option and it’s so lightweight!! Plus you get a constant 2.8 aperture and it resolves the XT5’s 40mpx perfectly.
      Just sucks it’s missing an aperture ring but it’s like 90% as good as the 16-55 image quality wise and so small!

    My choices are:
    For the standard zooms my favorite is the Tamron 17-70. The 16-55 is sharp and a good lens, but i was never a fan of the bokeh. To accompany this lens i take the 13mm 1.4 Viltrox, the original 23mm 1.4 (bad AF, but i love the rendering, its smaller and lighter than the new one and you can get it really cheap), the original 56 1.2 (same reasons) and the 50 2.0 (small, light, great IQ, fast AF).

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  5 місяців тому

      Really? The bokeh is so lovely on the 16-55 in my opinion - so smooth and not distracting. Never tried the Tamron but have heard good things, having VC would be great for video!
      The original 23 1.4 is a lens which I really wanted to love but sold it within two weeks of buying it because the autofocus was so terrible on my copy it probably hit focus 40% of the time, when it did it was great though and the manual focus clutch system is so great.
      The 50 f2 is a stellar lens too!

  • @scottswank
    @scottswank 5 місяців тому

    The 16-55mm f2.8 is a beast, but there's a solid argument for buying it and skipping anything else until you find a need. I mean sure, add a 23mm f2 or 35mm f2 if you want something lighter.

    • @rudermanphoto

Total for your first choice lenses is about $7000+ so it’s right up there given the discounts available on Canon glass at the moment.😮😢Also no mention of the sloppy aperture ring on the 18mm f1.4 mentioned by many reviewers which would put me right off even contemplating it. If you assume price used or bought smart and not paying full retail you can easily find all 5 of these for a hair over 5k aud.
      50 1.0: I paid $1500
      90 f2: I paid $800
      16-55: I paid $1000
      32 1.8: I paid $800
      18 1.4: I paid $1100
      The 50 1.0 is definitely the most expensive option on the list and if it’s too expensive you can always get the 56 1.2 for much less money.
      The aperture ring on the 18 1.4 is a legitimate non issue, I have no problems with it and I don’t really see how that would stop you from considering it given how incredible the optical quality of it is, at least it has a aperture ring unlike any Sigma lenses lol

    I find it interesting how negative you are on the 18 f2, as the rendering of that is often regarded as a good match to the Zeiss 32mm (as in: they think the 18 match better with that than the Fuji 35mm f1.4). Personally I don't have the Zeiss, but I love the color rendering out of the 18 f2, and I'm quite curious about getting the Zeiss.
    Here's my current top 5 (mind you, I'm pro photographer, and I haven't tested that many lenses):
    1. Voigtlander 27mm f2 (tiny, as in smaller than the 27mm 2.8, richest color I've seen out of a lens, wonderful characterful rendering in general, incredible build quality and feel)
    2. XF 35mm f2 (wonderful workhorse of a lens, tiny, fast focusing, rich in color and tonality)
    3. XF 50mm f2 (just about perfect, rich colors, and faster focusing than any of the other short teles, and like you, I like the focal length)
    4. XF 18mm f2 (very small, very pleasing rendering, sharper than people say honestly)
    5. XF 18-55mm (incredible for a kit lens, I sometimes mistook shots I took for shots taken on primes, I'm just not a zoom person though)
    I've also tried the Viltrox 27mm f1.2 and I feel like it maybe deserves a top spot, but I only tried it for a day.
    The XF 23mm f2 ought to be on the list as well as I've taken heaps of photos with that (it's what I started with in Fuji), it's very versatile, but I just don't love that focal length. I prefer 35… and especially: 27mm.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  6 місяців тому

      I don’t quite get your question, do you mean why would I pick multiple primes over just one zoom lens in that aperture range?
      Primes in general are going to be a lot sharper and more compact then a zoom lens, as well as usually having a noticeably wider aperture too.
      The reason people call the 16-55 a “bag of primes” is because its sharpness and overall image quality is almost prime level, but subsequently you do have a lens which is like 3x the size of primes and with an aperture that still isn’t as wide as the primes would be.

    • @martingreenberg870
      @martingreenberg870 5 місяців тому +1

      Congratulations on your XT5 purchase.
      The good thing about getting a body above your skill level is you can grow into it. Until then you have the “A” on your settings. I like shooting aperture priority. I set the ISO to auto. I don’t mess with that. One thing less to think about. I set the shutter speed to 1/250 to freeze the subject. I control the f setting based upon the frequently changing light.
      @rudemanohoto outlined the advantages of a prime. Zooms are convenient. Lots of focal lengths. Generally at the cost of a slower shutter. Zooms have more glass elements so relatively at the cost of clarity. Zooms are a great place to start. Discovering your preferred focal length is important. Do you need a fast lens? Not all of us do.
      Watch UA-cam videos to learn about photography and your camera in particular. Your camera can do tricks. You need to learn what the tricks are and if you want to use them. Then learn how to access the camera setting. Take a basic photography class. The camera store may offer some. The continuing education at the local community college is also a good place to start. Go to the library. The books are free. Borrow some books. They also probably have genres books. Portraits, street, landscape, etc. Join the local camera club. There is a lot of knowledge available from the club members.
      Take your new camera for a walk. Take pictures. Lots of pictures. Henri Cartier-Bresson, a famous 20th century photographer said your 1st 10,000 images will be your worst. Try and fail. That is how we learn. Please fail during non critical times. Don’t learn how to do photography during your child’s birthday party.
      Try out features on your camera. See if you like them. The important thing is to fail. That is the easy part. Then learn what you did (the fault is always with the photographer. The camera is a computer attached to a lens. It doesn’t know what it is doing or what you want.). Have fun with your camera. You spent a couple of grand on your light capturing machine. Once you learn how to use your camera You’ll be happy you bought your camera.
      I do street photography. This is a great time of the year. There are parades, street markets &, state fairs. Take a lot of photos. Get a large memory card (your body has dual card slots. Get two large memory cards.) and take many photos. They are free. Play with shutter speed and aperture. Shoot portrait and landscape perspective. Do that by turning your camera. Just to confuse you, your camera does really good video. Play with that too. If you like video you will have to purchase a microphone. The mic plug in is 3.5mm. I don’t know about the XT5. Many Fuji bodies have a 2.5mm jac. Curse you Fuji. Why do you do that? The camera store can tell you. If the 5 has the dreaded 2.5mm jac the 2.5->3.5 adapter is ~$10 so don’t worry.
      You purchased a wonderful camera. Now go out and play with your new toy.

    I had fuji xh2s and xt4 and most of the fuji lenses red badge and lm WR new primes I sell them all and I switch to Sony since most of my clients in the Middle East prefer the Sony system in commercial work and they think that fuji is unprofessional system.

      Perception does mean a lot. Too bad that people with no photography knowledge have to dictate what you use based on a brand name. Reminds me of motorcycling. Ask 9 out of ten people what the best motorcycle is, you get Harley Davidson. The more interesting statistic is that 9 people out of 10 people also know nothing about motorcycles. Same with photo gear.

    I agree with EVERYTHING you said about the 16-55mm 2.8 !!! Probably my favorite lens. Used to have it on the X-T4...was great ! Gonna buy it again.

  • @edc5338

    I have the 16-55 and that is my go-to lens as that is the range I shoot in the most. Coming from heavy Nikons, I have no problem with the weight. I also love my 18 1.4. I also have the 16-80 which is a great lens.

    • @mortenthorpe
      @mortenthorpe 5 місяців тому

      I respectfully disagree about the 16-80 f4… terrible bokeh rendering, and f/4 doesn’t cut it for a lot of uses, portraiture in all but studio lighting. Choose the 18-55 variable aperture instead, and it’s also lighter. To me, the 16-80 if the absolute worst value of all XF lenses (I don’t cover XC lenses, because those are just squeaky toys)

      @@mortenthorpe I have the XC15-45 and it is a sharp lens although the zoom is quirky.

      @@edc5338that literally says two things about your need for quality lenses - 1. You don’t need them, 2. You don’t know how to evaluate trash from quality- sharpness is a bare minimum for any modern lens - bokeh rendering and color reproduction (micro contrast also) are super important as well

    Curious if you’ve tried the other Zeiss lenses for Fuji, the 12 and 50?

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  6 місяців тому +1

      I haven’t! I would love to though, they both look awesome, I just haven’t really needed an ultra wide or a macro lens for any of the work I do.
      But maybe in the future I’ll pick them up and complete the trio!

    Honestly id agree with your opinions here. Unfortunately most of the zooms arent that good most of all sharpness is lacking. I know primes are typically sharper but with other brands at least its close. Fujis zooms are noticeably softer.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  3 місяці тому

      The 16-55 is awesome, and comparable to many full frame zooms I’ve tried - can’t speak for the other Fuji zooms though as I haven’t used them.

    thank you for the video, man.
    i just got an xt-5 and i'm primarily a studio portrait photographer, sometimes events. i got these lenses:
    1. Fujifilm xf 35mm f/2 wr lens
    2. Sigma 56mm f/1.4
    am i good to go ? also, if i were to add one or two extra lenses, what would you recommend i get ?

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto  Місяць тому

      100% get yourself the 90 f2!!!
      Amazing for studio portraits, amazing for reach at events, just amazing overall!
      I’d also get something a bit wider, if budget allows it the 18 1.4 WR as your general walk around lens at events, 35 is a bit too tight for that. You can also use it for environmental portraits too, but if you can’t afford it the 23 f2 is a good choice as well.
