Sounds like Sue Birtwistle was almost single-handedly responsible for Colin Firth playing Darcy. One of the most legendarily perfect castings ever. THANK YOU, SUE!
They can remake this movie a hundred times and it will never be better or closer to the book than this production. Absolutely brilliant and I'm so thankful they took the time to film what is essentially the book word for word.
Yes this is the absolute gold standard in adapting this classic novel to the small screen. It certainly stands the test of time as Alison Steadman said. It’s hard to imagine that it could be bettered. Austen I’m sure would have approved the attention to detail. It took 9 years. Fabulous.
allison steadman was phenomenal as mrs. bennet. i think her experience in stage acting contributed immensely to her performance. i loved how her acting was purposely overdramatic and over the top. it actually contrasted with the subtle acting of the rest of the cast in such a brilliant way. it made viewers exasperated yet highly entertained by her character. i have a renewed respect for stage actors/actresses. well done, allison (o^-^o)
I ADORE this P&P production with my whole heart. Every single actor/character-- from Lizzy and Darcy to Hill, the Longbourne maid, is dear to me. So it makes me super-happy to see this on here. I own the dvd but without all these extra features, so thank you! There will never be another P&P like this one!!!!!
@@ds1868 there is a 1985 version as well. it stars Elizabeth Garvie as Elizabeth Bennet and David Rintoul as Mr. Darcy. i like that version too, bc of how close it was to the book. it often is included in a six movie Jane Austen set of BBC adaptations. So, i meant that version and the Jennifer Ehle version as well.
Hats off to you all! You've given so much pleasure to so many with this 'work of art'. So much talent and good team work to produce this jewel in the BBC's crown. Thank you all.
This is the best version of all the movies. I loved the casting, I thought all were performed beautifully. Mr. Bennet and Mr. Collins were not only very good actors but both portrayed each character different than in other productions. Mr. Bennett made you love him and Mr. Collins was hilarious perfection. So obnoxious, snobby, ridiculous but not over the top, I just loved him as well. As I did Colin Firth, my favorite actor. So charming, though not at first. By the end you just had to smile and sigh.
Zooni Sami I can't believe that version is actually thought to be considered comparable to the Colin Firth version. Mr. Darcy in the Knightley version is the worst case of acting I have ever seen
Dont even bother,- that Knightly version does not deserve to be even mentioned in the same sentence. It is a horrific, lazily done crap version as if they had just read the back cover of the book. Just horrible thing to be on celluloid.
Zooni Sami The only thing that was slightly interesting about that version was that they fleshed Darcy out a bit more. I would have liked Colin’s Darcy to have more dialogue.
I just found Lark Rise To Candleford and Julia Sawalha is just a spectacular actress. She is a completely different character in everything she does from Saffy on Ab Fab to Dorcas Lane on Lark Rise. One of the most underrated actresses in my opinion.

Great brief documentary. i love this production and it's my favorite, alongside the 1980 version (yeah, i know that's an unpopular opinion, but there it is). :D
Why do modern people interpret things only as about sex and money? Of course humans need sex and money but that is not what Pride and Prejudice was all about. Otherwise, we can say that all literary masterpieces are about sex and money when we strip it down to the barest minimum.
I like this Victorian style and 1995 version is best, i don't care about this love story in Victorian time where this based, Jane Austen but i like this Victorian style yes.
To be completely pedantic, this is "regency". Victorian is 1837-1901, that's the age of Brönte, Dickens, and Sherlock Holmes then. Sorry I couldn't resist correcting this.
