I have taught Pride and Prejudice as a professor of English literature,, so I am familiar with every nuance of the story. When I have seen this version of the book (I saw all the other versions including the movie) I was enthralled. It was as if each character was tailor-made for the particular role he/she had to play. This is absent from other versions. And I just love every one of those stars. I often see this serial and is never had enough of it.
The scene where "Elizabeth" and "Georgianna" played the piano and when Elizabeth came to Georgianna's rescue when Wickham's name was mentioned is actually my favorite. The look of gratitude and love in Colin's (Mr. Darcy's) eyes was one which likely has made many women weak in the knees. I have seen every version of Pride and Prejudice made, This BBC version is my favorite and Colin just took my breath away.
Absolutely agree with you have watched this over and over again and never get fed up watching it i watched the film version only once and find that this mini series is much better
Yes Jennifer Ehle made a beautiful Elizabeth… coy, with beautiful mesmerising eyes with a twinkle of mischief… a perfect blushing English rose…… simply the best for this portrayal of Jane Austen’s Elizabeth…!!!❤❤
Everyone was wonderful and the music through the whole series is absolutely beautiful it's still my favourite series, bravo to everyone involved in creating my favourite Jane Austen book.
I believe all the actors in this version was perfect. All of the characters was so well played by them. I have watched it several times and will watch it again
One of the best productions ever.. Great story, character, acting, screenplay, costume, screenwriter, director, producer, music, location. All came together perfectly.
Ha sido la mejor serie de todos los tiempos la actuación de cada actor es magnífica y no me canso de verla felicidades 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻saludos desde Ciudad de México 🇲🇽
He’s such a fantastic actor. It’s those small moments that really set him apart, and make the character of Darcy so human as we see those initial cracks in the armor. I get the idea that he really studied him from every angle in order to catch all of those beautiful nuances. Of course, the director gets some credit as well! Also check him out in The King’s Speech if you haven’t already. Flawless.
At that point 2:48, it appears as if Darcy wanted to laugh. When Lizzy replies "as you can see," Darcy gives a slight (wry) smile. Darcy takes Lizzy to her sister but stays a few steps behind. I guess it is here, as writer requested, the Darcy decided that he planned to deal with Lizzy on another level.
This version is the closest to the book, I love it. The old one with Lawrence Olivier had the prettyest cast, but it may as well have been a different book lol.
This was a time when the BBC knew how to make drama programmes. During the last few years to say it is poor is a understatement. The actors used cannot speak clearly but mumble their lines. The only series that is not in this present rubbish is Death In Paradise but this is now coming to an end and nothing is replacing it. I am now replacing my old videos and buying the DVD version so that I can renew the wonderful programmes we used to stay glued to our TV’s watching in our millions. Do you remember those days BBC?
I love Colin Firth's little... *thing* he does, the look on his face and the movement of his head after Jennifer Ehle says "would you be so kind kind as to take me to her?" at 2:55 :D
Yes! I love the little humorous smirk he has on his face after he says on foot? He was smitten with Lizzie from that point on. She was that combination of country, intelligence, and sophistication that turned him on.
I was 19 when this was first shown on BBC...the same age Elizabeth Bennett at the start of the novel and just ADORED this series...counted down the days to the next episode 😊
@@OGimouse1 Totally makes sense. It's just TMI for me. Part of the reason I love Austen is the relative innocence of her subjects and the emphasis on chastity and propriety in society at that time. I won't pretend the carnal nature of things didn't exist, because, well, of course it did and it's definitely appealing. I just like to think of it in less crude terms as that. That probably sounds somewhat prudish but oh well.
@@iwillstom The whole point of manners and culture is to put a patina of social grace over top of our natural carnal urges and responses. Don't pretend that people used to be sexless robots - that's not doing Austen or yourself any favours. The fact that Darcey was turned on by her is perfectly natural and helps explain his fascination with her. What do you suppose Lydia & Wickham were up to when they snuck off to London? Do you imagine that was perfectly "innocent"? In the latter half of the production, after his proposal to Elizabeth got shut down, we see Darcey at fencing practice swearing to himself that he'll get over her, and the instant he sees her again it's obvious he's head over heels for her and his vow to himself vanished. One of the things I enjoy most about this production (and I've watched it countless times) is the subtle interplay of emotions you see on the characters faces as we understand what's going on beneath the surface, and then we get to see how they deal with these emotions through the stiff layer of old British etiquette.
What's really impressive is that Jane Austen can't be trashed, even by that awful screenwritng man. You really get the impression that his what-women-want crap is what he himself wants in a man. Fortunately Colin Firth is the perfect Darcy.
Wow, Mr Davies really isn't likeable at all... good thing one can forget about him again fast otherwise some scenes of the movie might be forever ruined.
Andrew Davies gives me the icks. I never interpreted that scene where she walks to Netherfield as a moment Mr Darcy falls in lust with Elizabeth. He looks more stratled, suprised and annoyed than turned on, thankfully. We’re lucky we had such amazing actors for 1995 mini series so we got a soft building UST instead of whatever he intended. I think it’s clear from the novel - it’s her personality, wit and teasing that slowly start to pick up his interest. He is not interested until he starts interacting with her. That’s when he starts getting captivared by her eyes etc. He’s more demisexual if anything.
In the penguin classic addition he is called Wickham. I try and get the penguins as they are true to the text or explain any differences and old phrases.
The man who impressed Elizabeth at first, tried to run off with Georgiana Darcy, and did carry off Lydia Bennett is called Wickham both in the movie and in the book. Captain Carter is a very minor character in the movie.
I first read the book in 70’s... prolly 74-75. Loved it... except the mother and Lydia... thought they were both horrible creatures. Agreed with Darcy’s summation of them. Then 20 years later I saw this version! Have seen 4 movies on TV. And the latest one at the theatre. I love them all... however, the one from the 40’s just didn’t fit the books description... the Bennett were to rich.
The one thing I really didn't like about this version is that the actors and actresses for the most part, were at least 10 years too old for their characters
I still watch this, 23 years later. I was 24 when this came out and now, at 47, this version remains my favorite!!
i will never tire of watching this, Im 58.. timeless.
Me too. Watched this every week with my daughter who is now 37. Still watch it from time to time on my box set.
I went to Lyme park where they filmed this. You get to put on period clothes and run trough the house and grounds. One of the best days of my life
Me as well! I was 21 when it came out and still never tire of watching it!
Me too. I watch it once a year

I’m doing it now - I’m watching it now every day or every other day due to depression.
In my heart, Colin Firth is the ONLY Mr. Darcy. I never tire of this series. :)
Ditto.
It never gets old❤️
💯💯💯
I agree. And Jennifer the only Elizabeth.
Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth were perfect for their parts.
This version of Pride and Prejudice is my absolute favorite

Saludos, hermana. A mi también me encanta!
I love the way Mr Firth tries not to laugh after he says "On foot?". So glad he finally won an Oscar.
but sadly for royalist propaganda (far too much of that)- he is excellent in P&P, which is marvellous all round.
I thought he was going to burst controlling a different urge.. ☺☺☺

I was watching this today on the drama channel. It is still the definitive version.
Lizzy's mother is the best adaption i think

The stuff they are churning out now is third rate. Trying to rewrite Dicken's is a low point. They massacred War of the Worlds too!
I love Colin Firth's little... *thing* he does, the look on his face and the movement of his head after Jennifer Ehle says "would you be so kind kind as to take me to her?" at 2:55 :D
Go to 1:40 and listen to at least 2:10
"Oh, I'll take you--. Oh, to your sister T.T"

oh Lord, thanks Andrew Davies, I'm never going to be able to watch that scene the same again! lol
2.00 lol I never knew that....brilliant! we love this version of Pride & predudice.
The best cast ever and the best adaptation by far.
Now the mentioned scene has lost it's innocence.
Barish Suraj Quite the filthy thing to inject into such a chaste interaction. Doubt Austen had that in mind when she wrote it.
Ruins that scene for me
It makes sense, though. Everything else was so sterile and she was not. He probably saw her ankles.
