The unexpected meeting at Pemberly is awkward because Elizabeth and Darcy both are aware of having been wrong. She was wrong about Wickham, and .he now realizes his proposal was arrogant and insensitive, not the behavior of a gentleman. Previously Elizabeth had been criticized for showing up in muddy petticoat and wind blown hair after her long walk to Netherfield Park to see Jane. This time it is Darcy who is caught looking disheveled, and looking more like a farm worker than the proper gentleman
The fact is that back then it was very unproper to see people like that, so when you watch this movie and your into it you can feel how embarrassing it could have been for them both.
I've watched this many times and I never noticed this until you pointed it out. I really don't think the awkwardness was due to his apparel, but due to the fact that when they last encountered each other, Lizzie firmly & decidedly rejected him.
Not an expert, but the equivalent on the embarrassment scale would be for a modern man to answer his door in his boxers thinking its one of his friends but instead it's a romantic interest. A gentleman was just not seen in Darcy's state of dishabille by the opposite sex in those days.
It's not a very sexual scene. The drama is about people caught up in the conventions of society. (Elizabeth because she is a woman. D'arcy because he is wealthy. The name of the book is Pride and Prejudice.) Up until that moment we see them in the constraints of their roles. D'arcy sheds that skin, so to speak (in a metaphorical sence ''conquering'' what he sought to in the previous fencing scene,) becoming vulnerable and open and Elizabeth is confronted by how much she uses her ''weaker'' position to claim the moral high ground. (Her aunt had already made her admit that, yeah, she wouldn't mind marrying a rich man.) It sets up the scene where they both hold each others gaze, where she realizes that he is deeply moral and courageous and he sees the same in her. That's sexy.
isnt it ironic that a fully clothed person from the 19th century is totally more erotic than the raunchy pure nudity crap of modern movies!! an imagination is always better than anything someone else creates ..😊😁🍁 oh the piano scene is much better...lol
2:44 Did I just hear Love is All Around by Wet Wet Wet?😳 Because I can’t help but think the song matches well with this version of Pride and Prejudice until I saw this video, at least to me.
What are you talking about? The character Mr Darcy dived in the pond in his shirt. The under water scenes were filmed while he was in a shirt. We can then figure he had a wet shirt on ...while walking away from the pond - carrying his vest & shirt he didn't want to get wet. So yes his shirt was wet, as was his glistening dishevelled curly hair - when he was surprised by Lizzie.
"Bodice Ripper" For Heaven's sakes, Jane Austen will be spinning in her grave. And yes, I was one of the thousands to fall in love with Colin Firth's, Mr Darcy.
I have a hard time believing that the producers were as shocked as they claim. Why else the gauzy shirt? And why not just admit how pleased they were that viewers went nuts about it?

The best adaptation of pride and prejudiced.

The wet shirt scene has his "confident walk" , casual arm swinging , sunlight shing though, the field of yellow flowers. 😍❤😍❤😍❤😍❤😍❤😍

They are exaggerating this too much. It was not so shocking back then at all.
@Toast I meant it was not that shocking in 1995. It woukd have been in 1813
Freudians saw water in two ways: sex / passion
deep spiritual change
This scene hit both.
So awesome! :)
Why do people want to remember he had a wet shirt? It was not wet, it was never wet and yet women want to believe it was.
I think the real question is why do you care Pat?
