Mount it on a solid base plastic pallet. Then build a vented cover box for it using 2 inch thick Styrofoam sheets. Your noise level will go down to under 60db. I own 3 of these but mine are 10kw. I rotate them every 8 hours during power outages using a digital control module which fits on any generator. My fuel consumption is about 1 quart per hour at 1/2 load. Make sure you install a 1 micron bypass oil filter to extend the life of your oil. You can get 500 hrs in between oil changes. I have a 55 gallon external black diesel fuel tank and mostly run mine from Friday to Sunday evening when everyone is home consuming alot of power. This lasts about 3-4 weeks on average. My electric bill went from $300 a month down to about $65 a month.
I have one of these. Bought it about 30 plus years ago. It was used as a computer back up power supply and did little if any work. Started it about 6 years ago after it was stored without any further running since I bought it. It started first ago. After watching this vid I think it's time for another start!! It is rated at 240 volts 50HZ (1500 RPM). Can be converted to 120 volts 60 HZ (1800 RPM) if need be. Australia is 240V 50HZ I am glad I kept it.
I’m sure it could be modified. The governor would have to be set for 1800 rpm. I suppose you could always just try to run it at 1800 and see what happens. YMMV. And at your own risk.
Use the fram XG8 oil filter, it is taller and has more filter media with a grip top . Being 1.5 inches taller means you can actually get a better grip on it
Almost the same engine as the MEP 002A...10 cubic inches smaller. Same sound. My 002A easily powers 3-3500W water heater elements in 3 phase 208 volt. That is well over 9 kW. Nameplate rating is 5kW at a power factor of 0.8 which is 6.25 kW into resistive load. Yes, great engine. Voltage drop on the MEP is nil. Frequency drops 1.5 Hz under this load.
Its EMP proof. There are no electronics inside and the excitation is by slip rings. That control box has some huge wire wound ceramic resistors inside. But it might not survive an A-10 strafing run.
I've gone to water cooled as they are much quieter. Can get them inexpensively from old light towers from the rental outfits. They are similar to a car on fast idle for noise.
Light towers are good, but the trade off is, with air cooled, you don't have to worry about radiator, cooling, etc.. The light towers usually have high hours on them, and the voltage regulation and wave form aren't quite as good, but overall not a bad suggestion
Not that I don’t already have a basement and garage and part of my yard full of Diesel engines in all states of not working to working, pretty much all small ones, but one of these in a navy light tower just came up on marketplace for a decent price so I’m really tempted… if someone else didn’t already grab it!

did you work at the 73rd ave plant in Minneapolis? Not far from where I live. Story about David Onan is fascinating. you can reply to my e mail greencasa at gmail dot com
Rob, my fire department has recently acquired one of these generators on a "new to us" fire truck. Where can I go to get troubleshooting help and pointers?
Hey Rob, what a nice genset, but I'm a bit biased. Engine sounds great to me, especially under load, doesn't seem to be even breaking a sweat, and the exhaust is remarkably clean, a good sign for sure. Those old onans were very conservatively rated, and I would imagine the machine can purr away at full load for days on end. Hope you lose power soon so you can really enjoy the machine! BTW, I pronounce it Onan also, not oh'-nen., not sure which is actually correct.
That's diesel fuel in the fuel can, right? Hopefully with something for added lubricity (the 2007+ low sulfur diesel doesnt' offer the lubricity as the older no.2). I've heard guys using cheap 2 cycle oil with no harm. I personally use some of that ps diesel treatment. Keeps the injectors clean and prevents gelling too.
Could you please give a good source to purchase spare parts and service kits for old ONAN generators? I own a 405DJB and i'd like to refurbish it. Thank you.
I just bought this exact same generator and im having trouble finding any information on this model like a date and other stuff on it any information is appreciated.
Have you checked fuel consumption...if its a quart every hour at 1/2 load....I'll run out and buy one. I looked at one today and by turning the fan by hand it felt like it lacked good compression compared to my lambardini and yamaha diesels.
The bigger the better. Mine had glow plugs, I think I used 1000 cca , but really depends on size of engine, and if you need the glow plugs to get it started.
kmcwhq Actually a lot of parts are still available. you just have to know where to look. the good news is not much goes wrong with them, but you have a valid point. you also have to wonder how many parts are available for some of these newer chinese diesel generators.
Jr Hardy Jr, Yes still have it. If you inbox me your serial# and model, along with an email address, I should be able to get you the info you need. thanks
@@SuperRobkar ok think you this was on a 1980 fire truck and it run when they took out of Service but couple the guy took filter off and was going get new one and never did and two year later who knows.

I tried to find one of these, ended up with a Hatz powered Baldor which seems decent. That Onan is a true beast though!

Incredible amount of load.
My predator labors with 2,000 w load

Thanks Dave, as luck would have it, the power does not go out much since I bought it.

yes, diesel in the can, I also is PS , been using it for years, good stuff!
can you give me any info on. this generator as I just acquired one. I'd like to have wiring schematic, size and amperage rating if possible
smokstak.com - goto onan forum, they have manuals and everything there.
6000 watts 120/240v engine runs fine, i think its the mic on the ipad thats recording is maybe what you hear. i run it about 2 -3 hour a month.
SuperRobkar hi I have one like this one where do you think I can get parts for it
Jerry Desormeaux onanparts.com. Also go on smokstak.com onan subforum create a post looking for what parts u need.
SuperRobkar thank you for the help
Jerry Desormeaux any time. Most parts are still available.
i think bearings have a problem
or maybe i am hearing things, just check the motor and make sure everything is working well
Thats the funny thing about video. This engine is strong runner and sounds great in person
I believe it's Pronounced "Oh-Nen"
Nice Machine!

Clarissa W hi there, .64 gph full load .33 gph half 1/4 load and .43 gph at 1/2 load
hey Rob...thank you....just picked up 6kw onan.....once we get the bugs out will do a light load test to compare. Are you using synthetic oils?
Hey I have a very similar 6.5 diesel im trying to get going..any information would help how many CCA does it take to crank it over

What Diesel engine did they use on them? Their own, or someone else's?
Their own
I have an Onan Emerald Plus 4000. Experiencing low power in my RV after attempting to operated 2- 1500 watt heaters. Can anyone help?
I almost put mine up for sale until I found out the fuel consumption. Anyone try running black diesel in one?
Diesel or gasoline sir?
What the amp rating?
What number on the two fuel filter?
Did you find your fuel filter numbers…?
I think I saw Fran p1115 or 1116….?
The bad thing is that spare parts are probably non existent for these at this point. If you need a major repair part you are SOL.

SuperRobkar Gaskets Rings and Bearings?
one can go directly to cummins for parts, and pay a hefty price or other sources such as onanparts.com.
Cool
Not really, most parts can be easily modified and the engine is pretty bulletproof.
quiero saberdel modulo del generador de 12
Try running it on veggie oil
do you still have this unit I have one no schematic any help would be appreciated thanks

What are the specs?
Surge watts average 1500-2000 watts above run rating watts
not on this bad boy. 18,000 is the surge rating. Imagine that.
Just bought a 6.0 DJE. Where did you find the 18,000 surge rating?
Is it for sale?
+Phil Schuyler ,I would sell it if a real offer was given.

And oil filter number plz I have same one
google smokstak onan, they should have a manual there for you. The pat numbers will be in there. Some posts even show cross over part #'s
