Beginners guide to starting the Douglas DC-3 from cold and dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • The Douglas DC-3 "Dakota" has arrived in Microsoft Flight Simulator as part of the 40th Anniversary update, and it's wonderful! In this video I walk through firing the plane up from cold and dark and take it for a quick circuit. Apologies in advance for the lack-of-talent displayed in landing it, where I almost get into a ground loop. Postscript - a real DC3 pilot got in touch with me and helped me revise the startup procedure - the checklist within the aircraft is **wrong**.
Here's where you can find the checklist:

Every time when I try to take off in a twin engine plane, I yaw off to the left or right and can't ever take off normally. I would like to learn how to properly take off with a bigger plane than a single engine. Do you have a video on taking off with these bigger twin engine planes?

Thank you for doing this. I know everyone is raving about the Airbus A310 but I personally think this is such a great aircraft and it is lovely to see such care and attention taken for this aircraft. I have been lucky enough to fly on one of these out of the Bahamas in the 70's. For me this is THE aircraft in this update.

      Everyone loves a DC-3.
A310 is only hyped because there is so little airliners currently available especially on xbox.
Although I had some fun with it at night with the first start up.
Everything is pitch black can't see a thing, probably took me 20 minutes of scrolling over various buttons and switches to get her lit up and started.
Went on the tablet and I have no idea what I'm doing with that, but I hit cold start thinking it was a check list and ended up killing everything back to pitch black.
Needless to say I was no longer human, had a darkness come over me that I think if any human tried to approach me it would have been a bad day. Bloody thing. 😂

That dancing of the DC3 is exactly what you feel in real life. I grew up as a kid in Africa in the 70s and we used to fly a lot with a DC3. (hardly any roads there)
Recently I was fortunately enough to take a DC3 flight again. Low flight around 5000 ft. The plane is sluggish and the turbulence almost feels like a very gentle ride in a slow motion rollercoaster. I think the enormous wing surface also adds to the experience when looking outside. And the sound of those engines!
    This plane is so beautiful.

Going through the speed range, the aircraft either noses up or noses down quite a lot... upto 80 mph, it'll want to nose up, above that it'll nose down on you (on throttle open fully). This happens with flaps and gear up as well. As you try and control it with the throttle, under 90mph, you'll have throttle control over the pitch quite a lot, over 90, it'll only nose down on you. This all with pitch neutral. ;)

Landing these aircraft is never going to be easy. I think in the real thing they keep the tail wheel off the ground as long as possible. This "first landing" with the DC3 was not my finest hour :) I wouldn't change any sensitivity settings - it's far better to just get used to how the plane behaves. To be honest I should have done a go-around. If landed *properly* the ground loop I almost got into wouldn't have even started to happen.

I have 1,600 hours flying the DC3 with Pratt & Cyclone Engines & starting Radial Engines is an Art form.
Starting - unless you want a big chance of a fire & possible damage from Hydraulicing, do NOT put the mixtures to Rich OR turn the Mags on!
You must turn each engine over 9 to 11 blades before MAG on & after Engine firing on prime, Mixture to Auto Rich.
I only just got the update & the Cockpit looks great a far more modern than what we had.
On the ground independent engine & brakes plus knowing when to use the Tail Wheel Lock takes time to learn - once airborne the DC3 is a big heavy Cessna & a pleasure to fly .
BTW on 2 Engines it used (Imperial) 74 Gallons an hour at 140 kts & on 110 Gallons & hour at 110 kts! ( DOUBLE the fuel per mile).

Hello Jonathan! I’ve been trying to find where to release the parking brakes on the DC-3. Where is it located. You mentioned in the video that you released the parking brakes but did not show where it is located. I’ve been flying the PMDG 737 and use the upper part of the rudder pedals to release the parking breaks, but this does not seem to work with the DC-3. The video is fantastic and thanks again!

It's a red knob hidden underneath the throttle quadrant. It's really difficult to reach without changing the camera view, and fiddly as hell in VR. I'm convinced the throttle quadrant has been modelled slightly too large, as it shouldn't totally obscure the trim controls that are also near the parking brake control.

Fly down to the runway keeping abit of power in, hold back pressure on your stick and stabilise the AC then fly it onto the runway. • @MegaPeedee
      @MegaPeedee Рік тому +1

I very much agree. What a waste of space. We surely have had enough of oddities and ugliness in flight simulation and although some people think these things are cool it could only be a small minority (as opposed to a large minority). As we have probably seen in the past these odd-ball aircraft would have been flown once or twice and forgotten thereafter (it was certainly the case with me). Asobo/Microsoft should spend their time on producing what customers actually want - not what the team wants. This makes good business sense, and businesses that don't focus on the needs of the customer will suffer accordingly ... in the hip pocket. I am not saying that Asobo will go to the wall over such things because that would be silly, but Asobo should get their heads around the fact that flight simulator users want more attention paid to what is good, not what is less than worthy additions to the genre. As flight sim enthusiasts we should reinforce the idea in the minds of the developers that we are a serious bunch who take our sim flying seriously and that we don't (or shouldn't) treat it like a game - and neither should they. If we aim low we will get "low" ... if we aim high we will at least get something decent and more suitable to our hobby.
