This is really hard to share, but being a Vietnamese kid, "doing" my times hunting down Iain's Shadowline book for 3 years, looking through every single drawing of his on Google, and religiously watching his lectures and talks on UA-cam since my secondary school, I honestly cried when getting to hear his voice of warmth, enthusiasm and passion in this sketchbook series. Most sincere thank-yous to the THU team for making this available for free. I'll find a way to meet up with Iain one day.
I was lucky enough to get to see him and his daughter speak in the lecture hall at Lightbox Expo 2019, and then later in the much smaller panel at the same expo. His enthusiasm and energy is boundless and I could listen to him speak all day. Such a fun guy! We were all drawing along with him in the panel, and he was running around the room praising this person's hair, that person's nose, the way that guy was sitting....he pulls from everywhere and though his knowledge and skills are incredible, I think his sheer enthusiasm and love for the art make him one of the most fun and inspiring artists out there. This video was a great reminder of that amazing experience!
One of if not the greatest artists of our times. I feel so honored and privileged to be part of this artistic community where Iain is present and if you've ever talked to him he's the most present person i've ever had a conversation with. Well done THU much love from a Tribe member !
This made me cry. I need a healing. And this one is a part of it. I thank God for letting me know an artist like Iain. I'm hearing about him for a long time, but I believe this is the first time I had the time to look for him in the internet. And man. I thank God for this man. May God bless him. ♥️
8:10 When he said he collect the pencils. I thought I was so weird doing that because I collect my pencils until the end. it pains me to throw them away, I mean they share with me so much, and I’ve been collecting them in a jar but I always had a little voice in my head telling me, what am I doing! This is not a normal behavior but now listening to him that he’s does the same thing it’s kind of a relief for my mental health. 😝
I don't think it's weird. Lots of people do that we just don't talk about it. Some people hold on to used pencils, others keep books they already read, or there is a stash of cookie cutters, whatever it is, they become your own diary. You become attached to them because it's something that has meaning to you. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks because it's very specific to each person and your own experience.
I have a mechanical pencil that has a crushed metal cap and plastic body that someone gave me because it had jammed and they were going to throw it away. That pencil is cheap & I don't use it much anymore, but I would never even consider getting rid of it. Not because of who gave it to me, but because of how much I have created with it. (Oh, yeah I forgot to mention, it's been almost 35 years since my pencil and I began our journey together. )
One of the greatest episodes ever produced. I can't even tell you how often I watch this one when I'm trying to break out of a creative rut. Iain McCaig is a treasure.
The energy is contagious. I planned to watch this, and then I had to pick up my sketchbook and sketch, and now I can only listen and I'll have to rewatch this to see the drawings!
McCaig is right, those* rubbers really act like stress balls, I've joined a couple of these and now I cannot draw without squeezing that grey mass like a maniac.
um new to drawing, but i get the feeling everything he speaks about is what artists go through, because i make music and know the feelings he's talking about. When you enter that space when things take over and the art starts to make itself, not even concentrating, but the body suddenly knows what do and when the work is finished. the feeling for me is still rare, but beautiful when it happens.
i am so touched ! I am just sitting and crying, there is no such great and full of energy people near me ,so i will become this kind of person.Thank you Iain for all your art and incredible thoughts!
I usually listen to the interviews like this whenever I draw cuz it motivates me a lot and you just relax and don't care about whether your drawings are good or not
What a delightful person to interview. So full of enthusiasm and smiling. Thank you people that produce this channel for this so great moments with artists we can relate to in various ways. 💜
I just love him...he is an awesome artist and just so inspiring. Its like watching a magician or just someone who is so deep in his art. I can't express my feelings in the words. I was smiling through out the interview. Thank you THU for this awesome interview..:)
i want to be as happy, free and at peace as Ian McCaig... it's so tough to not let your art become a job when you have to work for money, i want to enjoy doing art like he does, i know i am capable.
I couldn't quite put my finger on who he reminded me of, and I just realized his smile and soft way of speaking reminds me of my gym teacher. She's super sweet and one of the most gentle yet lively people I know. It makes watching the video a bit cooler.
Honestly as an artist I will watch him when my confidence waivers... he brings you back to the fun of being an artist and what it’s truly all about and his voice is so soothing and comforting...
10:20 resonates with me a lot i remember since i was a kid i used to imitate the expression of whatever character i was drawing, i think it's something about feeling your own face helps you understand what should happen in their faces as well, it's like using yourself as a reference
I enjoyed every single video of this series but this one is special his personality and enthusiasm is amazing, I hope you do Ilya Kushinov next would love to see his sketchbook!
If I ever have a child, I hope they're as into art as I am. My mother used to draw a lot but she lost interest over time, but she supports me a lot with it. Just the idea that this guy took her sketchbook and added his own drawings in to work with hers? I hope doing that wouldn't be seen as rude if I did that with my child, I'd love to share a passion like that and make art together haha. I might see if I can start sneaking my friends' sketchbook away and adding little things in here and there for him hehe
18:12 i've been struggling to hold a pencil for awhile now because my dip joints concave and after all this years it starting to take a toll, I have the same grip but different/default pencil position. I tried to switch hand position but it just doesn't feel right.. but this .. this is something i really needed. Now I just wish digital pen isnt girthy.

This is me today, in the hunt for shadowline.
damnn sounds intense, I hope to you!
What is that shadowline
It’s Iain’s “art of” book that’s written around an original story of his. It’s beautiful and one of my most treasured art books!
And..where's your art located at?
I just love his enthusiasm and personality.
Even at his age he is really nice 😊
His energy is sooo awesome !!!
I love how it seems like every artist has a weird metaphor for their sketchbooks😂

Echo Crawford I was there too! Definitely my favourite panel at the event.
He sounds like a calm Ryan reynold
That's what I thought too
He kind of looks like Matthew McConaughey
*oh my god he does*
HE DOES THO
Mind blown
I love when sketchbooks actually look like sketches!
Same
lol what? When do they EVER don't? They mostly all do for the most part.
"Your sketchbook is like a little snapshot of your soul and you don't wanna sell your soul."
*groan*
@@MacSmithVideo groan @ your groan
@@alfiemarshall9224 you can't do that!
@@MacSmithVideo Yeah i'm kinda with you on that, sounds kinda basic bitch :P
Too bad most artist are willing to sell their soul.
Shows what kind of person they are as an artist.
He seems so nice, so human, so calm and at the same time a bit crazy ! I love his sketchbooks
If you're not making sound effects when you're drawing then is your heart really into it?
True that
So true
Exactly lol 😂
He should be a voice over artist. His voice modulation is so captivating.
Who knew Iain McCaig would kinda sound like Ryan Reynolds or if Ryan Reynolds and Bob Ross had a baby.
Anyhoo, love his work!
Apo Kyra that’s Exactly what I was thinking! Like a super zen Deadpool
now I can't unhear it
Bruh exactly what i thought man
I can't unhear it LOL
I had the privilege of seeing Iain in Melbourne around 10 years ago and he was very inspirational. Great to see he still has that positive energy.

Such joy to hear Iain McCaig talking, his like a child, and it really takes the weight of drawing and really enjoy and have fun.
That last bit of sketchbooks being treasure and how we eventually have to let them go, actually made me tear up man. That was beautiful. Thank you THU

I loved the story he narrated too...about hanging on to them.like soldiers of war....phew ...thankfully it made me realise I'm normal too 😂
Dama Chan all artist are hoarders.
@@mslightbulb not really, that's a misinterpretation in movies but in real life most of them are well organized.
This guy is so fcking cool. Will we see Karla Ortiz and Alberto Mielgo's sketchbooks in this too?

Wow, listening Iain talk about sketching sounds like learning about life itself. Beautiful!
McCaig is right, those* rubbers really act like stress balls, I've joined a couple of these and now I cannot draw without squeezing that grey mass like a maniac.
I’m happy to know I’m not the only one. I also like to smooth the little folds that it makes.
It's absolutely mind-blowing,the way he so easily speaks out loud so many things that I have felt so many times but could not put into words.
I'll be naming my pencils after this. Such an inspiring artist and human being!
I just watched this video for the third or fourth time. I love this guy, his whole outlook on life is so great.
This felt like an ASMR, really enjoyed it while sketching in my book. Great Interview too.
As an artist, I needed to see this!! Thank you so much for posting this! 😊😊😊

The best UA-cam series, thanks for the amazing content

Iain sharing that he names his pencils and keeps the nubs in jars was powerfully cool! The man never ceases to amaze me!
what a fascinating person. a joy to watch and listen to.
This is absolute gold. Thank you for making these!
Such an amazing artist. I’ve learned a lot from just him speaking about art wisdom and his journey as an artist.
True genuine passion pours out of him that’s how you know he truly loves his craft
McCaig is easily the most entertaining artist to be hosted on this channel.
I like how he's chill and excited at the same time
Oh wow this is amazing :) Iain McCaig is one of my all time favourite artists
I love how you can hear the interviewer giggling and laughing in the background. Such a wonderful interview.
I love his drawing. what is the kind of pencil he use? Thanks

Man I’m so happy I found him 🖤🖤this guy is so amazing from the way he talks and just his attitude is wonderful 🖤
Falling in love with each artist !!!!
I think him and Jeremy Mann had the most amazing personalities in this series
Agree! McCaig, Mann and Kalvachev are super cool and unique dudes
Damn. I need to remember to come back and watch this whenever I need motivation to draw.
What a great guy and artist, I enjoy a lot of the people you have on this series thank you
Ian's sound is fantastic
Such charisma...
i could listen to Iain McCaig all day long.
I love Palomino blackwing. I also love any 2h or 3h to create searching lines.
9:10 2 pencils one doesn’t smear or smudge and both can go light and really dark
7:37 tombow 4b smudges
Palamino black wing 4b doesn’t
I really love this Series, keep going 😎
You should interview Miles Johnston next. 😃 I love these videos!
I love this series. Thank you for sharing.
This was an absolute delight. Thank you!
I love this guy 💗
This is glorious in every way. Really makes me want to draw draw draw!
just beautiful.
Loved his work on The Phantom Menace.
1:07 that was damn funny! Using a child to represent his drawings haha!
That was like a meditation in itself, so calming.
This guy is so down to earth and happy. Love him!

Get an apple pencil.
His words from 21:25 really resonated with me.
CAN THIS BE 6 HOURS PLEASE
Please tell him the hairy thing you can eat that he drew is called a rambutan, such a great guy 😁
So much enthusiasm for his craft!
what a beautiful artist
His voice is definitely ASMR-ish
Phew! I'm not the only one doing sound fx of my lines when i draw :D
Alan Lee or John Howe would be super cool!!!!
It's so sad that I will never reach the amount of enjoyment this guy has with doing art. He really does *love* what he does, and I'm miserable.
How do you know you won’t!?
I watch this every few weeks
He's an interesting man. With a great happy smile.
This just made my day, thank you so much!
Looks great @58
This was lovely
Super nice job keep it up👍😊😊

This man would make a wonderful writer.
This just makes me so freaking happy.
This man is a gift.

IAIN MCCAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. THANK YOU FOR THIS
“Thats why artists are chill people” said the weirdest man I’ve ever seen
Anyway I love his art so much and I relate to every bit he said
