This guy gave TF2 its timeless look.
And also Valorant, he's god walking amongst ants ! I mean im a huge fan of what he did to the game industry art wise!
@@romiokasuga Hes also responsible for Dota 2 and half life
@@gjorne-4529 HL1 was chuck jones and ted backman, he did some work on HL2 amd CSS but TF2 is where he really shined
Apologies, it’s not a 12 value scale. It’s 11. My bad.
always good just to see you painting buddy!
erik Jacobsen hi Erik!!
@@mobyfrancke1241 Hope youre well, so good to see you pop on my you tube feed.
Thank you for all the work you've done for team fortress 2.
Thanks Vanilla. It’s was a pleasure to work with so many talented devs to make TF2. Takes a village to raise a child..:)
could they zoom in on his face some more? it's not like i'm here to watch him sketch or anything
Moby: *splashes water -> make nice art*
me: *splashes water-> soggy paper*
@Insane Wolf lol. You should try inking with brush. ;)
Change paper ....take one for wtrclrs.
The cheapest watercolor paper that you can practice with is canson where I live a pad is 5 dollars and it should be able to take enough water to learn
why is this soo true
I have a theory:
Watercolors are actually magical, and you only get to work with them if you tell them you like them. It's kind of like when peter pan said he didn't believe in fairies and tinkerbell would lose her powers? Same thing. I don't like watercolors, they don't work. My friend loves them, they work.
I've no way to proof this, but I also have no doubts
Moby Francke is such an inspiration, not because of his awesome artistic abilities, but because of his openness and attitude towards art and life!
I really appreciate what you guys do, and I know this has been stated a 100 times before but please let us see more of what the artist is doing rather than randomly transitioning to artsy Camera angles that contribute nothing like the back end of the brush. It just feels frustrating.
Seriously! Did they film this with 27 freaking cameras?
there is a such thing as overworking your artwork. apparently the same thing exists when it comes to camera transitions 😂
1000000% agree
I mean it's really beautiful but it's what most people are looking for when watching this
"I feel depressed after finishing a painting. I feel happy that I did it but I don't think I can do it again." I used to think this too but we only have to paint a painting ONCE, we don't have to do that same painting again and since we know how to use the tools we just need to keep creating, not try to recreate something we already did. As fine artists we are probably the freest of all artists because we only need to make one awesome painting of its kind, the rest are supposed to be different and unique and we don't have to worry about doing it again.
For me, as a comic book illustrator mostly, I find when I'm drawing for myself I often feel confused at whether it was me who drew this picture or if it is some fluke that I could never replicate. This has always plagued me because I always felt like what if all the time I spend learning about anatomy and good character design was for naught and all I can really do is get lucky. So when I was 15 I started making a point to throw away any nonessential art, "If I can't draw it again I didn't draw it in the first place", that's what works for me at least. But I guess why I just make comics, I like drawing the same thing over and over, but that's just me.
@@Maclennon that first part...is me when I finish a painting that I like. "How did I do that?"is literally a question I ask myself when looking at my own painting! I guess it's a common thing amongst artists and I'm glad you said it, now I know I'm not alone. Anyway I don't like drawing the exact same drawing over and over, hence me not getting two jobs in animation. I don't like drawing on model, I don't like drawing super clean or "finished" like a lot of people like to say. I like loose and free drawing with construction lines everywhere. I love seeing the process and that's something I learned while trying to get animation jobs. I thought they wanted to see clean drawings so I would erase the construction lines thinking it's what you're supposed to do but layout artists are supposed to leave them in. I'm an overthinker so if I have to clean up a drawing I tense up and it's no longer fun for me and the drawings look stiff and plain to me. If I worked in comics I'd have to do pencils only and someone else would have to clean it up. I appreciate and respect comic artists and photo realistic artists but it's not for me lol.
@@Maclennon Insightful. I feel the exact same way. This gnawing feeling that I'll never be able to make another drawing that well done again and I've lost all skill because I got lucky before. Thanks for sharing.
I get what he's saying, Being obsessive is one thing and it can be a great gift but having OCD is a completely different thing, the obsession is often irrational like gambling with the universe and you aren't in control of it. I know people use it casually this days and I am not offended or anything, just a topical comment in the comment section
He means people have a striving desire to create beautiful art, and if it does not meet the standards of beauty, they redo it again.
omg i learned so much from this dude, about myself as an artist and about other artists, so much in such a small amount of time. he might turn into my next favourite contemporary artist, loved how his mind works and how freely he uses his sketchbook. Really appreciate this, thanks x
Amazing series! Thank you so much putting so much effort into these productions. They are perfect.
I find it so crazy to find that this just came out today. I have spent the last 2 weeks replaying both Half Life 1 and 2, and yesterday was my birthday. I spent all morning yesterday looking at what I could find of Moby Francke’s art. Came onto YT today and saw this here. Thank you for doing this Mr. Francke!
He actually cleans his brush like Bob Ross
Beat the devil out of it
@gheddi he has talent lmao
He literally said...titanium white and some other Bob Ross quote keywords lmao
Serious art crush
Awesome seeing somone sketch with gouache, now please get James Gurney on this!
That would be the BEST thing!
Yes James would be awesome
Heck yeah would be awesome with James
YYYYEEESSS! Make it happen. I'm pretty sure who wouldn't mind!
Oh goodness yes yes yessss!!
That´s awesome, Moby is a fantastic artist and I love the talk and the video
I like to learn about artists, how they talk, how the interact with fans, etc. And I've found out that the artists I admire, and whose art I enjoy are always very dreamy, and talk about art as a journey, as something they look up to doing... like going to the beach, or sliding down a slide when you're a kid... I just discovered Moby, I'm 100% going to delve deeper into his art.
I love these videos so much
This is why I'm always so into actually starting with heavy linework. I love solid linework. I guess that's why I like drawing with a pen so that way I basically have to live with whatever it is that I draw. No erasing.
This guy is super chill. I like that thanks for sharing. Much love 💥✌️
i got aneurysm watching this cos of the unnecessary camera angles smh
But.. did you think they had enough angles in this vid though? 🤔
Interesting guy with a really interesting perspective. And hugely talented. Really enjoyed this one
Wow, he really in love with art.
whoah did not expect to see the tf2 concept art artist! Honestly a blessing
His clumsiness is prolly why he's a cool artist.
His clumsiness is a representation of his openness and willingness to try new things. There's a reason why the video games with his art direction are so striking and memorable.
I love this format
9:39 Miyazaki-san uses Holbein watercolors.
yes! Always wanted a set from the ghibli museum. Just to add to this, for backgrounds they‘ll use Nicker Poster Colors.
This was the most informative so far for my drawing
Thank you for the inspiration :)
This guy was really fun
I understand what he was trying to say, but I hope Mr. Francke understands that being obsessed about something, being focused, and being driven are different than having actual OCD. Having actual Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can be, and is often, debilitating.
Obviously we say "OCD" as shorthand. But I suppose he should have said "intense focus" instead.
I should not have said OCD, my apologies.
You people make a big deal out of everything holy shit
Yeah, it's oxymoronic. One is a production set of traits while OCD is just dysfunctional.
Most people know at least one person who has OCD so we can see he's not someone that shows signs of high neurotic traits. He actually seems likeable.
@@yoyolol22 when ocd makes you wash your hands until they bleed uncontrollably because there's barely any skin left, that is kind of a big deal, trust me.
loved this!!
Loved his work on TF2.
What is the list of supplies he used;
The way he draws is so good in the rhythm of flow down to his technique and advice
This video is incredibly inspirational
Please, DON'T stop doing this the way you do it. There are plenty of art videos with the same camera angle showing the process. This is a very refreshing and new approach, it's like being right there in the conversation. I think people haven't gotten to appreciate that yet.
that's all I was thinking about it while i watch. Such a good conversation, his points was so interesting, he talks really well etc
I wasn't really worried about the sketch.
I see this series as not focus on the process or the technique, but on the artist thoughts
I share the same feeling like him about opening the sketchbook the next day and to be egar to impress myself!
Yup. Gouache is kinda a pain. When I was in the textile design field and really had to be exact as possible in color matching I never knew if I was close or way the F off. I'd use a hairdryer to expedite the drying to see where i was. Never does it dry the way you think it will. But, I actually like the medium. This was a wonderful vid. Enjoyed it immensely. Your commentary was key. Thanks!
Very Inspiring, Real badass coming alive.
Beautiful video. Gives me a lot of inspiration for my channel.
The balance of originality and accidental influence
I could watch this “behind the studio” forever 🎨🍷🌬
I saw his drawing and was like, "looks like.. .sniper from-- hang on" *googles name* "I KNEW IT THIS IS THE ARTIST FROM TF2 WTF"
Get James Gurney to explain and do demos, he is the master of the game!
I love this guy!!!!
please get James Gurney on this!

Amazing learning something new thank you for sharing ..I’m bringing out my drawings to on my UA-cam channel .. is soo amazing 😉
I’ve totally understand the postpartum after finishing a painting or drawing. After finishing a commission that was in the works for a few months I went into a funk/plateau and I absolutely could not produce any work worthwhile in my eyes for about a month or so. I still drew of course but I couldn’t seem to move onto another project. But, I’m finally bouncing back and boning up on my skills. The depression he talks about in the vid ain’t a joke lol
I wish you could get Chris Hong to do an episode.
Nice work
He got great personality.
This without the background giggles 💯🔥
"Awww.. Shet up and drawr!" -
Yosemite Sam
Loved this "session"! Very friendly and curiously asking: what's with the giggles? I guess the unedited version could only tell, but it reminded me of my teenage self when being flirty... 😂😅
Rightt!!! She was flirtin
@@hyerrrvawesome6744 idk she laughs with all the artists. Just sounds to me like she's doing out of politeness or something
The best!!!!
He feels warm
when he said Lamp Black, I felt that
I now wanna see a Moby Francke Hellboy...
someone has a crush on somebody lool... so much giggling lol!
She's like this with everyone.
@@gregorycomey Perhaps. The way I hear it, there are different types of laughter, what I hear especially in this vid is very genuine, filled with admiration and attraction.
@@reficul9995 Just watch literally any other video in this channel, she is like this with every single guest
What a great camera shooting!!! I always satisfied with videos from this channel. Focusing on artist face reflected his or her inner self. I Love this.
Do we have to have extreme close-ups of Moby's face like that
Love these man, I'm curious is there any plans for more POC artist? Also what is the sharpener he is using for his pencil? I have one of those mechanical pencils and when I saw that I was like "I NEED IT" =P
Rob the LimeGrenade It’s called a Lead Pointer, you can get them in art shops, even online at Amazon🙂
What POC artist do you have in mind? it might help if you make a suggestion
Do you know what pencil he’s using?
@@jessierivera4802 It's called a clutch pencil =).
@@nathankable4507 I never thought to make a suggestion, honestly lol. One artist that comes to mind is Anthony Jones (@robotpencil), I love to see his thoughts on sketching and sketchbooks.
Great demo lessened by unrelated giggling in the background.
Ikr???? It's SO irritating.
He's also giggling 🤔 and he's also being incredibly charming so his bubbly energy is creating this response. So it isn't unrelated since it is in response to his behavior.
Show us his drawing, not his face! Pleeeeeeease!
Yeah the camerawork makes me dizzy
Nen Chang would be nice for this project
What brushes does the Myazaki Ghibli studio use again?
Bro he looks so animated
love the new film cuts, but can you do less it gives me anxiety!
I wonder if you guys will ever get Alex Ross on this show
Whats the Graphite pencil he uses while sketching? Graphite "column" thing?
Just a mechanical pencil you can buy them at any stationary shop.
2 mm lead holder with HB lead
nice structure
When I saw the thumbnail I thought, "Wow this guy's art looks like Team Fortress 2." And then I see the description and realize he made the concept art for TF2 lol
The giggling in the background made it for me 😉
Can anyone tell me what is the name or type of mechanical pencil he is using at the beginning?? As well as the sharpener?? Thanks in advance!!
Staedtler mars 2mm lead holder and Staedtler 2mm lead pointer
@@fronandough7 Ahhh… Thanks!
@@fronandough7 i was thinking the same but its not. But very close design to Mars technico. I'm curious too, if you discover name just tell us here.
As Andrew Wray mentioned here earlier.. it is Prismacolor Turquoise Lead Holder. Sharpener? Not sure if its Staedtler.
I’m just curious to know why are they releasing these videos only now? The ones I watched are from 2015-2017 I’m just curious
does anyone know what brand of pencil he's using here?
Give Moby Francke some credit and give him the spotlight, you don't have to keep mentioning James Gurney under a content directly related to him. disrespectful
Awesome awesome awesome, NOW PLS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET JAMES GURNEY!!
does anyone have any idea what sketchbook that is? thanks!! x
Plz invite James jean next❤️
Someone please tell me where i can get that pencil!!
Any art supply store I am sure has that. Just Google it for your area.
Could it be that there sometimes is this one girl that just laughs at everything?
that's karla ortiz! she also has her own sketchbook video
@@lucak_art ah thanks
Did she really giggle thru the whole thing?
Why is the Kim Jung GI one of these set to private?
Man evn i too was searching for his video .Read somewhere that they did coz of his nude art and people were getting offended and were whining about it.
He describes a rape and murder fantasy in the video. I think they just wanted to avoid controversy.
@@DanCastelli78 That's a shame.
Daniel Castelli damn thats crazy, i didnt think hed be the type of dude, super disappointing

Does anyone know what kind of mechanical pencil he uses in this???
Literally the only reason I can't watch these videos because of the giggling. It can be endearing and it's not a bad laugh but he literally said that his sketchbook was lying in his drawer and the girl giggled. Why??
Ahh the elusive Moby Franke can't find any of his official website
Note to the girl: stop giggle flirting it’s a fucking interview
badass bunnies: Bugs, Usagi …
What type of pencil is that? I can’t find it anywhere??
Can anyone give me a link to a pencil like his please
I love how every shot of the actual drawings is out of focus and blurry
Great to see him work, BUT TONE DOWN ON THE CUTS TO UNNECESSARY ANGLES PLEASE hahaha my head hurts. Would rather see his face and his art process
probably because his "analog" sketching sucks and he has to talk to make up for it. The minute he said "analog" sketching I knew this video was going to lack substance.
What pencil is he using?
anybody know what that pencil he used is? :)
add shipping to mexico pls
Am I the only one who thinks he is Robert Downey Jr.'s lost brother?
