Ok, riding through water was a challenge, Pete warned us about dropping the bike in the water saying it would wreck the trip so we were super nervous about doing it. Also a very new experience for us Harley riders!! And the soft sand just grabs the wheels, takes a while to get comfortable with the feeling! Hope you enjoyed the video. Great video! I think it was great that you guys did a bunch of practice riding to get used to off-road bikes and conditions. The problem with going through water, especially if can’t see the bottom, is that you don’t know what you’re riding over. Just love your content, editing and of course the way you guys are interacting! Your casual personalities are so inviting and make your videos such a pleasure to watch!
Yeah we were very grateful, although the track was worse than anything we experienced out in the road but it gave us confidence when we left for the wild voast

The bike is obviously too big and powerful for Caroline. The most interesting thing of this series, so far, is seeing Caroline out of her element. She seems so confident in England and throughout Europe. In Africa she almost seems distressed. The guide is top rate.
It was a completely new experience for both of us. The only issue she had was the height of the bike, her last adventure bike ride was the Pan America and we all know how that ended.

Love the honest video about two tarmac-rides going off-road (on purpose😜) I didn't know it would be that hard. You guys made me want it to try myself. I remember the first time i rode my GL1100 after I succeeded my exams. My buddy took a right turn off the tarmac onto a gravel path. I had never driven on one so I really called him some nasty things at first. But after a few meters I could keep the bike on the throttle and the slip and sliding was great fun to do. And you're right: you have to learn to thrust the bike. It's mostly more capable of things than you'll ever know. You made me very curious for the next episode. (learning some new words we never got taught at school😅😅)

There is a reason Noraly (itchi boots) with all her experience , is chosing a 350 to 500 cc bike. I realy admire Carolynes spirit.
Its a top heavy bike which was difficult to lift. We should try some smaller bikes, this bike the height was the biggest issue
Savanna has a 250cc and Alaska has a 300cc engine. Her Ducati was a about liter bike, and that is a 1000.
ADV Ducaty, I believe it was a 1200 or a 1000cc.
So she don’t only ride small bikes.

As long as you don’t Cary the bike on your back, pushing the bike. The weight of the bike don’t make much difference.

You need to control the 'adrenaline rush' as much as possible, as adrenaline is used by the body for quick bursts of energy and pain relief. If you have a rush of adrenaline then get the shakes it's because you have burnt off the available energy in your muscles and they will then be weaker. At that point stop have a rest drink water or electrolytes and eat something if possible, after 20 minutes or so you should be good to go.
I know, needed to stop and have a breather. Not so much what we were doing we just didn’t want to damage the bikes

Trial and error , just do it over and over till it's muscle memory ! I learnt to ride dirt at 12 on a Honda 125 , an older cousin taught me , he said throttle steady you stay up throttle jerky you go down , I did get wet a few times !
Was such a new experience riding in the sand and mud, very different to the harleys
When you drown a motorcycle, it means that where that nice compressible air is supposed to go to get into your cylinder, you instead got pretty much uncompressible water in there.
The piston goes down and sucks the cylinder full of water that came into your airbox and was sucked through your intake valve into the cylinder.
Then the intake valve closes, and your piston tries to come up on its compression stroke, but its water and not air and the engine violently stops. But your other cylinder hasn't sucked water yet and it's trying to fire and move that piston through the water. And your momentum is also trying to turn the engine over (move that piston).
If you are lucky, the top of the engine (cylinder head) doesn't get blown off. If you are lucky, you don't break or slip the timing chain (chain or belt that makes sure the valves open and close at the right times). If you are lucky, you don't break or bend a connecting rod (what connects the piston to the crankshaft and piston bearings).
You probably have forced some water past the rings (things that compress around the piston so it can go up and down inside the cylinder) and contaminated your oil with water.
And you probably have hydro locked the engine (where the piston cannot go up nor down because of that damned uncompressible water) if the head is still intact.
So you drag the motorcycle out of the water, remove the spark plugs, remove the air filter, tip the bike over on both sides to try to get as much water out of the air box, exhaust and motor as you can, then you crank the motor (if the battery and fuses are still intact from being submerged) a bit, put the new paper air filter (it might not tear, but you are trying to suck air through a wet paper bag) or squeeze out and if you can, oil, the foam air filter, put the plugs back in (if you have no other way to get home) and start the motorcycle.
You'd prefer to NOT run or even crank the motorcycle because you cannot see if the head gasket is leaking until it starts running and it may be leaking coolant INTO the cylinder. You'll know if it's coming OUT of the cylinder, but in, means you are burning coolant and contaminating your oil more and when you run out of coolant, the engine will overheat. If anything got bent, the engine will knock like hell. If your timing belt/chain broke, the bike won't run. If it slipped (or jumped some teeth) you may bend or break a valve when it opens at the wrong time, or damage your piston, when the two slam into each other, and you may the damage the head as well, if it wasn't already.
So, drowning a motorcycle probably means you aren't riding it for a while, while it gets checked.
if the motorcycle starts to drop, or fall over, or the water gets too deep, YOU MUST TURN OFF THE MOTORCYCLE (kill switch is fastest) IMMEDIATELY, so you don't suck water into the motor, which is where this long-winded comment started at.
IF you kill the engine BEFORE the bike drops, it can be pushed out of the water, you can have your filter fun, remove the plugs, and crank the bike to blow the water out of the exhaust.
Water crossing.
Commit.
Constant speed.
Use the kill switch if the bike is going to fall or the water is higher than the top of your engine.
We usually walk a water crossing first, and bring things that don't like getting wet, like cell phones and such, with us, so we know where a log or big rock or big hole are.
We will station people at tricky parts, to try to help if the rider runs into problems. The person on the right side of the motorcycle will try to hit that kill switch, if the rider doesn't.
It is fun! Most, when the motorcycle is starting to fall, will stall the motorcycle, which is actually a good move if the motorcycle is going to go under.
never seen hydro locking a bike engine blow the top......and i've drowned bikes more than once😆 there simply isn't enough inertia in the cylinders to get the required pressure to blow the cylinder head.......

Love your channel and all the great fun your having. Although I commend you for trying the offroad bikes I really think that bike is way above what Caroline should be riding. I know anyone could ride that bike down the road, but handling it offroad is a different story. If she was to ride a lighter bike like a honda 300 she would have been able to control it and enjoy it instead of being nervous. Personally i feel if you cannot pick up an offroad bike yourself you are asking for trouble. The trend is lighter weight adv bikes for this reason. I mean I could ride a goldwing through that puddle but why would I?

Try using the power that’s at your wrist , when in sand give it gas so the front end rises up lightly . Use the bike it’s not just for sitting on and riding. I would of put you on a dirtbike for a few weeks .

The 790 is a lot of bike to learn on in sand,water,rough terrain to be honest. Most of us learned on mini bikes as kids progressed to 125,250 etc eventually we got street bikes and then harleys. You guys are learning it reverse order and while im laughing i truly admire you for both giving it a go. ive wrecked,been wrecked so many times racing and riding i cant even begin to remember the amount of times. Ive broken both arms just one leg,nearly castrated myself 😂 and i call myself an expert.😂😂 i truly hope you guys had the time of you're life and going forward for at least you carol you get on a little enduro thats light,low,underpowered 😂 and get to just ride without any worries.little honda,yamaha 125,150,200 would be perfect for single track or putting around on in the country side.
They are really fun bikes and great to ride. It was just the height that was the issue and we didn’t want to damage Uncle Pete’s bikes

Carolyne...Ummm sit down! If you stand up on your bike ALL the time offroading your top heavy. I mean the bike is top heavy. You're more inclined to fall over. The only time you really need to stand is over a really rocky terrain or really rough terrain. Your bikes are designed to sit your butt down while offroading. Enjoying the videos. Take care.

@@BunnyKingHogs usual beginner mistake...... people look at Dakar riders and think they have to stand up to be able to ride over even the smallest patch of dirt..... it just burns up energy and when you really need to stand up you are too tired to do it proper and then you crash..... off-roading especially on big bikes is a battle against fatigue

Why the hell are you riding a 790 ? They are a great bike, but you should be on a 250 or 300 at the most with lower seat height. Great scenery though.
What should we be riding? The bikes were Uncle Pete’s which has had used to ride Zimbabwe. Awesome bikes
@@BunnyKingHogs For you, a CRF250 or 300l might be a better fit. It depends on your inseam length, can you sit on the bike and flat foot on both sides while getting some weight off your bum. A Yamaha XT250 has a lower seat height. You need to feel comfortable & able to hold the bike upright when the ground is a bit rough or sloping to one side. It needs to be light and the power not intimidating. As you become a better rider, you will be able to handle bigger, more powerful Enduro/adventure type rides.
The seat itself has to be comfortable if you plan to do all day rides, the handle bars also need to be adjusted a tad for your reach while sitting and standing, but not too far away from the centre line of the front forks. A small windscreen can also be advantageous when riding main roads and wet weather.
The 790 is a topline bike and I would love to have one, but unless you feel confident on it, it might be a bit much as it's a very powerful bike. It is the cream of the crop, as some say. Thanks for sharing your adventures in Africa, as it's a beautiful and I think friendly place for the most part, always remember to lead with a smile. Cheers.
