Vanessa, you are an excellent teacher. This is quite possibly the best off-road introductory video on UA-cam. I hope you'll do more instructional videos in the future.
Dude, spending a day with you would be an absolute treasure. Playing in the dirt would be out of this world. You've also reminded me how important regular practice of the basics are. Triumph's Wales Training Center is phenomenal! The coffee shop mount & dismount are too cool!
Aw hehe thanks! They sure are, the basic skills and foundations of riding can easily be looked over, but its good to go back to basics sometimes and refresh yourself. Thanks so much for watching
I've done the triumph off road experience twice now and the instructors are great, looking going back next year.i even bought a rally pro after the last visit
Another top video Vanessa. Being a bit older I learned to ride bikes in the early 80's back when the electrics were for the ignition and lights, that was it. I also took training back in the day to pass my test that included braking, front only, back only and both together. For faster cornering use the rear brake only as applying the front will make the bike stand up and miss the corner. Back then the rule of thumb was 75% front and 25% rear brake on a dry road changing to 50-50 in the wet. I had a short time off road with my old DT175 Yamaha and Kawasaki KMX200 (both were stolen) and I had a real hoot on the byways that were legal off road routes for bikes back then. All good stuff with great advice to anyone who rides a bike. Many thanks for sharing. Whoop! A shame I can't ride now but I can still appreciate the fun watching you youngsters having a blast as I did when I was younger.
Amazing! Have you ever thought about setting up a training business? You'd kill it! Kudos to John for being able to approach this with a beginner's mind, despite his skills and experience, and having an awesome attitude. I'm also an experienced street rider (though not fast or accomplished) who just got a dual-sport and started riding dirt a couple months ago. It's really been a lot of fun to be a novice again. I've taken two classes and, although they kicked my butt, I already want to go back. It's humbling and confidence-building at the same time. I wish I'd started this way.
Hehe who knows maybe one day! Totally agree with you, such a great attitude to have. That is ace im so glad you are enjoying it and just keep doing the basics and soon enough you will smash it 💪 woo!
I’m a very happy Tiger 900 RP owner myself. Newly rider with no off road experience. Would love to do do something like this. It’s always nice to see another woman show how it’s done. Thank you so much Vanessa!
Woooo! Nice! They are such awesome bikes, goodluck with the off road stuff, just take it easy and work your way into it, super glad you enjoyed the video and hopefully you can take something from it
1st of your videos. Been riding for too long, LOL. Love your teachings, presentation and the way you do it. And your personality is infectious. Keep on carrying on riding. 👍
I've ridden big bikes offroad for many years and done some great offroad courses. I still learned stuff from this video. You're a great teacher. Def make some more.
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you found the video helpful, especially with your off-road experience-that means a lot! There’s always something new to learn in the dirt, right?
Great video, one thing I like to do, is have a peace of velcro tape to lock the front break on, when picking up a bike. Note necessary but I find it dose help, at my age or all most 75 years.
I thought this was a great video. You’ve got a really nice way of teaching, not too technical but get the point across in a relaxed and fun way. You should definitely do more of these.
"Counter-steering" is said to make you a lot safer in emergency situations, but it also seems _counter-intuitive._ So, this is one thing I have to learn to get my head around...
You’re very comprehensive in instructive plainly to where people can understand it by saying and doing and I think that’s very important. Keep up the good work enjoy the video. It was very informative and taught me a few things. Thank you.
So funny, I ran across this video cause my friend who races motocross had me doing some of these exact drills this past weekend. Really like your videos and your accent gets in the ❤, lol! Keep up the excellent work!
Top job Vanessa, you sure can ride off road. I am nearly 80 and I can still lift my VStrom 650 up on my own using the various techniques you demonstrated. When I can’t lift it on my own I will have to buy a lighter bike. There is one more technique which works in the right situation. As you said depending on the circumstances Lay prone on the ground, grab the handle bar an get a firm grip on something towards the rear of the bike and then keeping your arms straight, push your chest into the seat , and then with your legs start walking forward as if you were trying to push the bike sideways. The bike will not slide sideways it will start standing up. This technique may be easier on your hip. I love to see competent female riders, they are every bit as good as men.
Aw thank you that is super lovely of you to say. Yup there are many techniques just finding the right one for you is key. Thanks so much for watching 🙂
That was awesome to watch and thanks Vanessa for all the tips, especially the way's to pick up your bike because I did hurt my back the last time I dropped my bike, doing it the only way according to some donuts on the web 😎
I cannot stress how important it is to start off road with somebody who knows things. Especially for novice rider. I have no clue how I'm still alive and didn't even get seriously injured. I found myself in stupid situations, lost count of crashes and few times I thought I lost bike too but, somehow we both made it. I would have called rescue few times but, I knew Mrs would put an end to my riding 😄 So, be smart and find yourself a hot teacher like Vanessa or, at least a teacher.
Nice tips for offroad beginers that will use it forever until they become mechanised and not have to think about it anymore, good job! One Tip, when lifting the bike with the squat dont try to pull it up, bend your knees press your back against the seat and push it back streching your legs. all the power comes from the legs pushing the bike against the weels on the ground, not from the arms. I have an old BMW 1150 GS Adv I know what it is ... Keep Riding Life is a ride
I feel better now. At 49 I started riding and after 6 months of riding streets to work and back I thought I getting decent at riding then I took a day of off-road training and it was so much harder than I expected. 😂. It’s not just me 🤪
thinking of getting a 1200 rally so this might be an idea to try thanks you for the insite defo looking into this like a bit off road just usure with such a big bike
I believe riding street riding helps riding off road and riding off road helps on the street. Having both is great knowledge and makes you better at both.
Great video Vanessa, with lots of top tips - thankyou! you MUST put me out of my misery tho.... what model of trouser were you wearing on the bike? If it's Revolution race, I cannot locate them! TIA and keep up the good work! Ride safe.
The ones in the beginning of the video were Revolution Race (the red ones) but the ones I am wearing during the riding aspect are from Mosko Moto. I am so sorry for the delayed resposne, but I hope it still helps and thanks for watching!
Good stuff Vanessa. I have been reliably informed and tried having the front wheel pointing up when you do the handle bar lift as it makes the lever between the handlebar and the front wheel longer and therefor easeir to pick up. You missed no 5 get 2 people aka someone else to pick it up for you, by far the easiest of the lot.
Nice to know that lifting with my back to it might cause my reassembled pelvis some problems 👍 although different for everyone, but glad I know to watch for it
Haha so true. I thought that when I looked at it. In person that final hill was a bit of a monster haha... Nop flat looking 🤷♀️ it was an ace day. Big thanks Andy. I'm going to miss you
Hi Vanessa, I had a bit of trouble my last time out on a steep decline, my speed just kept increasing, when I used my front brake it wanted to lock up, when I used my back brake it felt like it wasn’t doing much. I was in off road mode in my pan America, would off road pro made a difference? Or am I better having a nanny mode to help until my skill increase? Thanks for any advice
I nearly always pick up my bike with the handlebars. I push the top as much pull the bottom. You’re only the second person I’ve seen that feels the same way about the back squat method, and I don’t have any hip or knee problems.
Curious. Does standing on the pegs for a u-turn solve a particular practical problem? Maybe I missed it--I thought you stand on the pegs to see further and to use your legs to dampen rough terrain (so it doesn't transfer to your core) at higher speeds. Honest question. I ride a V-Strom 90/10 off-road. If I need to do a u-turn on a gravel road (which will always be inclined) I'm going to minimize the possibility of dropping the bike.
Great question! Standing on the pegs during a U-turn can actually give you a bit more control and stability, especially on loose or uneven surfaces. By standing, you lower your center of gravity and allow your legs to act as natural shock absorbers, helping to balance the bike and reducing the risk of it tipping over. It also gives you a better sense of the bike’s movement and weight shift, which can be super helpful on gravel or an incline. For a V-Strom, especially if you’re on 90/10 terrain, standing might feel different, but it’s a technique worth trying in those tricky U-turns on loose surfaces. Minimizing the chance of dropping the bike is always a good strategy-totally understand where you’re coming from! Thanks for the honest question
Very very long time proponent of taking beginners on tiny dirt bikes ( displacment wise). You get to learn to throttle correction, clutch control and handling without getting crushed or crashed.
The only way I could lift my GS Adv was back to the seat. Of course now I ride a Husq 701 thankfully ;-) I'm 61 with intact knees and hips knock on wood.
Apart from confirming you being a good teacher: how about doing those exercises on a scooter/motorbike with NO clutch e.g. Honda X-ADV 750, ADV350? challenge?? 😉
He has to lean the bike while keeping his body straight up I've done this since I was a kid to see how much I could lean my bike while turning in a circle but still use it on my electric bikes today while keeping the pressure down on my side walls so i don't slide out 😅
Bwahahah!!1! I expect the revenge for the butt-roughing hoax from the track day! 😏🤭 Nooo, Johnny got away clean. You are too kind! 😏🥴 What keeps surprising me is how much abuse the clutches will take when they are the multiple plates in oil-kind. You'd be replacing dry clutches by the dozen, using them like that. I guess that's one of the hardest things to learn, that these oil clutches can handle loads of work. Right, I'll nick a bike and practice right away! 🤗 P.S.: An ace video, you're the perfect instructor! 💪🤗

@@TheGirlOnABike it's good the UK has motorcycle adventure academies. Gotta do something for fun over there. The only amusement park you have in the UK is that weird and useless Ferris Wheel they erected in the middle of London for no apparent reason
I think it comes down to personal preference, ability and position/location of bike. But mega glad you know what works for you, woo! Thanks for watching 🙂
900! It is so biig and heavy! yea, They are great bikes, but offroad or anything extreme and you are essentially driving a tank! (sure a fun tank). Give me a bike under 300 pounds every time! :)
I agree but when the bike is gear shifter down that is no possible so good to be in the practice with both outcomes. Also a lot less likely to have drops in neutral I guess so that's a bonus
If you're a girl on a bike don't try to be a man on a bike, if it's too big for you then select a size that fits. I see too many females try to ride bikes that are made for much larger people to handle just so they can "compete with the boys", well it's not about that, it's about selecting the right size for you. If you can't pick the bike up off it's side then it's too big for you. Any bike you choose you should be able to pick up off it's side without really straining yourself.
That feels like a sexist comment dude. I'm stronger than many guys. I also think it is a very variable need. When I'm on a Harley-Davidson road bike I never need to be able to pick it up. It's totally dependant. And a Tiger 900 Rally Pro is definitely pick up able. I'd love for you to watch my 1000 Dunas Wales to Africa series as I take the Tiger into the dunes in a rally. Sometimes it's about pushing the limits just because we can, that's how we grow.

When I can’t lift it on my own I will have to buy a lighter bike.

Lay prone on the ground, grab the handle bar an get a firm grip on something towards the rear of the bike and then keeping your arms straight, push your chest into the seat , and then with your legs start walking forward as if you were trying to push the bike sideways. He has to lean the bike while keeping his body straight up I've done this since I was a kid to see how much I could lean my bike while turning in a circle but still use it on my electric bikes today while keeping the pressure down on my side walls so i don't slide out 😅
It is such good practice, nicely done!
Bwahahah!!1! I expect the revenge for the butt-roughing hoax from the track day! 😏🤭
Nooo, Johnny got away clean. You are too kind! 😏🥴
What keeps surprising me is how much abuse the clutches will take when they are the multiple plates in oil-kind. You'd be replacing dry clutches by the dozen, using them like that. I guess that's one of the hardest things to learn, that these oil clutches can handle loads of work.
Right, I'll nick a bike and practice right away! 🤗
P.S.: An ace video, you're the perfect instructor! 💪🤗
Haha yeah so true I'll have to get revenge on our next adventure together. It's better when he's not expecting it too hehe
Good point on the clutch too
@@TheGirlOnABike Revenge is a dish that is best served cold. And revenge is sweet! 🤗
Might we say revenge is ice cream? 🤔
Please teach me some technics

Haha true!
I believe your buddy hurt his back or hip, he wasn't very straight backed. I have my own titanium, so I know some of the signs!
Wow good yeah. Yeah he recently had a hip replacement
I think you just to need to mention the weighting on your foot pegs for turning....
Good tip to add, thanks, and thank you for watching, i hope you enjoyed it
You can also learn stuff you didn't know from the interweb. I didn't know that there is such a thing as a 'global adventure training academy'
Haha sure can!
@@TheGirlOnABike it's good the UK has motorcycle adventure academies. Gotta do something for fun over there. The only amusement park you have in the UK is that weird and useless Ferris Wheel they erected in the middle of London for no apparent reason
With a host as stunning as this girl, my riding skills would not be found wanting at all! 🤣
😅 thanks for the compliment, I think hehe
I believe to pick up the bike it’s safer and easier to do it backwards. Protect your knees and your back 😊
I think it comes down to personal preference, ability and position/location of bike. But mega glad you know what works for you, woo! Thanks for watching 🙂
The best way to pick up a bike is to pretend your leg is sore, then your mates pick up your bike, then magically your leg feels better. Success!
😅 life hack! Love it
900! It is so biig and heavy! yea, They are great bikes, but offroad or anything extreme and you are essentially driving a tank! (sure a fun tank). Give me a bike under 300 pounds every time! :)
😅
Vanessa is back into one of her comfort zones ...MUD
Get John back for some fun in the SAND
Heheh
Before you pick the bike up, make sure it's still in gear, else it moves when you pick it up as I found out😂
I agree but when the bike is gear shifter down that is no possible so good to be in the practice with both outcomes. Also a lot less likely to have drops in neutral I guess so that's a bonus
If it was my first time off road and someone told me to ride a 900cc bike, I would tell them to get bent.
😅

Male biker here....Well said. I totally agree with you...Totally unjustified considering your achievements, stamina & persona.....

I'm gonna my first cheat in over a year and a half. It's gonna be a single red velvet cupcake. Can't wait. Probably gonna get so sick.

@@TheGirlOnABike I think I sent you the wrong msg. Sorry about that.
