Wow. As an eye care professional, graduating optometry school in a few short months, I am glad to hear that you have actually done your research. Yes, most of the discomfort that comes from staring at screens stems solely from how dry your eyes get. There is virtually zero affect on long term health risks to your eyes outside of dryness. Albiet, dry eye is one of the more prevalent eye conditions that plagues people with about 80% of the population falling to a diagnosis of Dry Eye, but only feeling the effects of dry eye when the symptoms and the condition are progressed to a severe state. The breaks that you talked about are what we like to call the 20-20-20 Rule. For every 20 minutes of screen time, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Practicing good visual hygiene as the academics call it is what can bring you that edge when it comes to your vision and not having it be a hinderance to performance. Other issues such as focusing and double vision should be reserved for visits to your eye care professional, such as an optometrist.
And as I was finishing the video, your comment about feeling "nearsighted now" is called accommodative spasm which can happen when you are doing near vision work for an extended and prolonged period of time. You can maybe circumvent this by wearing cheap over-the-counter reading glasses, but it will be trial and error, hit or miss.
Everything you said was super awesome and helpful and thank you SO MUCH for this info! I need to figure out how i can include this in a video some how as an update. I was really unsure with everything I was reading on IF long term health risks existed so I was ambiguous about it and am glad you could verify that!! Thank you again for viewing and the info!!
Wow so i will not going blind or myopic even i do that? Thanks for saying that, so even online class, online assignment and online homework making me stare to the screen all the time and i worried my vision will be blury rest of my life...
Wow. I tried sitting close to my monitor about 6inches away and I can already notice a lot of changes in my game. From silver 3 to massive headache. Edit: after days of getting used to this kind of setup, I am now comfortable with the headache.
"The health risks of sitting 6 inches from ur monitor" well there is the part where ur EYES FUCKING DIE. But the good part is you get that radiant in no time, oh and when Anyone flashes you... oh amigo you see jesus
@@urnotjustin you can't handle the jammbo, justin. in fact, i've already beaten you in valorant plenty of times. but you don't know that yet, because the games haven't happened. i AM valorant. all the servers, headshots, matches, and tournaments run off my brain power. that's right, all of it is OFF THE DOME. to you, i am a god. to me, you are already defeated.
honestly bringing my monitor closer to my face actually improved my focus significantly but only a certain distance i could move my monitor closer, when i tried to bring even closer then before i did notice i was feeling not good, i had to look away from my monitor before the match started in valorant and my monitor brings off alot of heat and it really made me uncomfortable. so for me setting my monitor in a specific distance helps me pop off more
Before I started playing Valorant I also used to play with my monitor far from my eyes. But transitioned with my monitor around 5 inches close to my face, but with it I got into a habit of regularly resting my eyes, as I continued to get eye strain (even before I switched to this setup). A closer monitor just gave me a better sight on the pixels and more room for my arm and mousepad. (My posture for fps games is to have my whole arm resting in the table, and my table isn't that spacious, so I basically had my arm around the base of my monitor)
i change my glasses (not the frame) every year because myopia on my eyes increases. i played a lot of video games for about 7-10days like 10 hours a day and now myopia increased so much for only 7-10 days.
I saw this video and decided to try it out. I only had my monitor close to me while gaming. And oh boy did it help. I am not joking, I was able to consistently hit sprays, microshots etc. Within 3 days of playing with my monitor close to me. Advice everyone to remind yourself to blink once you die or are in the buy phase
I always have to be like a foot or 2 away from whatever screen I'm playing on, otherwise I just feel sick bro. Unfortunately my gaming chair forces me to press my nose against my monitor so that I can smell the stale dorito dust and liquids splashed on it. I love my gaming chair so much bro.
reminder: if you get headaches very quickly/easily try adjusting the night light on windows settings in display and it should help. I used to have throbbing headaches from playing just 2-3 hours and it helped a lot.
great video man 👍🏻 I actually had to see an eye doctor a month ago because i constantly had dry eyes and was just always tired all the time. He recommended to simply just sit 2 feet away and also some blue light blocking glasses and for someone who games about 6 hours a day i feel that i can actually go longer without having that dry burning feeling it gave me.
Ik no one asked, but i personally play close to my monitor with 800x600 black bars on csgo as personally I find it comfortable but also helps me concentrate, having ADHD, i struggle a fair bit with concentration, so this just really helps me play comfortably and go concentrate better
Speaking of ergonomics, it's nice to actually have the space to adjust your stuff. Many gamers dont have a choice and just work with that they got and that works too.
Very good point! Makes me wish i talked about that too. When i first started mg set up was with a walmart folding table and folding chair, i was about 3.5 feet from screen and a ton of leg room but no room to recline or push my chair back. I honestly think back fondly of those days a lot bc ergonomically im pretty set, but im 6’2” and miss the leg room. 😔
An easy fix would be to witch from 24" FullHD display to 27" FullHD display. Yes, the image quality is "worse" because of lower PPI but you can sit further away to get the same result of sitting closer to the 24" FullHD display (to see pixels bigger/better)
I sit like this 3:45 and have my monitor on the edge of my desk (towards me, but only in competetive shooters) and i have no problems at all, no eyestrain no headache, nothing. Also only my hand (to the wrist) is on the desk but my keyboard is behind my monitor, so my right arm is basically not on the desk while my left arm is fully extendend on the desk.
I have a hard time getting my eyes to focus after moving them quickly. They do focus, but very slowly. So for competitive games, I keep my monitor further away, so I have the majority of it in my vision at all times so I don't have to move my eyes as much. For single player games however, I do bring it closer so I can get more detail and help fill my field of vision so I can immerse myself better. For competitive games, I also have to have the surface my keyboard and mouse is on as level with my chairs armrest as possible.
Yeah idk if you are on a 24 inch monitor but definitely consider that. Also watch ron rambo kims video on how's pros sit. Really informative consider buying a larger desk and a zowie monitor. The larger desk will allow you to rest the while arm including the elbow on the desk and the zowie has dyac which is really pleasant on the eyes.
i actually haven’t ever considered my gaming posture to be honest but when i used to play skyrim on pc i think i actually tended to sit a little bit too close to the screen (but that isn’t even an fps so it doesn’t rly correlate i suppose) bc my head and eyes would hurt afterwards sometimes. also i love my e-win gaming chair that i got with ur code justin 💖
Honestly I thought this was self explained. Specially to those who have been gaming since they were young and would slowly get closer to the TV till their parents told them to sit back. I personally found out that sitting this close could also help your slouching habits as you're not wanting to lean more forward. Could be just me, but I figured I'd throw this in.
Ive been wearing glasses for 12 years and at some point tried out contact lenses, i'd like to say that if you wear contact lenses, your eyes will strain less and they will be more hydrated when playing, because the contact itself has to be hydrated, as for the glasses i have everything possible to protect the eye in the glass itself but it still gives me high headaches because i also play rhythm games,FPS games,MOBAs and MMOs. The one that obviously gives the most strain are the Rhythm and FPS games because you are required to put in all of your focus into them and blink less, i used to game in the dark but i started turning on a little light to balance out the light in the room and you should also open the window for more air obviously, i dont think that sitting close to your monitor will make you a better player, it literally all comes down to personal preference and what works for others the best.
For games like osu! I play more like 3:45 to be more comfortable but less exaggerated. For FPS, I sit slightly closer to the monitor. I also like to have everything else out of my prereferral vision or at least in an organized way. (Yes I used to have OCD but it's a lot more controllable now) I think this type of stuff also applies for mouse sensitivity. All preference.
1. Take a break atleast once a hour and focus on a long distance atleast 10m away from you. Do it for like a min or two every break. Helps your eyes to relax from close range focusing so you do not get "cramps" in your eyes. 2. Use moisturizing eyedrops 3. Have the right creen settings. Light, contrast, colours etc.. If your in a dark room, maybe you should block some blue light and use a warmer tone. Use rgb/a lamp behind your monitor. 4. Have a chat with an optician. a good idea is to have personalized glasses while playing
One thing I feel with your test is that your crosshair may have felt out of wack because it IS. I know it comes down to personal preference, but not having even a single pixel of reference of where the middle of your crosshair is may be less distracting and allow you to see pixels in really niche scenarios but I think being able to see EXACTLY where it is at all times is a huge benefit, it eliminates any human error of mistaking where center actually is.
my preffered way of playing is duct taping the monitor to my face, laying on my bed instead of sitting and using wii contollers to play. my rank is radiant 3 btw
I have myopia and its so bad that even if something is only a ruler away it becomes blurry. I once had to play without my glasses because they were being repaired and i had to sit close like this to my monitor compaired to how i usually sit far away (kinda like the guy you showed laying down on his chair) and during that i realised that i was able to make small adjustments better and notice things better which helped me alot because i use low res and also was using chamber at the time so which helped me hit 1 taps better and do 2x better than i used to. After that game i got my glasses and played another with it and how i usually sit and it ended up with my usual performance.
when i tried putting my monitor that close, i instantly noticed a difference. I was hitting my shots more and i started getting more headshots. After every match i take a break bc obivously it isnt good for your eyes. Made me a god tho lol
Long range fights is where you really notice , the only map I know where there are huge range duels is dust 2 in CSGO , because of the distance everything is so small you feel the need to get closer.
my monitor is relatively close since my desk is a small desk but i like it close since it helps me focus better and that its feels like your actually in the game which also helps me focus more.
Think that example at 2:00 is a really good example. If valorant didn't have red outlines and characters that person behind the box would have been much harder to spot.
As a Guardian main, it's important for me to sit close to my monitor so I can see every pixel. Because if the first shot doesn't headshot them I'm in a pretty bad spot.
My dad is a eye doctor and he always tells me that looking at my phone too close to my face can cause long term damage (nearsighted). I would imagine that the same would go for monitors.
So first off I have a crazy gaming chair, luxurious leather seating. Anyway, I used to have the exact same issue, feeling like pros use close monitor so I should but playing better with the monitor far. But every time I switched back eventually I wanted to go back to close more and although it feels more uncomfortable it became natural I could really be immersed and see things I could never before. So I got used to it, but now my hands are uncomfortable under my monitor but my gameplay has gotten so much better. Idk it screws with me now too like after screens I get nearsighted but if I move my monitor I can't help but look at the background of peripheral things from peripheral vision. Its like for me I got better after getting used to close monitor but overall affected comfort, but if I choose comfort I constantly hit this skill ceiling and lose the ability to frequently be hitting transient hypofrontality or (extreme focus where time dilates and slows) Edit: Like even now when using my 13' MacBook my screen feels far, when it is a good distance from my face. But after about an hour of use I get used to it and it feels like my monitor is close again. So odd Thats just my experience tho
i've tried this once and like noted said he doesnt see his killfeed i was more distracted by being paranoid that someone is on my screen on the side (kinda around where the killfeed is) and i simply miss this person because i cant even see the whole monitor anymore
Yeah, I don't miss any pixels near the center of my screen but I miss literally everything else. It's so hard to see the rest of the screen when you're that close to the monitor.
I've been actually playing like this since i even started playing fps games like csgo and its mostly because i have always watched streamers like s1mple and more pro csgo players and i really just wanted to try it out so when i first got my pc then i just started playing like this and now when i try to play normally i usually dont get as much kills coz i really focused when i am close to my monitor and helps me play and not miss a single pixel
So I am an Immortal player, so not pro or anything but I'm pretty good I'd say, and a tip I have for people who wanna try playing closer to your monitor is to use your monitor setting to artificially shrink your monitor so that you don't have to move your eyes as much, and personally that has helped me with the eye strain caused by moving my eyes so much and has helped with tunnel visioning.
Man oh man I cannot stress enough how good EWIN GAMING CHAIRS are. I got my chair for my birthday last year, and I have been sitting in it ever since. My ewin GAMING CHAIR changed my life, my dog died around Christmas, but fear not, my ewin GAMING CHAIR brought him back to life. Was diagnosed with testicular cancer, but sitting in my Ewin GAMING CHAIR long enough cured it. A girl saw my ewin GAMING CHAIR and actually considered sleeping with me! Gaming chairs are the best and they have changed my life! 9/10, they're ok I guess
One thing i find myself doing when i am browsing my phone is only using one eye, because my screed is very small and i have to put my phone close but if i watch with both eyes they cross too much and it is uncomfortable (not always the same eye, it switches regulary) but i believe the eyes try to even the light between them and one of them is closed and the other staring at a bright screen and it is not good. Not very related to the video but it is about screens and eyes :P
I struggle to play with my monitor to close. Yes I see the advantage in terms of not missing pixels and making micro adjustments but I also see the disadvantage of not being able to check your minimap at a casual glance. I feel like at a healthy distance I have a perfect balance between keeping 1 eye on my gameplay and 1 eye on my minimap at any given time. If my monitor is to close I feel like I have to take to much of my vision off of the action to check the minimap 🤷♂️ anyone else get this?
I don't understand how people can play so close to the screen and not have their eyes burn, when you sit so close to your screen your eyes move more and it just hurts over time, sitting a little farther away so that everything is in your pereferal vision makes your eyes move less and strains your eyes less aswell.
Very interesting video! Dip in performance can just be attributed to not being used to being so close to your screen. just getting used to your own settings and not flip flopping between different resolutions, graphics settings, crosshairs, sensitivities, etc. is by far the most important to build muscle memory and consistency. That's what i think anyways, i personally sit in a very ergonomic position, right angle legs, monitor an arm's length away and looking straight ahead my eyes meet the top of my monitor. Additional note, i highly advocate for lights on while gaming. I used to have dry eye and eye fatigue but it has gone away as i told myself to take breaks, etc. No need for blue light glasses, just have a nice desklamp, remember to blink, and use eye drops if necessary :)
Ngl there have been moments where I glance at my map for a single micro second next thing u know I don’t notice a skye standing in front of me in the middle of the open
The thing with the out-of-position crosshair, this is a serversided problem I suppose. I've been checking my own game footage for a long time now, and I've been getting headshots when I've not even aimed on the head (and the bullet tracer went somewhere else) and at the same time , there has been headshot splashes where it registered bodyshots or no hits at all. The game is still broken but as long as people keep tolerating that, Riot won't change a thing
Because the more you play without the special glasses the more blurry your eyes will be because of the blue light that the screen emits which causes your eyes to start getting confused and... blurry, and then go so close to their screens because they play too much all day
the best wayy to fix your eyes is to either have a cool monitor than has a blue filter or use glasses that remove blue light trust me they are very good they have a tiny zoom so its like having it close to u
I used to play on my bed, laptop on my lap, and mouse on the side of my lap and i used to play better like that then using a table but i started trying to get use to a table and improved easier
Because they’re on 24” monitors, this is due to that size being predominant in pro tournaments. That’s literally the only reason. If you play on a 27” monitor or larger, you can sit a little further back and get the same effect
This is true cus there’s a glitch in my Valorant that happens sometimes that my gun glitches in battle and I’m only able to aim: zooming aim and getting close to the screen. And 99.9% percent of my aim gets better thanks to the glitch
NGL I have seen the difference myself. My front-end headphone jack wasn't working so i had to sit very close to the monitor cause the headphone cable wasn't long enough. And I became more precise with my shots.
Gaming chairs are more of a gimmick and ergonomic ones will probably benefit you way more in terms of health, posture, and gaming performance. If you know, you know.
Think this only works in a positive way for games like CSGO and Valorant, with slow pace no sprints really but it would have a negative result with games like apex and CoD, that have fast pace
To play I literally sit all the way to the edge of the desk on the left side, I have my mouse almost on the left side and use the right hand to aim, doesn’t give me any pain but I apparently can’t aim in any other position
I am not a "pro" whatever that means but I can tell you playing at a high level its easier to hit the headshots when you can actually see the crosshair. If you want to nail headshots you need a really small precise crosshair , I myself do the smallest dot possible and I have a huge TV screen which is more comfortable than sitting with a monitor 2 inches from your face.
The pros response is actually more detailed, I now watched the video, its true the micro adjusting to the head is easier and doable because you can see the head and the crosshair as if you were sitting further away it would be extremely hard uncomfortable and a guessing game . Micro adjusting was the word I was looking for.
Great point! Still learning new things everyday about Valorant pros and meta, and that’s a super good point. In Val most pros use the color blind highlight to make it even more visible.

I'm actually also curious why your keyboard is tilted in the direction that most consider opposite
my preffered way of playing is duct taping the monitor to my face, laying on my bed instead of sitting and using wii contollers to play. my rank is radiant 3 btw
Alternative title: Why is urnotjustin's mousepad so small?
6:33 i'm more impressed how your mousepad is tiny small, mine is Extra Huge and i'm using it all
Blinking: *Happens automatically*
Thinks about it: *Ah shit you've done it again*
You just reminded me now I have to blink manually. Whyy?

Read pinned comment thats awesome to hear tho! But you can def play that way AND take care of your eyes!
Its actually not about noted close to the screen is probably his gaming chair
Long range fights is where you really notice , the only map I know where there are huge range duels is dust 2 in CSGO , because of the distance everything is so small you feel the need to get closer.
my monitor is relatively close since my desk is a small desk but i like it close since it helps me focus better and that its feels like your actually in the game which also helps me focus more.
Think that example at 2:00 is a really good example. If valorant didn't have red outlines and characters that person behind the box would have been much harder to spot.
Super video! I applauded for $2.00 👏
Thank you i really appreciate that a lot! I just want people to find the enjoyment that I do through Valorant :)
5:18 ive recenly hit Lvl 2 where now my bottom eyelid is twitching randomly. I'm going to take a break from electronics for a few days...
As a Guardian main, it's important for me to sit close to my monitor so I can see every pixel. Because if the first shot doesn't headshot them I'm in a pretty bad spot.
LOVE the guardian, its honestly really slept on
°Д°
yooo another fellow guardian main
2:20 i was able to see even i tho i am lying on my chair maybe because is a very common spot in gold/plat elo.
Very good video, informative, have the proper sources and has a conclusion. 10/10 justin
Thank you so much! I cant crank out bangers like this every time but i try to always be invested in everything i put up!
My dad is a eye doctor and he always tells me that looking at my phone too close to my face can cause long term damage (nearsighted). I would imagine that the same would go for monitors.
Sometimes i feel like i stop breathing a whole round without realizing it but i still dont know if i do it or not
The one pixel on A site split is a great example, there is one pixel perfect shot where you can shoot through. It's on the boxes
Its like for me I got better after getting used to close monitor but overall affected comfort, but if I choose comfort I constantly hit this skill ceiling and lose the ability to frequently be hitting transient hypofrontality or (extreme focus where time dilates and slows)
Edit: Like even now when using my 13' MacBook my screen feels far, when it is a good distance from my face. But after about an hour of use I get used to it and it feels like my monitor is close again. So odd
Thats just my experience tho
i deadass don’t get why you had to mention you have a “crazy luxurious gaming chair” though. insecure ?
i've tried this once and like noted said he doesnt see his killfeed i was more distracted by being paranoid that someone is on my screen on the side (kinda around where the killfeed is) and i simply miss this person because i cant even see the whole monitor anymore
Yeah, I don't miss any pixels near the center of my screen but I miss literally everything else. It's so hard to see the rest of the screen when you're that close to the monitor.
6:24 i thought my internet lag for a moment XD
Same
I've been actually playing like this since i even started playing fps games like csgo and its mostly because i have always watched streamers like s1mple and more pro csgo players and i really just wanted to try it out so when i first got my pc then i just started playing like this and now when i try to play normally i usually dont get as much kills coz i really focused when i am close to my monitor and helps me play and not miss a single pixel
I feel like you need to get used to it for any advantages to be noted. However, the research was very well done and presented in a very pog manner.
Thank you! :D
I like how you showed a clip fo someone getting flashed when you started talking about eye strain.
this all sounds weird at 11:25 cause i have the forest bg music running at the back
I'm near sighted sooooo... I'm bout to fuck up my eyes more
So I am an Immortal player, so not pro or anything but I'm pretty good I'd say, and a tip I have for people who wanna try playing closer to your monitor is to use your monitor setting to artificially shrink your monitor so that you don't have to move your eyes as much, and personally that has helped me with the eye strain caused by moving my eyes so much and has helped with tunnel visioning.
How to do that
Man oh man I cannot stress enough how good EWIN GAMING CHAIRS are.
LMAOOOO copy pasta material
2:30 was so ezzy so spot.i can bet on that me too see him with normal view distance.
06:57 min when that Tekken3 Soundtrack hits like my boomer backpain LUL
"Real photo of my doctor" *Shows DR DRE*
5:12 Started talking about the symptoms of what happens to your eyes, meanwhile I was scrubbing my eyes and feeling how they're so dry xd
Im an imo player and i can confirm that we sit so close to the screen because it gives us more game sense and so we can see the fast peeks
sitting closer has nothing to do with game sense lol
In order to see the screen , you have to be the screen .
Sun tzu , The art of war.
smh its to smell the enemies
Ngl there have been moments where I glance at my map for a single micro second next thing u know I don’t notice a skye standing in front of me in the middle of the open
its like having a sharigan u lose ur eye sight at one point lol
Trading eyes like pokemon cards
Not to miss a pixel...
4K screens: "Hold my pixel"
He's trying to get a screen tan
lolol
Honestly this video was exactly what I needed. Excellent stuff you earned a sub
I appreciate that! Thank you for watching this video is a favorite for sure from me
The thing with the out-of-position crosshair, this is a serversided problem I suppose.
Okay but how was that not a headshot on the sage at the beginning
I had a shot like this too the other day. All I could see was the head, aim for the head, gets a body shot
"that is a scalp shot obviously, the brain is still intact "- rito games
Because the more you play without the special glasses the more blurry your eyes will be because of the blue light that the screen emits which causes your eyes to start getting confused and... blurry, and then go so close to their screens because they play too much all day
It's weird how i just sat very close to the monitor for the first time in my life and this video comes up, man how does google even know that!
the best wayy to fix your eyes is to either have a cool monitor than has a blue filter or use glasses that remove blue light trust me they are very good they have a tiny zoom so its like having it close to u
Get a gaming chair that can lean all the way back and play like that, Laying down to play is a 10/10 pro strat. Highly recommend.
laying down on ur stomach
@@urnotjustin Its how you achieve peak performance
I used to play on my bed, laptop on my lap, and mouse on the side of my lap and i used to play better like that then using a table but i started trying to get use to a table and improved easier
The my boy on 3:04 got me xD
Because they’re on 24” monitors, this is due to that size being predominant in pro tournaments. That’s literally the only reason. If you play on a 27” monitor or larger, you can sit a little further back and get the same effect
Interesting! Never thought about monitor size in a tournament setting
Ive totally been there! Short wires suck
Yo, this is crazy this guy actually liked and replied love u mate. But Not in that way.
Back when i play on my laptop i cant play properly unless i go prone. Im not comfortable playing while sitting
I do this now because Idk why but I kept getting distracted by the light shifting in my room
Do what works for you :D
You know why I have eye strain from Val? Be cause of the damn flashbangs.
Not to mention we all throw the 20-20-20 out the window
why do I have such bad vision?
also me:
lmao
in the example you gave csgo doesn't have an enemy highlight colour so it would be harder to see them in csgo if they are hiding behind some boxes
Great point! Still learning new things everyday about Valorant pros and meta, and that’s a super good point. In Val most pros use the color blind highlight to make it even more visible.
