  • We're giving you a quick walk-through of how we approach the shift/throttle and ignition controls on this Tohatsu 40 hp outboard. These same rules apply to most outboards that use the same 3300 style shift/throttle cable (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda). Check out other videos on our channel for specific and in-depth control installs...and of course, please subscribe!

Do you have any videos on what wires go to what? Trying to figure out how to hook up gauges and finding it harder to find information for wiring these engines.

I believe there will be a gauge harness that plugs into the control box or into the ignition harness.

I have a 120 hp Nissan two-stroke outboard and it’s the same set up as that motor in this video. I am trying to adjust the throttle cable because my throttle is almost all the way down before the boat starts actually getting up to speed. Any advice on how to adjust the throttle cable

Any advice on how to adjust

You may have to adjust the cable fittings in the control box and at the motor to get the result you’re after. If your motor is a pull to open throttle you’ll want to have the motor side adjusted so that the throttle arm is pulled to the point where it’s almost advancing the throttle pulling any slack out that exists. Do the opposite if it’s push to open. Your goal at the motor side is to take out the slack in the throttle arm (the part the cable attaches to under the hood). The adjustment at the control box on the throttle cable would be to gain you more or less thread on the motor side to get that slack out of the throttle arm. Hope that makes sense!!

How many pins in that main plug? Will mercury control boxes work with this engine? Or other generic ines

As far as I know on this older style Tohatsu or Nissan you’d have to stick with a control box that’s setup for the control cables with adjustable ends (3300 style). I haven’t explored that option or alternative so I can’t be of much help on this one! I’ve seen a Honda run on Mercury controls though, so anything is possible!

So i have a tohatsu 115. The red steering cable runs from the motor to the steering wheel. Should i disconnect at the steering wheel, where it goes to the motor looks complicated to remove.

When restoring pontoons I usually unhook the cable at the console/steering wheel. It is usually a little quicker and simpler, but at the motor isn't bad at all as long as the cable can be removed angle wise without removing the motor off the transom.

@tomspontoons understood. But mine doesnt have the pin that u push into the hole. Just has the 1 cable going in. How do i release that cable. Unfortunately i cant attach a picture to show

@@donswain7859 it’s either got to be a bolt or two that loosen to release it or an aluminum nut on the rotary portion of the helm. Email me a picture at TomsPontoons@gmail.com
